The Phinsider Trade Rumor

There's alot of talk going around Baltimore today that the Ravens may trade for a receiver. The name that keeps coming up is Dwayne Bowe. Also, it seems that the asking price would be a 2nd round pick. I started to think about this and we'll probably have a higher 2nd round pick to give the Chiefs and Scott Pioli is Bill Parcells' son-in-law. Starting to wonder if this rumor is true, would we get involved?

#32 pick. I'd like to take a corner here, maybe, Cason, Porter, or if another one falls so be it. I'm wondering if maybe we trade back into round 1 and take Groves? Maybe a QB or TE? ILB for the 3-4?

Again I'd love to see Cason there but I'm hearing he's the #1 corner on the Cowboys board .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... ............

The Miami Dolphins have reached a contract agreement with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long and will select him with the No. 1 overall pick in Saturday's draft, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The announcement will come at a 1:45 p.m. ET news conference.

NFL Draft Central

The NFL draft is April 26 and 27 on ESPN, starting at 3 p.m. ET. For updated coverage, bookmark our Draft Central page. Index

Despite speculation that Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells really had planned to select Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston or Virginia defensive end Chris Long, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith that since the Dolphins opened negotiations with Jake Long they were talking to him exclusively.

Long, a 6-foot-7, 313-pound senior who moved to left tackle in 2006 and started his final 26 games, was an All-America selection and Big Ten lineman of the year in each of his last two seasons.

Offensive line is considered the biggest need for the Dolphins, who went 1-15 last year.

The Phinsider RUMOR: Jake Long to Dolphins Hogwash?

[editor's note, by Matty I] The following was originally posted by "Matt" in the diaries. I've just reformatted it for front-page posting and added my thoughts below the quote. The entire article is right here. [end note]

Surely, the Fins and Bill "My Way Or The Highway . . . And A Foot Up Your Ass" Parcells would have to do everything in their power to squeeze Long into considering the offer, especially since Parcells is by all appearances committed to paying the No. 1 overall pick in 2008 less than what the first selection received in 2008. Absent such hardball tactics, the only deal that Jake Long would be doing is the JaMarcus Russell package, plus 15 percent.

So we think that these reports are all part of the broader ruse to get another player to jump on an offer that currently is on the table. And we suspect that the other player in question is Ohio State linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston.

[editor's note, by Matty I] This is an interesting theory that I've seen tossed around other places as well. And you can't ever forget to take into account Parcells' "shrewdness" and Ireland's "slip up." Could a defensive player, like Gholston, be the target? Possibly. But I'm sure we'll be reading and hearing numerous reports like this all week long. So let's just wait and see how Saturday plays out. [end note]

The Phinsider Chris Crocker Scouting Report From ESPN

2008 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 59 | Key
Alert: BT

Comment: Crocker is fast, tough and experienced. He has solid play strength and is at his best against the run. He has good intangibles. He communicates in the secondary and has tremendous value as a core special teams player. He reads his keys, reacts quickly and attacks downhill against the run. He has the speed to run the alleys while maintaining leverage on the ball. He can avoid trash and use his hands to ward off and shed blocks. He is a physical insert player who can be reckless with his body. He can cover a lot of ground quickly and has good range potential in coverage. He can pedal and open his hips. He has the ability to match up with backs and tight ends. But Crocker is inconsistent in coverage. His pattern recognition is questionable, and he sometimes seems uncomfortable in deep coverage. He is most natural in short zones. He doesn't always take proper angles to the ball. He sometimes fails to wrap up on tackles.

The Phinsider Bucs & Simms

SIMMS STAYING AWAY FROM BUCS
Posted by Mike Florio on March 27, 2008, 8:54 a.m.
With his future in Tampa decidedly undecided and no mandatory requirement to participate in voluntary offseason sessions, quarterback Chris Simms is working out on his own, and waiting to see what the Buccaneers will do.

Simms even skipped last week's "quarterback orientation" (which in Tampa requires a full-blown banquet hall), the first time he has missed the session in his NFL career.

"I just think . . . it's in my best interest to continue my own workouts and to just wait and see what happens with the team," Simms said.  "I don't really know what's going to happen.  As far as the Bucs and the quarterback position goes, it's always an adventure."

The Bucs recently brought back Brian Griese, the player who became of no value to the team in 2006 after Simms delivered in late 2005 on his perceived potential.

Last year, Simms was unable to return from a September 2006 spleen injury that resulted in the removal of the organ.  He supposedly had some type of problem with his internal balance in 2007, and was unable to get his throwing form back.

He now says he's healthy.

"I'm back to 100 percent and just excited about getting back on the field again," he said.

But while the Bucs likely are hoping to get value in exchange for Simms' services, we can't imagine any team giving much for a guy who by all appearances stored his mojo in his spleen.  At a bare minimum, Simms will have to get on the practice field and show what he can do before anyone will seriously consider putting anything on the table.

Besides, Simms wasn't playing very well at all before the September 2006 game against the Panthers in which he reversed perceptions that he had become afraid of contact by taking a tremendous pounding in sweltering heat and continuing to keep going.

Though teams like the Vikings, who run a similar offense to the Bucs, might be interested, we're intrigued by the possibility that the guy who coached Simms' father, Bill Parcells, could try to get Chris down to Miami.  It could be that the Tuna is sitting tight because he knows that, eventually, the Bucs will cut Simms loose.

The Phinsider Chad Henne

Henne moving up on Dolphins' wish list?
> Posted by hfialkov at 11:58:41 AM

Although my partner and seemingly every NFL exec at the Combine has grown in love with Delaware quaterback Joe Flacco, it seems that the Dolphins are focusing their ardor on Michigan quarterback Chad Henne as their potential second-round pick.

My sources say that the Dolphins haven't made any contact with Flacco since checking him out at the Senior Bowl and Combine, while a radio interview by Henne with ESPN-760 host Evan Cohen indicates he could be the pick at No. 32 - if he's still there.

"They wanted to know my character, what I am as a person, as a player,'' Henne told Cohen. "[We went] through what I know, how I go about myself during the game and off the field. So, I've had good contact with them.''

Last week Dolphins quarterbacks coach David Lee and national scout Ron Labadie dined with Henne before attending his Pro Day the next day. Henne said they have another scheduled dinner with him next Tuesday in Ann Arbor, and possible a private workout on Wednesday.

The 6-1, 226-pound Henne is not as mobile or as large as the 6-6 Flacco and is more of a pocket passer, so he will need more developing. Because the Dolphins offensive line is a work in progess, expect John Beck and Josh McCown to battle it out this year while developing a young quarterback such as Henne.

Stay tuned.

I'm taking a vacation so enjoy Big O's awesome blogs.

The Phinsider Some Beck News

FLORIDA SPORTS BUZZ
Beck says he is improved, unfazed by QB challengers
Posted on Sun, Mar. 16, 2008

By BARRY JACKSON
bjackson@MiamiHerald.com

JARED LAZARUS    /    MIAMI HERALD STAFF
Dolphins quarterback John Beck scrambles during the first quarter against the Eagles on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007.
Dolphins' Taylor says he wants to stay
Although Josh McCown said he expects to be the Dolphins' starting quarterback, you won't hear any similar declaration from John Beck. But Beck explained last week why he believes he has improved, and insists he doesn't care if the Dolphins draft a quarterback in the early rounds.

In two months working with new quarterbacks coach David Lee, Beck said he has received more individual coaching on technique than he did all last season.

''It was hard last year because I was the third guy,'' he said. ''Now, it's been nice because we've been able to focus a little bit of time on me. Coach Lee definitely has helped me. I've made a lot of strides since the end of the season in some smaller detailed things'' -- including delivery and footwork.

For weeks, Beck and Lee have been watching Beck's game tape as a teaching tool. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo credits Lee for his development when they were together in Dallas.

Beck hired a trainer and has gained 11 pounds to 216, his weight last summer. ``When I'm driving, I think about third-and-8, fourth quarter, critical situation against the Jets. Last season was frustrating. That's why four days after the season, I started working for next season.''

Asked if he believes this regime has a favorable impression of him, Beck said, ''I don't know.'' (He said nobody has told him.) He ''chatted a few times'' with Bill Parcells, ``but there hasn't been any discussion of the future. It's just a get-to-know-me, get-to-know-you type deal.''

He said the Dolphins told him they were signing McCown the day it happened but didn't elaborate. McCown was told it will be an open competition, and Beck surmises that.

''The same confidence he has about himself, I have about myself,'' said Beck (62.0 passer rating, one touchdown, three interceptions in five rookie appearances). ``He wants it just as badly as I want it. I heard he's a hard-worker, very athletic guy. Those are the kind of things I feel I bring. If we both [bring] kind of the same thing, what's going to separate us is being smart, making correct decisions, getting out of bad plays.''

Would he feel let down, or a lack of confidence from management, if the Dolphins draft Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan No. 1 or another quarterback in an early round? ''No,'' he insisted. ``The way I am, I couldn't care less.

``When the opportunity comes, I have to strike. I'm not coming in to say I'm shooting to be an average quarterback and I'll be happy with that. I have such a high expectation for myself. I'm trying to be the absolute best I can.''

The Phinsider Sparano Hired!

POSTED 9:13 a.m. EST, January 16, 2008

FINS GET SPARANO

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that the Miami Dolphins have hired Cowboys offensive line coach Tony Sparano to be the team's next head coach.

Dolphins officials, per Glazer, called the other "candidates" on Wednesday morning and informed them that the job was going to Sparano.

As if they didn't already know.

There were reports more than a week ago that Sparano had been offered the job, which if true is a violation of league rules since Sparano already had a job and his work for that team was not finished.  Also, the offer reportedly was made before a minority candidate was interviewed for the position, which would seem to be a violation of the Rooney Rule.

So in roughly two days after Sparano became available to be hired, the offer was made, it was accepted, and a contract was worked out.

Meanwhile, we're hearing that Jaguars assistant head coach Mike Tice was indeed slated to interview on Monday, but the session was canceled after the Cowboys lost.  If that's true, it only confirms that the post-Sparano interviews were shams.

The Phinsider Just A Question

If the Patriots go Undefeated this year the question will come up who is the best team of all time. The 1972 Miami Dolphins, or this years Patriots. So my question is, what matters more. Would the Patriots be the best team ever because they went 19-0 and were the #1 offense ? OR, would the 1972 Dolphins be the best because they went 17-0 and were the #1 offense AND  # 1 defense ?

The Phinsider Time To Call The Cowher Household?

While I agree with some of you that Marty is a good and proven coach, I don't want to be siting here in 4 years saying, "Why can't we win in the playoffs." I think Wayne & Byran need to seriously asked themselves - Do we have Bill's phone number? All in all Cowher is a proven, hard-nosed, winning football coach. I think after this rest he's had he'll want to get back to what he loves. If we can't get Cowher I'm not sure who will be the next best option. Marty is a good one but will he replace Cam? I say yes. This is a business. What about Ferentz? There was talk about him going to Michigan. Maybe he'll want a NFL head coaching job. He comes from that Bellichick, Saban, etc... tree. What about Cowher as Coach and Parcells as GM? Would they be able to co-exist? I know this, I don't want another guy coming in here who doesn't have a track record. We need a coach to come in here and if nothen else get this team back on track. Think of Parcells and the Cowboys over the last 4-5 years.

The Phinsider 2008 Free Agents

With the talk about the Draft and Free Agents on the horizon, here's a list of Free Agents for 2008.

Top Quarterbacks

Derek Anderson, RFA, Cleveland Browns
Anderson has had one of the best seasons in all of the NFL. He's completed over 60 percent of his passes in six of eleven games, while amassing 2,758 passing yards and 22 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. While he has the benefit of strong receiving options, he has also done his job well above average. There have been rumors that the Browns may look to trade first-round quarterback selection Brady Quinn. Whether or not the rumors are true, Cleveland can't afford to let Anderson leave town after the way his play has helped the franchise turnaround. The franchise tag could be applied to Anderson, but the Browns will likely to sign him to an extension before it reaches that stage.

Rex Grossman, UFA, Chicago Bears
There seems to be debate over Grossman on a regular basis. Many fail to believe that he will ever lead any team to a title, while others argue that he's still relatively young and has shown flashes of greatness. Regardless of the side you take, there's something intriguing when it comes to the Florida alum. It may have to do with his QB rating of over 100 in seven games of the season with 148 in week two, and a rating at or below 36.8 five weeks of the season, including a rating of zero in the final game of the `06 season. The Bears seem confident in Grossman's development, and there are certainly teams that would take a chance on a player who took the snaps from center for an NFC Championship team. Given Grossman's age and the team's current status, it's a good bet that he'll be in Chicago this time next year, assuming he doesn't implode in '07.

Daunte Culpepper, UFA, Oakland Raiders
Culpepper still seems light-years away from the Pro-Bowl quarterback that he once was, but he has had four or five decent outings for Oakland this year, while also solid game manager at times. He completed a season-high 68.2 percent of his passes in a week twelve win over division rival Kansas City. He also totaled 344 passing yards against Minnesota in week eleven. With JaMarcus Russell waiting in the wings, Culpepper would be nothing more than a veteran backup heading into next season. Odds are that Culpepper looks for a starting role for another team.

Josh McCown, UFA, Oakland Raiders
McCown hit the map with a decent 2004 season while starting 13 games for the Arizona Cardinals in place of the injured Kurt Warner. McCown had the benefit of throwing to some excellent receivers that season, but in '05 Warner came back to play in a majority of the team's games. McCown didn't have the opportunity to build upon his past success. With Oakland, he has a shot at starting, and depending on his play and the team's play overall, he could stave off first overall pick Jamarcus Russell's attempt to see action. If McCown has any kind of success behind a horrendous Oakland line, he could see a decent contract from a team looking to take a risk.

Quinn Gray, UFA, Jacksonville Jaguars
Gray isn't a special player by any means, but he could serve as an athletic backup somewhere in the league. The Jaguars may pay to keep him around and behind starter David Garrard. Gray had the opportunity to play significant minutes earlier this season, but didn't show a high level of promise. In all likelihood, if Jacksonville decides not to re-sign him, Gray could struggle to find a team to play for.

Other Free Agent Quarterbacks
Ken Dorsey UFA Cleveland Browns
Ryan Fitzpatrick RFA Cincinnati Bengals
Drew Henson UFA Minnesota Vikings
Cleo Lemon UFA Miami Dolphins
Jared Lorenzen UFA New York Giants
Jamie Martin UFA New Orleans Saints

Michael Turner, UFA, San Diego Chargers
Turner will hit the market at the top of the available running backs list. Many teams will be interested in the services of "The Burner." Turner would have a chance to start for some NFL teams, but in San Diego he sees limited action behind the stellar LaDainian Tomlinson. He's just 25 years of age and over the past two seasons combined has averaged more than six yards a carry. With two career runs over 70 yards as a backup, including an 83-yard touchdown in '05, Turner has shown that he can be a force on the field. He'll get big dollars from a team looking for a new number one option.

Marion Barber, RFA, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas won't let Barber go anywhere. He's grown into one of the league's best at gaining yards after first contact and runs with a mean streak. He's rushed for 715 yards on 145 carries this season, boasting an average of 4.9 yards per rushing attempt. He's also been able to play a role in the passing game with 201 yards receiving. He has eight total touchdowns this season, halfway to his 2006 total of 16 touchdowns. The young running back could someday soon be the feature back in Dallas.

Jamal Lewis, UFA, Cleveland Browns
Lewis will be rushing behind a line that is not as strong as the one he had in Baltimore, but the Browns are an up and coming team with talent scattered throughout the roster. If the team can pull together and Lewis can regain some of his old form, he should have a solid season. Since his 2,000 yard season in 2003, Lewis has struggled to play to that level again. In recent seasons, he's looked hesitant and slow while rushing, but at 27, he has time to turn things around and start fresh in Cleveland.

Fred Taylor, UFA, Jacksonville Jaguars
The arrival and explosion of Maurice Jones-Drew puts the Jaguars in position to cut ties with the veteran Taylor. At 31, Taylor has hit the age of decline for the position and his history of injuries doesn't help his cause. He's rushed for more than 1,100 yards in each season that he has started at least 12 games, but at this point his best bet will be to find a role as a backup in `08 unless he can prove this coming season that there's still some gas in the tank.

Julius Jones, UFA, Dallas Cowboys
The more that Marion Barber III shows he can be a successful back in the NFL while shouldering a larger load, the more expendable Jones becomes. Jones has put up decent numbers each of the past two seasons with over 1,000 yards last season and four touchdowns. However, his touchdown totals have fallen each season as Barber has taken away most of his short-yardage carries. The Cowboys could look to keep Jones, but they may move on and the back may look for a new team on which he can get more carries. It's hard to say which direction the team will go, but Barber seems more and more ready to start.

Justin Fargas UFA Oakland Raiders
Fargas may still best be known for who his father is, but he's trying to change that during a stretch that has seen him carry the ball much more with starter Lamont Jordan hobbled by injuries. He's posted 100 yard games twice this season and averaged 4.6 yards per carry through week eleven. He's managed just one touchdown, though, and he just doesn't seem to be number one material. There's a chance that the Raiders retain him and give him the ball more going forward, but there should be a few teams that show some interest outside of Oakland.

Derrick Ward, RFA, New York Giants
Ward has filled in admirably for Brandon Jacobs this season. He's been able to run for 80 yards or more during four different efforts this year, and has managed to find the endzone on three occasions. He's just shy of 600 total offensive yards and should be able to add to that mark this week with Jacobs again slowed by injury. It's hard to see Ward changing teams given his RFA status, but there could be a few teams looking to try and acquire him if the price isn't too steep.

Vernand Morency, RFA, Green Bay Packers
Morency is currently listed as the starter in Green Bay, but rookie Brandon Jackson could cut into his playing time and may eventually move past him on the depth chart. Morency needs to run with a sense of urgency to keep his job, but also to ensure that he can earn a contract for next season. Morency is athletic and also has decent receiving skills for a back. Morency must begin to better understand his assignment and work on his patience in finding holes in the middle of the line.

Chris Brown, UFA, Tennessee Titans
Brown has battled injuries throughout his young career, and consistency has been a major issue as well, but after a week in which he ran for 175 yards, there's a chance he is turning a corner and making progress. If Brown can produce at even half of that week one rate for the rest of the season, he'll garner some attention on the market. His upright running style is something he has worked to improve, and he was able to rush for over 1,000 yards in 2004, when he was still raw. With running backs typically fading after 30, Brown has just three or four prime seasons left, so he'll try to land a decent-sized contract.

Other Free Agent Running Backs
Cedric Cobbs RFA Denver Broncos
T.J. Duckett UFA Detroit Lions
Noah Herron RFA Green Bay Packers
Maurice Hicks UFA San Francisco 49ers
Travis Minor UFA St. Louis Rams
Mewelde Moore UFA Minnesota Vikings
Artose Pinner UFA Minnesota Vikings
Musa Smith UFA Baltimore Ravens
Tyson Thompson RFA Dallas Cowboys
LaBrandon Toefield UFA Jacksonville Jaguars

Other Free Agent Full Backs
Mike Alstott UFA Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Brad Hoover UFA Carolina Panthers
Tony Richardson UFA Minnesota Vikings
Derrick Wimbush RFA Jacksonville Jaguars

Randy Moss, UFA, New England Patriots
With the help of quarterback Tom Brady, Moss has absolutely dominated opposing defenses this season. He looks the Randy Moss of old, and his 71 receptions for nearly 1,100 yards in eleven games bears it out. He has also racked up 16 touchdowns, making for an incredible season with five games remaining. With just one more touchdown, he'll match a career-high, and chances are he'll reach that mark in his next outing. If the Patriots can go all the way and Moss continues to be productive without stirring up controversy, the team will shell out the money to keep him in town, and Moss could easily decide that he likes New England's winning ways.

Bernard Berrian, UFA, Chicago Bears
Berrian was able to put together a decent season in '06. His 51 receptions and six touchdowns aren't overly impressive, but they do suggest that he is an improving talent and may be a strong number two option or a decent number one option down the road. His size isn't ideal, but his speed and athleticism has countered that enough to allow him to be a solid contributor. At just 26 years of age, Berrian will garner interest from teams looking to capitalize on his growth at the position.

Patrick Crayton, UFA, Dallas Cowboys
With 516 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2006, Patrick Crayton showed the Cowboys that they may have found Terry Glenn's future replacement. Crayton had solid numbers for the role he was given as the third option, but he showed signs of being a potential number two. The Cowboys will likely look to lock him up, especially if he shows continued strides this season, but if he does hit the market his speed and hands will certainly receive some attention.

Bryant Johnson, UFA, Arizona Cardinals
Johnson could fly under the radar this season, but those in the know consider him quite talented. He's overshadowed by star receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, but Johnson runs great routes, has good hands, and at 6'3" his size makes him an appealing option. He's caught at least 35 passes in each of his four seasons, including 49 receptions in 2004, and has a touchdown scored in each season, with four coming in '06. Johnson will likely find a bigger role in another offense in '08.

Drew Carter, UFA, Carolina Panthers
Carter hasn't racked up yards by any means, but he has tended to be a decent passing weapon near the endzone for quarterback Jake Delhomme. Carter has good size and runs fairly good routes. He may have a shot at being the true number two in Carolina at some point this season. If he isn't given more time, and Dwayne Jarrett gradually cuts into that time, Carter could be looking for a home elsewhere. A number two spot is something Carter will probably desire at this point in his career, and a team looking to compliment a speedy number one will consider him.

Andre' Davis UFA Houston Texans
The Virginia Tech product hasn't had the chance to play a whole lot during his career until an early season injury to Andre Johnson opened the door to more playing time. Davis responded with five solid performances in seven games, including a 117-yard effort with a score in week four against Atlanta. He currently has 471 receiving yards and three touchdowns on the season, and although Johnson's return will cut into his opportunities greatly, Davis was still able to catch a pair of passes for 30 yards during week eleven. He may not put up strong numbers, but during his stretch of opportunity he may have proven that he can be a more regular starter in the NFL.

Justin Gage UFA Tennessee Titans
Gage seems to be growing into one of quarterback Vince Young's more reliable targets over the past couple of Titans games. He broke through with seven receptions for 90 yards--and a highlight grab in the endzone-- during week ten against a good Jacksonville defensive unit. Gage followed that up with six receptions for 66 yards in a Monday Night game against Denver. Gage has good size and athleticism, and while he has struggled to hold onto the ball at all times, so has the entire team. If he can overcome the bad habits the receiving group has developed, he could be in for a decent contract extension.

Brandon Stokley UFA Denver Broncos
The Colts felt they could live without Stokley after drafting Anthony Gonzalez with a first-round pick, and the Broncos are grateful for it. Stokley's gritty presence has given Denver's passer Jay Cutler a nice down-field weapon. With 462 receiving yards and four touchdowns through ten games, Stokley has helped ease the loss of the injured Rod Smith and stepped up when needed. It's hard to imagine Denver allowing Stokley to go anywhere, as the Colts did, but on the market, Stokley will garner a good deal of attention.

Devery Henderson, UFA, New Orleans Saints
Henderson is struggling to build on the strong 2006 season that he had, when he was able to accumulate 745 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Henderson is a fast, athletic receiver, but his size will keep him from being a top-level option. Still, Henderson can serve as a strong third receiver and a decent second spot option. With just 280 yards and two scores through eleven games, he may have hurt his chances at a large payday, but he should still receive attention from a handful of teams.

L.J. Smith, TE, UFA, Philadelphia Eagles
Another younger tight end, Smith has 50 receptions or more and over 600 yards receiving during each of the past two years with the Eagles. He scored five touchdown in `06 and '04 while becoming a top option for quarterback Donovan McNabb. Smith seems to find the right place on the field and has shown great strength at his spot. Given his age, size, and apparent instincts, his phone should be ringing plenty.

Eric Johnson, TE, UFA, New Orleans Saints
Johnson had a decent first game with his new team, and if he can regain some of the form he had in 2004, he'll become one of the game's better pass-catching tight ends again. The San Francisco 49ers let Johnson go because they felt confident in Vernon Davis, and Johnson now finds himself in position to contribute within a high-powered offense. The tight end could easily become Drew Brees top weapon, which would make his 57 yard week one effort the standard. Johnson has shown he can be one of the league's better players at his position, and if he can prove that he is past the injuries that have hampered him, he could receive an extension from the Saints.

Other Free Agent Wide Receiers
Antonio Chatman UFA Cincinnati Bengals
Keary Colbert UFA Carolina Panthers
Terrance Copper UFA New Orleans Saints
Malcom Floyd RFA San Diego Chargers
Doug Gabriel UFA Oakland Raiders
D.J. Hackett UFA Seattle Seahawks
Az-Zahir Hakim UFA Miami Dolphins
Taylor Jacobs UFA Washington Redskins
Jerome Mathis RFA Houston Texans
Samie Parker UFA Kansas City Chiefs
David Patten UFA New Orleans Saints
Marcus Robinson UFA Detroit Lions

Other Free Agent Tight Ends
Stephen Alexander UFA Denver Broncos
Bryan Fletcher UFA Indianapolis Colts
John Gilmore UFA Chicago Bears
Marcus Pollard UFA Seattle Seahawks
Ben Troupe UFA Tennessee Titans
Jermaine Wiggins UFA Jacksonville Jaguars
Kris Wilson UFA Kansas City Chiefs

Ruben Brown, UFA, Chicago Bears
An aging veteran, Brown has a lot of experience opening holes for backs and allowing time for passers. He's a solid guard who holds down his position quite well. If he decides to stick around, he may have a couple of good seasons left. Teams won't line up to sign him, but there should be a handful that show interest.

Alan Faneca, UFA, Pittsburgh Steelers
Faneca seems to be the most likely of this group to leave his current team. Rumors suggest that he plans on leaving after the season and has not discussed an extension with the Steelers. Faneca is a quality guard who has started in five Pro Bowls and been selected as a first team All-Pro five times as well. He also still has some prime seasons of his career remaining. Faneca will receive the most interest at his position, could be the most coveted offensive linemen after the season, and should also be one of the most coveted players available in all of the NFL.

Flozell Adams, UFA, Dallas Cowboys
A veteran left tackle, Adams should hit the market and receive decent interest. A second-round pick in 1998, Adams has developed into one of the league's better offensive linemen. His size, experience, and performance will lure teams into making a considerable offer for his services. The Cowboys are developing young talent behind him, and depending on how that youth pans out the rest of the season, the team could allow him to leave in favor of saving some money.

Jordan Gross, UFA, Carolina Panthers
With Gross' contract voiding at season's end, the Panthers will need to increase his salary in order to keep him around. The ownership seems to agree that he deserves a pay raise, and the team appears to want to keep him around as their starting right tackle. A former first-round selection who has played well, Gross will be looking for a considerably larger check come next season.

Ryan Lilja, UFA, Indianapolis Colts
A quality guard, Lilja is relatively young and has a Super Bowl ring to call his own. The Colts will do well to sign him to an extension, but there's a chance that Lilja tests the market. In reality, the system that Lilja plays within is a nice fit, and he could easily stay because of it.

Max Starks, UFA, Pittsburgh Steelers
Starks is young and massive, and another Pittsburgh player that may leave the Steel City. He's 25 and is listed at 6'7" while weighing 337 pounds. His size and age will make him a desired player on many team's list. A top tier tackle will always garner interest and Starks may lead the free agent class at the spot because of the high level of play he has shown on the field.

Floyd Womack, UFA, Seattle Seahawks
A big, experienced guard, Womack could get a decent offer from any team missing out on a top tier target like Faneca. If Womack isn't the outright starter in Seattle this season, look for him to find work elsewhere with an expanded role guaranteed.

Jake Scott, UFA, Indianapolis Colts
Scott is the starting right guard for one of the top offensive line units in the entire NFL, and his ability to help protect Peyton Manning should equate to a nice contract number. Indianapolis has found a way to retain most of their line talent in recent seasons, and it should come as no surprise if Scott is locked into a long-term deal in the near future.

Todd Steussie UFA St. Louis Rams
Steussie has been a solid offensive tackle for several years, but he was placed on injured reserve earlier this season because of a foot injury. He's approaching forty years of age, but he may still have a good season or two in him. He should receive some attention as a free agent simply because of his experience and the position he plays.

Travelle Wharton UFA Carolina Panthers
A late third-round selection in 2004, Wharton has developed into a solid starting left tackle. He has been a key reason for the successes that the Panthers have had, and his absence last season was a key reason for the team's struggles. Wharton's rookie contract will expire at season's end, and his value on the market should be fairly strong. A quality left tackle is hard to find, and team's looking to bolster an offensive line will have to consider Wharton. Carolina will likely make every effort to work out an extension.

Other Free Agent Offensive Linemen
OG P.J. Alexander UFA Atlanta Falcons
OT Nat Dorsey UFA Cleveland Browns
OT Trai Essex RFA Pittsburgh Steelers
OG Chris Kemoeatu RFA Pittsburgh Steelers
OT Cory Lekkerkerker RFA Miami Dolphins
OT Sean Locklear UFA Seattle Seahawks
OG Brian Rimpf RFA Baltimore Ravens
OG Keydrick Vincent UFA Baltimore Ravens
OG Fred Weary UFA Houston Texans

Jared Allen, UFA, Kansas City Chiefs
Allen's sack total dropped in '06, but he still posted 7.5 and raised his tackle total a good deal. He'll be back in Kansas City for the upcoming season, but there's a good chance that he'll try the market out come next offseason. He's just 25 years of age, and has shown that he is among the league's best at his position. He'll be a high priority for several teams once the signing period opens.

Justin Smith, UFA, Cincinnati Bengals
Smith is an intriguing player. He's consistent, experienced, and has a powerful motor. With 81 total tackles and 7.5 sacks in '06, Smith showed that he was a high level end, and that he was coming into his own as a defensive leader on the Bengals. He won't command elite dollars, but he would be valuable to several teams and may find a suitor willing to open the checkbook wide.

Terrell Suggs, UFA, Baltimore Ravens
Suggs is somewhat versatile and has become a volatile opposing presence for offenses. He has the ability to play at the linebacker spot and also attack from the line at the end spot. He has grown into a top pass rusher and presents match-up problems for most teams. He's been near or above double digit sack totals in each of his four seasons with eight being his low. He is a true talent and will attract some large offers from various teams, but Baltimore will do everything they can to sign him to an extension, especially considering that he doesn't turn 25 until October.

Mike Rucker, UFA, Carolina Panthers
The veteran defensive end is heading into his mid-30s, but he's still proving to be a threat to offensive attacks. Rucker benefits from playing on a line that includes Julius Peppers, but Rucker brings some quality of his own to the position. His play in `02 and '03 was stellar, and while had hasn't reached double-digit sack totals since, he's still posted respectable totals and helped the Panthers to being regarded as a solid defensive unit. Rucker is past his prime, but he will still contribute to a team willing to give him a chance. He'll need to stay healthy to increase his stock on the free agent market.

Albert Haynesworth, UFA, Tennessee Titans
Haynesworth has come into the season determined to have a great year. He has a single sack through three games, but he seems to be getting pressure up the middle consistently, and is helping to allow other defensive linemen to have an even greater impact themselves. While quarterback Vince Young is a major reason for the team's success so far, Haynesworth and the defense he is helping to lead are also contributing significantly. If Haynesworth can keep up his current play, the Titans will find it hard to let him leave via free agency, as it would create a sizable hole to fill.

Tommy Kelly UFA Oakland Raiders
The Raiders are working to extend Kelly's contract, but the team is also giving other players a shot at challenging for the starter's role next season. Kelly has been a solid presence, even if the defense is having a down season. There's a chance that Oakland lets Kelly walk as they shift talent and bring in new talent. Kelly will bring strong interest around the league, but only a few teams will be serious about acquiring since he hasn't been consistent enough.

Mike Rucker UFA Carolina Panthers
Rucker is talented, there's no doubt about that. But just how talented may be extremely debatable. He has had the benefit of playing alongside one of the league's best defensive players in Julius Peppers. Peppers is having a down year, and so is Rucker. There is probably a connection, but Rucker will still be pursued by several teams. While Rucker has posted just one sack through ten games this season, he's had as many as twelve sacks in a season and he posted five sacks last season. His play--at least numbers-wise--has tailed off in recent seasons, but if a team is convinced that he can return to form, he get a sizable contract offer.

Corey Williams, UFA, Green Bay Packers
A starting defensive tackle for a rejuvenated and strong Green Bay team, Williams has helped the Packers become one of the better defensive units around. Williams was injured in the team's latest game, but he has been able to tally seven sacks--matching his 2006 total--along with 23 total tackles through eleven games while playing significant minutes. He has been very disruptive and will receive strong interest as a free agent this upcoming offseason.

Other Free Agent Defensive Linemen
Jordan Carstens UFA Carolina Panthers
Ebenezer Ekuban UFA Denver Broncos
Sam Rayburn UFA San Francisco 49ers
Paul Spicer UFA Jacksonville Jaguars
Randy Starks UFA Tennessee Titans
Renaldo Wynn UFA Washington Redskins

Lance Briggs, UFA, Chicago Bears
Since 2004, Briggs has been a standout linebacker for the Bears. He's overshadowed by Brian Urlacher much of the time, but Briggs gets the job done as is evidenced by the fact that he's totaled more than 100 tackles in each of the past three seasons and that he's added four sacks and five interceptions over that time. Teams are going to line up to try and entice Briggs to come play for them, and whichever team lands him will be adding one of the top weak-side defenders in the league. The chances of Briggs leaving seem good.

Tedy Bruschi, UFA, New England Patriots
The safe bet is that Bruschi will retire once his contract ends after the season, but if he can be convinced to play another season or two, he'll be able to attract decent attention as a leader with valuable playoff experience and championships under his belt. In fifteen games during the '06 season, Bruschi logged 112 total tackles and an interception, all after coming back from a stroke. Bruschi has proven that he's not only talented and has a natural ability for the game, but also that he's one tough customer with a work heart that can't be measured. He is a unique breed of a player.

Karlos Dansby, UFA, Arizona Cardinals
Dansby may very well end up being the cream of the crop in terms of linebackers during the next free agency period. He has excellent size and is coming into his own as a top level defensive player. He will turn 26 later this season and has consecutive seasons of 80 or more tackles. He also collected three interceptions in '05 and an impressive eight sacks in '06. Being young, strong, and talented should land him a large contract, and the Cardinals could be the team locking him up very soon.

Demorrio Williams, UFA, Atlanta Falcons
Williams is slightly undersized, but he has a knack for finding the ball and making the play. His 217 combined total tackles over the past two seasons is a solid number, and he's been helpful against the passing attack at times. He is also appealing because he's still maturing at the position and is just 27 years old. Atlanta will try to retain his services, but Williams might command more money on the open market.

Boss Bailey, UFA, Detroit Lions
Bailey has strong coverage skills and works hard to make plays. Bailey is physically gifted, but he has battled injury the past two seasons and hasn't had a chance to show consistent play. Due to lost games, he's also been unable to work on developing a knack for tracking down the ball. Bailey needs to be more physical, but also find a way to stay healthy. He'll turn 28 early in the season, and will need to be on the field to garner attention on the free agent market.

Danny Clark UFA Houston Texans
He's played for three teams in three seasons, and he's making a decent impact in Houston this year. Clark totaled 113 tackles in 2005 with Oakland and then went to New Orleans, where he played sparingly. In ten games this season, he has 42 total tackles and an interception to his credit. Clark isn't an elite player, but he can be an asset in a depth role or alongside top-quality linebackers. He may have found a home in Houston, depending on how his season finishes out.

Kawika Mitchell UFA New York Giants
Mitchell tallied seasons of 105 tackles and 104 tackles in Kansas City prior to this season. Mitchell is now playing for a Giants team that has some decent depth at linebacker and has improved their defensive play over the course of the season, so he hasn't been asked to post similar totals. However, he's still been able to make 42 total tackles, force a fumble, and record a sack. Mitchell may not be the biggest prize as a free agent, but he will be a solid addition for any team that needs linebacker help.

Mark Simoneau UFA New Orleans Saints
Simoneau hasn't overly impressed with his play in recent seasons, but he was a crucial part of the Saints success last season. His effort and ability to make timely plays paid big dividends early in the season and helped the team get off to a strong start. He has 47 tackles this season, and he's a veteran who knows how to play the game. He's a liability in coverage at times, and doesn't strike fear into opponents, but he's a decent player that will find a place to play if the Saints don't work to extend his contract.

Other Free Agent Linebackers
Jordan Beck RFA Atlanta Falcons
Kevin Bentley UFA Seattle Seahawks
Darryl Blackstock RFA Arizona Cardinals
Brandon Chillar UFA St. Louis Rams
Na'il Diggs UFA Carolina Panthers
Landon Johnson UFA Cincinnati Bengals
Teddy Lehman UFA Detroit Lions
Lemar Marshall UFA Washington Redskins
Sam Williams UFA Oakland Raiders

Asante Samuel, UFA, New England Patriots
Samuel is quickly becoming known as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, having posted a league-best ten interceptions last season. His interception total was impressive, but so was his ability to stick to receivers on a regular basis. In the first six games of the current season, he has three picks, and has kept up his strong play, continuing to shutdown receivers and helping the Patriots to an undefeated record to this point. If Samuel is not signed to an extension, he'll command big dollars on the market, especially if he keeps the pace up.

Mike Doss, UFA, Minnesota Vikings
The former Colts safety has a new home this season, and if he can avoid injury, he could see a long-term deal from Minnesota. Doss recorded a pair of interceptions in just six games last season, and has two picks each of the past three seasons. He has the ability to make an impact in slowing the opposition's rushing attack, and has plenty of playoff experience under his belt. Doss is developing into a leader and is a defensive weapon that many teams wouldn't mind having.

Domonique Foxworth, RFA, Denver Broncos
The Broncos added Dre' Bly during the off season, so Foxworth will still be used mainly as a nickel defender. Foxworth is fast, but doesn't always make the best play on the ball. He's just 24, so experience and playing time should help his development. If another team thinks he can be a top two cornerback, he may seek to leave Denver to take on that bigger role. His RFA status will make it difficult to pull him away from the Broncos, but the cornerback position is one of great significance in the modern NFL, so there's a chance.

Drayton Florence, UFA, San Diego Chargers
Florence has held onto his starting spot over Antonio Cromartie when it was thought that Cromartie would win the job early. However, the veteran showed his resolve and stepped up his play since having his position challenged. Florence is not a shutdown type of player, but he does make plays when he needs to most of the time and he had three interceptions in 2006. The Chargers can probably afford to let him hit the market, and the best bet is that Florence will find a starting position somewhere else come next season.

Randall Gay UFA New England Patriots
Gay is just 25, and while he benefits from playing for a solid Patriots team, he is still a decent player in his own right. He's been able to step up even more this season and post solid numbers, while also showing more consistency. He has registered 25 total tackles through the team's first ten games, to go along with three interceptions. The Patriots and Gay will look to keep him in New England, but a few teams could jump in and try to lure him away, including the New York Jets, who were interested in Gay last offseason.

Marcus Trufant, UFA, Seattle Seahawks
Trufant's contract has voided based on playing time and given the team's commitment to other players at his position, it appears that the cornerback will be looking for a starting position elsewhere. His 2004 season was easily his best, when he compiled 96 total tackles, five interceptions, and a sack. He was unable to match that type of production until this season, in which he has 58 total tackles and four picks through eleven games. He will be one of the top defensive targets on the market.

Ken Hamlin, UFA, Dallas Cowboys
The Arkansas product has 43 total tackles and four interceptions in eleven games, and has helped Dallas to one of the league's best records. If he can add another interception before the end of the season, he'll have a new career high and will help his value on the market. Hamlin is still young at 26, and should have several seasons ahead of him, so there will be teams interested in using him at the safety spot.

Other Free Agent Cornerback
Chris Carr RFA Oakland Raiders
Tory James UFA New England Patriots
Karl Paymah RFA Denver Broncos
B.J. Sams UFA Baltimore Ravens
Chad Scott UFA New England Patriots
Other Free Agent Safety
William Bartee UFA Kansas City Chiefs
Jay Bellamy UFA New Orleans Saints
Omar Stoutmire UFA Washington Redskins
Derrick Strait UFA Carolina Panthers
Gibril Wilson UFA New York Giants

Rob Bironas, RFA, Tennessee Titans
Over the course of the past two seasons with the Titans, Bironas has kicked five game-winning field goals, which accounts for nearly half of the team's twelve wins over that span. He has a strong leg and has converted a 60-yard field goal for a win-- the longest field goal in franchise history. Bironas will be a RFA, reducing the likelihood that he leaves the Titans at cost to another team. There are definitely some teams that wouldn't mind acquiring the 29-year old.

Josh Brown UFA Seattle Seahawks
Brown was in the same position last season, and the Seahawks signed him for another season because of how reliable he has tended to be. So far this season is no different. He's been successful on 20 of 23 field goal attempts, and his three misses have all been from a distance of more than 40 yards. He has also converted all 23 of his extra point attempts. The safest bet is that Seattle will sign him to another contract at season's end.

Other Free Agent Kickers
Dave Rayner UFA Green Bay Packers
Lawrence Tynes UFA New York Giants
Other Free Agent Punters
Jeff Feagles UFA New York Giants
Scott Player UFA Arizona Cardinals
Todd Sauerbrun UFA Denver Broncos

The Phinsider More On Beck

I took this from Dave Hyde. Pretty good.

Beck's inactivity a real head-scratcher
Dave Hyde | Sports Columnist
November 8, 2007
DAVIE

This isn't about why John Beck should start. It's about why the Dolphins' rookie isn't considered ready. And it begins with a meeting several years ago at one of those Super Bowl-week gatherings that have the full feel of royalty.

Don Shula and Bill Walsh, then retired, sat together in some corporate schmooze. They were asked about how they won, how they thought and, at one point, how they helped rookies Dan Marino and Joe Montana, respectively, claim greatness.

Each deferred to their quarterback's natural talent and individual intelligence. Then came the coaching morsels to chew on this Dolphins season.

"We had Dan call every play in training camp that year," Shula said. "That was to accelerate his learning in the system and get him comfortable with what he was doing. It put some pressure on him to perform each day, too."

"Our philosophy was to have Joe play in every game as a rookie," Walsh said. "Not start. But play a little. We wanted him in every game for a series or maybe two.

"He didn't pass that much [23 times]. But he got to prepare each week, play a little and get a taste of what it was like to play at that speed with the first unit. It was something to build on."

The point is: Where was the plan to develop Beck, other than to put him two seats behind Trent Green? And have him watch this team contend for the playoffs, as this new regime expected?

Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said Wednesday Beck practiced an extra 30 minutes with the young players some days in camp. That's nice. But it's hardly a Plan B in case Green looks awful, then gets hurt, and this season sinks like the Edmund Fitzgerald.

If Beck isn't ready to start Sunday, if he can't yet read defenses well enough as one veteran said, look at his brief time here. Look what he's been asked to do. He played the preseason with scrubs. He spent the first five weeks working with just the scout team.

When Green was hurt against Houston, a couple of weeks passed before a third quarterback was signed to free Beck to work more with the first team behind starter Cleo Lemon. Even last week, when the bye week could have been used to help, the team practiced once. Just once.

Maybe it wouldn't matter. Certainly a rookie quarterback is in over his helmet. And probably it's not fair to compare what Cameron did in his first season to Hall of Famers like Shula and Walsh.

So compare him to Buffalo coach Dick Jauron and his rookie quarterback, third-rounder Trent Edwards.

"We gave Trent extra reps [in training camp]," Jauron said Wednesday. "It wasn't one of those situations where he didn't get much opportunity."

Edwards started two games in relief of J.P. Losman. He hasn't exactly shined. He completed 67 percent of his passes, but also thrown one touchdown against five interceptions. The Bills went 1-1 those games, meaning he at least propped up the season until he was hurt and J.P. Losman returned.

"A little bit," Jauron said when asked if they scaled back the offense for Edwards. "You'd do that for most rookies."

In the end, it won't matter that Beck doesn't start this week. It won't mean anything if Beck plays the remaining eight games or just the final five. As much as fans want to sniff some hope or kick tomorrow's tires, you won't know if he's tilted for greatness or the NFL gutter by this season.

But that doesn't hide this latest blunder in a season marked by them. The fact Beck isn't considered ready is confounding considering the stars are aligned for him this week.

Look: At 0-8, the team is planning for 2008 as the Chris Chambers trade showed. Three starts by Lemon haven't moved the needle. They have mediocre Buffalo at home. And the bye week gave Beck extra time (if not much practice).

Instead, Beck not being ready looks like reason No. 457 why this season has been mismanaged, right from the start, when the inside idea was this roster could contend for a playoff spot. That made Green the priority. It turned Beck into afterthought. Cameron looks wrong on both counts.

Here's an idea: Why not pull a Walsh with Beck in these games he doesn't start? Why not script a series for him to run? Why not help the hope of tomorrow get ready by getting him on the field?

At 0-8, what's to lose?

The Phinsider Ted Ginn, Get In!

I just read that Jamal Anderson and Gaines Adams have signed with the Falcons and Bucs. There is no reason why Ginn should not be in camp unless HE holds out. He has 2-3 real days to get it done. Camp opens this weekend and if he's not there he will be hurting himself and the team. He's already missing the rookie camp. I know these things can get complicated but really there's no excuse now.

The Phinsider Wilkinson Terminated

Big Daddy Dan Wilkinson's contract was terminated today. He never reported to any of our mini-camps after the trade with the Denver Broncos fell through, because he never showed up for his physical. Looks like Evans and Big Paul may get more reps. I think we all knew he wasn't going to report to any of the camps and probably was going to retire anyway.

The Phinsider Let's Debate

Since this is one of the slowest times to be a Dolphin fan I thought I'd bring up some questions so we can discuss them.

  1. What should be our hopes for Matt Roth be this year?
  2. If we keep Ricky on the roster and he comes back in September, what should we do with him?
  3. Predictions for Ronnie Brown this year.
  4. Daunte. Hold or release him?
  5. How good could this receiving core be? Chambers, Booker, Hagan, & Ginn?
  6. Will Vernon Carey make a good to great LT in this league?
  7. How do you feel about John Beck so far?
  8. Will Roddy Wright be the biggest steal of the 2006 draft?
  9. Can the '07 Dolphins make some noise this year in a tough AFC?
  10. What do you feel is the weakest part of the team? (OR) What part of our team needs the most help?

FHP: QB Culpepper injures hand in two-vehicle crash in Coral Springs

By Macollvie Jean-François
Sun-Sentinel.com
Posted June 14 2007, 12:10 PM EDT

CORAL SPRINGS -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper injured his hand last night in a two-vehicle crash, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman said on Thursday.

The collision occurred about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Sawgrass Expressway at Mile Marker 18, said FHP Lt. Mike Brown. Culpepper was westbound in a Chevrolet Caprice when he collided with an unidentified driver in a Chevy Avalanche. Both vehicles rolled off the roadway.

LocalLinks

When paramedics arrived, Culpepper complained of a hand injury, Brown said.

Paramedics took one of the injured to Coral Springs Medical Center, but Brown could not immediately say whether the patient was the quarterback or the other driver. Brown also could not say which hand Culpepper injured.

Details of the crash were to be released later Thursday, he said.

The crash comes the day after the NFL Players' Association filed a grievance against the Dolphins on behalf of Culpepper, claiming the team is denying him the opportunity to compete for a job.

The beleaguered Culpepper, who said he was given clearance to practice after two knee surgeries, may be in talks with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Macollvie Jean-François may be reached at mjfrancois@sun-sentinel.com or 954-356-4694.
