A friend and I were having a discussion about Bruins working locally and nationally in the media. And, by this I mean in front of the camera. These are some of the names we came up with, although we're both sure there have to be many more.

Sean Farnham - Fox/Primeticket - Local to L.A.

Don McClean - Fox/Primeticket - Local to L.A.

Marques Johnson - Fox/Primeticket - Local to L.A.

Steve Hartman - KCBS - Local to L.A.

Steve Lavin - ESPN - National Audience (I know, I know!)

Who'd we miss? Feel free to name anybody you know!

"Feldman: When did you first set getting the Rhodes as a goal?

Joseph: I was first made aware of it by Professor Don Morrison of the UCLA Anderson School of Business. He encouraged me to pursue it for the better part of two years"

ESPN's Bruce Feldman interviewed our Chris Joseph about winning the Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford. It is a short but sweet interview. I thought the extended Bruin Family might like to read it, so I linked here for all who are interested.

While starting my day off in the gym this morning I overheard a woman complaining about something by repeatedly saying "They're stupid" and "It's just stupid." It was obvious she was complaining about some petty workplace disagreement. Until I heard her say, "The coaches are just stupid." I was finished with my sit ups so I joined her group and asked "What coaches?" She replied, "The football coaches." I returned to my workout and she continued her rant at which point I overheard her say, "I should stop talking about this, I work there; at USC"

Like I said, it's probably nothing. It would never hold up in court. But am I surprised? Are you?

Funny Hat (via Hec Miranda)

As you all know, we had a glorious evening at the Rose Bowl last night. I am happy to say I was among the fortunate faithful to be there to witness the debut of our Terrific Trio of coaches. I went with a friend from the dorms from my first year at UCLA, Paul, who had scored the tickets.

Rather than enter into repetitive game commentary, I will tell you about the great day we had before the game even started. This will start slow and end with a bang (several in fact) so stay with me to the end.

The one drawback to our day was we had no tailgating gear to speak of, so we determined to make the rounds, visit (and mooch from?) our fellow Bruins. I did have a friend, Graham, who comes from a large UCLA family at the game. So our primary mission was to find him and adopt their tailgater as our own. I missed his Birthday party the night before, so I brought a four pack of Boddington's English Ale as a gift. With goal firmly in mind, Paul and I set out to experience the day.

Our first stop was a small hill north of the Rose Bowl, where some frat boys had set up a game of beer pong. We watched for a minute, and kept going, when we ran into some guys playing a game of Redneck Horseshoes. A fun little game where you toss large metal washers into a homemade box much like the skeeball you will find at any Dave & Buster's. That's Paul on the left.

Redneck Horseshoes (via Hec Miranda)

After a fun time with these guys, we returned to the hill where the beer pong guys had set up a game of Flippy Cup against a group of Volunteers. We won two games to none, in what was actually a very thrilling competition. In the first game, we had a small lead until the vols got to this really big guy who downed his beer and flipped his cup in such short order that they took a lead by an entire beer. We chased 'em down to win it at the end, but it was very close. In true sportsmanship the winners and losers congratulated each other and had a good time.

Flippy Cup (via Hec Miranda)

Paul and I continued to wander around and found another variation of horseshoes called Cornhole. Shortly thereafter we ran into a group of people lawn bowling. I was pretty happy by then, although I am ashamed to admit I never realized there are so many ways to pass the time while tail gating that don't involve tossing a football around. Then we came across a Volunteer tail gater that was anything but. Pay close attention to the license plate frame.

enemy tailgaters (via Hec Miranda)

This didn't take me out of my joy, however, it's all part of the pregame fun and games and just contributes to the overall experience. I don't know about everybody else, but I ran into several SC types at the game, hoping to watch us lose. I gave them some good natured ribs and kept going.

And what a walk. We began on the north end of the golf course and we were in search of the softball fields to the south of the Rose Bowl where Graham and his family traditionally Tailgate. Half an hour before kick off we knew we weren't going to find Graham. (Sorry Graham! I tried!) So Paul and I found a tree for shade and we were joined by a group of Tennessee types who had come all the way out from Tennessee for the game. I exchanged hats with one fun fellow on the condition that he would cheer for the Bruins all game long. Notice the beer in my hand. (Happy Birthday Graham!)

I exchanged phone numbers with Jim Henderson of North Carolina and we cheerfully promised each other to meet again at the UCLA @ Tennessee game next year. Not far from there, we ran into these really nice and accommodating Bruin Alumni.

Toby & Tracy (via Hec Miranda)

I thanked Toby Bailey profusely for the reverse dunk during the '95 tournament. And thanked Tracy Murray for his years of fine representation in the NBA. They in turn thanked us for being fans and contributing to UCLA's Athletic Programs as such. The single best thing I can take away from this was the fact that I found these guys just tailgating like everybody else. They were not behind any velvet ropes, or in some inaccessible Bruin Athletes only party. (Definitely a high point of my day) They were of the people, with the people and for the people. Go Bruins.

Trading Punches (via Hec Miranda)

I found these guys in the shadow of the stadium. They were trading punches, but all in good fun. We used to play this game growing up. (It's a guy thing) We called it Charlie Horses or Playing for Bruises. Running into these Bruins just kind of added to the insanity of it all. We were close!

RB Marquee (via Hec Miranda)

Once we filed through the gates, we ran into KLAC 570's Vic the Brick. I don't doubt he was there to work, but we were running late, so if he was working, he was running late as well. I got the feeling he was there as a fan. I think it was the UCLA Serape that gave me that hunch.

Paul and I decided to load up on hot dogs, water, and snacks before we got to our seats, so we walked around the Rose Bowl and ran into this guy.

I told Aaron Eckhart he did a great job in the Dark Knight, and thanked him for coming out for UCLA Football. I promised him he was going to have a great time. And, for some reason, I totally forgot to get a picture with him. He had his ballcap on nice and low, so I'm sure he was trying to keep a low profile.

After this, Paul and I got to our seats and you know the rest.

Hello all. Those of you long standing members who post here daily may remember that I have stated my desire/goal to write and direct films. For those of you that are new or don't remember, I am a UCLA School of Film and TV grad.

I would like to announce that I have just completed a script for which I will endeavor to find financing and get it made. This script has taken me approximately 3 years, 4 drafts and well over 500 pages to get to the point where I feel good enough about it that I will send it out to Agents, Producers, and Creative Executives. Seems like a long time, I know. Writing is not easy between full time work, at one point over the course of 1.5 years I worked two jobs, while trying to maintain a relationship with a beautiful woman. Somehow I squeezed in time to write, by refusing to give up.

Reading that post about 66's precognitive abilities reminded me that I do have an extended family that I can call upon to send out positive vibes on my behalf. That being said, if anybody has friends or associates within the film making community, I would love to contact them if you are willing to put in a kind word as introduction.

To that end, I will post my email address here for contact purposes. Please only send emails if you have contact to share or you are yourself in the business in a position to help.

Thanks in advance for all the warm wishes and fuzzy feelings you are about to send my way.

Go Bruins! Go Large!

Petros Padakis' rant on KROQ this morning.

I listen to KROQ's Kevin & Bean show in the morning on my drive to work. For those of you that are familiar will know its more entertainment that music. Part of the entertainment are the guests they invite to the show.

This morning Thurs. 5/22 they had Petros Padakis for no apparent good reason other than he is on FOX. Petros Padakis to his credit was energetic and in good mood to ham it up. He had Kevin & Bean playing defense.

Somehow the talk turned to Reggie Bush and Kim Kardasian. Petros blew up. He went off. He ripped Reggie Bush a new asshole. Supposedly Reggie Bush has apointed Kardasian as his talent agency. I guess he's been getting a lot of TV time on her show? I dunno. What is important is that Petros Padakis, as big a Trojan clown as any other ripped him but good. Some highlights:

Reggie is a douche bag. He just wants to stay in the spotlight.

He was a great college player but (here he stopped just short of saying Reggie is a bust in the NFL) Not an every down back in the NFL.

He wants to play in space. Implying that Reggie doesn't want to get hit.

He teed off on Kim Kardasian by making constant fart noises to imply she has a huge ass.

He criticized Matt Leinart also stopping just short of admitting he's been a bust in the NFL. He felt Leinart could be the greatest college QB by the numbers but . . . here he switched gears and lumped Bush & Leinart together for caring more about the public eye than football.

He criticized Leinart for hanging out with Nick Lache, "another douchebag" and hanging out with college sophomores

That's all I remember. This was 14 hours ago.

I haven't posted a diary for a very long time, but when I heard all this, I just knew I was going to log and share every savory morsel with all my Bruin peeps at the Nation.

Coach Neuheisel on Fox: Best Damn Sports Show

So, I was flipping through the channels tonight (3/26/08) before heading out to the movies. The Best Damn Sports Show had Coach Neuheisel as guest but try as I might I could not delay long enough to catch his appearance.

I'm hoping someone else caught it? Maybe someone kind enough to post a video clip of it?
ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Al Davis has asked for Lane Kiffin's resignation.
Read more here:

Another Trojan Failure

It would appear that another of those who would take credit for Coach Norm Chow's success at USC has been exposed for what he really is: A pretender.

I for one was never convinced he was anything but a glorified asst. coach when they gave him and Sarkisian the co-offensive coordinator positions. I felt he was being showed facoritism simply for being related to Monty Kiffin the Defensive Coordinator at the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Tampa Bay you'll remember is where USC coach John McKay went to be forgotten. He did develop a long time relationship there that would include his son Rich McKay being hired as G.M. This is no doubt the connection to the Kiffins that brought about shining example of nepotism at SC.

Lane Kiffin coached the Oakland Raiders to a 4-12 record last year. Doubling the Raiders win total from the year before. But, hardly lighting the NFL on fire.

Kiffin's rise in coaching status while incredibly fast was largely unspectactular. He graduated Fresno State in 98 and immediately signed on as QBs coach for a year. He then spent two years at Colorado State as an offensive line coach. Then he signed up with South Central to coach their Tight Ends for a year. The following year he coached their Wide Recievers for two years before adding the title "passing game coordinator" to his resume. He was then named to Co-Offensive Coordinator with Steve Sarkisian. It is believed he actually maintained his Wide Receivers coaching duties while adding Recruiting Coordinator to his duties.

When he was hired by the Oakland Raiders, he was the youngest head coach in the history of the league.

In my opinion this is a classic example of what happens when blind ambition and nepotism meet. You climb the career ladder until you get placed high enough to sink or swim on your own. More often than not, you sink.

We will have a new mission soon.

In the coming days, for better or for worse, UCLA will announce the hiring of our next football coach. Depending on the name announced we will either jump for joy or nash our teeth. Given the disparity of view points between ourselves and those Bruins posting on different message boards, we will probably do a bit of both.

But what then?

We can build on the groundswell we have created here and at Dump Dorrell and do something really positive or we can retreat back to mere football fans wishing for a national championship.

Considering the detrimental efforts made by a local beat writer who shall remain nameless, I think we should build a case against said individual and put a petition together which will either get him removed from his newspaper; or at least end any access to our beloved program whatsoever.

We have all noticed that his recent coverage of the status of our coach, from before he was fired to the time we have spent conducting a search for his replacement, has been poor at best and outright meddlesome to be honest.

We have at various and numerous times called into question his journalistic integrity. His active efforts to influence our decision have proven that he not only has an agenda but that it is one that runs contrary to our own athletic well being.

This may seem extreme to some of you. But I for one am tired how the MSM depicts our beloved institution and would like to affect some change. I can think of no better place to get started.
