Thank a veteran today.

Stephen Gostkowski named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Gostkowski was a perfect four-of-four on field goals against Miami (30, 38, 34 and 40 yards), tying his career high with four successful kicks in a game. Gostkowski also had four field goals against Atlanta on Sept. 27 and had four successful boots in two games in 2008 (at N.Y. Jets on 9/14/08 and vs. Arizona on 12/21/08). In addition, Gostkowski kicked three of his six kickoffs into the end zone with two going for touchbacks to help limit Miami's dangerous kickoff returner Ted Ginn, Jr.

Gostkowski is second in the NFL with 73 points and is on track to finish the season with 146 points. Last season, he had an NFL-best 148 points.

The games always have playoff implications. Brady-Manning have faced each other three times in the playoffs (2003, 2004 and 2006). Each time, the team that won the regular-season battle hosted the playoff rematch. Each time, the team that hosted the playoff rematch won the playoff rematch. Each time, the team that won the playoff rematch went on to win the Super Bowl.

Both are among the best passers in history. Manning set a record when he passed for 49 TDs in 2004; Brady broke his record when he passed for 50 TDs in 2007. Manning set a record when he posted a 121.4 passer rating in 2004; Brady posted the second-highest mark in history, with a 117.2 passer rating in 2007. Today, Manning is No. 2 on the all-time passer rating list (95.3); Brady is No. 4 (93.4).

Both are among the great winners in history. Brady has won a ridiculous 107 of 136 career starts, a .787 winning percentage. Only Otto Graham, playing in the early 1950s, won more often. Manning has won 132 of 199 career starts, and his .663 percentage is among the best of all time. This year, his Colts will win at least 12 games for the seventh straight season — a string of success unmatched in history.

It’s rare for two quarterbacks for two quarterbacks to win so often — it’s even more rare for the same two quarterbacks to face each other almost every single season.

Both are MVPs. Brady-Manning have combined to win league MVP honors in the 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008 seasons, not to mention Super Bowl MVP honors after the 2001, 2003 and 2006 seasons.

It’s unprecedented for guys with seven different MVP trophies on the mantle to meet so often.

Randy Moss Gives Back

Moss and his associates with Randy Moss Enterprises have refurbished the DuPont Middle School fieldhouse to a state-of-the-art facility, complete with new lockers for both home and visiting locker rooms, new weight equipment, a new players lounge with a big screen television, and spruced up the weight room, coaches office, restrooms and laundry room. It was unveiled last week in a private ceremony with students at the school with little fanfare.

Helping out the children who are following his footsteps at DuPont holds a special meaning in his heart, Moss said.

"It’s my community and my neighborhood. When those guys strap on that helmet on Thursday night, it’s the same helmet I used to strap on. This is permanent. It’s something that will be there always. It’s not like giving an autograph or a jersey that will fade or go away. It’s permanent. It will also pass down through the midget league system for the kids that are coming in the future. I’m really excited about it."

What If Sports ranks them 4th (+2)

National Football Post ranks them 4th (nc): Randy Moss proved yet again that he can eat up man coverage—and the Dolphins lost because of it.

The Sporting News ranks them 4th (+1): You can believe Bill Belichick and Tom Brady will have new wrinkles for the Colts.

ProFootball Weekly ranks them 4th (+2): Last four vs. Indy have been decided by 18 total points.

CBS Sports ranks them 4th (+1): They have a firm grip on the division heading to the second half, but to have a chance at the top seed in the conference they need to win at Indy. The way their offense is getting cranked up, it's definitely possible.

Cold Hard Football Facts ranks them 4th (+1): Last week: 27-17 win vs. Miami. Randy Moss passed his old teammate Cris Carter for seventh place on the all-time receiving yards list (13,913). He's only 1,275 yards behind No. 2 Isaac Bruce, but still needs 8,982 yards -- approximately the career total for HOFer Fred Biletnikoff -- to catch Jerry Rice.

Don Banks at SI ranks them 4th (+1): Tom Brady against a Colts secondary missing safety Bob Sanders and starting two rookie cornerbacks sounds like an epic mismatch in the making, but let's not pencil it in for a 17-point Patriots blowout win just yet. After all, Houston's Matt Schaub can wing it a bit too, and he still only threw for 311 yards and led the Texans to 17 points in last week's loss at Indy. But don't be surprised if this is one of those games where New England lets Brady throw it 50 times, spreading the field with receivers and challenging the Colts defense to respond. Then again, with no running game to speak of, Indy's likely to do the very same thing.

WEEI ranks them 5th (+1): Now is the time for the Patriots to prove what they are capable of. The play of Laurence Maroney over the past few games has really helped balance this offense.

Vic Carucci at NFL.com ranks them 5th (nc): As all-time great QB matchups go, Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning sits at the very top.

USA Today ranks them 5th (nc): Colts are approaching their record 21-game winning streak.

ESPN ranks them 6th (-1): With Tom Brady, the Pats are atop the AFC East again. Life is normal.

Peter King at SI ranks them 6th (nc): Randy Moss, that was one of the best straight-arms in the history of straight-arming. And for you who need to know the rule about helmet-touching, the only player who can't have his helmet touched is the quarterback. So as long as the straight-armer doesn't grab or twist the facemask, it's legal.

Yahoo! Sports ranks them 7th (-2): After abusing one set of rookie cornerbacks last Sunday, how excited is Randy Moss to get a crack at another untested tandem in Indy?

Fox Sports ranks them 7th (-2): FIRST-HALF BLESSING: Kudos to the doctors who obviously did a fine job fixing and rehabbing Tom Brady's knee. But Bill Belichick deserves praise for adjusting to a more balanced offense after dialing up 100 pass plays in the first two weeks of the season while Brady was still getting his groove back.
FIRST-HALF CURSE: Curses only to the schedule-maker. If the Patriots played the Jets now instead of in Week 2, who would win? We'll find out in Week 11 for the rematch .

Watching a Patriots game this season has become similar to the morning commute to work. You have a good idea how it’s going to play out before it starts, and you’re really just hoping to avoid any accidents on the way there.

The Patriots completed the predictable portion of their schedule yesterday. After struggling with Miami’s Wildcat offense for about 40 minutes (when the Pats only led 17-16), the Patriots countered with a 71-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Randy Moss. A two-point conversion from Brady to Moss made it 24-17. The Patriots defense then switched to a 4-4-3, crowding the line of scrimmage to slow down the Wildcat. The final score — Patriots 27, Dolphins 17 — was just an afterthought on an afternoon when New England fans never really had a feeling their team would lose.

What happens when Matt Light returns?

"We’ll deal with the situation when he comes back," coach Bill Belichick told the Herald. "I don’t know when that’s going to be. Both guys have shown they can play that position very competitively, and we’ll deal with it when it’s an option. The last couple weeks, it hasn’t been an option."

Christopher Price offers some players thoughts on preparing for Peyton.

Outside linebacker Adalius Thomas says that one of the best ways to prepare to face Manning is to engage in a little self-scouting.

"I think that he knows so much and he’s such a student of the game and he studies so much that any little thing or clue that you give him, he’ll pick up on," Thomas said. "So you have to be very mindful of what you’re doing and showing beforehand. You have to study yourself like Peyton would study you a little bit in order to understand what it is he sees and what you might be giving away."

"You can show him 13 players on the field," Thomas said with a laugh, "but other than that, I don’t think you can give him anything new."

Bill Belichick reacts to the game and talks about momentum.

That was a typical AFC East game, tough game that came right down to the wire. I'm real proud of our football players. I thought they had a good week of preparation. I thought they went out there and played hard today. Miami made some plays, we made a few more and it's good to win that one. It's a big division win. Miami is 3-0 in the division coming into this game, so that was a huge win for us. We know we have a big battle coming up next week, but right now we'll just enjoy this one for a little bit and get back to work on Indy. I thought our guys played hard today. I thought they made some big plays and made them at the right time and ultimately that was the difference.

That third quarter kind of had elements of the Indianapolis-Miami game, where Miami held the ball for a long time and the Colts came back and hit them on a couple big plays. It was sort of the same thing, where we hit Randy [Moss] on a crossing route, he broke a tackle there on [Vontae] Davis and went 60, 70 yards - whatever it was. Those plays can turn around in a hurry. Long drives can be equalized by big plays, and big plays can be equalized by long drives. We just had a couple more of them than they did, but it was a big answer by our offense. It was a third-and-five; had that pass not been complete, [we would have] give them the ball back and they got a lead and so forth. That was a big one to hit and then we hit the two-point conversion that put us up by seven, so that was huge.

Ron Borges notes the lack of panic by the Patriots D as they solved the new Wildcat wrinkle.

"Last year we panicked," safety Brandon Meriweather admitted after a 27-17 win. "We didn’t stay focused and we were all over the place. This year we were more like a veteran team. We stayed calm, listened to the coaches and let the coaches coach and the players play."

Unlike a year ago, [Bill Belichick] had wise counsel for them and they had ears to hear and confidence that this was a solvable problem. And so it became.

"We worked on the option but it happened probably a little faster than we practiced it, but once we got it adjusted I thought they did a good job," Belichick said. "It seemed like after we saw it, we were a lot more confident and did the right thing and had everybody accounted for - the inside runs, the option, the pitch and all that. . . . I think we . . . defended it a lot better."

They defended it so well that it disappeared with the game on the line, Miami declining to go to it one time in its final two drives. The gimmick was gone, the victim of a defense that didn’t panic.
