It’s official. The Patriots’ 2007 draft is a complete wash. There isn’t one player left from that class. You can point to trades, but the fact remains the Patriots drafted nine players and they whiffed on all of them. The Patriots currently have on the active roster just three (Stephen Gostkowski, Jerod Mayo, and Matthew Slater) of the 26 players they drafted from 2006-08. Most teams would be crippled by that deficiency, but the Patriots just keep chugging along. Anyone else see a Scott Pioli connection here? I was a bit worried when Pioli left, wondering how Bill would do without his right-hand man through the Super Bowl years. Now I’m wondering if this isn’t the reason Belichick didn’t fight for Pioli to get his contract renewed and stay.

Chargers waived NT Ogemdi Nwagbuo.Nwagbuo has been a regular contributor in San Diego over the past two seasons, but his performance was a different story. Still, he can play nose tackle and end in the 3-4. It wouldn't be surprising if he attracted some interest.

If Bates, a creative, hard working and young coach, does eventually succeed with another team, he will be but the latest in a long line of coaches that didn't break through right away but kept working, working, working, competing and believing in themselves. I wish him the best. I loved what he did in Seattle, loved the range of his play calling, how he seemed to marry the creativity of Knapp with the execution of Holmgren, the way his play calling was daring, and how passionate and committed he seemed. But I also recognize how little I actually know about him. His public support of Hasselbeck didn't encourage me. The way he insisted that Hasselbeck could run his system, though it was obvious he couldn't, and how long it took Bates to adjust, worried me. Sometimes his play calling ranged towards the indefensible: pounding the rock with Lynch, fades to Butler, rolling out Hasselbeck in his own end zone, etc. Overall though, I thought he was promising, and I thought his potential was immense, and I am very sad to see him go.

Coach Todd Haley indicated Wednesday that the Chiefs' carry distribution will be matchup-based moving forward. "This is a fluid game with a lot of variables," he said. "We saw some weather in the first game and different situations in the second. You must be able to adjust in the way that you see fit." Haley may have decided to feature Thomas Jones in Week 2 based on the Browns' weaknesses up the gut. If the logic holds, Jamaal Charles would likely be featured against San Francisco's stout interior. The 49ers' defense figures to be more vulnerable on the perimeter. Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports the Cleveland Browns have traded OLB Kamerion Wimbley to the Oakland Raiders for undisclosed draft compensation, a league source told Scout.com. Wimbley's career with the Browns started off very well after he was selected in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He posted 11 sacks as a rookie, but only totaled 16.5 over the next three seasons. Wimbley started and played in 63 out of 64 regular season games for the Browns. The only game he missed was in 2009 because of flu-like symptoms.

General manager Howie Roseman acknowledged earlier this week that several teams already have called about the availability of their three quarterbacks - McNabb, Vick and Kevin Kolb. He said he expects even more calls in the weeks leading up to the draft, which is a clear indication that the Eagles are willing to listen to offers.
