Defensive Zone Exits - Raw data vs. Pittsburgh 3/15

So in our discussion of evaluating defensemen, it came up that perhaps some methods of tracking zone exits (clearing the defensive zone) would be critical in evaluating a defenseman's...

Another comparative look at NHL salaries

Let me start by saying I love Giroux, both as a player and as a leader of the team. I agree he is one of the elite players in the league, and should definitely be compensated as such. I still...

The value of first-round draft picks

As part of the RFA thievery to get Shea Weber, the Predators would acquire four first-round draft picks from the Flyers in compensation. Many people have argued that first round picks are...

Matt Carle best UFA defenseman

2

"Matt Carle is the top offensive player available and is a solid defensive player as well and is quite likely the best defenseman available, though everyone believes he will re-sign in Philadelphia and may already have a deal agreed upon but can’t sign it until July 1st due to salary cap issues." And stats to back it up too ...

Regarding the trade bringing Zybnek Michalek back to Phoenix from Pittsburgh - "Phoenix general manager Don Maloney said. "We know what he is, so we were thrilled. ... We looked at ‘Z' playing with a young player like Oliver Ekman-Larsson as a terrific combo to matchup against the best players in the West."

A (vain?) run at goalie consistency

So, I'm an engineer, not a statistician - there are some pretty obvious statistical whoopsies in my analysis (averaging averages, for instance, is a no-no). But in the search for SOME basis of...

PLAYING WITH CAPGEEK ROSTERS

Warning - this is entirely Capgeek roster territory. Basically, I was bored and started wondering how good of a team I could assemble if I simply cut players from the current roster (that is,...

Zac Rinaldo - BSC or the next Steve Downie?

Many commentors have weighed in on Zac Rinaldo here over the course of the last two years or so.  Enough have agreed on his seeming attitude that he has acquired a somewhat unsavory nickname -...

Short interview with Mr. Grilled Cheese

THN in their short player profile section hit up Claude Giroux for some answers. A Camaro???

Ken Campbell of THN is a moron.

+

Oh no! One bad game, and those evil people in Philly are ready to start a witch-hunt for any Russian goalies! Good thing there's no games against the NYI soon ... (Campbell also restates for the 10,000th time why he's a complete pussy.)

Trading a center for a goalie

OK.  So we want to make cap space to sign a goalie, right?  (And I freely admit, I am doing this as an academic exercise, since I think the internal options are just fine at goalie.) Geoff posits...

Bob to start game 4

CBS Sports (not the most relaible source) reports that Bobrovsky is your starter for Game 4.

I apologize if this was in the links elsewhere; just saw it and had to make sure others did.

Bob in net tonight

Fran Seravalli reports that Bobrovsky gets the start in net tonight vs the Caps.

Gustafsson to play; Boucher in goal tonight

Reports are that Boucher is in goal against Florida, and that Gustafsson won't be making the trip for nothing - he may see time against Atlanta and/or Dallas.

Fran Seravalli reports Flyers interested in Foote

Now that Bartulis and Walker are probably done for the season, I guess Holmgren is looking for someone to be #7 (#6?) for the defense.

THN and a positive article on Flyers Goalie Bob

+

Of course, they call him 'SpongeBob', which I haven't heard anyone in Philly do - but they acknowledge the two goalies and Reese, as well as the scouts.

--The locker stall RW Ian Laperriere used last season is still adorned with his nameplate and hockey equipment, even though it's clear the 37-year-old veteran will not return this season from post-concussion symptoms. Laperriere's stall separates defenseman Sean O'Donnell and forward Andreas Nodl. "He's still part of the team," Flyers teammate Danny Briere said. "The way he played for us, the way he sacrificed his body every single game, the way he sacrificed his life coming back in the playoffs last year. I think it's well-deserved to be there, and there's nobody who would say that it doesn't belong there. It's a reminder every day of the sacrifice it takes and the value of leaving it all on the ice."

Utter crapola

"Inside Shots" section describes the incident between Gaborik and Carcillo in the second line - with a little rewriting of history. I don't seem to remember Carcillo 'jumping' Gaborik at all! I do remember Gaborik dropping his gloves with Carbomb, Danny looking at him for a second in disbelief, and then Gaborik getting his face rearranged by repeatedly smashing it into Carcillo's fist. What a load of revisionist crap.
