GREAT article on Institutional control

Written by a guest writer for the Barking Carnival in reaction to Jim Tressell's ignomious departure from OSU, this piece absolutely shreds any arguments put forth by those clowns across town that 'it's impossible to keep track of 85 guys'

Huge news - two legends from Coach John Wooden's team - Andy Hill and Lynn Shackelford - bless Bruins Nation's efforts to restore court side seating for students at Pauley.

NFL Draft final Pac 12 numbers.

6

A look at the numbers from this year's NFL draft paints a disturbing picture of UCLA's place in the Pac 12. We are indeed middle of the pack. However, The fact that Oregon is tied for last tells us there is more to this than just numerical face value. I thought this would make for some interesting discussion around here. USC 9 California 4 Colorado 4 Stanford 4 Arizona 3 Oregon State 3 UCLA 3 Utah 2 Washington 2 Arizona State 1 Oregon 1 Washington State 1

OT: DVR recordings.

I have the Arizona game with the perfect ending on my DVR at home and I'm wondering how I can download the video file off the DVR and onto my computer. I have googled for answers, but the pages I've found mention the using of PCs (I'm a Mac) and basically pushing record on one while hitting play on the other. Can anybody help me with this? I seem to remember somebody talking about this once. i want to download the file as it is convert it if need be, and burn to DVD.

JE: One UCLA player who I'm guessing your familiar with is Malcolm Lee, who's from your hometown of Riverside. Have you spent much time with him and what are your impressions of him as a player? RM: I haven't met him, but I've watched his game. There were so many question marks about his game. Is he a defensive player? Is he a scorer? And the one thing Ben Howland has always done is defined roles and I think Malcolm has accepted his role. I haven't had a chance to speak to him, but I love the way he brings the intensity and gets everyone involved. I think they should make the tournament regardless of what their outcome is in the conference tournament. I'm hoping. You never know though.

UCLA Prof might help rewrite Egyptian Constitution

12

"Mr. Abou El Fadl, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a critic of Mr. Mubarak, has spent hours on the phone in the last several days discussing ways to rewrite the Egyptian Constitution, including talks with some of the jurists selected to serve on the panel created by the interim military government. We're gonna have a foundation of toughness, knocking guys off the ball, because that's how football is played. We're gonna recruit the heck out of the state of Michigan, recruit in Ohio and the rest of the Midwest. The fortunate thing we have is, Michigan is a national brand, so it gives you a chance to recruit nationally at the same time. I just think those guys from the state of Ohio and this state, they understand the last Saturday in November is pretty significant, and always will be. http://detroitnews.com/article/20110208/OPINION03/102080351/1131/sports/U-M-s-Brady-Hoke--If-we-don-t-win-Big-Ten--we-ve-failed

This is someone we can sign that may pay immediate dividends. He's an unheralded recruit out of Chandler, AZ (Hamilton High). He plays both ways, WR and DB. He was described to me as another Alteraun Verner by one of my friends at the NFL Network. This was particularly interesting to me because this friend coached Alteraun as a young man. Go Bruins.

Is UCLA inferior?

11

in his post game coverage of the Kansas vs South Central game today Matt Horlander states, "this is the second close call to a Cali club in less than two weeks; fellow inferior Los Angeles school UCLA recently almost knocked off the 'Hawks at home." It's one thing to say we lost to Kansas, which we did, but another thing entirely to say we are inferior to Kansas when it is widely considered that they won on a bad call.

BSPN's Maisel 'skewers' Bush for 'Empty Gesture'

3

Column includes a quick video cut up of various Bush denials over the years which is fantastatic. Maisel states: "Pardon my inability to take this stripping of rank seriously. Bush's gesture is as empty as the last four years of his answers." He then ends his essay by defending Bush! Unbelievable.

Yardbarker claims Neuheisel was booed after Stanford game?

22

"Following UCLA’s 35-0 loss to Stanford at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, Bruins’ head coach Rick Neuheisel gave his traditional postgame pep talk to the Bruin faithful in the stands. . . . Midway through his talk a Bruin fan in the stands yelled, "Stop talking and win a game!" According the Plaschke the rest of the speech was mostly drowned out by boos." I was at the game but left after Stanford scored their 3rd touchdown. Did anybody stick around? Can you confirm if this happened?

USC stripped of its Grantland Rice Trophy

2

It seems that a committee of past and present officers of the Grantland Rice Trophy trust decided that the University of Sanctioned Cheaters were not deserving of the 2004 honor as the nation's top football team. This is just the latest shoe to drop in the story of NCAA Sanctions handed down in June.

Can anybody recommend a good hotel in Tennessee?

I'm flying in to Knoxville for a wedding, and need to reserve a hotel in the Maryville area. I'm going to call the 7 hotels listed by google (follow the link) for prices and availability; but, I'm hoping some of Y'all who know the area better can give me some 'on the ground' observations. Any input will be greatly appreciated. PS: Those of you who are familiar with my posts since last year when I attended the UCLA @ Tennessee game at Neyland: I'm happy to report that Brandon and Rose are getting married! And, I've been invited!

here is one hard and fast rule I would make: Any college that is put on any athletic probation — like the University of Southern California — for violating NCAA rules should not be allowed to have cheerleaders at any of its games. No cheerleaders for cheaters.

Lane Kiffin: World's Sexiest Woman? Vote now.

12

Lane Kiffen is born to compete. We all know this. So, when he was selected to Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive contest it should have been no surprise that he would go on to unseat Natalie Gulbis and follow that up with a defeat of racing hottie Danica Patrick. You can do your part by voting today. Help him prove yet again what a winner he is!

What was going to be a fanshot linking to tWWL's story about the NCAA infractions committee hearings in Arizona quickly became a LOL head shaking experience when reading the comments. Some favorites: "jgfleet: They cant pin nothing on the football program" "peedub82: these comments are nothing more then your content for the SC football program."

Heisman Pundit continues to pile it on SC

Focusing on the Ed Ogre recruiting malfeasance, (which he downgrades to "no NCAA rules were broken") he has this gem to share: "What’s even more interesting, however, is how the Norm Chow-to-USC deal has fallen apart. . . . By itself, the idea of Kiffin as USC coach would’ve been laughed away as a major joke. But with that All-Star staff, it was deemed okay." In discussing SC's spin machine's attempt to down play that failure he adds: "Those quotes, which were seen on television by millions (I presume), are nowhere to be found in the official press conference transcript. Soviet historians would be proud."
