Darrell Ceciliani, OF, Mets (Rookie-Level Kingsport) Thursday’s stats: 4-for-5, 2 R, RBI, K, CS A fourth-round pick this year out of a small community college in Washington, Ceciliani is a excellent athlete with plus speed, gap power who needs less time adjusting to pro ball as his college team played with wood bats. He just turned 19 last month, is 14-for-30 in his last seven games and .301/.393/.452 overall in 20 pro games, and scouts are taking notice. Kevin Goldstein takes notice of Darrell Cecillini in his Minor League Update at BP

"They suck. It’s like being in love with an alcoholic. It’s like, you constantly defend her, and people are like, ‘Dude, your alcoholic friend is a mess,’ and you’re like, ‘Nah, you don’t know her like I do.’"

Minor League Injury Updates

9

Jenrry Mejia is working his way back from a strained finger on his right hand, and though there's still no timetable, he apparently threw without pain yesterday. This is obviously a good sign, and given the way he was racking up innings through the first half, there's no reason at all to rush him back. Elsewhere, Josh Thole and Reese Havens have both returned to action in the last week as well, from finger and hand injuries, respectively. Havens went deep tonight for St. Lucie, and is 3 for 7 with a pair apiece of walks and strikeouts in two games since being reactivated. Thole, who has been back in action for five games, is 5 for 16 with two doubles, two walks, and two strikeouts. Also, Giants super-prospect LHP Madison Bumgarner hit a Grand Slam of B-Mets lefty Eric Niesen, though Ruben Tejada partially returned the favor by later taking MadBum deep. Lefties Josh Thole and Ike Davis both also had hits off the dominating lefty, though this is much bigger news for the latter, as Thole has always hit lefties and Davis, well, hasn't.

Familia Dominates, Flores Goes Inside-The-Park

8

Familia struck out 11 while allowing just three hits and three walks over seven shutout innings, continuing his fantastic breakout season. Meanwhile Wilmer Flores, who has posted an OPS around .750 since the beginning of June, rounded the bases on a ball that went over the head of the opposing Center Fielder and landed in play.

Brad Holt Goes Into The Break Strong

8

He threw seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts, four hits, and just one walk. After a terrible bounceback start coming off the ankle injury, and despite failing to go deep into games the following two starts, Holt has now struck out 22 batters in his last 12.1 innings and walked just three. Overall, he has a 25/8 K/BB thus far in 19 Double-A innings. Don't let the shoddy ERA fool you, as it seems he's doing a lot more right than he is doing wrong.

The change-up, like I said in spring training, is just a matter of repetition, and the change-up has gotten to be almost a plus-pitch now, and I have been using it a lot.

Brad Holt tells Matt Cerrone he likes his changeup In other news, Josh Thole will make an appearance on Mets Weekly. I think we all know where Eric will be Saturday at 12:30.

Bill Madden vs. Tony B: Round 2

I'm not sure what Tony ever did to Bill, but I imagine its something similar to whatever it was that Brian Stokes did to Jerry Manuel.

Gee Undergoes Labrum Surgery

18

Terrible news for a guy who seemed to be working his way through some early issues in Triple-A. He wasn't an uber prospect, but he also probably could have been a viable major league arm. Obviously, a torn labrum totally changes that picture.

Zach Lutz Heating Up?

7

After hitting his fifth homer of the year last night for St. Lucie, Lutz extended his hitting streak to 11 games today by going 2 for 3 with two walks, a stretch in which he's also walked six times and struck out just four times. He's hitting .270 / .382 / .418 on the season. He just turned 23, and injuries stalled his early professional career, but there may yet be some untapped prospect potential here, especially if he can ever find his power stroke.

Thole, Mejia Updates from Oliveras

1

Though both players had recently been shut down, the news is good on both fronts. Thole is only expected to miss a couple weeks after dislocating his thumb on his catching hand, and Mejia is simply being slowed down for the sake of innings management (he's already just about matched his total from last year). I'm still waiting to find something official on Reese Havens, who was removed from last nights game after injuring his hand/wrist on a HBP. Keep your eyes peeled on that front.

Project Prospect Updated Top 50

12

Can anyone remember the last time the Mets had three guys show up on a Top 50 prospects list? This one is a bit of a unique take, the method is identifying guys with high floors, so that's why Niese gets such a high ranking. But, you know, the Mets system obviously has nothing in the upper levels.

Carson Dominates Third Straight Start

3

8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 K, 1 BB. Coming into the night, Carson had an outstanding 60.5 GB% in the SAL, and he added to that by recording 14 groundouts. In his last three starts, Carson has given up just 2 ER and 12 hits in 21 innings, though the 10/7 K/BB over that stretch indicates he's due for more than a little bit of regression. Still, he's been a groundball dominant pitcher in the SAL this year, and that trend could play pretty well in the FSL sooner than later.
