Dan Haren Fans Fourteen Mariners In CG Shutout, Angels win 3-0
Dan Haren's back felt better, apparently, because tonight it looked like Dan Haren's back...in 2011 form, that is. Or perhaps that is premature. But he needed a victory like this, to say the least. Oh, and that Albert Pujols fellow squared up a few balls nicely, hit one out of the park. You know, just a great game to watch, basically. Ho hum.
I'm sorry, what I meant to say was:
Mike Trout Wheels, Ervin Santana Deals: Angels Shutout A's 4-0
"Oh, such a perfect day. You just keep me hanging on."-Lou Reed
Today the Angels continued to play their role as our crazy, codependent ex-girlfriend/boyfriend. In true 2012(some would even say 2011) fashion, they give us just enough of a pitching gem or monster offensive performance to make us crawl back for more, ignoring the lessons to be learned from the past, and setting us up for the sting of future failure. They are savvy enough to know that one surefire way to make the fans forget about a demoralizing loss the night before, is to dish out some shutout baseball of their own the next day. That is exactly what they did, so we might as well enjoy the Angels while they're being nice to us and buying us flowers. Who knows how long it'll be til they forget our birthdays and only come around when they need to "borrow" money.
Angels Occupy Win Column Behind Jerome Williams, Torii Hunter May Day Mayhem
"Well some people sing, it sounds like they're screaming. Used to doubt it, but now I believe it."-Arcade Fire, "Month of May".
Jerome Williams came to work on May Day, taking the opportunity and promise of a new month to deal a gem against the Twins. Backed by the ferocious Torii Hunter, Williams got a complete game shutout and staked further claim to his role as fifth starter of this 2012 Angels squad. If there were any doubts in my mind, Jerome did a fairly good job at crushing them tonight. But the team, for seemingly the first time this season, has a few things to believe in at the moment. Things like winning a series, Mike Trout's speed and spark, Torii Hunter's offensive awakening and an excellent pitching performance that gave the thin home crowd something to rage about.
Jered Weaver Milestone Night, Kendrys Morales Puts Balls In Flight; Angels Crush A's 6-0
After a tough road trip and string of day games, the Angels returned to Anaheim and it's cool, breezy, night air looking to bounce back and quell any bad vibes lurking in our heads, while also taking on division rival Oakland. The plane ride home did something good to this team, making them look much more like the 2009 squad as opposed to the 2011-esque team we saw play over the weekend.
Jered Weaver Back In Action, Mark Trumbo Gaining Traction, Loek Van Mil Gets No Satisfaction
"Hey, I know that dude."-Jeff Spicoli, Fast Times At Ridgemont High
That was also what I said when Jered Weaver took the mound today. Our own Spicoli-like stud, looking buff, bronze and bitchen per usual, made his first appearance of the Spring, and seemed to look like the Weaver we know and love. So that's good. Two innings pitched, 34 pitches, 3 hits...the usual Spring Training fare. The important thing was we got to see Our Guy for the first time since last September, which is exciting enough by itself.
No Albert Pujols in the lineup today, but Mark Trumbo did start at 3B. We didn't get to see him do anything though, including ABs, but I'm sure getting to see him take some reps at a tricky new position was just a big, blonde cherry on a Weaver sundae for most Angels fans listening/watching at home or in The House of the Devil(Diablo Stadium).
7'1 Loek(pronounced "Luke", although I think it's cooler pronouncing it in the same fashion as Tone Loc) Van Mil got the loss today, and more than anybody had the worst case of HeadingBackToSLC-itis. It's spring training, though, and while hit fests like the last two outings get us pumped, a loss to the Mariners squad can still hold enough palpable excitement to leave us not really caring, and just wanting more.
OC Weekly to Arte Moreno: "Stop being so pinche wary of the issue, cabrón"
OC Weekly editor Gustavo Arellano expands on ideas he recently presented in an ESPN article by Mark Saxon, in which the subject was Arte Moreno, his Mexican heritage and supposed reluctance to embrace the Angels' Latino fanbase.
While Saxon's article focused on the fact that the Latino fanbase HAS grown 25% under Moreno's ownership (mostly likely due to the team's success in that time...winning is the universal laguage, it turns out), Arellano's addendum on the OC Weekly website is tinged with The Mexican's standard, Chicano gadfly tone.
"You're committed to producing a winner, and that's what ultimately people care about, as well they should. But even Morrissey eventually broke down and acknowledged his Latino fan base", says Arellano. Now, I'm a huge fan of Arellano's body of work, and our very own Matt Welch(a former colleague) once commented that Gus is "a mensch and huge Angels fan," so his words should not be taken as venomous. That being said, are his remarks necessarily fair? Does Moreno need to do more to build the Latino fanbase, outside of putting together a winning team and enjoyable stadium atmosphere? I think owners that want to take a more public approach towards politics and social issues are commendable, but I'm also quite fine with Arte the way he is: quiet, reserved, focused on winning and making a fan out of EVERYBODY.

Dirty, recently used plate that probably had lasagna on it? Check.
Disinterested facial expression? Check.
I took this after tonights loss, sorry for the low quality. (The fridge was actually WAY more stocked full of beer than it appears in this photo. I just wasn't quick enough)

Jered Weaver Back In Rarefied Air; Angels Ace Annihilates Yankees
Spectacle. Pageantry. Theatrics. Bandwagon fans. Yankee-biased strike zone squeezing.
This game had all the trimmings of a usual visit by the Bronx Bores, but there was a distinct frisson surging throughout the southland tonight to welcome the American League's best team(at least as far as records go). The reason, of course, is that the Angels, unlike the Yankees, are in a divisional race with the Texas Rangers, who won handily over Oakland earlier in the evening. That makes this game, and weekend series, must win contests. The good news is that while the Yankees have a very formidable lineup, tonight they had to not only play in a REAL major league ballpark, but they had to face arguably the best pitcher in all of baseball. Yes, Jered Weaver was on the mound, and you can go ahead and forget about his last few starts; this guy was ON tonight.
UPDATE: Mindblowing Derek Jeter photo, after the jump.
From Deadspin: Torii Hunter Gets Trapped In An Oxygen Chamber, Needs To Use The Restroom, Tweets About It.
Torii is a shining example of the indomitable human spirit.
Does anybody know if Jeff Mathis uses this oxygen chamber? If not, is there a way to possibly convince him to, preferably right before game time?
From Mike DiGiovanna's Twitter:
#Angels MGR Mike Scioscia will serve one-game suspension tonight against Twins. Rob Picciolo is expected to run the club. Also: Jered Weaver gets 6 game suspension, as expected. Weaver will appeal.

Afternoon Pitching Duel Delivers As Advertised: Angels Ride Rangers Error To Victory, Series Win
A deep, collective sigh of relief from Angels fans was almost audible throughout southern California and the globe today, as Endy Chavez hit a 5-3 ground out in the 9th, giving the Angels not only the win, but also the crucial series victory against the AL West leading Texas Rangers. Fitting that Endy Chavez ended the game for the team, because it was his error off of a Mike Trout liner in the 2nd that would lead to the only run scored today, in a classic nail-biting pitching duel between all-stars Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson.
Torii Hunter Drives In Five, Mike Trout Finds First MLB Hit In Angels Dismantling Of Mariners
The Angels, on the back of an impressive offensive performance from fan favorite Torii Hunter, won their eighth series in a row tonight, defeating the Seattle Mariners and rookie sensation Michael Pineda. Hunter, the lovable veteran, had five RBIs off of his two homeruns, and the Angels lineup followed suit by pouring on an batting deluge of their own, with the exclamation point being an 8th inning Trumbomb by none other than Mark Trumbo. That homerun, by the way, makes Mark Trumbo tied for the lead in homeruns by MLB rookies this year(*16, Danny Espinosa, Nationals). Joel Pineiro gets the win in a decent outing, with 7 innings pitched and 7 strikeouts to one walk.

DVR'd sports spoiler etiquette: What side are you on?
Gawker had this "manifesto" of sorts up recently, regarding the spoiler-ish world we now live in and how to act accordingly(in the author's eyes, at least). This is something I've been battling with all season, but not for a tv show or movie, as discussed in the article, but sports...specifically Angels baseball. I have a couple friends who ALWAYS record the game, regardless if they're really busy or not. I, on the other hand, never record games. Or sports, in general. Sports should be watched live, in my opinion, and if I can't see a game live, I just watch highlights or read a recap. So this season alone has yielded a few arguments between us, usually because I mention a game a few hours after it's over, only to have my buddy go aggro because he hasn't taken the time to watch it yet. So, do you DVR sports/Angels? Does this happen to you, having friends either spoiler stuff for you or you inadvertently become the spoiler, and get chided for it? What is your stance on the spoiler-free sports nuts?
Bloops, Doinks and Dinks for Dodgers Cool Down Hot Halos
Tyler Chatwood could not replicate his great start from last weekend, when he faced the Dodgers on their home turf. The young hurler didn't necessarily look bad, per se, but it was a deluge of chintzy hits that got Dodger baserunners on base, as well as got them across home plate. From the very first at bat for the Brooklyn Bums, a double by Tony Gwynn Jr., till the very last inning, they had no trouble at all getting one or two men on each side. They had early help via a questionable strike zone that propped up Hiroki Kuroda, while hosing Tyler Chatwood, but those types of gripes can only last so long, as it was after the 5th and 6th innings that the Halos Faithful felt a clampdown on Angels offense all too familiar this season. Again, Chatwood had his problems, but the offense has to score.
Mid-Season Music Mojo Cleansing Cathartic Kendry(s) Who? BouJoo? Special: This is some My Morning Jacket from their last album, Circuital...it's a good little summer jam; one with a mantra we could all use. The track is "Outta My System", and that's what the Halos are doing. And that's what we should do with the worst parts of the first half.
Angels And Tyler Chatwood Charge Into Chavez, Triumphantly Torch Trolley Dodgers
When Tyler Chatwood is "on", he is ON...like Donkey Kong. Or perhaps a prawn that yawns at dawn. All jokes aside, today was one of those days. The youngster, while admittedly facing a not-so-great Dodger lineup, proved his mettle by not only looking good pitch-wise, but by getting out of a couple self-induced jams, showing the sort of grit that you appreciate in a starter, regardless of age. Some would say that this is nothing out of the ordinary for this 2011 Angels club, but one thing that was different in this outing was the fact that he had that elusive Run Support behind him.

Evil Lady Rangers fan steals foul ball from little girl, celebrates ecstatically.(okay, so I don't know if this lady is a Rangers fan, but this DID take place at Arlington, during a Rangers/Cardinals game. But c'mon...the writing's on the wall)
Angels Hitters Smack Around John Danks as Joel Pineiro Applies Figure Four Leg Lock In 6-2 Win Over Chicago
The Angels came out roaring in this one, delighting fans with a barrage of early hits, making the score 3-0 after just the first inning. The Halos were obviously out for blood after being embarrassed the night before...it also didn't hurt that they were going against John Danks, who never seemed to get settled on the mound, and when he did the Angels would just send another contact single right up the middle. The game never seemed to be in the White Sox grasp, which is exactly what one should expect on Lucha Libre Mask Night. Yes...there was an Angels victory this evening. But let's stay focused here, people: THERE WAS A GUINESS WORLD RECORD SET THIS EVENING.

Angels Battle Dealing Josh Beckett and Dastardly Officiating,Come Up Short In Extra Innings
For some baseball fans, the baseball season is officially upon us at the arrival of spring training and the annual trip to the desert. For others, it's the opening day hoopla and first pitch pageantry. Some fans are more visceral, like the smell of freshly cut grass or the sound of a leather glove popping during a backyard game of catch.
For me, the season hasn't officially started until the Angels play their first horribly officiated game against the Red Sox. Ahhhh... I love baseball season!
This was a tough one, but at least it was an exciting one, I suppose(or to some, ulcer inducing).
