"I think in the end, it probably worked against them a little bit, because everyone thought the Red Sox were my No. 1 choice. ... The Yankees had a leg up all along."

How the fuck can you talk with those balls in your mouth, man?

Hey, Drugs, good news!

David Pauley DFA'd

To make room for the recently-signed John Smoltz on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox have designated righthander David Pauley for assignment. Boston now has ten days to trade, release, or outright Pauley to Triple-A (if he clears waivers and is willing to agree to a minor league deal). Pauley, 25, appeared in six games for Boston in 2008, going 0-1 with a 11.68 ERA, 11 strikeouts, and 5 walks in 12.1 innings. Despite failing to impress with the big league club last season, Pauley continued his dominance of Triple-A opponents in 2008, going 14-4 with a 3.55 ERA, 103 strikeouts, and 41 walks over 147 innings in 25 starts for Pawtucket.

Pauley sucks. He does, really. He has no future with this franchise, or likely any other.

Memphis signs Darius Miles

Hey guys, to give some relief for the C's losing streak, read this:

http://bloguin.com/3shadesofblue/20090110226/memphis-grizzlies/january-2009/portland-we-call-your-bluff.html

Grizzlies signed Miles to a 10-day contract. How this affect the Celtics? It doesn't, but this was pretty good for the NBA. Portland can't pull the crap they pulled and get away with it. That e-mail they sent threading the NBA team was borderline criminal. Miles is not a very good basketball player, but that doesn't mean he can't play basketball because of some fucking morons who gave him a huge contract. It backfired mightly, and I think we won't be seeing any of this crap in the future. Hopefully.

Thoughts?

Jacqueline Peavy?

MLBTR says so.

The Red Sox have "some" interest in Peavy, but as of a few days ago the teams had not entertained any substantive trade talks as Padres GM Kevin Towers knew that Boston was not on Peavy's wish list. But now that talks with Atlanta and the Cubs have broken down, Towers needs a new team to deal with and the 27-year-old Peavy, according to his agent, Barry Axelrod, probably would OK a deal to Boston. But if there's a Mark Teixeira splash, the Red Sox might not have the money to entertain it

What could we realisticly expect to trade for Peavy? Bowden or Buch? I've seen the offers from the Cubs and Braves, and both were shit or pretty close to being shit, so maybe we don't have to give up on Buch. Maybe Bowden + Masterson + Kalish would get it done, but I just don't know. Peavy has a very nice K/BB rate, and a low career FIP. He's also a groundball pitcher of sorts. Jake would be a nice addition to any team that gets him.

Oh, and the fanpost title comes from an answer I gave to a friend of mine regarding projections. I said 'projections are worthless, because as far as we know, Jake Peavy might have sex reassignment surgery and become Jacqueline, ten time ice skater world champ'. Jake is also a bit on the girly side of the force.

Philadelphia Phillies - 2008 WS Champs

Who could have guessed that? The Phillies weren't a sexy pick, they were just a team at the beginning of the season. A strong team. They got stronger, and I'm not sure if the Red Sox, or any other team in the league, would have been able to beat them. Not when a 45 year old dude pitches like he did.

Congratulations to the Phillies, to Philadelphia fans and to Charlie Manuel. Tampa, good run and all, but now fuck off and die. You got a little bit cocky (both fans and players), and at the end got fucked mightly. The cowbell thing is really silly, Longoria is an asshole and so is Maddon. But kudos for a great season and all.

I miss baseball. Not that this WS meant anything without the Sox, but it was baseball. Now what?

Jed Lowrie - Just WOW!

Again, via Extra Bases:

Red Sox infielder Jed Lowrie played since May with a sprain and a small non-displaced fracture in his left wrist, aliments that worsened as the season wore on, general manager Theo Epstein said in an e-mail. The minor injuries were revealed Tuesday when Lowrie underwent an MRI. The wrist has already begun to heal itself, Epstein said, and should be back to full strength with three weeks of rest.

The injuries gave Lowrie occasional pain and affected his grip strength, particularly late in the season, which likely explains his difficulties batting lefthanded. As a righthanded batter, Lowrie hit .338 with a .525 slugging percentage with the Red Sox. Lefthanded, he hit .222 with a .334 slugging percentage.

Lowrie finished the season on an 8-for-51 (.157) slump, but he played in 52 of the Sox’ 53 games in August and September even as the symptoms worsened. He committed only one error in his rookie regular season, none as a shortstop.

Lowrie originally suffered the injuries while playing at Triple A Pawtucket in May.

This sounds odd. Why didn't they sit him at the end of the season? Regardless, this would indeed help to explain his bad season as a LHH. Also, the kid's pretty amazing if this is true. Any thoughts?

Francona to have back surgery

Via Extra Bases:

Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced today something he has known since May: He will undergo back surgery this offseason, most likely in the coming weeks. He’s going to see a doctor today to determine when he will have the operation and precisely what it will be.

This season was a physically draining one for Francona, with a trip to Japan and the Manny Ramirez saga piled on to the usual viper pit that is managing the Sox. He’s looking forward to taking care of that, starting the evaluation process, and taking in some of the World Series. Maybe. “I don’t know,” he said, cracking a thin smile. “If ‘Prison Break’ isn’t on.”

I love Tito. “If ‘Prison Break’ isn’t on” really made me laugh.
