Just because we need something to laugh about during this frustrating season

Just for fun, I played with FanGraph's WAR graph tool for a few minutes tonight. For those of you not familiar with it, it allows you to compare any number of players by WAR totals over the course...

1970 Scouting Report on Dick Allen

In light of the recent sharing of Jimmy Rollins' HS scouting report, here is something much, much funnier (read: more horrifying). Click for lulz.

Jim Caple on the Silliness of Saves

An interesting piece that points out that managers--though maybe not, as he claims, every manager--do employ sub-optimal strategy when it comes to bullpen usage. Especially relevant in light of last night's stupid ridiculous mess.

Jamie Moyer Signs with the Orioles

And is scheduled to start Saturday for AAA Norfolk. This effectively ensures we won't see him pitch this season, with the the only remaining possibility for doing so being in the World Series. And oh, what stories would be written by gifted journalists about that!

Kerry Wood Retires

A really nice tribute to Kerry Wood over at Fangraphs. I always liked the guy, and I remember him throwing that really nasty slider time and time again when the Cubs would play the Phils. I also remember watching footage of his 20-strikeout rampage and not believing such a thing could be possible. Godspeed, Mr. Wood.

Mariano Rivera Tears his ACL and Meniscus, Possibly Ending his Career

I hate the the Yankees as much as the next guy, but this really sucks, especially considering the career the guy has had. What a way to go out. Other POI: It seems like there's been an unusually high number of injuries to closers this season. Rivera joins a list including Joakim Soria, Brian Wilson, Ryan Madson, Sergio Santos, Andrew Bailey, Drew Storen, and Kyle Farnsworth, and we're barely a month into the season. Please stay healthy, Paps.

Jamie Moyer is Officially the Oldest Pitcher to Ever Win a Game

And he looked damned fine doing it. 7 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, throwing 54 of 87 pitches for strikes. He even picked Chris Denorfia off of first in the 2nd inning. Through the first three starts of his age 49 season, he's got a 2.55 ERA. I didn't think it was possible to love him more than I already did, but he's made it happen.

Rangers GM Bothered by Josh Hamilton's Unwillingness to Grant "Hometown Discount"

I thought this was appropriate to call attention to, considering the recent (and, in the latter two cases, ongoing) contract-related tribulations involving Jimmy Rollins, Cole Hamels, and Shane Victorino. This PR war has the same sort of feel as the one present throughout the Rollins negotiations, except it's more public, less intelligent, and less respectful. Rube and Young James, to their credit, mostly refrained from negotiating in public, though the WIP crowd certainly had their say.

Yankees agree to terms with Raul Ibanez

So long, Rauuuul. Thanks for the memories. And the compensation pick.

Bud Selig Offered Contract Extension

When asked for comment, Selig said, "I am honored that Major League Baseball would allow me the opportunity to continue to ruin it for an additional two years."

Pat Burrell Likely to Retire

If so, this would be a mildly sad day for me and a lot of other people who look back (mostly) fondly on his days with the Phightins.

Ryan Madson: Overlooked Casualty of the Hunter Pence Deal?

Hunter Pence is a Phillie. While the Delaware Valley sorts out whether His Smugness overpaid for Pence (There is a preponderance of arguments both for and against, although the most reasonable...
