I'm a Vanderbilt PhD-seeking Chemical and Physical Biology student. I was born into the Royals and listened to Bob Uecker on the radio for the Brewers while living in Wisconsin for 14 years, then lived in Minnesota during undergrad at St. Olaf College before graduating and moving down to Nashville. I love Royal blue, hate Yankee and Cubbie jerks, love open-air baseball yet miss the Homer Dome, am undecided about getting to watch former Royals draftee Jason Esposito rake on a regular basis, miss Minnesota and Minnesotans, and spend most of my time in lab thinking about baseball.

On the day I was born, the Royals beat the Yankees 13-1 30 miles down the road. I was born for it.

Royals baserunners use unique cast on one hand

1

I first ran onto this on ESPN (at the bottom of the article), but the good folks at UniWatch did a rundown (and interview with Pods) on the interesting cast that Pods, Getz, and some of the Royals batters wear when on the basepaths. It's pretty interesting.

Reliever Juan Cruz is having season-ending shoulder surgery today. He was cut by the Royals earlier this season. He's got a cyst in his shoulder, and will have that cleaned up. He should be ready for winter ball.

At this point, it's hard to tell what's up with Gil Meche (0-4, 8.24 ERA). Royals blogger Rany Jazayerli contends that Meche has been mishandled and pitched out by Hillman, but one scout who's seen a lot of Meche doesn't think it's a question of health or a dead arm. "He's throwing as hard as he did at any time last year, and there's the same crispness to his offspeed pitches, but he can't locate anything," the scout said. "He has a little 'stab' when he brings his arm back, and sometimes when guys have a little funkiness in their arm action and their rhythm is off a little bit, they really scuffle. If their timing isn't right, the command just isn't there."

It's Dane Iorg's 60th birthday! Happy Birthday, Iorg, and thanks for keeping us alive in the World Series! Now, let's all take this day to think about the 1985 season (use this and this if necessary) and reflect on how wonderful it was without any thoughts of any more recent seasons that might be less enjoyable.

From the new ESPN Insider article about Farnsworth being a badass: "And therein lies a tale. To his peers, Farnsworth the legend is even bigger and scarier than Farnsworth the pitcher. Thanks to a couple of epic on-field brawls, a penchant for pumping iron and a reserved personality, he's become a bullpen hybrid of Paul Bunyan, Doc Holliday and Keyser Soze. This much is true: Farnsworth will fight you. The Affeldt tackle and his 2003 demolition of Reds pitcher Paul Wilson (keep reading) prove it. And yes, he'll throw at you if he thinks you have it coming. In a 2008 game, when Farnsworth was with the Yankees, a Red Sox hurler plunked Alex Rodriguez. Next night, Farnsworth buzzed a 95 mph heater past Manny Ramirez's ear, drawing a suspension." And about his fighting training: "Even when he's brawling. After the 2008 season, he trained in MMA-style "ground-fighting," learning submission holds and techniques similar to jiujitsu. His martial arts experience goes way back. As a skinny 15-year-old in Roswell, Ga., Farnsworth took up tae kwon do to improve his strength and flexibility and quickly worked his way up to black belt. He briefly considered moving to Colorado to pursue an Olympic dream, but he believed he had more long-term potential in baseball and gave up fighting (officially sanctioned fighting, anyway) after he dinged his pitching hand in a bout."

Bloomquist vs. LHPs: .269/.332/.356 Maier vs. LHPs: .285/.377/.392 I guess when you add in Bloomquist's superior fielding skills in center, he gets the advantage. (Insert sarcasm there)

Pirates and Royals should switch spots - by Poz

19

I don't want to bogart the Fanshots, but this one caught my eye. Poz argues for the Pirates and Royals to switch spots for several reasons, such as: Interleague play has worn down league barriers anyway. The AL doesn't fit KC anymore because of the lack of connections to the other AL Central teams and of an AL "footprint." Pittsburgh and KC both need something to spark the cities' denizens to be interested in baseball again. Begin debate.

Great coverage of the Royals system on Fangraphs

Royals claim Jai Miller from the A's. He fills Fields' vacant 40-man spot on the roster while playing at Omaha. He was claimed by the A's from the Marlins earlier this year. Seems to have bad plate discipline. He's 25, though, so there's some time for improvement. Brief stats rundown: At AAA Albuquerque in 2008: .267/.349/.472 with a .39 BB/K At AAA New Orleans in 2009: .289/.360/.510 with a .36 BB/K In 10 games with AAA Sacramento this year: .118/.189/.118 with 19 K's and 3 BB's.

Montgomery is moving up to NWA: "There has been no official announcement or roster move, but it appears that Royals No. 1 prospect Mike Montgomery will be promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas in time for his next start, scheduled for Friday." That's from an article on Baseball America about Hosmer starting off strong. Montgomery was pitcher of the week in the Carolina League. Also, Moustakas and Osuna won the Texas League player and pitcher of the week awards.

Farnsworth poses shirtless for ESPN

4

Jeff jumped the gun on the fighting poll. ' "Supposedly, ESPN went around asking a bunch of players who was the (last) person they would want to see in a bench clearing brawl," said a smiling Farnsworth. "And I guess I won." That’s why, Farnsworth said, he was posing shirtless in the Royals’ bullpen on Friday in a photo shoot for an upcoming edition of ESPN the Magazine.' ... "The Royals’ reliever gained his reputation in 2003 when, as a member of the Chicago Cubs, he speared Cincinnati Reds pitcher Paul Wilson to the ground after Wilson yelled at him from the batters box because of an inside pitch."

On the possibility of JoGui being traded midseason: "...we're talking about a man who ranks in the top 3 in the American League in batting, slugging, homers, multi-hit games, total bases, hits and runs scored. And it's the last year of his contract, so he'll be eminently available (with about $4 million left as he approaches the trading deadline). But we've mentioned his name to a bunch of baseball executives. We haven't heard anybody even sound mildly interested -- even though the Royals no doubt would swallow most of that money. "I don't know," one of those execs said. "He's fallen off defensively. He can be pitched to. He's a little bit of an unstable force on a club. … So he'd have to continue to hit [laughs] -- and hit a lot." " Looks like it may not be easy to get much for JoGui this year. May be a lost cause.

Gaby Hernandez no-hits Sounds for 6 innings

I see a potential reliever here: "Hernandez made his second start of the season and he threw no-hit ball for six innings. As the pitches piled up (he threw 84 pitches), his command went away and it became evident that he wasn't going the distance."

2

I blame Dayton Moore for building this craptastic bullpen and I blame Trey Hillman for failing to figure out how to put his pitchers in the best situation to succeed. The losers here? Us. Most of us have stuck with this team through thin and thin the last 20-plus years. We deserve better than this. I wish I could offer some encouraging words and tell you there is some promise on the horizon. That things are looking up. But I can’t. My advice is to stock up on your drink of choice. It’s going to be a cruel summer.

Teahen has a good night

7

"Last night was a night to remember for Mark Teahen. Forget the box score – Teahen went 3-5 with a triple, a home run, a run scored, 3 RBIs, and a SB – it was the way Teahen refused to let the White Sox lose last night that made Monday, April 12, 2010 against the Toronto Blue Jays a career night for the veteran of five seasons. ...with a flyout to center field and a force out to second. At that point, Teahen’s WPA for the night stood at -.059.... The triple earned Teahen another +.329 WPA, bringing his game total up to a whopping +.765."
