We are about three more of these kind of losses from an angry Joe Vitt arriving at his post game press conference wearing nothing but a stained t-shirt and having a cigarette in one hand and a scotch in the other. He’ll be angry, belligerent and end the press conference with tears in his eyes sobbing, "Dam right we miss Sean! I miss him. Come home Sean we need you." Then Drew Brees will come to the podium and hug Vitt, look directly into the camera and say, "ARE YOU HAPPY NOW ROGER? YOU DID THIS. ARE. YOU. HAPPY. NOW?" If you saw an emotional Aaron Kromer in the post game after another knife to the belly loss, you know I’m only half kidding.

Forecast: Why is the Saints defense so awful?

Who or what is to blame for the Saints defensive disaster?

Could it be Steve Spagnuolo and his new plan? I mean we all grew tired of the Gregg Williams strategy of taking kerosene, matches, fireworks, a blitzing Roman Harper then hoping for the best, but maybe old Gregg had it right; the Saints defense is so devoid of talent or ability to run a complicated scheme let’s just set the house on fire to keep warm in the winter and hope for the best. Whatever happens it will burn real pretty.

Arson as a defensive philosophy has holes of course (see Smith, Alex) but as much as it pains me to say it I think I’d prefer the Gregg Williams defense to the 2012 Saints. At least Gregg Williams defense was interesting and whatever was going to happen usually did so very quickly.

There is only one question worth asking about the 2012 New Orleans Saints, How big and how bright is the fire, which is their season, going to burn?

The Saints coughed up a 24-6 third quarter lead in such a slow painful way if you argue they are anything other than a four win team you are just lying to yourself to block out the pain. That’s ok, I get it because I was using adult beverages almost the entire second half to survive Sunday. As Drew Brees said after the game, "Third and fourth quarters were pretty abysmal."

Yeah, pretty much Drew. I think you’ll be using that word abysmal a lot this year.

Players don’t respect them and the Rams/Redskins seemed THIS CLOSE to having a messy, full-on brawl. I can easily see a scenario where replacement refs lose control of a game completely, make a couple horrendous late calls, players and coaches go crazy along with fans and suddenly we have a sports riot any European soccer fan would be proud of. It would be horrible but I’ll admit if it happens and makes Tim Tebow cry, Roger Goodell look horrible, and nobody is seriously injured I’m all for it.

Also the Saints ARE IN BIG TROUBLE Sunday against the Chiefs.

After having a few days to digest the Saints awful opening week loss, I wonder if the biggest thing the Saints will lose without Sean Payton is their consistency.

Watching an inconsistent football team takes years off your life. If you don’t believe me, just close your eyes and travel back in time to the Jim Haslett era. The Saints could go to St. Louis and make a wild comeback on the Super Bowl Kurt Warner Rams and then go to Arizona and have 45-year-old Emmitt Smith run for 125 yards and two scores.

The Saints as some people in the South like to say, "A big hot mess." Penalties, turnovers, and confusion were the key ingredients in a 40-32 beat down.

The most concerning thing about Sunday's game and the thing which should worry you the most is the secondary. Right now it's a fatal flaw. I'm not talking a keep-you-out-of-the-Super Bowl flaw, I'm talking keep you from the playoffs and will make you mediocre flaw. The Saints were without Jabari Greer and lost Johnny Patrick and proceeded to get burned to the ground.

Four Words: Savory Simon Hubigs Pies.

The Saints have decided to go over the top and slightly ridiculous route with a giant Sean Payton billboard in the training facility so why not do the same to begin the year on the sideline?

It’s okay to admit the Sean Payton ‘Do your job’ billboard is both frightening in a Big-Brother-is-watching-you sort of way and hilarious in a did-the-Saints-really-make-a-giant-billboard/shrine-of-their-suspended-coach-that-would-make-dictators-in-foreign-countries-proud sort of way.

Now I know you’ve heard all the usual suspects of Pete Carmichael, Steve Spagnuolo, or Aaron Kromer. So boring. Let’s try and think outside the box people. Why can’t the Saints have a different guy every week or why does the coach even need to be a person? Why discriminate against inanimate objects or food?

You know how after the Saints won the Super Bowl following the 2009 season the offseason seemed to last 10 minutes? We partied, watched Tracy Porter's interception 5000 times, partied some more, and then the 2010 season started.

The 2011 offseason is going to be the exact opposite. Watching the Packers get trounced by the Giants was the cherry on top of the rancid sundae of a loss to the 49ers. Welcome to the longest off season we've had in Saintsville in a long time. And the most important since Sean Payton and Drew Brees cane to town in 2006.

It might not seem a big deal to any of you who are under 25 and read this column but to those of us old enough to remember the 1980’s the thought of the Saints going 8-0 in the Superdome gives us the same feeling as being told a unicorn won the third race at the Fairgrounds. Forecast: Brees has gone from great to ridiculous

Drew Brees has since the debacle in St. Louis put together maybe his best stretch of games. He’s thrown 19 touchdowns, one interception, and thrown for about 2000 yards. The frightening thing is he looks more athletic and mobile in the pocket than I’ve ever seen him. Brees seems to be avoiding sacks and throwing on the move BETTER.
