Daily Norseman Interesting article on the 0-Line

from football outsiders: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/extra-points/2009/what-we-did-our-holidays

My comp keeps locking up when I try to post that as a link, so maybe someone can convert it.  Basically it's about a trip a couple of the FO guys took to NFL films.  Among other things, they reviewed the performance of the Vike's offensive line, not just against Carolina, but throughout the year.

Their conclusion:  The offensive line kind of sucks, especially in run blocking, and particularly on the left side of the line.  That's something that a number of members here have speculated about to varying degrees, but few of us have the opportunity to do this kind of film review.

Not good news, and something we either need to get better at quickly, or figure out how to overcome.

Daily Norseman Fun fact

There are currently 32 quarterbacks in the NFL who have thrown more interceptions this year than Favre has.

There are currently 41 quarterbacks in the NFL who have fumbled the ball more times this year than Favre has.

There are only 31 other teams.

I just thought that was worth noting, and hope that I can get in the required number of words before the jump; I forgot what the requirement is.  (whoops - but now I know).

Daily Norseman The perfect storm

(This is intended as a bit of fun speculation, not to be taken TOO seriously.  At least not yet.)

An upgrade at quarterback - that's what the Vikings expected when they signed Favre.  Somebody who could provide a little leadership and veteran knowledge, someone who could provide a little better passing game and maybe help to keep defenses honest.

Daily Norseman You know what? This could be a really big game.

And not so much for the most touted reason, which is Favre vs. the Packers.  Although I think that's kind of a big thing, and will certainly get a lot of attention, I still believe the real drama on that front awaits in week 8, when we go to Lambeau.  THAT is going to be emotional, particularly for Brett.

Daily Norseman An encouraging statistic

Favre's career record when his team runs more than it passes:

60-2.  That includes 4 and 0 last year with the Jets.

Those of you who didn't follow the Jets closely last year may not be aware that the last 5 game meltdown, after Favre hurt his arm (and the Jet's brass was aware of that), was also a time when the Jet's play calling became inexplicably pass happy, after they had built their 8-3 record largely on a balanced offense.

The most notable games in that stretch were the Miami game, in which they threw 41 times and ran 21 times (averaging 4 yards per carry), and the 49ers game, in which they threw 31 times and handed off only 11 (and averaged over 5 yards per carry).  They never trailed by more than a TD in the Miami game and were tied or within a TD until late in the 4th quarter in the SF game.

I'm guessing that kind of play selection is not going to happen with AP on the field.
