Fire Down Below: Hawks Sign Segal

A quick look at the Hawks signing of Brandon Segal (no relation).

Salary Cap to increase to $64 Million

It's now official. The cap is going up even more than the high end estimates we had heard, which is obviously good news for the Hawks, as well as some other cap-humping competitors. The real interesting caveat is that the floor is now $48 million, which means some thrifty teams (paging Uncle Dale) will likely have to toss around some real bad paper in order to reach it. Have fun at CapGeek everyone.

Second City Hockey's Puck Daddy Canucks Eulogy

From the bottoms of our hearts, thank you for keeping the Cup away from those awful Canuck dickbags (the team and the rioters, not the good folks at Nucks Misconduct), sparing the Hawks from having to be etched in eternity next to them. It was well earned, and congratulations.

Derek Boogaard Found Dead

A bit of shocking news this evening, as Michael Russo is reporting that noted pugilist Derek Boogaard has been found dead in his Minneapolis apartment by his family today. He was 28. No word yet on a cause, but out of respect, let's reserve speculation just yet in the thread. By all accounts, as is usually the case, in contrast to his on-ice tough guy role, Boogaard was an absolute prince off the ice. Our thoughts go out to his immediate, Ranger, and Wild families.

Brouwer Undergoes Shoulder Surgery

This one seems fairly obvious after the face-plant Brouw took in the Montreal game, but multiple outlets are confirming that Troy Brouwer has undergone successful surgery on his right shoulder to repair what's being called a "labral tear", though his recovery timetable hasn't been stated yet.

Our report card for Niklas Hjalmarsson, a curious case in regression.

Chris Campoli Has Knee Surgery

It's not surprising that in the post-mortem of the 2011 Blackhawks season that there would be injuries that were long-hidden finally tended to. What is surprising is that the first of which is Chris Campoli, who underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, an injury those who have suffered through it can vouch for being pretty damn uncomfortable. It's a relatively minor procedure, and Campoli should be able to recuperate enough in time for regular pre-season work outs, but one might speculate that this would lower his RFA return cost ever so slightly, and every ruble still counts. While it doesn't excuse his death knell turnover in Game 7's OT, he can certainly be commended for playing through it at a (mostly) competent level.
