Draft Party Checklist
Wife and small children out for the evening? Check Uverse working? Check Wore my JL55 jersey over my work clothes today? Check Tri-Tip marinating? Check Friends coming? Check LOTS of quality beer in the fridge (Pliny the Elder, Hoptologist, Arrogant Bastard) Check, check and CHECK!!! Someone else hiding the remote in case the Rams pick Justin Blackmon? Check!!
SJ39 wants Blackmon
Interesting interview of Steven Jackson by Matthew Berry. I don't have a link because I got it from my pod app but it is on today's Fantasy Focus Football podcast. He also hints that the Rams don't have much spark. Anyway, as much as I don't want Blackmon at #6, I figured I'd post that SJ does. Find it and check it out on ESPN.com
Newest member of the Arsenal family
Everybody, say hello to Gunner!!
We've had him for almost a week and he already plays soccer. Sorta. He boxes at the soccer ball and barks at it. He's a ton of work right now but he'll be a great dog once he's grown (he's already mostly house trained and knows what 'NO' means ... though he clearly ignores it sometimes).
We spent hours trying to come up with a name. We went through literally hundreds of names from traditional to goofy. We tried to come up with a name about the way he looks, about the way he acts. About his birthday (Feb 14th). Nothing quite clicked. I told my wife that when we come up with the right name, it will just feel right.
We were all quiet for about 10 minutes and my wife said "Gunnar." I said, "That's it!."
It is perfect because he's a German dog (Gunnar is a German name) and I just spelled it like the Arsenal nick.
Anyway, thought I'd share!
Spending, injuries and buying players
It is generally assumed that Arsenal are going to buy a few players this summer. Who those may be is up for debate, however. I have been saying "I want Hazard." or "I want Gotze." etc ... and many others on here have said similar.
I wonder though, if you look at the roster and the players on loan, if maybe our spending will MOSTLY just be keeping our current players. Rather than buying new players (at a premium cost), doesn't it make more sense to just NOT lose current players?
We paid Rosicky. We are going to pay Song. I can't imagine we don't pay RvP. We paid Vermaelen... there is no transfer fee to keep a player.
Also, getting players back from injury is almost like a new signing (seems like I heard that somewhere before).
With our current roster and loan players, let's look at our starters (more or less).
RvP
Miyaichi / Wilshere / Ox
Song / Arteta
Gibbs / Vermaelen / Koscielny / Sagna
Szczesny
The bench, would look something like ...
Fabianski, Jenkinson, Rosicky, Ramsey, Gervinho, Walcott, Santos, Mertesacker, Djourou, Coquelin, New centerback, new striker, new left back?
Anyway, my point being, when healthy (when healthy), we are pretty close to having a roster that will seriously contend for the EPL title.
Podolski spells, RvP on occasion (like, almost every game for 20 minutes with the occasional start).
Miyaichi is the creative attacking force we are looking for in Gotze or Hazard and seems to be able to play wide or up with RvP.
I'd love to see another centerback (send Djourou out on loan), another left back (unless Santos and Gibbs can reasonably be expected to no longer be injured simultaneously), and really, what else?
Beyond that, improving the roster would involve costly transfer fees, high wages and the demotion of a current fan favorite.
Who's a regular starter now (when we are injury free) that you'd rather see on the bench? (For me, it is Walcott).
I'd like to see us sell Walcott while his value is high (relatively to his value 3 months ago).
I guess my point is, we are a lot closer to being 'set' than I originally thought (injuries notwithstanding) and most of these guys are still improving.
Thoughts?
OMG too funny!!
Off topic thread
Feel free to use this for any soccer related off topic topic (as in, something we don't have a thread for but not necessary a discussion on whaling or pop music). Anyway, I have two things. First, What's up with Eisfeld? Is he playing on the reserves? Is there a sub-reserve team that we play prospects on? I have heard nothing about him at all (good or bad). Also, I hardly care about Chelsea, but I can't help but think David Luis is an outside back or even a midfielder. Is he a center back soley because of his height? His attitude is all about attack and not defense. Thoughts?
An exercise in higher thinking
Forget what you know. Forget your biases. Forget your emotional attachments. Forget sunk costs. Forget what Jeff Fisher just recently said... If Robert Griffin III is a better prospect than Sam Bradford, shouldn't we draft him and ship Bradford? I didn't say RG3 was better (and I didn't say he wasn't), but the Rams are in the unique position of having a choice for franchise QB ... with a bit of hindsight, if you will. Again, forget your biases and emotional attachments. New regime. I think the Rams should pick their franchise QB next month. If they trade the pick, it SHOULD mean they think Bradford will be better than RG3. They can't stick with Bradford because he's too expensive to trade advantageously or because they've already paid him a ton of money. That's loser talk. If Bradford is the better QB, trade the pick. If RG3 is, trade Bradford. If we keep Bradford and he becomes an average or even above average QB while RG3 is elite, then it was a mistake to keep Bradford. We've seen warning signs on Bradford, do we ignore them? ... or is RG3 overrated and overhyped? Discuss ...
Affordable, young, exciting attacking midfielder ... and I think, cheap.
Giovanni Dos Santos. I'm not sure why he's not start for whatever teams he's on (I forgot, QPR? Tottenham?), but whenever I see him play for the Mexican National team he's awesome. I think he's better than Chicharito. I realize we need defenders more, but with the Russian Smurph's lost form, Walcott's inconsistency, Gervinho's lack of finishing and Dos Santos seems, to me, at least, to be a great buy. Discuss.
TST Fantasy Football
What do I get for winning the TST Fantasy Football league? Granted, Van took third and he stopped playing somewhere around week 5... I need me some more STL Rams stuff for when it becomes vintage ...
What I noticed (or didn't notice) at Candlestick Park yesterday.
I apologize but I totally forgot to bring my camera, and my phone takes lousy pictures so I've got nothing.
1. Billy Devaney and (separately) Kevin Demoff were both on the sidelines chatting during pregame. I am not sure why, but I didn't expect them to be at an away game. Maybe they are making a show of not giving up and are evaluating the roster talent. Billy Devaney is really short.
2. The young CB's seemed to be the most interested in playing. They had energy and enthusiasm. On this team, that really stood out.
3. Jerious Norwood is really skinny. No wonder he's always hurt.
4. Dominique Curry is bigger than I thought.
5. With one notable exception, Steven Jackson looks just about as big as his linemen.
6. That one notable exception is Harvey Dahl. That dude is a goon (and I mean that in a good way).
7. The offense had no passion from the get go.
8. The defense is a pretty good unit. They need help on the other side of the ball. This is nothing new, just worth repeating.
9. Craig Dahl was mostly awful.
10. I never noticed Robert Quinn.
11. In real life, the balls that hit our WR's in the hands and they still drop are even more embarrassing than when watching them on TV.
12. The Niner fans didn't believe me when I called the Brit Miller run on 3rd and 1. Pity from the Niners fans is the worst kind of pity. I had plenty of it nonetheless. I'd rather fight.
13. I noticed a 260 pound kid (Aldon Smith) crush a 300 lb man (Adam Goldberg). Aldon Smith is pretty good, but I can't give him credit when Goldberg is quite simply, horrible.
14. I did not notice Danario Alexander except for the one deep incomplete.
15. I did not notice Lance Kendricks.
16. I heard Chris Long had a good game, but his work was mostly on the far side of the field from me.
17. Quentin Mikell was pointing to Crabtree right after the snap of the ball on the TD pass.
18. The Rams defensive gameplan seemed to be "Don't let Frank Gore beat us. Make Alex Smith beat us." Alex Smith looked average most of the game, but the pass to Crabtree was beautiful and other than that, average was more than enough to overcome the 0 points we scored.
19. I can't count more than 2 times we were in Niner territory all game. Was there more?
20. I noticed Steven Jackson standing alone on the sideline in the second quarter, clean. That's just not right.
21. I saw Steven Jackson standing next to Sam Bradford (nobody else around) on the sideline in the fourth quarter talking. Jackson had his helmet on. The Rams were on offense. I'd pay $100 to hear that conversation.

Who's going to the Rams game in SF?
I will be there, visitor's side, 10 yard line, 5 rows back. Who else will be there? I'm trying to think of something clever to put on a sign regarding Spags but so far, nothing good comes to mind.
ESPN's John Clayton Tweets ...
Rams backup QB AJ Feeley took a $1 million paycut to stay with the Rams last week. He now makes $1.3 million. ...interesting. I had not heard that before. http://twitter.com/intent/user?screen_name=ClaytonESPN
Oxale-Chamberlain ...
... or however it is spelled. I've only seen one game of his (U21 England vs Israel) but holy crap! Why isn't he starting for Arsenal (talk about a creative attacking mid)? When will we sell him? I thought this guy was awesome. Thoughts?
Week 1 Philly game on Fox in Sacramento!!
It's gonna be weird to be able to legally see a Rams game that doesn't also have the Niners in it. w00t!!
The Rams, Stan Kroenke and ... Arsenal
This post is mostly for 3K ... and/or any European soccer fan. The Rams had seemed to be penny pinchers for years (except when they spent foolishly). Stan comes in and they spend wisely, but not big. Now to Arsenal. Arsenal has (had) some good young talent yet still lacked a big player or two. Now they lose their captain Fabregas (get off my team you whiner) and maybe they lose Nasri as well? WTF? ... and no transfer in to balance out the loses? I was hoping for a Wesley Sneijder to replace Cesc ... but nothing ... Does this have anything to do with Kroenke? ... I love Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott but we need something else. Maybe a Philip Lahm or Dani Alves type of outside back. Maybe I don't know enough about top notch soccer. Maybe I should join an Arsenal blog instead ... Go Bayern Munchen!!?
Virus?
I'm getting a virus warning when I visit TST today. Something new going on that my comp doesn't recognize? Anyone else experiencing this?
Most holes filled at least adequately?
Is it just me, or did we fill a bunch of holes? I might be overreacting, but it sure seems like we are clearly the best team in the NFC West now and likely ready to win a playoff game or two (barring major injuries). I'm generally a skeptic so let's discuss.
Uniform History
Not sure if this is old or what, but it is pretty interesting for those that haven't seen it yet. http://www.uniwatchblog.com/2011/05/17/fantastic-interview-with-former-rams-equipment-manager-todd-hewitt/
Football transcends boundaries.
One thing I have always loved about football (and sports in general) is the way it transcends social and economic barriers. On Sunday, a rich Rams fan and a poor Rams fan could commiserate in the stands, a white Rams fan and a black Rams fan could both be awed by Steven Jackson while watching the game in a bar, a Catholic mother and an agnostic father could relive the great comeback by Sam Bradford on Monday morning.
Regardless of background, Rams fans were a part of a family of sorts.
Granted, we'd still always beat the hell out of a PhoneyWhiner fan, but that's beside the point.
I sure don't like how this CBA issue has brought out many of our irrelevant backgrounds. I've been pretty outspoken my disdain of the player's union (which sounds like I'm FOR the owners, but I'm mostly just against the union). I've heard others generally agree with my stance, and I've heard many disagree. We are all certainly entitled to our opinions.
I guess what I'm saying is ... this is starting to become too much like work and not nearly very fun.
I'd like to see us start being Rams fans again, and maybe let go of the politics.
I'm not sure this post will accomplish anything, but maybe it will.
I'd much rather argue with Ramchop about the ability to sign 20 pro-bowl free agents than argue with dbcouver about unions.

Are the Rams ready to trade picks?
While I know we have a lot of holes to fill still, I have been wondering if the Rams might actually be in a position to trade up in the draft. Here's my rationale: The Rams already have several projects. What they need are more 'right now' starters. That means, higher picks and established Free Agents. I know there are gems to be found in the later rounds; let other teams go fishing. We will not fill all the rest of our holes with 1 more draft/FA period. So instead of taking more flyers on late rounders, I think the Rams are ready to drop a 4th, 5th, 6th etc to move up in the earlier rounds. Maybe we don't see the trades until draft day, but I expect they will happen. Our current projects may or may not work out (Fendi, Sims, etc) but we don't have the luxury of continuing to fish. Thoughts?
Reading between the lines - What the McDaniels hiring really means.
After a few days of speculation and various opinions on the subject by fans and media alike, the St. Louis Rams have hired Josh McDaniels to be their Offensive Coordinator.
If you wanted him, great. If you didn't, too bad. He's here.
While there is some conjecture and some room for interpretation, the facts surrounding Josh McDaniels are still pretty clear.
He was a great offensive coordinator in New England. He was a terrible head coach in Denver. He does not fit the 4 Pillars philosophy both because of cheating (read: questionable ethics) and a pretty extreme sense of self importance (read: it is fair to question his motives. Will he buy into the team concept?). Is Josh McDaniels a risky hire? Maybe it was more risky to NOT hire him.
However, this is all beyond the scope of this post.
I want to talk about what the Rams' hiring of Josh McDaniels really means.

We need one of these FA's this offseason
Prior to the draft, Billy Devaney MUST get one of these three FA's even if he has to overspend. Logan Mankins, Sidney Rice, Vincent Jackson. Any one of those players gives us at least 2 more wins by themselves. Adding other lesser profile FA's and drafting well is also mandatory, but one of those three are must haves.
Rams go Prime Time!!
@Adam_Schefter St. Louis at Seattle game on Sunday, January 2 will be played at 8:20 PM ET
What's our injury report like?
I'm most interested in how Bradford is (he looked a little dazed after that hit but maybe he was just mad) and also if DX's need swelled up or is he ok? Plus, Uh-Oh and anybody else.
Simple key to Week One
I'm not sure who will win, but I think the Rams' gameplan should be pretty simple. Arizona will be trying to rattle Bradford. However, he's not actually the key this week. If we are patient on offense, run the ball with SJ and be cautious with our rookie QB, Derek Anderson WILL screw up. Various blitz packages will wreak havoc on inconsistent Derek Anderson and we will benefit. Just on a whim, I will guess on a 16-10 Rams victory. Thoughts?
TST Fantasy League already defunct?
What happened with our TST Fantasy Football league? The draft failed because not enough people were signed up. Are we done or do we cut the no-shows and draft anyway? I'm surprised I've seen no word of it on here.
