Bucs Nation Mason Foster

Just joined the Buccaneer club because you guys got my boy from Seaside, California. You've got yourselves a non-stop motorized smackin', snappin', crackin', fillin' n killin', linebacker taught by yours truly when he was a skinny dude with nothin' but ears. Can't wait to watch ya'll in action! Mason's High School Film. Youtube the college highlights for those. So I watched the game Friday night and saw my boy lookin' pretty good out there. He looked quick in the box, showed good flow to the ball, and fluid in his pass drops. Has a real nose for the football seen in the fumble recovery. He's got good mojo as things always seem to fall his way. Did you see that explosion into the scrambling QB on 3rd and short??? Yeah, that's the nastiness I remember.

Niners Nation Who's making the decisions???

From what I've seen from the roster moves, Coach Singletary is the head coach and doesn't have an immediate impact on the moves made. Let's see 3 points;

1. Kyle Williams: Has been hurt all preseason and made the team despite being a 6th round draft pick and not performing in the preseason. He would have cleared waivers onto the practice squad.

2. Nate Davis cut: He's shown a hell of a lot of promise during the preseason. I understand you want competition but he's been that while he's been here. If not, outperforming his higher ups on the depth chart. Does Troy Smith really present an upgrade??? We'll see I guess.

3. Nate Byham: He stunk it up in game 1 of the preseason, then was handed the reigns of the working with the 1st unit for the 2nd game on. He choked while put in the position to choke and they've protected him thereafter. Don't give me that crap about him blocking well, I could block well if you ran away from me the whole time and all I had to do was get in the defenders way. He dropped two VERY catchable balls against the Vikings, one bounced off both of his thumbs in the red zone. Tony Curtis performed waaaay better than him in practice and in the games. Finley didn't any kind of a look this preseason.

4. The only move I agree with maybe is the release of Jason Hill. He's been with the team too long to not make an impact.

It looks like Baalke is ridding himself of Scot McClueless's regime. It's going to keep going too. Coach Sing sounded like he was taking what he's given and forging a team. Something is going on behind the scenes. No draftee was cut this year... Really???? When does that ever happen?

Niners Nation Tight End Battle so far...

From what I'm reading, Tony Curtis is winning the battle for the 3rd TE position so far. "-Nate Davis completed a mid-range pass to Brandon Jones on a bootleg pass and then hit free agent tight end Tony Curtis on a long throw down the middle." and "I thought tight ends Delanie Walker and Tony Curtis handled themselves well. Walker shoved Ahmad Brooks backward a few steps while Curtis, who is one of three tight ends vying to be the No. 3 tight end, looked good against Diyral Briggs." Byham is losing a lot of ground due to a sprained ankle. If he doesn't get on the field and produce something soon, his days are numbered. JJ Finley hasn't been mentioned by anyone yet. I did see his picture a couple of times on the site. A little early to be making assumptions, but it looks like Curtis is winning. and yes, that's my boy! SEASIDE SPARTANS!!!

Niners Nation Who makes the team as the "blocking" Tight End

Byham or Curtis or Finley? I feel that Tony Curtis provides us with the best balance of blocking and recieving down in the red zone. Training camp will tell as always. Curtis has shown that he can be a weapon in the redzone with sure hands and athletic ability. He's also come up with big plays on special teams in the clutch. From the Bear Pascoe experience I learned that draft picks aren't locks to make the team no matter how "bloody" they say they're going to make someone. Byham looks like a lineman and to me, provides Curtis with the most competition. Finley just beat out Pascoe for the PS and that's about it. Click on Curtis's name for my analysis on him. Here's the link if for some reason doesn't work. http://www.ninersnation.com/2010/2/5/1297450/introducing-tony-curtis-the-tight

Niners Nation Introducing Tony Curtis, the Tight End

I originally posted this last year. Here it is again for the NINERS!!!!

It is my pleasure to introduce to you 49er fans, Tony Curtis

I have been following his career since he came out. He is going to give the Niners a tough, physical, blocker who can double as a leaping jumping bean in the red zone. He was caught in a numbers game in Dallas which is unfortunate. He beat out their former 2nd round pick in Fasano and had the position, then Mr. Jones goes and drafts a physical beast (Bennett) in last year’s 2nd. Tony proved himself but took a backseat to the 2nd round pick. If you watched HBO’s training camp reality show, you saw the coaches enabling the heck outta Bennett. No matter what that kid did, the silver spoon was never taken away and he was given everything to him. The TE coach literally had to plea with him to come back to practice and tuck his jersey in. C'mon! Are you serious? Well, he is Jerry Jones’ guy and he’ll keep his job before the coach will. Shame… So, now Tony back home in the bay area, although we're from the waaaay south in the Monterey Bay. I'm excited to see Tony again on Sunday.

Strengths: Blocking in all aspects. That's what he's known for, that's what he's good at. Will get beat to the inside on occasion when the defender is slanting inside. Will drive smaller opponents down the field. Shows good pass protection when staying in to block. Flatbacked Michael Strahan in playoff loss two years ago, made the highlight reel when trying to display the nastiness of that game. In 2007, caught 3 passes for 3 TDs. 2 of them he was uncovered Video at 1:53 but the 3rd one against Philly he leaped 4 feet off the ground. Ok, maybe I’m stretching it a little, 3 feet sounds more like it. Look at 1:38 Video  On the goal line, you will be hard pressed to find a better drive blocker like Curtis at the TE position. He simply owns the defenders and will stay low, and squat those fat 300 pounders into the endzone. Video Look at 3:16 and see the technique. The biggest plus with Curtis is that he’s a playmaker. When put into make-or-break situations, Tony is going to MAKE the play. For example, the game versus the Buffalo Bills and the Cowboys had to recover the onside to have a hope to win: Video  It was Tony Curtis who came up with it to give them a chance. They say it was Nathan Jones but it’s Tony.

Weaknesses: He's going to have to learn the playbook and practice it a lot before he completely understands his role. We'll see what offense Coach brings. From what I'm seeing, he's going to have a lot more 2 TE sets with the two blocking TE just signed. When catching the ball, he’s not going to make anyone miss, but will try and bulldoze the tackler. Has to cradle the ball when running with it and protect it like his newborn baby. He’ll lose sight of that if he’s going to get the ball more. Gotta concentrate Tony, do your thing boy. So, as with most of us professionals, communication is key. He did miss his block last season on a punt that lost the game. But what you don’t know is that the left side of the line was blocking inside the whole game as an adjustment and blockers were replaced due to an injury. Well, when you replace and shuffle an entire side of a line, don’t you think it would be wise to ensure everyone is on the same page? video 4:47

Overall: He could explode and show everyone that a small school kid can beat the odds in the NFL and actually be given a chance, or he could get caught up in another numbers game. He's big, he's strong, he's got hops, good hands. I'm really excited! The redzone is going to be a gimme! Video They nicknamed him, "Some like it HOT!". Anyways, I’m a fan of his and I’ve broken down every film of him for the past 3 years so I may be biased, but he’s gotten a bad wrap by the media in Dallas. He’s been called a potentially good 2nd stringer, but you know what. He beat out Anthony Fasano for his spot and Fasano was traded to Miami. Fasano started in Miami and caught 3 tds last season.

I wish Tony all the best in his newfound situation in Kansas City and hopefully, he’ll be utilized the way he should be.
