And no, he didn't die. (Sorry, couldn't resist.) That team in California has signed him and sent him to extended Spring Training, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Sad news about Pascual Perez

Long time fans may remember Pascual Perez coming up with the Pirates in the early 1980's. Sadly, he was recently murdered in his home.

My memory is that when Perez came up he teased us by flirting with no-hitters at least a couple times. For a while I thought it was just a matter of time until he'd take one all the way through 9 innings, but he never did. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to keep up a consistently high (or even average) performance and the Bucs traded him to the Braves. The story goes that he missed his one of his first starts with them due to getting lost on Atlanta's highways. I didn't really keep up with him after he was traded, but it seems he became a journeyman, ending his career with the Yankees.

Nonetheless, I have fond memories of his early career. RIP Pascual.

Cutch is Gold!

While I know defense is difficult to measure, in my opinion this is another example of MLB's long tradition of giving defensive awards to players based on their bat and overall fame and reputation. That said, I think Cutch has the potential to improve his defense to the point where this award is deserved and hope he will do so.
