Ryan Field Detroit's version of Chris Rose, is well becoming Chris Rose. Fox making a play to take some territory from ESPN with FS1. And Field is part of the first charge. With FS1, NBCSPORTS NETWORK, CBS SPORTSNETWORK and ESPN laying off people does the TV sports landscape become more diverse? Or is does ESPN slay all competitors?

According to Chad Ford on ESPN, The Dallas Mavericks seem to be very interested in trading the 13th pick so they can free up cap room to make a run for Dwight Howard.

Is this a pick the Pistons should make a play for, packaging their 2 second rounders? Guys in this range include Kentavious Caldwell Pope, Dennis Schroder, and Steven Adams (consensus from both NBADRAFT and Draft Express, players in totally different spots between sites not included)

Well with the NBA draft combine coming up in Chicago and understanding that its pretty much worthless except for getting accurate measurement, I only really want to talk about a few prospects and not even ones on the Pistons radar.

I think like alot of Americans I like a good redemption story, and this combine will showcase potentially three of them: Glen Rice Jr., Ricardo Ledo and Norvel Pelle.

Rice is probably the most well known, the guy who was kicked off Gerogia Tech and took his talents to the Rio Grande, a 6'6 205 pound SG/SF he took the D-League by storm with 25 pts and 9.5 bounds in their playoffs. Guy has an awesome jumper and can get steals and blocks (but only if he's feels like working for it.) Glen Rice has rocketed up boards from 2nd rounder to mid first rounder (Draft Express 24 Chad Ford 18.) I'm rooting for Rice because it would be another feather for the D-League. Something I think is sorely under utilized in the current NBA.

Next Ricardo Ledo a 6'7 195 pound SF/SG he was committed to play for the Providence Friars, but never got onto the court. Coming out of highschool Ledo had an 89 ranking from ESPN and was a Providence, RI native to boot. But Ledo was known for having a rough background and as Rodney Dangerfield said

"the neighborhood I grew up in was tough, they asked a kid to prove the law of gravity... he through the teacher out the window."

Maybe it wasn't that bad for Ledo but he did do 4 High Schools in 5 years. The last time Draft Express checked in with Ledo was 2011 and they saw someone who had alot of positives when it came to scoring, perimeter, pullup and attacking the basket and had worked on his negatives with mixed results (defense). NBA Draft has him at the 60th pick while Draft Express has him 46th out of the top 100.

Last but not Least Norvel Pelle listed anywhere from 6-9 to 7'1 and 199 to 215 pounds. This big man has not competed against anyone in two years. He was supposed to go to St. Johns but grades kept him out and then Iona, but he opted for the draft. He's been bouncing around prep schools and community colleges, and his work ethic and drive were questioned. But at private workouts and according to his trainer that is no longer an issue. He was known for shot blocking, baseline speed, and defending multiple positions. He is Draft Express's 99 out of 100.

I'd like to see at least two of the guys make it two the draft and possibly all three. I was a big Herb Pope supporter last draft, and was sad that he had to kick off his career in Israel so to see these guys get in will make me happy and have some underdogs to route for. until they do something to show they're not good at basketball. The combine, why else watch it?

The need for a Veteran shooting guard

With the lottery still a couple of weeks off, I just had a quandry. In terms of a shooting guard.

If we are lucky enough to land in the draft high, or have someone fall to us and in either situation wind up with someone like a Ben Mclemore (the first case) or Victor Oladipo (the latter) would either be ready to contribute right away or would some money need to be spent on a bridge player?

Looking at the available UFA on Hoopsworld I see guys like OJ Mayo, , Monta Ellis, Kevin Martin, and Manu Ginoblli who will probably command large salaries I'm not talking about them. I was thinking maybe making a run on Tony Allen (current salary 3.3 million) or someone like a Randy Foye or Marco Bellenelli.

Regardless of who (any other options are welcome) the question is would the top 2 SG need to play behind someone or would they start right away. Just curious.

PS would we need to bring in FA or just let'em play behind Knight or Stuckey? I personally would like to see Stuckey traded and Knight beginning a 6th man back up PG role.

NBA Draft 2013: Is Kentavious Caldwell-Pope an outside possibility for Pistons?

I'm just throwing out an argument for a guy I've mentioned casually in the comments for someone we could pick if the 7th pick thing happens. Kentavious Caldwell Pope SG 6'6 (in shoes) 205 lbs. Georgia.

I'm gonna clue you in on where I'm coming from. Orginally after looking at Draft Express' latest mock draft, i thought (piggy backing on Mike Payne's idea) that the Pistons could get a whole new back court in one draft a la 2007 (Stuckey and Afflalo) and actually stick with it. This was the idea that Burke would be available at number 7 and we could package our 2 second rounders and get a low 1st round pick (like the Knicks at 24) and take this guy Pope.

Well with Marcus Smart going back to school, we know all the draft options basically move up one, thereby lowering the chance for us to get Burke. Then I noticed that other draft sites (ESPN, NBADRAFT.NET, NBA.COM) had Caldwell Pope already shooting up (as of this writing Draft Express is the only site that has him still in the high 20's at 26 to the Wolves). NBA Draft has him at 14, NBA.COM'S Dave Aldrige has him as the third best shooting guard. ESPN's Chad Ford has jumped him from the 21st overall pick on April 15th to now listing him in the lottery at around the 10-12 pick (did the auto-draft game for a while one time did he fall out of the lottery and was replaced with Gorgui Dieng from Lousiville, don't know why.)

Kentavious at this point has been a sleeper because as Aldridge has pointed out:

His Georgia team didn't make the NCAAs, losing to LSU in the second round of the SEC Tournament and finishing below .500 (15-17... He put up some numbers and did the best he could for that team.....Caldwell-Pope wasn't the most consistent perimeter shooter -- he shot just 43 percent from the floor this season -- but he also was the only game in town most nights for the Bulldogs....I thought he was really compliant with what [Georgia coach Mark] Fox asked him to do, but he was ready to take over when needed."

But here is what he does do, and this is an amalgamation of Express, NBA.COM and NBADRAFT.NET: The guy can shoot, from the floor his weakness is driving to the basket (after the last two years of Stuckey and Knight, does this bother anyone?) Defensively ...

For the most part, he does a good job consistently locking in to straight man-to-man situations. He can run into some trouble when dealing with off-ball movement or fighting through screens on pick-and-rolls, where he seems to just go through the motions at times, but has the tools to be an excellent defender and doesn't appear resistant to putting in the effort on this end of the floor.

The guy didn't have the Gaudy numbers of CJ Mcollum or the percentages of Mclemore or Oladipo, but here is what he did have from College Basketball Reference a true shooting percentage of .579, efg% of 53%, total rebound percentage of 12.4, steal percentage of 3.8, clearly adjust for rookie learning curve, I'm just saying the numbers appear to be in the park for a legitimate NBA prospect.

So that is my pitch for Kentavious Caldwell Pope, 7th pick Detroit Pistons 2013 NBA draft. Above Oladipo (not sold on his offensive contribution potential) Muhammed (too one dimensional) and McCollum (can't handle having ANOTHER combo guard). I'll leave it at that.

Update 4:19 8:10pm Well I was wrong I thought they waited till the lottery to determine the draft order but they did it today HOORAY! 7th and 38th and the 56th booyah, nice draw for the Pistons and the Clippers :) Now the debate beings what to do with that 56th pick eh XstremeInsanity?

4/19/2013 UPDATE: Clarification- According to Keith Langlois, in answering a recent Piston Mailbag question, despite the fact that LA Clippers Finished in 4th place for the Playoffs ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies, this 2nd round pick will be determined by a draw. Per Langlois:

The Pistons also have a 50-50 shot at getting the second-round pick of the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies finished with identical records. The draw to determine which team will pick ahead of the other in the first round will also determine if the Pistons get that second-round pick.....The Clippers must win their tiebreaker with Memphis in order for the Pistons to get the pick, because it would mean Memphis would pick ahead of the Clippers in the second round – 55th, pushing the Clippers pick to 56th and leaving it unprotected and, thus, belonging to the Pistons

oRIGINAL:I know everybody is unhappy with our win streak here in the meaningless end of the season that's effing up our draft stock. But I have chosen to focus on something entirely less meaningful: The potential of getting a 2nd 2nd round pick.

Thanks to the Alex Acker trade of February 2009 if the Clippers finish with with 5th best record overall or better we get an extra 2nd round pick.

Right now it's close they're 6th behind Memphis at 54-26 while Memphis is 55-26. The Clippers have 2 games to go and Memphis has one. If my calculations are correct (and they never are)the Clips will move up with 2 wins obviously and if they have tied records they'll win cause they beat Memphis 3-1 this year.

Now why is this exciting? Because it means the potential to get guys like Detroit's own Ray McCallum, a guy from France named Jordan Abodou, Pierre Jackson from Baylor: come on who wouldn't want a Pierre on the Pistons? or Seth Curry younger brother of Stephan Curry(all of these according to NBADRAFT.NET) or according to Draft Express big men like Richard Howell from NC State, averaged a dub dub and Trevor Mkbakwe.

Doug Collins?

With the Pistons/76's game tonight, and the fact that he's resigning at the end of this season, could you see Collins as a better option than Lawerence Frank?

Having not watched the NBA till 2000, I don't much about his first tenure in Detroit, just through wikipedia I've seen that he was fired 45 games into the 97-98 season with a record of 21-24, having gone 54-28 the season before.

With limited research the same things come up in describing Collins he's brilliant, he gets guys to play above their talent, he's tough, and eventually he grates on the players because they can never live up to the effort he wants from them.

If it's not Collins, I guess my question becomes are these the types of traits that would push the talent we have on the Pistons to a hire level? Or do our guys (by guys I mean the ones who are the building blocks Monroe, Drummond, Knight, Jerebko, Singler, Middleton and the last year guys Stuckey and Villanueva) need a "players coach", that is not as tough but better at the x's and o's? Someone like say Phil Jackson (obviously not him but if you can think of another example throw it out there).

What kind of coach, in your opinion, elevates the Pistons? Feel free to bandy some names about.

1. That we only have to run 4 big men? and if so who actually is the 4th big man?

2. Charlie V and Austin Daye are very talented players that they just can't find the time for?

Well coming off the Pistons' 8th loss in a row, Knight is showing some improvement in Assist % and total assists but still has a maddening amount of regular turnovers and a low FG%, while at the same time Rodney Stuckey is just now breaking out of the rut in his first season at starting SG. It all makes me wonder if it would have been wise to keep him at PG a little longer.

The first thing I'd like to point out is that I have in no way any delusions that Rodney Stuckey as a PG would ever win an NBA Championship, no this just an exercise to explore the idea that if he were the starting PG currently, our low wouldn't be so low and we could sniff the bottom rung of the playoffs. Basically making baby step improvements toward relevancy.

The Hypothesis is that year 4 was the benchmark for Rodney and (had he stayed at the position of PG) that afterword he would show the continuing improvement to get to the level of serviceable playoff calibre starting point guard. In his fourth year Rodney set career bests in TS% .54, AST% 27.5, assists 5.2, assist/to ratio 2.33 and FG% 44, and efficency 15.4.

In 2010-2011 his assist/to ratio was better than Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Brandon Jennings, and Darren Collison. And his TS% was better than Mike Conley, Goran Dragic, Monta Ellis and Russell Westbrook. Also his assist percentage was better than Brandon Jennings, Goran Dragic, Monta Ellis , and within a percentage of Ty Lawson and Mike Conley.

In similar mid level point guards like Kyle Lowery, Mike Conley, Monta Ellis and Goran Dragic there was marked improvement in assist percentage from year 4 to year 5 and with Lowery there has been continual improvement from yrs 5-7. I know its a small sample size to go off of but they do fall close with in the years active and number of years in the league.

The big if of course is whether or not another year at starting pg we have allowed Stuckey for continued improvement and better fortunes. Could one more year have made the difference? There is no way to tell, but we have for 2 more yrs with this year guarenteed and on the hook for 4 million if he's waived before the deadline next year. So in closing I'd like to get your input with the poll below or any other thoughts. Thanks.

Question about the upcoming games?

I’ll be interested to see how L plays in his lineups in game 4 of the preseason against the magic, because he’s said in the past that he was going to use the early preaseason to experiment and give guys time in rotation and the latter part of the preaseason to develop cohesiveness and chemistry among the Set rotations. I just wonder when the early part of the preseason ends and the latter part of the preseason starts for frank game 4, 5 or 6?

What do you guys think we will finally see Monroe and Drummond together on the floor?

Do we get to see Jonas start at small forward?

We will have one last opportunity to go through the guard nightmare that is Knight and Daye?

Or do we get the same old boring Pistons starting lineup through the last 5 preason games?

Any thoughts are welcome.

First of all I'm really interested in tonight's game because of what appeared courtesy of Vince Ellis in the Freep:

Frank said he would experiment with the Pistons' starting lineup tonight when they face the Bucks at Milwaukee, but you can expect the experimenting to end quickly, as the Pistons start preparing for their season opener later this month.

So with that knowledge what be either your ideal Piston starting lineup or just the craziest line up you could think of?

2nd Frank said rookies Khris Middleton and Kim English would be part of the rotation tonight.

This is just an x's and o's question not an absolute, not a pronouncement, just a question. Once again it has been confirmed by David Mayo on MLive that Lawrence Frank is using Terrence Williams soley as PG.

Now what I was wondering if by some chance Williams beat the odds and played well enough to force the Pistons to cut a guarenteed contract (totally unlikely) Could he facilitate the offense while at the same time being allowed to defend against the 3. Does your offensive assignment coincide with your defensive? In general do nba players have to defend their counter parts on opposing teams?

I only ask because as others have pointed out williams is not a strong shooter but according to assesments from his draft (such as nbadraft.net and draftexpress.com) he has the physical talents to defend the one-three. I just wonder if there is a scenario where he is assisting to better perimeter shooters like Knight or English or Villanueva and then coming back on the defensive side using his athletiscm to defend people like say Danny Granger, Paul Pierce, etc. Any insight would be appreciated.

Jonas Jerebko's Final Team Sweden Tournament Numbers

Well today was the last of the Eurobasket 2013 qualifying tournament aka summer league for Europeans. And these are the numbers for the Swedish Eagle himself.

A few things stand out for me even though, yes this is just a European qualifyer and yes the Swedes were in a weak pool not playing any current NBA players, and finally yes they ran offense through Jonas.

1. Even with a slight ankle injury Jonas commpleted the tournament, played 8 games and averaged 31 minutes a game. To me a positive that shows he totally past the ACL injury and back to rookie form.

2. Not his overall pts per game but his shooting percentage of 52% seems like a positive much higher than last years 47 percent and better than his career best year. Hustle plays off the bench are good, points..... are just as good.

3. 1.9 Steals JJ showed some penchant his rookie season for the steal averaging 1 per game but that dropped to .06 last year. It'd be nice to see this as a developing skill.

There you go, would enjoy your input. And for those of you that have been making the point of the lack of level of competition in this thing. JJ went up against names like former Alabama forward..... Charles Davis, and Zackary Wright a guy who went right from high school to the pros..... the French pros. So yeah come at me Ko(yeah pun)!

Well the numbers are in for Slava's equivelent of summer league. How do you interpret them? I'm satisfied with the blocks and those might not even tell the whole story of what he can do on defense (if we believe George Davis' interview with Keith Langlois on True Blue Pistons)

Oh man this is looking really bad! Were paying Jason Maxiell 5 million dollars this season and he's not even on the team! We're paying Corey Maggette 10 million and he's not even better than Austin Daye! The good news is for all you idiots who were complaining about how many SFs we have on the roster how could not know Kyle Singler was our third string PF of the future! (he said in the most sarcastic way possible.)

Anywho I always feel bad for the schlub that ESPN sticks with creating and or updating the depth charts during the offseason, and now with this Dwight Howard trade it's gonna take awhile to get any real depth charts from ESPN.

But seriously contemplate this roster who would you add minus Max, and Khris Middleton?

It's official. The Piston will play in London!

Well the Pistons will play the NY Knicks in London, and since it's a home game that means one thing London and Detroit are now one city, thank god Detroit needed some new tax revenue. Thats an And One Mixtape legally binding agreement.

Hello I'm Michigan Bills Fan, allow me to explain I'm a Buffalo Bills fan living in Michigan, moved to the state in 96 and since then the Pistons have become my NBA team as I did not watch much Basketball before moving to this state.

So far my contributions to this site have been the idea of a will bynum waker russel back up backcourt, a terrible joke about hassan whiteside and letting people know about the ESPN nba trade machine hopefully this post will get me to .500 in the good idea department. So I'm jumping ahead to the 2013 off season where the Pistons will have the most money to spend on free agency since 2009 hopefully it will be better spent. The Detroit News has us at around 20 million while ESPN's rumor section says it could be up to around 30 million. I'm going with 26 million, I ONLY based this on the contracts coming off after this season. (Maggette 10 million, maxiell 5 million, will bynum 3.5 million, austin daye 2.9 million, the money we owe rip hamilton 6 million).

So without further achoo ladies and germs, i know i know, here are my ideas about how we should spend that money. Okay this is based on three things 1. I went with straight up UFA, no restricted, player option, team option, trades, etc. 2. The assumption that we can get these guys for around the price of their current salaries. 3. My ideas of what the most pressing needs are and the best options to fill them.

Ok Need Number 1: PG! starting with this because, based on Mr. Payne's exhaustive analysis, Brandon Knight i'm assuming is not the guy. The solution UFA Devin Harris of the Atlanta Hawks. Picked Harris because of his price 8.5 million and the similarity of his statistics to a recent DBB favorite

Need Number 2: An experienced center to ease the development of Andre Drummond and allow Greg Monroe to move to PF as soon as possible. The Solution- Al Jefferson price 15 million Stats Age 27 pts 16.2 bounds 8.9 blocks 1.4. Other options PF (Paul Millsap, David West, Dejuan Blair, Lamar Odom) Center (Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum) Went with Jefferson because you don't get those numbers from the PF'S and the top tier Centers are too expensive. I know there are other centers like Splitter 3.9 mill, Pekovic 4.9 mill and Dalembert 6.8 mill but they seem like MLE and you gotta go big or go home i feel.

Need Number 3: Prince eventual replacement at SF. The solution: The Draft- let's face it I don't think were outta the lotto this after this year so we'll have our first round pick NBADRAFT.NET has 6 guys listed as potential small forwards while Draft Express has 3 listed in the top 14. So the numbers look good for getting the guy we need and paying him a rookie salary. They only options for SF in FA are Rashard Lewis or Kyle Korver gross.

SG- EHHH we have Stuckey and Knight for 2 more years I think with the other guys we can survive with these two sharing SG for the forseeable future.

So there you go Harris and Jefferson cost us 23.5 million the rest we sign our 1st round SF draft pick. My totally unscientific, theoretical, and unsubstatiated analysis of the 2013 offseason. Feel free to discuss and enlighten me on the cap situation if you have the knowledge. Thanks!
