AFL Pitching

I was just looking over the AFL rosters, and I noticed that the Mesa team has a pretty dam good set of Pitchers. I can't claim to know a whole lot about the other arms since I'm a Met fan, but obviously Slowey's name stands out. The Mets are sending Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey, and Joe Smith. To put that in perspective, last year Evan Maclane was the cream of the crop in the dessert...

So does this mean that organizations are finally starting to send their better pitching prospects, which would obviously give more credence to offensive numbers throughout the league? What other pitchers should we pay attention to out there? Obviously a great game against a Slowey or Pelfrey is more significant that one against a fringe prospect...

Here's a link to the rosters for the entire league. I'm interested in how someone like Fernando Martinez does against the better arms. Any input from fans of other teams would be greatly appreciated...

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/about/page.jsp?ymd=20060821&content_id=121035&vkey=ab out_l119&fext=.jsp&sid=l119

Deolis Guerra

Good news for Met fans, albeit in the somewhat distant future. Deolis Guerra was pulled last night after five innings despite having a no-hitter, which is one good sign. The second good sign is his numbers, which he's putting up at the age of 17 (his B'day was actually in April). After a quick scan of Sally League rosters, I can't find another Pitcher under 19, let alone a 17 year old. Maybe I'm wrong though. Anyway, after last night here's Guerra's digits:

W: 2
L: 3
IP: 30
H: 27
R: 10
ER: 9
BB: 15
K: 19
ERA: 2.70

Obviously he's projectable, but doesn't throw that hard right now (mostly high 80's/low 90's), and the BB:K rate needs to improve. I haven't seen him live, but have been told by a few people that his best pitch is his change-up. Maybe the kid can teach it to Pelfrey when he gets a chance?

Anyway, Fernando Martinez sort of stole this kids luster most of the year, but this might be even more impressive. Met fans should be excited by his pitching, and the fact that the organization is watching him closely. A couple of years ago a press release about a kid throwing a no-no in the minors would've meant more to them than protecting a young promising arm. Take solace in this fact while watching Matt Lindstrom represent the Mets in the futures game...

Henry Owens

At the risk of jinxing him, Henry Owens has literally been unhitable so far this season in AA.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Owens%20%28S%2C%203%29&pos=P&s id=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=452291

G: 5
IP: 6
H: 0
R: 0
K: 14
BB: 2
W: 1
L: 0
SV: 3

I know he's older than the league (26), since he's a converted catcher and all. Has anyone seen him at Binghamton yet though? It's well known that he can ratchet it up to 100 MPH on occasion, but up until now had little else in repertoire. Does this fast start mean he's actually learning a decent second pitch, or are the bats in upstate NY still frozen? I haven't heard any first hand reports on him yet this year, so any info would be great...

Bottom 10 '86 WS, Old School Nintendo Style.

In case anyone ever wondered what the bottom of the 10th inning of the '86 WS would look like when recreated on Nintendo RBI Baseball, here you go! I haven't played a game in years myself, but sadly I remember when this game was considered state of the art!

This guy deserves a tip of the hat, and I like the way he prefaced the video as well. Buckner didn't choke the lead away, Schiraldi and Stanley did. This is now a part of folklore though, so this is probably more for entertainment purposes than anything else. I know Buckner has offered to pull the trigger when they demolish Shea though, so at least he of all people can laugh at it...

http://www.sandiegoserenade.com/2006/04/1986_world_series_game_6_reena

Carlos Gomez Jumping to AA?

Carlos Gomez is apparently skipping High-A ball and starting the season in AA! I know some here have shown some interest in him, and obviously it'll be a move that will merit watching...

http://www.pressconnects.com/apps/p.../604020334/1003

Carlos Gomez, a speedy 20-year-old outfielder, is ranked as the third-best prospect, behind Milledge and 2004 first-round draft pick Philip Humber. Gomez, who played in low Class-A Hagerstown last season, wowed Samuel in spring training.

Anyone know what the deal with Matt Peterson (AA Altoona)is? Is he hurt, because his numbers are a total nightmare. I know walks have almost always been his biggest problem, but last year at this time he was thought of as not too far away. I'm sure John will cover it with the Pirates top 20 review, but I'm not sure when that will be..

G: 8
