Over the Monster Hey, Drugs, good news!

David Pauley DFA'd

To make room for the recently-signed John Smoltz on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox have designated righthander David Pauley for assignment. Boston now has ten days to trade, release, or outright Pauley to Triple-A (if he clears waivers and is willing to agree to a minor league deal). Pauley, 25, appeared in six games for Boston in 2008, going 0-1 with a 11.68 ERA, 11 strikeouts, and 5 walks in 12.1 innings. Despite failing to impress with the big league club last season, Pauley continued his dominance of Triple-A opponents in 2008, going 14-4 with a 3.55 ERA, 103 strikeouts, and 41 walks over 147 innings in 25 starts for Pawtucket.

Pauley sucks. He does, really. He has no future with this franchise, or likely any other.

CelticsBlog Memphis signs Darius Miles

Hey guys, to give some relief for the C's losing streak, read this:

http://bloguin.com/3shadesofblue/20090110226/memphis-grizzlies/january-2009/portland-we-call-your-bluff.html

Grizzlies signed Miles to a 10-day contract. How this affect the Celtics? It doesn't, but this was pretty good for the NBA. Portland can't pull the crap they pulled and get away with it. That e-mail they sent threading the NBA team was borderline criminal. Miles is not a very good basketball player, but that doesn't mean he can't play basketball because of some fucking morons who gave him a huge contract. It backfired mightly, and I think we won't be seeing any of this crap in the future. Hopefully.

Thoughts?

Over the Monster Jacqueline Peavy?

MLBTR says so.

The Red Sox have "some" interest in Peavy, but as of a few days ago the teams had not entertained any substantive trade talks as Padres GM Kevin Towers knew that Boston was not on Peavy's wish list. But now that talks with Atlanta and the Cubs have broken down, Towers needs a new team to deal with and the 27-year-old Peavy, according to his agent, Barry Axelrod, probably would OK a deal to Boston. But if there's a Mark Teixeira splash, the Red Sox might not have the money to entertain it

What could we realisticly expect to trade for Peavy? Bowden or Buch? I've seen the offers from the Cubs and Braves, and both were shit or pretty close to being shit, so maybe we don't have to give up on Buch. Maybe Bowden + Masterson + Kalish would get it done, but I just don't know. Peavy has a very nice K/BB rate, and a low career FIP. He's also a groundball pitcher of sorts. Jake would be a nice addition to any team that gets him.

Oh, and the fanpost title comes from an answer I gave to a friend of mine regarding projections. I said 'projections are worthless, because as far as we know, Jake Peavy might have sex reassignment surgery and become Jacqueline, ten time ice skater world champ'. Jake is also a bit on the girly side of the force.

Over the Monster Philadelphia Phillies - 2008 WS Champs

Who could have guessed that? The Phillies weren't a sexy pick, they were just a team at the beginning of the season. A strong team. They got stronger, and I'm not sure if the Red Sox, or any other team in the league, would have been able to beat them. Not when a 45 year old dude pitches like he did.

Congratulations to the Phillies, to Philadelphia fans and to Charlie Manuel. Tampa, good run and all, but now fuck off and die. You got a little bit cocky (both fans and players), and at the end got fucked mightly. The cowbell thing is really silly, Longoria is an asshole and so is Maddon. But kudos for a great season and all.

I miss baseball. Not that this WS meant anything without the Sox, but it was baseball. Now what?

Over the Monster Jed Lowrie - Just WOW!

Again, via Extra Bases:

Red Sox infielder Jed Lowrie played since May with a sprain and a small non-displaced fracture in his left wrist, aliments that worsened as the season wore on, general manager Theo Epstein said in an e-mail. The minor injuries were revealed Tuesday when Lowrie underwent an MRI. The wrist has already begun to heal itself, Epstein said, and should be back to full strength with three weeks of rest.

The injuries gave Lowrie occasional pain and affected his grip strength, particularly late in the season, which likely explains his difficulties batting lefthanded. As a righthanded batter, Lowrie hit .338 with a .525 slugging percentage with the Red Sox. Lefthanded, he hit .222 with a .334 slugging percentage.

Lowrie finished the season on an 8-for-51 (.157) slump, but he played in 52 of the Sox’ 53 games in August and September even as the symptoms worsened. He committed only one error in his rookie regular season, none as a shortstop.

Lowrie originally suffered the injuries while playing at Triple A Pawtucket in May.

This sounds odd. Why didn't they sit him at the end of the season? Regardless, this would indeed help to explain his bad season as a LHH. Also, the kid's pretty amazing if this is true. Any thoughts?

Over the Monster Francona to have back surgery

Via Extra Bases:

Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced today something he has known since May: He will undergo back surgery this offseason, most likely in the coming weeks. He’s going to see a doctor today to determine when he will have the operation and precisely what it will be.

This season was a physically draining one for Francona, with a trip to Japan and the Manny Ramirez saga piled on to the usual viper pit that is managing the Sox. He’s looking forward to taking care of that, starting the evaluation process, and taking in some of the World Series. Maybe. “I don’t know,” he said, cracking a thin smile. “If ‘Prison Break’ isn’t on.”

I love Tito. “If ‘Prison Break’ isn’t on” really made me laugh.

Over the Monster Sox get Byrd

Via Extra Bases:

Here's a release on the trade from the Indians:

CLEVELAND, OH—The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has completed a trade with the Boston Red Sox, sending RHP PAUL BYRD to Boston in exchange for a player to be named or cash. The player to be named must be agreed upon on or before January 15, 2009.

Byrd made 22 starts with the Indians this year going 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA (131.0IP, 146H, 70R/66ER, 24BB, 56K, 23HR).

The Indians will not make a move today to replace Byrd on their active 25-man roster. The club’s 40-man roster now stands at 39. The Indians are now undecided for the start on Thursday, August 14 vs. Baltimore.

What do you guys think?

Sox:

1. Jacoby Ellsbury LF
2. Dustin Pedroia 2B
3. J.D. Drew RF
4. Manny Ramirez DH
5. Mike Lowell 3B
6. Kevin Youkilis IB
7. Coco Crisp CF
8. Julio Lugo SS
9. Kevin Cash C

SP: Tim Wakefield

Cardinals:

1. Cesar Izturis SS
2. Skip Schumaker RF
3. Ryan Ludwick LF
4. Rick Ankiel CF
5. Troy Glaus 3B
6. Chris Duncan 1B
7. Yadier Molina DH
8. Adam Kennedy 2B
9. Jason LaRue C

SP: Kyle Lohse

The Cardinals have a pretty weak line-up without Pujols. Look up there, it's awful. Ludwick is having a nice season, Ankiel is also good, and Glaus is fair enough. The rest is bad. They have a nice record, sitting at 42-32 entering game today. However, they're playing a little bit over their heads right now, so expect that record to drop in the near future. So, it's pretty much your Red Sox vs. a non-playoff NL team. This smells good.

Sox up, 1-0 thanks to a Sac Fly by Julio RBI Lugo. Is it just me, or would the whole world hate Lugo a little bit less if his name was Lulio Jugo. :)

 Is there anybody around?

Line-ups:

Ellsbury-LF
Pedroia-2B
Drew-RF
Lowell-3B
Youkilis-1B
Crisp-CF
Lugo-SS
Cash-C
Wakefield-SP

Bruce-CF
Janish-SS
Griffey-RF
Phillips-2B
Dunn-LF
Encarnacion-3B
Votto-1B
Bako-C
Voloquez-SP

Sox up, 1-0, thanks to Taco's wonderful speed. I missed the error, so I'm wanting for a replay to see what happened. Also, glad to see that Pedroia is seeing more pitches today. He saw 3 before grounding out. And Volquez is ugly. Very fucking ugly indeed...

Stampede Blue A stupid question

How do you guys feel we'll use Mike Hart? I mean, will he split the carries with Addai, or do like KK did last season, or will be the 3rd back behind KK? Addai struggled a bit in the end of last season, so adding depth was really a big need. But will he be more than just depth? Can we run some kind of 2 RB set, or that would be flat out stupid?

Stampede Blue How much of a fanboy am I?

I just got a new tattoo on my back, with 3 quotes from 3 different songs:

"And dad would dream of all the different ways to die, each one a little more than he could dare to try"

"New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries."

"We are vain and we are blind, I hate people when they're not polite"

Am I too stupid, or somebody else around here also got a dumb tattoo like this one? And it's my seventh, all of them are idiotic like this...

Yes, YES, the off-season is a VERY long time...

Stampede Blue Giants at Cowboys

Tony Romo just threw one of the ugliest passes I ever saw.

Things are not looking good also for the Cowboys. They didn't do anything to stop the Giants on their first drive, and didn't do shit on their first drive. Giants ahead, 7-0, and with the ball. Toomer is playing great right now.

I hope that Eli play good today.

Stampede Blue Pro Bowl

Maybe I'm late, but I just checked down at nfl.com to see how the pro bowl voting is going, and Manning is third overall, behind Brady (2nd, oh yeah) and Favre (1st). Manning is ahead of Randy Moss, who is a media darling this year (or at least was). Manning is ahead of Tony Homo and Adrian Peterson.

How great is that? I mean, this season Manning isn't throwing to Marvin Harrison. He's throwing to guys like Moorehead and Crappo. But if you look at his stats, he deserves it.

Once I said that Steve Nash should be the MVP every single season he plays. Even if he's playing like crap, he should be named MVP. Because today, there ain't nobody quite like him. Manning should too. Because even with some bad WR, he's dominating.

Oh, and Adrian Peterson is ahead of Joseph Addai. And I think that's right for the season.

Stampede Blue Tony Homo

He's being good this season, but WTF IS HE THINKING? 4 INTS, being 2 of them returned for TDs. The Bills should be winning it by a lot right now, but, hey, they are the Bills...

300 characters? How the fuck am I supposed to get 300 characters out of a simple act of bashing someone? Ahm... This way, I guess...

Stampede Blue Caralho!

Goddamn, you guys over here complain a lot about the ESPN. Well, it just CAN'T BE WORSE THAN THE ESPN BRAZIL! They spent the whole first half DROOLING at New England 'greatness'. Honestly, if I hear the name "Tom Brady" again I'll kill myself. And I'm not a Brady hater, or Pats hater for that matter. I never EVER saw a team receive so many nice words in so little time, in any sports. Look, ok, the Pats are great again, fuck yeah, whatever. But these kind of thing only put people against them. At least here.

So, is the american ESPN this bad? I mean, 2 times the guy said that, while Manning has more career records, Brady has the bigger: SuperBowls. THOSE ARE TEAM RECORDS, YOU MORON. I kept yelling at the TV.

Nothing against the Pats. But in my country, the NFL coverage never has been so stupid.

Stampede Blue Power Rankings

Hey there. I've been reading this blog and the diaries for long time. There's always something nice going on, and I always get to laugh hard reading the main page. Still, reading the Power Rankings by Dr. Z back at SI, I've come to wonder about a thing: I'm brazilian, and I've been watching football only for about 5 years, and there are things I just don't get. How the hell can the Chargers get their asses kicked so hard on Monday, and be at 8th (in other Power Rankings, they're still at THIRD), while the Texans, that are 2-0, playing good and improving by each game, be listed at 11st? Even the Bears are ahead! So, I guess that this PR is based on what, potential of the team? So how can the Colts, still undefeated and defending champs, be second to the Pats? They didn't face better squads than the Colts did, and won both games just as fair as the Colts did! So what should set them apart? The potential, the simple fact of 'who's better'? A team cannot have bigger potential than the defending champs, and the Colts also improved from last season. That's a fact. So, the Pats won by a 'larger margin' than we did, but so did the Texans when compared to the Chargers.

I guess I'm too brazilian to get this kind of thing...
