If You Want to Actually Understand Hockey, You MUST READ This Author
I held my tongue for a few weeks to see how he played out, but Justin Bourne on PuckDaddy is fucking amazing.
The Montreal Eulogy on PuckDaddy is Why the Internet Was Invented
Wysh should just close down the site, Costanza-style:
Alright! That's it for me. Goodnight everybody.
Me and Claude [Giroux] will be playing together, alternating between center and wing. Ville Leino will be our other winger.
Marco Sturm Done for the Year
He led the Bruins in goals this season.
Eastern Conference Playoff Scenarios (Only One Spot Remains)
The top six positions are all locked up:
1 Washington
2 New Jersey
3 Buffalo
4 Pittsburgh
5 Ottawa
6 Boston
The Canadiens have also clinched a playoff spot.
If the Flyers win Sunday
7 Philadelphia
8 Montreal
If the Rangers win Sunday
7 Montreal
8 New York
With Michael Leighton likely out of action for at least a few weeks with a high ankle sprain...
Leighton Will Start in Net Against Chicago
Boucher will start loosening up in the bullpen during the first intermission as he adjusts to his conversion from starter to long-reliever.
Leighton Will Start Against Boston Tonight
Because why not go with the goalie who's played like crap for four games?
How the Flyers Just Saved $800k from Next Year's Cap
I have no faith that they were even aware they were doing this, since Holmgren didn't mention it today. But it happened.
Riley Cote Will Remain on the Roster
This is exactly why he was never assigned to the AHL like Syvret was.
With all the cap space the Flyers have, expect an AHL callup soon. The Flyers have 1 empty roster spot and plenty of cap room.
Geoff, how do I go about claiming Taylor Swift as my prize?
Penguins Officially Get Screwed to Acquire Ponikarovsky
Luca Caputi (47pts in 54 AHL games this season, 21 years old) AND Martin Skoula who Toronto will then flip tomorrow to another team.
Caputi is their #1 prospect at this point in time.
For 2 months of Panikarovsky.
Thomas Vokoun is Open to Waiving His NTC
"A: ...if there's a deal in place, [Florida's GM will] let me know. Ultimately it's my decision, yes or no.
Q: Have you told the Panthers you wouldn't waive your No-Trade Clause?
A: No, that's not true.
Q: So you are open to talk about it all?
A: Yep."
Nashville Acquires Young Offensive Dman (Grebeshkov)
Not sure if that makes them more likely to trade Hamhuis. Not sure if that makes them less likely to want Parent.
Interestingly, it's a younger, RFA Dman with a $1m larger cap hit for a 2nd round selection. Florida has to be a little more pleased with their work this morning.
Looking at the Flyers Draft Results (First Three Rounds) 2000-2007
Writer's Note: MikeFive and I discussed something about this a few weeks ago, and I said I was going to look into it and write about it in a few days. Then I never finished it, but Geoff's post about 2004 reminded me of it. I had left off at the 2007 draft, and frankly it's too soon to say anything about 2008, 2009, so I'm just publishing it as I left it.
This is totally and completely appropos of nothing whatsoever. It merely came up in conversation a few weeks ago and I started to look it up and realized I should just do it the right way.
Conference Call Today re: Emery
Seravalli via Twitter:
"Conference call with Paul Holmgren later this afternoon to give us an update on Ray Emery. He was supposed to skate today and didn't."
Ray Emery Undergoes MRI, May Need Surgery
"General manager Paul Holmgren said the results from the MRI were not immediately available yesterday.
...
Holmgren wouldn't rule out the possibility of surgery for Emery - but didn't say it was imminent, either.
...
"Is it something where down the road we need to address this surgically? We need to get a feel of where he's at right now," Holmgren said. "We all seem to think he's going to be fine for the short term, anyway. We'll have a better idea about the long term after we get the results."
Said Holmgren: "[He is] going to push it hard [Tuesday] with the idea that he'll be ready to play Wednesday [at New Jersey]."
Emery Scratched Again: Enter Phase Two of the Holmgren Secret Media Relations Handbook
Homer says Emery will be scratched tonight due to "tightness in his left hip".
Let me just link back to what I wrote mid-week [stupid no-block-quoting in fanshots...]:
Cue Paul Holmgren:
"He’ll miss a few days, it’s a minor problem"
Next Tuesday "He’s fine, he’ll be skating soon."
At the Olympic Break "Ray Emery will undergo surgery this week and will be able to resume hockey activity in 2-4 weeks."
By the way, Emery has been off the ice Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and isn't healthy enough to play tonight. But I'm sure its nothing to express concern about.
Boynton clears re-entry waivers
Oh, also, OKT, the Flyers 3rd pair dman? Detroit waited all of 45 minutes to put him on waivers and get him off the team.
Nick Boynton on RE-ENTRY Waivers
I don't know what anaheim is doing but Holmgren better claim him if he gets that far. They'll only have to split his $1.5 salary, making him cheaper than Parent and the same cost as Krajicek.
They can waive OKT and only increase payroll by $150k.
We Can End the Matt Carle: Olympian Nonsense Now
Tim Gleason and Ryan Whitney were chosen to be the two defensive replacements for Team USA.
Edit: Kovalchuk to be Traded TONIGHT
To repeat:
RIGHT NOW is the real trade deadline.
Nick Boynton placed on waivers
He's got a $1.5m cap hit.
Demote Syvret, waive OKT, that clears $1.1m in cap space, and claim Boynton.
He's an above average defensive defenseman, mediocre offensive ability. He skates well, plays physical (perhaps too physical) and has a heavy shot from the point.
Statistically, he was sixth best on Anaheim in GAOI/60. His qualcomp was .003 and qualteam is (-.007).
Flyers Seek Penguins' Magical Rejuvenation Spell
Somehow, playing back to back games against a rested opponent, the Penguins (on the road, no less) managed to overcome a 2-1 deficit with 10 minutes to play and put three shots behind Henrik Lundquist.
Reached for comment, Mike Richards was rendered speachless by the seeming impossibility of such a performance.
OKT Missing
Given the shitty TV coverage, this was never addressed during the game.
I can't find it addressed in the media, either.
But OKT play a total of 5:33, and didn't take a shift in the last 28 minutes of the game.
Is he injured again, or has Laviolette given him the Syvret treatment? UPDATE -- appears he was benched.
(Follow-Up) Final Winter Classic Neilson's: Down 19%
This was the lowest rated game of the three that have been held. The Final Neilson rating was a 2.1 share, down from 2.9 in 2009.
Winter Classic TV Ratings Drop
"NBC earned a 2.6 overnight Nielsen rating for the Flyers-Bruins Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Friday, down 10.3% from a 2.9 for the Red Wings-Blackhawks matchup last year, and even with the inaugural Penguins-Sabres Winter Classic in '08."
Hockey fans, are you rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrready?
For the thousands in attendance and the millions watching around the world, from the birthplace of America in Philadelphia, PA...
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLET'S GET READY TO RUUUUUUUUMMMMMMBBBBBLLLLEEEE!
Enter: Steve MacIntyre from the bush leagues.
MacIntyre, a 6-foot-5 250 pound goon, was called up from Rochester yesterday. His rap sheet is long:
* He has accumulated more than 200 penalty minutes in a season seven times in his brief career, coming close in two others.
* He has played in leagues like the: "Continental Elite Hockey League," the "Quebec Semi-Pro League," the "United Hockey League" and the "WHA 2."
[...]
Florida also called up scrappy Mike Duco, who has fought 15 times in his professional career according to HockeyFights.com.
