Joel Przybilla Out for the Year...Can We Benefit?

ESPN's John Hollinger points out that the timing for the Bulls to make a coaching change seems to be perfect, with a combination of a season-long block of six home games, and some days off in between for the new coach to implement any changes during practice. And when you add in the fact that they have a guy with 14 years of head coaching experience currently serving as an assistant who could step in for Del Negro in Bernie Bickerstaff, the question likely becomes not "if," but "when" the change [from Vinny Del Negro] will be made.

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/12/10/are-vinnie-del-negros-days-numbered-in-chicago/ So it seems our old buddy Bernie Bickerstaff might just have finally have found himself a soft landing spot. I'm still pretty bitter on his behalf about the way he was unceremoniously dismissed from the organization because he wasn't one of Michael Jordan's buddies, so this could be a much better way to end things in his NBA career.

Alexis Ajinca is getting playing time with the Maine Red Claws of the development league, but he's still not making shots: 3-of-13 in his first two games. I find that striking that a 7-footer would struggle that much to score against D-League big man. Almost every night Ajinca should have a significant height advantage.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/bobcats/story/1104584.html--Rick Bonnell, Charlotte Observer So yeah, Larry Brown isn't the problem with Ajinca's development. He's just not good.

That's precisely what Celtics coach Doc Rivers saw, scouting the Bobcats before and after this trade. Before Jackson, Rivers said, the Bobcats were the only team in the league you could afford to defend in a straight zone, every player with one foot in the paint. Now, Rivers said, Jackson demands "one and probably two more (sets of) eyes. And that makes you a better basketball team just by his presence."

--Charlotte Observer So for all the whining about Jackson's inefficiency and turnovers, there's no less an expert than an NBA Coach of the Year and NBA Champion talking about it.

Pacers forward Danny Granger out 4-6 weeks with torn right plantar fascia

+

Disappointing for Indy, with the way they started the season so well. (A reasonably healthy) Mike Dunleavy and Brandon Rush are good players in their own right, but that's a lot of slack to pick up. So there's another obstacle likely out of the way for a potential Bobcats playoff run to the 6-7-8 seed. Now whether that's a good or a bad thing for this franchise long-term is debatable, but for this time, I'll just report the facts.

"I can't play 82 games like this," --Raja Bell

http://twitter.com/gswscribe/status/5848334956 Interesting that Bell now feels this way. I thought he was pretty committed to playing the season out if he had stayed in Charlotte, but I guess he's tried it and things haven't gotten much better.

Bogut sits out practice

+

So the Bobcats will have a little easier go of it on Friday night. Noted Okafor-killer Andrew Bogut is going to be out several weeks for with a leg strain and bruise. Expect mediocre journeyman Dan Gadzuric to fill in for him in the starting five. Also, backup big man Luc Richard Mbah a Moute is going to be questionable at best with a foot sprain.

"I think it's two teams mirror images of each other going on Thursday night. Two teams, hey, both won divisions last year. Both had double-digit wins and they're just trying to get back to .500. We're doing some decent things, and we've got to see if we can carry it over." --QB Jake Delhomme, on Thursday night's game against Miami.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/car/report#notes_quotes Jake could be a writer or something if this football thing doesn't work out. Great, succinct summary of what this game is and what it means for the teams involved.

Delhomme hospitalized, but cleared to return after emotional win

1

So Jake went to the hospital to get an MRI because the team was concerned about internal injuries (remember, we were responsible for Chris Simms' potentially fatal ruptured spleen some years back), but everything checked out ok. Hoover's got X-rays on his injured ankle, but they came back negative, so he'll likely be back before the season is through. Fiammetta left the game with a concussion. It's at least the second of his career, as he sat out a game his junior year at Syracuse because of another.

Tyson Chandler (ankle, toe) played 16 minutes in his Bobcats debut on Tuesday, posting four points and two rebounds. Chandler appeared in just 45 games last year, averaging a measly 8.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks. It wasn't long ago when he could be counted on for nearly a double-double and two blocks per game, but we're not anticipating a rebirth in Charlotte.

+

During his media availability Monday, Brown was asked about what the Bobcats could have done for a backup power forward. Brown mentioned that Drew Gooden was available. Brown mentioned that Hakim Warrick was available. Brown mentioned that Antonio McDyess was available. You'll notice that none of those players are on the Bobcats roster as training camp starts here Tuesday morning. What does that tell you about the Bobcats' commitment to winning?

Most Valuable NHL Role Players: Chad LaRose, Carolina Hurricanes

1

SI knows what's up: Signed by Carolina as an undrafted free agent in 2005, the speedy and obtrusive winger worked his way up from the fourth line to the second last season, scoring 19 goals plus four more in the playoffs. He's at his best in big games, a quality that earned him a new two-year contract in July along with public praise from GM Jim Rutherford as "a key guy for our franchise." Interestingly enough, the very next guy on the list is our boy Andrew Ladd. I was at the draft that year, and I guess I'm a little sad he never turned out to be the star the RBC thought we were trading up to get that day.

marion barber did not go thru today's walk through. unless he has a miraculous recovery he will likely be deactivated tomorrow nt

http://twitter.com/Jay_Glazer/status/4421887710--Jay Glazer I don't know how much it matters with the depth the Cowboys have at the position in Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, but it certainly doesn't help them that Barber will likely be gone.

Wide Receiver Stats: 2009 Regular Season

Remember all that offseason bitching and moaning about how woefully underused Steve Smith is? Well, take a look at the NFL targets list among wideouts through the first two weeks.

"There will be players in that B group that we’d like to get in a game but just won’t get a game because of the number. At the same time, I would rather sacrifice that than play nine exhibition games and spend the first five games just filling holes with the guys and saying ‘Let’s wait until the last two or three until we get serious.’"

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=498867 So it seems Mr. Maurice may have had something to do with the sharp reduction in preseason games this year.

Rutherford: Canes set on defense

1

Hadn't seen this mentioned here, but this article quotes Rutherford as saying that we will definitively trade Babchuk and will not sign Seidenberg. In other roster construction news, Brendan Shanahan (who some had considered for a fourth-line spot here) has signed with NJ.

More Mets down: Castillo sprains ankle, Niese strains hamstring

5

So Luis Castillo sprained his ankle walking down the dugout stairs, while Jonathon Niese strained his hammy stretching for a throw at first. I almost feel bad for the Mets the way things have gone for them...naaaah.

Bobcats Announce 2009-10 Regular Season Schedule

+

We open at Boston and then host NY two nights later. The schedule is a bit more favorable down the stretch, with 19 of 41 games at home down the stretch after 22 home games in the first half. Our national TV schedule includes four games...on NBA TV. Seriously. How sad. We do have a pair of weekend back-to-back home sets in January and March for the first time since the end of the '06-'07 season.

Chipper rips umpire over fist bump, ejections

1

So Chipper didn't speak after the game on Wednesday. On Thursday, he did, and he was less than pleased. The article provides a bit of context and an explanation of some of the crazy stuff from the game.

Bronson Arroyo: Bad andro may be cause

+

In this article, Bronson admits to the use of both Andro (which he loved as a workout enhancer) and Amphetamines (which he's since replaced with caffeine and ginseng) during the time both were still legal in baseball. He says that he stopped taking Andro because he heard through the grapevine that, because of lax production standards, some andro was laced with known steroids, such as Winstrol." He also surmises that David Ortiz' positive test may be related to such an instance. Ortiz has admitted to the use of products actuired in the Dominican, where regulation standards are much less stringent than here.

Omar Infante, who is currently taking batting practice and traveling with the team in the current phase of his rehab from a broken hand, reports that his hand is feeling great. Unfortunately, though, he is having problems with his elbow, which may set back his timetable. They had hoped he'd be ready to go on a 5-6 game rehab assignment on Friday when the team returns to Atlanta, but he may now need to come back with them.

Hey, all: Just wanted to clarify something quickly. The Observer is requiring every employee to take a week of unpaid leave in this fiscal quarter. By coincidence, this is my week. I can't undo that, so I couldn't chase the Okafor trade. I'm using this week productively to take care of two aging parents. But I'd love to be writing about this interesting situation that seems mostly about payroll management. See you when I'm off furlough.

A bit of an explanation as to why the Observer hasn't been covering this story any closer. Pretty sad, really.

But with Buddy Carlyle nearly set to return to the bullpen mix for the first time since being diagnosed in early June with Type 1 Diabetes, there's a good chance that Wren will bypass the opportunity to add another reliever.
