Questions with Hot Time in Old Town ahead of RSL-Fire match

1. As we now see Chicago Fire only once a year - it's like a family reunion or some such - most of us don't really know what you've been up to for the last year. What've things been like?

Well, not so good this year. as you probably remember, we came into the last month of 2012 in good form. Rather than locking up a top spot in the East, we slid into the playoffs and got knocked out against Houston. Heading into the season, most of us here at HTIOT were pretty confident of a top 3 finish in the East. As it stands now, we will be lucky to climb out of the doldrums we are in. It's a long season of course, but right now nothing can go right in Fire land.

Heading into the game this weekend, Real Salt Lake will be facing a team that has featured a decently solid defense the past month. We are still prone to costly mental lapses on the back line however. The Fire have a midfield that just can't put it together yet, and a striking duo that, well, doesn't score goals. As you can see, it's not been fun so far in the Windy City this season.

2. On that note, it doesn't seem you're doing at all well this season. How can that be corrected? Is this season going to just "one of those seasons," or can the Fire pull out of their slump?

It's pretty evident this isn't a slump that we were hoping the first few weeks. The team has regressed badly from last year. Although the sum of the off-season moves would have seemed to be positive, the production from those moves has been non-existent. And a rash of injuries has not made it any better.

While the Fire did re-acquire Bakary Soumare today to help fortify a hurting back line, more help is needed. Depth issues still persist on defense, and left wing is still a question mark. Dilly Duka has yet to really nail down the spot, and Joel Lindpere hasn't fared any better. As mentioned above, the Fire just can't score. The team has 6 total goals this year. So, yeah...

3. Getting Soumare back, huh? Think he plays Saturday? Should RSL fans be worried if he returns?

Although it's not certain he will play Saturday, I think odds are good he at least makes an appearance, if not a start. And it would be a definite boost to the team. Fire fans are happy today hearing about the move and his return to the Windy City. His return should certainly make it tougher for the RSL attack. While the Fire have been employing a CB duo of Austin Berry and Jalil Anibaba, the Men in Red will be much better off with a Soumare/Berry pairing.

The Fire have been struggling at right back, with Jalil Anibaba the only thing closest to a true RB on the roster. This move will allow him to slot back into the position that he is trying to grow in to. RSL fans should definitely kep an eye on Soumare if he plays Saturday.

4. Not to forget other potentially impending trades, too: Mike Magee? (Please take him away, we don't want to see him thrice a season any longer.) Robbie Rogers? Michael Stephens? What will it takes for your side to finally come together?

Although Fire fans would rave if Mike Magee came to Chicago, it's hard to see LA giving him up for Robbie Rogers rights. While the Fire must maximize their value for those rights, the team will likely settle for some combination of allocation money and draft picks. Stephens would be a nice acquisition however, but his name hasn't been bandied about as much.

Fans are calling for some offensive signings this summer. Recent rumors have mentioned Francesco Totti, but that's just speculation at this point. While the team seems likely to make some moves, the problem becomes how far behind the pack we are when the summer window finally comes. This team is a mess right now. While the additions of Soumare and another couple of players should help, a complete rebuild could also be in order too. Fans are hoping this is not the case, but it is looking more and more likely by the game.

Amid lawsuit, internal strife, XanGo sponsorship future seems uncertain

With RSL kit sponsor — and long-time financial supporter through sponsorship means — XanGo suffering through internal strife, the odds that Real Salt Lake finds a new sponsor in 2014 grow. The most recent lawsuit includes claims of international bribery, financial impropriety, and a host of other issues.

The lede from this AP story sums it up well: "A co-founder of exotic juice maker XanGo LLC - one of Utah's most successful brands - has filed a lawsuit claiming his partners are looting the company for exotic vacations and luxury gifts."

Should RSL be looking at new sponsors in 2014, or has XanGo proven themselves a capable partner worth continuing forward with? It's hard to dispute that the XanGo sponsorship has helped the club in not insubstantial ways.

In a Deseret News article, RSL communications were understandably mum on the matter: "Real Salt Lake values its long-standing partnership with Xango. We have no comment on the referenced litigation."

What's your take? Who would be a good kit sponsor as RSL enters a new era of ownership and financial security?

RSL likely to beat best-ever away record after strong start

With Real Salt Lake coming off a bit of a road streak — to this point, only five of our 13 matches have been at home — a home stand will be taking shape.

Indeed, with only 38 percent of the matches having been at home, RSL is the most having-been-away of all MLS sides at this point. New York Red Bulls, with 42 percent home matches, come close.

We could harp on about the reasons for this — and I think we can point to typical rough weather in the early goings of MLS seasons for a pretty good one — but it really would be more interesting to take a look at the effects.

With 10 points from 8 away matches — 1.25 points per match — Jason Kreis's side is already very much in the range of the best away records the club's had. Slightly surprisingly, the very strong 2010 regular season doesn't lead the way. That feat belongs to the 2012 season, when RSL picked up 1.29 points per road game.

To be at this level after the first two months of the season shouldn't go unnoticed. This was a season that saw key players out with injury to start and the integration of new players into the setup, and it should be noted there were plenty of both.

Even more notably and perhaps explanatory of the shift, RSL has won half as many away matches as last season, leaving the club on pace to eke through the record. Should the record improve as the season goes on and squad cohesion is reached, it will be no mean feat to break past.

There are inherent risks, of course. Squad cohesion could dissipate after early success — that's not an untold story — or complacency could rise, or injuries could decimate the depth. To worry intensively about injuries before they happen is a fool's errand, though, and it's best to simply plan for the worst case. Squad cohesion is a tricky thing, but if the Kreis era is anything to go on, it's not likely to emerge as an issue. With the squad likely hit by international absences in the summer, the depth — and depth with a propensity for playing well on the road, at that — will prove valuable.

It's not exactly show-stopping stuff, 1.25 points per away match, but in MLS, away wins are hard to come by. Even the best clubs find themselves netting in the range of 1.5 to 1.6 points per away match, for comparison.

With the rest of the season ahead and a substantial home stand in plain view, Real Salt Lake will be hopeful to push on and prepare for the busy season ahead.

Grande Sports Academy compiled this list of former and current academy players who have been plying their trade outside the club — including Carlos Salcedo, who's now started two RSL matches, and Ricardo Velazco, who scored in the US Open Cup.

RSL to face Atlanta Silverbacks in US Open Cup

Real Salt Lake will face Atlanta Silverbacks in the US Open Cup after the NASL side defeated NPSL neighbors Georgia Revolution 3-2 in Conyers, Atlanta today.

Georgia Revolution didn't go down without a fight, equalizing once to make the match 1-1 and edging back into contention after pulling a goal back to make it 3-2. Revolution created a surprising number of chances for an ostensibly fourth-division side, and at times, it seemed they might even equalize late.

Atlanta Silverbacks will travel to Rio Tinto Stadium for a May 28 match, where Real Salt Lake will be hoping to find success in the Cup. They notably fell 3-1 to NASL's Minnesota Stars last year after purchasing the rights to host the match.

It will be particularly important to win, as winning the US Open Cup would secure RSL a berth in CONCACAF Champions League play, one of the stated goals of the club.

RSL has won twice and lost twice against lower-league sides in Open Cup play.

The fog around NY2 has lifted and what's emerged is almost (but not entirely) unexpected. England's Manchester City FC and the New York Yankees are partners. An interesting development, to be sure. They're set to start playing in 2015.

RSL breaks through Chivas defense over and over in 4-1 win

Ned Grabavoy scored two goals on breakaway opportunities for his first two of the season as Real Salt Lake broke past the Chivas USA defense over and over and over in a 4-1 road win.

Grabavoy scored his first goal of the season after breaking through the defense only three minutes into the match - his first regular season goal for the club since 2010. The three-man Chivas back line certainly takes much of the blame for the opportunity, but Grabavoy put nary a foot wrong against Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. Javier Morales's pass may not have been entirely intentional, but Grabavoy's run was perfectly positioned for a pass in that direction.

Kyle Beckerman nearly doubled the lead at the eight-minute mark with a shot Kennedy could only parry wide.

The strangest point in the match may have taken place in the 30th minute, when Kennedy stepped up for a free kick just outside RSL's 18-yard box. His free kick hardly even smashed into the wall - it was more of a trickle - but the clearance landed at the feet of a Chivas defender and Kennedy was given a chance to run the 90 yards back into defense.

Chivas picked up the first two yellow cards of the match around the 33rd minute mark for bad tackles in consecutive plays.

Former Philadelphia Union player Gabriel Farfan entered the match at the half for his new club after signing for Chivas USA last week.

Joao Plata scored only four minutes into the second half after Kyle Beckerman intercepted a Chivas pass with his head. His pass dropped perfectly for Plata, whose speed carried him past a static, narrow central defense, and his finish from an angle

Chivas USA scored in the 55th minute after Nick Rimando missed out on a cross; Jorge Villafana sent a looping header into the back of the net, shocking a defense caught rather asleep.

Only moments later, Chivas nearly scored again, but Rimando made up for his earlier hesitation when he

Robbie Findley entered with 30 minutes remaining to make his first appearance since falling prey to injury earlier in the season. His first chances emerged immediately after; both after he burst past the defense. The second saw him one-on-one with Dan Kennedy, but Findley tried to round his opponent and the chance trickled frustratingly away

Grabavoy nearly had his second of the match after Plata made his way toward the touchline and cut the ball back to him, but a heavy touch saw RSL win a corner instead.

Yordany Alvarez checked in for goalscorer Plata in the 72 minute as RSL coach Jason Kreis looked to seal a 2-1 win on the road.

Luis Gil had a prime chance emerge after making a good run through the middle, but profligacy — the theme of the night — saw him stall in front of Kennedy before Robbie Findley fired the ball well above the goal.

Robbie Findley put RSL 3-1 up in the 78th minute, scoring his second goal since his returning to Real Salt Lake capitalizing on a missed clearance following a low Yordany Alvarez cross. His finish

Yordany Alvarez picked up the first RSL yellow in the 83rd minute after moving in for a tackle and missing out on the ball - and perhaps the player.

Khari Stephenson was RSL's final substitution, coming on for Luis Gil in the final minutes of the match.

Ned Grabavoy ended the match nearly exactly as he finished, scoring in the 90th minute on a breakaway - when the more nominally attacking players were profligate in their finishing, Grabavoy placed both his shots perfectly for a brace.

Carlos Salcedo started alongside a returning Nat Borchers in the center of defense, with Chris Schuler dropping to the bench on the night. It's hard to argue with the decision: Salcedo and Borchers were an effective pairing.

Lineup thoughts

Carlos Salcedo starting ahead of Chris Schuler is an interesting decision. Schuler trained without apparent issue on Saturday, which would seem to indicate that it's a tactical decision instead of a fitness decision, although that's difficult to say definitively.

Tactically, Salcedo and Borchers might be a better fit than Schuler and Borchers. Chris Schuler has struggled at times to fill the role — perhaps it is a case of he and Borchers playing a bit too similarly by their defensive nature, but Schuler sometimes steps forward recklessly and makes costly mistakes.

One thing is certain: After RSL went ahead twice against Montreal and still managed to concede three goals and lose the match, defensive corrections have been needed. It's a fascinating progression the young center back has made since officially signing this season. Will a strong defensive display give him a chance to keep a spot at the center of defense?

Kwame Watson-Siriboe misses out through suspension; Olmes Garcia and Alvaro Saborio miss out through injury. Garcia picked up a knock in training on Saturday, while Saborio is still working his way back from a quad tear.

With Saborio out, rookie Devon Sandoval continues up top.

Luis Gil is back in the side after missing out; Sebastian Velasquez drops back to the bench. Robbie Findley also makes his return to the bench after suffering knee issues.

Correcting defensive errors, finishing top RSL's priorities against Chivas

With another match against Chivas USA looming — that'll be two in the last month, with the final meeting coming at home on the last day of the regular season — Real Salt Lake will be wondering how to correct the problems they saw last Saturday.

It wasn't entirely problematic: Going ahead twice shows good resolve and better ability, even if the finishing wasn't perfect throughout. But the defending — from all areas of the pitch — was lacking. Two crossed balls leading to goals puts pressure on the defense to improve. With Nat Borchers back in the side, that should happen fairly naturally.

That less-than-perfect finishing against Montreal will need some correction, though. The two RSL goals notwithstanding — and one of those was an own-goal — 21 shots, with seven on-target and seven blocke, should produce more. Kyle Beckerman was pointed in calling for better finishing after the match. The struggles were encapsulated by a late, late shot from Joao Plata saved easily by the goalkeeper after he broke free of the defense.

Despite being listed as out in the most recent injury report, striker Alvaro Saborio has been participating in full training this week, as has the other out-listed player, Cole Grossman. Rich Balchan, who underwent successful shoulder repair surgery, naturally missed out on training.

Should Saborio miss out, one would imagine Devon Sandoval would be given another start. Who exactly he would partner with is a bit of a mystery, but that one, too, could be dictated by injury. Joao Plata and Olmes Garcia would seem to be good to go, but Robbie Findley has yet to play since RSL's match against Chivas USA on April 20. Findley's been listed as "questionable," though the answer to the question isn't really known.

All other expected starters seem ready; whether Luis Gil starts or not is a bit of a question after he was rested last week. Whether his ankle is bothering him or not on the day is difficult to say definitively.

Nat Borchers, who has been in full training, is over his little bout of influenza (or flu-like symptoms, as the case may be) and undoubtedly starts. With Kwame Watson-Siriboe out through suspension, Carlos Salcedo will almost certainly travel as a substitute.

After successful surgery, unlucky Rich Balchan to miss up to six months

Real Salt Lake defender Rich Balchan will miss between four and six months after successful shoulder surgery, RSL communications has released today.

It's not the first time he's missed time because of injury and surgery. After impressing in his 2011 rookie season for Columbus Crew, the flexible defender didn't play a match in 2012 after having to undergo multiple surgeries to correct a sports hernia.

This injury is rather different, rendering the player one of the more unlucky where injuries are concerned. He suffered a shoulder dislocation against LA Galaxy reserves in late April, which was treated. Only minutes later, he suffered another dislocation. It's the second left shoulder surgery the player has had in recent years, the club reported.

Balchan is yet to play for Real Salt Lake in a senior game, but he impressed in his reserves appearances. Still only 24, the news will come as a disappointment to the promising young player.

Rimando one of six GKs called up to USMNT, won't miss RSL matches

Nick Rimando is one of six goalkeepers to be called up in the most recent U.S. Men's National Team roster, but he won't join the side until June 9, when World Cup qualifications will already be underway. As a result, he should miss no matches for the club.

The roster, which is for friendlies against Belgium (May 29) and Germany (June 2), as well as three 2014 World Cup qualifiers: Jamaica on June 7, Panama on June 11, and Honduras on June 18 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Camp begins May 26, but players may arrive later owing to club commitments. As such, it's difficult to imagine Rimando will miss the match against Chicago Fire the preceding day.

In a press release, national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann noted a desire to keep MLS goalkeepers from missing matches.

"We have some excellent backup keepers starting with Nick Rimando, who's playing an outstanding season for Real Salt Lake and has done great with us every time he's come into camp," Klinsmann said. "We're also excited about the goalkeepers who come after him: Bill Hamid, Sean Johnson and Tally Hall. It's exciting that we can rotate them a bit in these upcoming couple of weeks because we don't want MLS goalies to miss too many of their games."

Klinsmann also noted in the press release that Kyle Beckerman is very much in line for a Gold Cup call-up.

RSL to host US Open Cup third round, will face NASL or NPSL side

Real Salt Lake will officially host its third round match in US Open Cup play, and the opponent will be either Atlanta Silverbacks, an NASL side, or Georgia Revolution, an NPSL side — the fourth tier of American soccer.

The match could see a younger group playing, including a potential first-team debut of Enzo Martinez, who is expected to return to RSL for the match and surrounding reserves engagements. But given perennial troubles in the tournament, Jason Kreis may be tempted to field a full-strength lineup in the tournament — although that historically has had little effect.

RSL's Open Cup performances in the past have left much to be desired, with the club losing 3-1 to Minnesota Stars, an NASL side. Real Salt Lake management bought the hosting rights to that match, and the fans proved the decision at least somewhat a good one, with over 17,000 in attendance — a club record.

Winning would give RSL a berth into the CONCACAF Champions League, which is one of the club's long-stated goals.

The match is part of season ticket holder packages and will use the "Bonus Game A" ticket provided.

Robbie Russell retires, pursuing medical field

Former RSL right back and defensive stronghold Robbie Russell has retired from D.C. United and will be pursuing medical school — at Georgetown Medical School, reportedly the fifth-most selective medical institution in the U.S.

While the game will miss him, much congratulations are in order for his acceptance into Georgetown's pre-med program.

Watson-Siriboe suspended after Di Vaio incident

Kwame Watson-Siriboe has been suspended for a match by the MLS Disciplinary Committee after an incident with Marco Di Vaio during the match against Montreal Impact.

In the incident, it appeared Watson-Siriboe failed to avoid Di Vaio's head with his foot, and while it seemed he didn't rake his studs directly across Di Vaio's face, he did swing his foot across Di Vaio's head rather than trying to avoid him after a tackle.

The suspension leaves Watson-Siriboe ineligible for RSL's match against Chivas USA; Nat Borchers, who had been ill, may well be available on Sunday, as will center backs Carlos Salcedo and Aaron Maund.

While the suspension doesn't leave Real Salt Lake in a delicate position as it may have in years past, it does...

Stats at a Glance: Morales shines in RSL's painful loss to Montreal Impact

Javier Morales had a strong match against Montreal Impact despite RSL's loss — but it's sometimes difficult to quantify that. In an effort to do just that, I've drilled into Javi's stats and tried to break down what he did well.

Morales was the player most involved in RSL's passing on Saturday. Passes: 55/68 (81%)

He also led RSL in key passes — not an unusual mark. Key passes: 6

The overwhelming majority of his passes were, as ever, in the attacking half — 76 percent of them. Passes in the attacking half: 41/52 (79%)

He was RSL's most involved midfielder in the second half, and he dictated play. Passes in the second half: 33/43, 3 key (77%) Passes by other midfielders in the second half: Beckerman, 31/35, 1 key (89%); Grabavoy, 19/19, 3 key (100%); Velasquez, 8/9 (89%); Stephenson, 4/8, 1 key (50%)

He also spreads play to players in good shooting positions very well. Players shooting after a Morales key pass: Garcia (18'), Sandoval (24'), Beckerman (20', 48'), Plata (85'), Schuler (89') He got on the end of some shots himself, too. Shots: 3 (one blocked, one on-target, one off-target)

While RSL sometimes struggles with crossing, Morales thrived. Crossing: 5/9 (55%)

Of course, he was involved defensively, too. Tackles: 2/3

And as ever, he's always in a position to pick up the ball when either side loses possession. Recoveries: 7

RSL Women roster announced — including a Rimando

Real Salt Lake Women announced their roster today with their first match on Saturday in Orem. The roster is largely made of former and current college athletes and amateur players with an interspersing of professionals. To top it off, there's a familiar last name floating in the mix: Rimando.

Midfielder Jacqui Rimando, wife of the inimitable Nick Rimando, has a history in professional soccer: She was part of the Washington Freedom, a side in the now-defunct Women's United Soccer Association. WUSA shuttered in 2004 and is but one of several women's leagues to have done so since the creation of MLS.

There's representation on the team from all major colleges in the area — University of Utah, BYU, Utah State, Weber State and Utah Valley are all represented.

RSL Women's first match is Saturday at 5 p.m. in Orem, Utah against Utah Starzz at Orem Lakeside Complex, Field #7.

RSL, in the lead twice, loses 3-2 in Montreal after late stoppage goal

Real Salt Lake scored two road goals and held the lead twice but couldn't capitalize on their efforts, losing 3-2 to Montreal Impact in stoppage time.

Matteo Ferrari scored in the 93rd minute from a corner kick in which he was unmarked, giving Montreal Impact the 3-2 win nearly as late as it could go.

Marco Di Vaio equalized in the 80th minute after making a brilliant run through the defense; a ball into him saw the Italian finish just past Nick Rimando with the ball bouncing off the post and curling into the back of the net. It did appear that Di Vaio was offside, but with Wingert slow in the offside trap, it's hard to blame the linesman for not spotting the infraction.

The goal came only minutes after Kyle Beckerman put Real Salt Lake back in the lead in the 78th minute, with RSL's captain scoring on a neat turn in the box

Real Salt Lake got the rub of the fake plastic green in the 7th minute when Lovel Palmer, on the right side for Tony Beltran, sent a cross in toward Devon Sandoval. The ball hopped off Matteo Ferrari's foot and looped over goalkeeper Troy Perkins, giving the visitors an early lead.

Felipe scored in the 39th minute to equalize for the Impact, finishing at the near post after the defense failed to deal with a low cross from Justin Mapp.

Olmes Garcia nearly scored in the 15th minute after Sebastian Velasquez beat two defenders on the right side of the box and laid a ball off for Devon Sandoval, who may or may not have had a touch before the ball rebounded between two Impact defenders. Garcia's deflected shot - or the poor clearance from a defender - ended just wide of the post.

Kyle Beckerman put a low shot just past the far post in the 48th minute as RSL looked to re-establish some sort of dominance in the second half, but it didn't last long as both sides traded attacks for the remainder of the half. Both defenses struggled to deal with the attacks on display.

Joao Plata, in late for Devon Sandoval, had a perfect opportunity one-on-one with Troy Perkins, but his shot right at the goalkeeper kept him from netting his first RSL goal.

Nick Rimando saw yellow after pushing Sanna Nyassi away after the Gambian grabbed his arm.

Sebastian Velasquez, Kwame Watson-Siriboe, and Lovel Palmer were all handed starts, with Luis Gil, Carlos Salcedo, and Tony Beltran each on the bench.

Khari Stephenson was RSL's first substitute, brought on for a lagging Sebastian Velasquez around the 70th minute.

Carlos Salcedo is on the bench after having his red-producing-yellow card rescinded from Wednesday. He's the sole central defender. Kwame Watson-Siriboe has traveled for this match after missing the last two following the birth of his child.

Real Salt Lake face Montreal Impact in an early match today, and while injuries and illness take their toll, a potentially unchanged starting lineup could grant some much-needed continuity for once.

Alvaro Saborio, as expected, remains out with a quad tear, and Rich Balchan (shoulder separation) and Cole Grossman (concussion) both remain out. Questionable are Yordany Alvarez, with ankle bruising; Nat Borchers, with influenza; Robbie Findley, with knee problems; and Olmes Garcia, with an adductor strain.

Garcia's appearance — both on the bench and in the match — on Wednesday would seem to indicate that he is closest to recovery between him and Findley. His goal on Wednesday was another in a line of opportunities he's created, and when fit, he's surely arguing strongly for a starting place.

Carlos Salcedo could start after having a second yellow rescinded from Wednesday's match; in an interview with the young defender on ESPN700, he indicated he could be in line for another start. With Borchers potentially out for the match with illness, Salcedo starting would provide some excitement. However, Kwame Watson-Siriboe has traveled to Montreal after missing the last two matches following the birth of his child, and as such may be in line for a start. Still, Salcedo's fitness and performance in midweek could see him win out.

He'd play alongside an unchanged remainder of the back four, one must imagine, with Chris Schuler, Tony Beltran, and Chris Wingert there to keep Montreal Impact at bay.

The midfield should remain unchanged, with Kyle Beckerman, Ned Grabavoy, Javier Morales, and Luis Gil getting the starts; some argument could be made that Velasquez has done enough to warrant a start, but Gil's goalscoring and keen vision could be enough to keep him in the lineup from the get-go. Whether he starts or not, Velasquez is almost certain to see the pitch, having been a substitute in the last four consecutive matches.

If Garcia isn't ready to start, Joao Plata and Devon Sandoval are almost inevitably the starting pair. Sandoval scored his first professional goal on Wednesday — a poacher's effort hit with immense power — and while Plata was fairly quiet on the night, he pulled in two assists against Vancouver a week ago. The two have developed an early understanding and more time together would only aid that.

While injuries and illness have hurt, there are certainly advantages to younger players receiving minutes early in the season and, for some, in their careers.

Carlos Salcedo red card rescinded

RSL communications is reporting that Carlos Salcedo's red-card-producing-yellow-card has been rescinded, which means the player will be eligible for tomorrow's match.

Interestingly, the card has been applied to Beltran, and if I'm to be honest, I have no idea what it's really for. A foul? I didn't see one — or at least much of one.

At any rate, it's great to see, because we might really need him on Saturday. And that he did well enough on Wednesday to be eligible for consideration is remarkable in and of itself.

Lagerwey on youth development, small market disadvantages

Garth Lagerwey talks to MLSSoccer.com in this look at youth development, MLS academies, exceptions and much more — and there are some interesting rules involved here, like the out-of-area exceptions allowed for sides.

I'm of the opinion — like a commenter on that article — that it's more important to develop intelligently than in massive numbers. Obviously we're at a numbers disadvantage, but it seems we've got a great setup and we're now producing players who I'm convinced will see regular MLS time in four to five years — once they're out of college. What do you think?

Questions with Mount Royal Soccer: Why early success for Montreal Impact?

1. By all accounts, the Impact have been doing well - they've got the third-highest points-per-game rate right now. What's been the key to the early success?

Our success can be directly linked to our defense. Goalkeeper Troy Perkins is having one of the best seasons of his great MLS career. On the Le Footy Weekly podcast, we've given him 'superhero' status and have named him the 'Boy Wonder'. Perkins has yet to have a poor game and has even been able to steal a few points for us (during our recent game against San Jose, we would have lost about 7-2 instead of earning a 2-2 draw, all thanks to him).

In front of Perkins, you have our stellar defensive line. When healthy, Alessandro Nesta is as good as it gets. He is the team's general and everything flows through him. He has been hurt of late and we've seen a dip in defensive chemistry but the Impact have maintained a 'bend but don't break' mentality that has allowed them to remain a dominant force.

Matteo Ferrari is as smooth and solid as they come. Another rock in at centre back. When he and Nesta are on the field, there is no better duo in the MLS. Hassoun Camara's versatility at both full back and centre back has helped us cover injuries without getting weak in the middle. Jeb Brovsky has been lights out at full back. Capable of playing on both sides of the field, Brovsky isn't flashy but he is all heart and never gets caught out of position.

Injuries and fatigue have begun to creep up and with Nesta being unavailable, the inconsistent Dennis Iapichino has been called into duty. With a bit more playing time, the hope is that his confidence and level of play will only get better.

2. With four players in your squad in on loan, what's the squad cohesion like?

Squad cohesion has been fantastic. Everyone has bought into Coach Marco's system. Whether you are on loan or a player belonging to the club, everyone is considered a member of the team and everyone knows their role. The rotation of players in the starting XI has been great so far and those who merit the playing time have been on the field. There is a battle for minutes but management has great communication with each of the players and everyone knows that the season is long and opportunities to earn minutes will be plenty.

3. You had five players listed as out for the midweek match - how many of those have a chance to play on Saturday? How is your side responding to injuries?

The squad has responded relatively well to the number of injuries that have come up recently. Many of the players on the bench have been waiting for their chance to play and prove themselves. Every player knows that there are minutes to be earned so when they are called into the game, they better give it their all.

Daniele Paponi is out long term. We won't see him back for at least another month. Alessandro Nesta and Davy Arnaud are doubtful. We haven't heard much about Andrea Pisanu or what his status will be this weekend.

Nelson Rivas has been injured since pre-season. No timetable for his return.

Scouting report: Who should RSL be paying special attention to that might normally fly under the radar?

I'll go with Andres Romero. The Argentinian midfielder is still playing some inconsistent Soccer but he is getting stronger. His performances are getting better as he is getting used to the MLS game. Extremely dangerous at times, quiet and unseen at others, he has the ability to create plays from nothing and can fire the ball from anywhere. He's been a great addition so far for the Impact.

A penalty save and two rebounded goals ensured three points for Real Salt Lake against New England Revolution in an exciting - if frustrating - road match.

Olmes Garcia scored the game-winning goal for RSL from a rebounded Kyle Beckerman shot, and Devon Sandoval scored his first goal for the club - again, from a rebounded shot. Nick Rimando receives the late plaudits, though, making a penalty save from a weak and unjust penalty kick.

Carlos Salcedo made his first start for the club, marking a milestone in the club's history. Salcedo is the first academy graduate to play and now to start for the club.

New England started out on the front foot with some strong attacking measures early in the first half, with a series of corners and throw-ins, but Nick Rimando was essential - particularly after preventing an early goal after RSL's offside trap backfired.

Luis Gil had RSL's first real opportunity of the match with a 10th minute shot from just outside the box that ended up over the bar.

The majority of the first half, though, consisted of New England taking the occasional corner, Nick Rimando claiming it, and RSL struggling to break down the Revs' defense.

In the 48th minute, Rimando made a low save off a Fagundez shot after Beckerman lost out on a tackle; Beltran cleared before the defense fell asleep rather immediately after, forcing another save from the right back.

New England scored only shorter thereafter when Schuler missed out on a clearance, leaving Rowe on a clean run for a cross inside to Ryan Guy, who finished past Rimando with a beautiful shot.

Sebastian Velasquez entered the match in the 59th minute for Luis Gil, who had no joy on the night with a series of bad passes and a lackluster performance defensively. Velasquez injected not just his skill on the ball, but a constant desire for the

Olmes Garcia entered in the 68th minute for Joao Plata, and when he did, he changed the dynamics of the match, finding good space in the channels.

Sandoval nearly scored 76th minute with a shot that the Revs keeper barely got a hand on and spilled for a New England clearance. It was just a minute later that Sandoval equalized after a bit of chaos in the box following a Sebastian Velasquez shot. His goal came seven minutes into his MLS career - a good mark for the strong striker who will certainly be seeing more time with Alvaro Saborio out with injury.

Sandoval came out of the match in the 83rd minute for Abdoulie Mansally, who saw yellow only shortly after coming into the match. He played as a left winger, with Chris Wingert shifting a bit centrally to shore things up.

Olmes Garcia scored RSL's second goal in the 89th minute after Kyle Beckerman's shot rebounded off the goalkeeper - the Revolution had no chance.

Things didn't quiet down, though: The referee sent Carlos Salcedo off for a perceived handball in the box - in which he committed no such foul - and Nick Rimando saved the ensuing penalty from Saer Sene. Kyle Beckerman made the ensuing clearance to ensure three points on the road for Real Salt Lake.

RSL appealing Salcedo red card with hopes for Saturday start

Real Salt Lake will be appealing the sending off of Carlos Salcedo, club communications confirmed tonight. Salcedo was shown a second yellow card in the 90th minute of play — though for exactly what is difficult to say.

What seems most likely is that the referee saw a handball or a foul, although replays clearly indicate that neither was the case, and the closest player to committing a handball on the play was Tony Beltran. It would also seem that Beltran didn't commit a handball.

RSL coach Jason Kreis said he was hopeful of a successful appeal.

"I think we are all confused because it appears that it was the wrong person that he yellow carded," he told reporters after the match. "I'm hopeful that the referees sort it out now, before...

Carlos Salcedo first academy player to start for RSL

Only four days after making his first-team debut for Real Salt Lake, Carlos Salcedo is starting his first professional match with Real Salt Lake.

The young center back, who came through the Chivas Guadalajara youth setup, signed with Real Salt Lake at the beginning of the season after joining the club in the middle of 2012 for an extended period. He's impressed enough now that he's starting an MLS match.

On Saturday, he came in as a late defensive substitution to preserve a win. Tonight, he starts from the outset. It's been an impressive season for the youngster so far,

With RSL's academy coaches moving practice so the youngsters can watch, it's safe to say that eyes are on the kid. And he's very much a kid: Only 19, he's very young for a center back. His best is certainly in front of him. It bodes well.

Carlos Salcedo told Grande Sports Academy PR that he's making the first steps in his professional career: "Now I need to have a good career and then the third step is to go to Europe. Little by little it's all going to the right direction."

And while injuries may have set the cogs in motion for Salcedo's start, the player has instilled incredible confidence in the coaches.

Exactly what the title says: Jeff Attinella is on-loan at Ft. Lauderdale Strikers. There's no real surprise that he has been sent on loan, as it was either him or Lalo Fernandez that was likely to go, get minutes and get experience. With no reserves matches for a bit, he's off to get time. I wouldn't read anything about the battle for spots into this.

Borchers illness, squad injuries throw uncertainty into mix ahead of Revs match

A handful of RSL players could miss today's match at New England Revolution as injuries and illness take their toll on the squad.

Nat Borchers is set to miss out through illness, which is surely a blow to the defense. Kwame Watson-Siriboe was absent Saturday after the birth of his first child; he may be available for the match, but his involvement is surely in doubt. Should Watson-Siriboe miss out, Carlos Salcedo could get his first start only days after being handed his debut. Chris Wingert could always move centrally if necessary.

Alvaro Saborio remains out for the match and will be for some time; Robbie Findley and Olmes Garcia both remain doubtful after missing out this weekend. That could leave Joao Plata and Devon Sandoval in a position to start again after Saturday, which would at least inject some continuity into a forward line hit hard by injuries in 2013.

The midfield remains relatively unscathed, but with this the first of three matches in a relatively cluttered set, some rotation could take place — though there's not any room to rotate in other positions, the midfield might utilize the opportunity. Still, with the defense a bit hit by Borchers' absence, protecting from the midfield will be essential.

It would be reasonable, though, to expect an unchanged lineup in the midfield: Javier Morales at the top, Kyle Beckerman at the back, and Ned Grabavoy and Luis Gil on the left and right, respectively.

How exactly RSL copes with the absence of Borchers will be interesting to watch unfold. Watson-Siriboe and Chris Schuler have, at times in 2012, formed a reasonable partnership. Salcedo and Schuler may be a more unproven combination, but it may be the best combination from a tactical and physical perspective, with Salcedo pushing further forward and carrying the ball out of defense, and Schuler sitting slightly further back, picking off passes and stepping when necessary.
