A really good piece by Michael Lee on the ups and downs of Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards over the last several seasons.

"The Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks are closing in on a multi-player trade that will launch Washington's long-anticipated rebuilding project in earnest and send Wizards mainstays Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood to the Mavericks, according to sources close to the situation.

Although the deal could take until Monday to be finalized, sources said that the teams have essentially agreed on the principal pieces: Butler, Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson to Dallas for Josh Howard and Drew Gooden."

ESPN's Lester Munson writes that it will be very difficult, and extremely unlikely, for the Wizards to void Gilbert Arenas's contract.

This article doesn't have anything to do with the Wizards, but it's one of the few things I've ever read criticizing Michael Jordan. Definitely a good read.

"Flip Saunders appears to be at the top of the Washington Wizards' coaching wish list, according to league sources.

While no deal has been struck, one source said the two sides have had preliminary discussions."

Bullets Forever McGuire's coming on strong

This season has obviously been disappointing, but the biggest bright spot up to this point has arguably been the improved play of Dominic McGuire.

McGuire has played in at least 33 minutes in his last five games, and he's grabbed at least 10 rebounds in four of the five. He scored at least 10 points in three of those games and blocked at least one shot in each game.

McGuire will never be a big scorer, but he has improved his ability to knock down open jump shots just inside the three-point line. Combine that with his ability to rebound, block shots, and play defense, and the Wizards may have a younger and better improvement over DeShawn Stevenson.

Unlike Stevenson -- of last year -- McGuire can't consistently knock down threes, but he's a better rebounder and at least on the same level defensively -- if not better. Just look what his defense did to Ben Gordon last night: 3-14 shooting, 11 points.

I'm glad that he got a chance, and I hope Nick Young gets a similar opportunity to showcase his abilities for more than a few games in a row before the season is over.

Bullets Forever Basketball Book Thread

In the latest game thread there were a few comments about basketball books to read, so I figured I'd start a rough list. Feel free to post with good basketball books you've read in the past.

Here's a rough list of some I've read and some people mentioned earlier:

  • The Last Amateurs
  • Seven Seconds or Less
  • Heaven Is a Playground
  • The Breaks of the Game
  • Loose Balls
  • When Nothing Else Matters
  • Just Ballin
  • The Jordan Rules
  • Keepin It Real
  • Black Planet
  • Unfinished Business
  • The Last Shot

Again, I might have left some out. Hopefully this helps.

15. JaVale McGee, Wizards
Several players from this year's draft class have turned out better than expected, but McGee has received much less attention than the others.

Although the Wizards are mired at 1-8, McGee has been a revelation with his length, coordination and shooting ability for his size. Seen as a project on draft day, he's shooting 52.0 percent from the floor while averaging 15.9 points and 11.0 boards per 40 minutes, and he has taken over Washington's starting center spot. Best of all, he's only 20 years old, so he should be able to improve plenty from this point forward.
