Al Stalock to miss majority of season recovering from injury

Fear the Fin looks into the recent news that prospect Al Stalock will miss the majority of next season.

Sharks have bonus overage of $545K

More gold from David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News this afternoon. According to the Sharks beat writer, the team paid bonuses totaling approximately $545,000 to Logan Couture and Jamie McGinn last season. Because of this, coupled with the fact that San Jose was right at the cap, that money will count against the team this season. This means that Doug Wilson will have a cap of $63.75MM to work with for the upcoming year. That overage is far less than it could have been, but it looks like the "Disappearing Huskins" magic trick pulled by Doug Wilson at the end of last season kept the team compliant. For all the want-to-be GM's out there, here are some numbers to work with. Cap Space under Current Roster Situation (12 F, 8D (Including Moore and Braun) 2G): $4.4675MM Cap Space with 7D (Including Braun): $4.98MM Cap Space with no Scratches: $5.84MM The Sharks may be done this offseason, but they have more space to make a move going into the year than they have in any of the previous since the lockout.

Sharks extend defenseman Brent Burns for five years

In what can be considered both great and surprising news, the San Jose Sharks announced this morning that they have signed recently acquired all-star defenseman Brent Burns to a five-year contract extension. With what the Sharks gave up to get Burns (Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and a first round pick), it was important to get Burns locked up long-term. According to David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News, the cap hit on the deal comes to $5.75MM annually. Considering what Burns could have gotten in the insane UFA market, this deal can be considered another steal for Doug Wilson.

Benn Ferriero inks one-year deal with San Jose

Benn Ferriero has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Sharks worth $605,000 at the NHL level, according to This is a very good value for Ferriero, especially since he will still be a restricted free agent when the contract expires. With Ferriero on the roster, carrying no scratches, the Sharks have almost $7MM left against the salary cap. (Officially, the number is $6,974,999)
