Liverpool are to announce the creation of a "technical committee" of "football people" in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the transfer deadline day debacle that led to the club allowing Andy Carroll to go out on loan without a replacement striker being signed.

Bologna sell Gaston Ramirez to Southhampton for fee of €15 million

+

"Southampton have had a bid of €15 million accepted for Bologna winger Gaston Ramirez, beating off competition from Liverpool and Tottenham." To think, we could of had Ramirez for €15 million. Seems like a reasonable and doable price tag.

Cole will return to Liverpool

+

It looks like Joe Cole will be getting a second chance to prove himself with Liverpool in the Premier League next season. Lille's coach, Rudi Garcia, confirmed today that new LFC manager Brendan Rodgers "has decided that Cole will be part of his plans for next season." Rodgers and Cole have a history together going back to their overlapping years at Chelsea (where Rodgers was the reserve team manager) when Jose Mourinho was in charge.

Reds report £50m loss

16

On the heels of the report that Liverpool are the 5th highest spending Premier League team when it comes to player-wages, today LFC announced a loss of a staggering £50 million over the course of this past year. This comes as a gut wrenching development (although not a complete surprise) for us Liverpool fans who are still trying to wash the taste of the Hicks and Gillette dictatorship out of our mouths. What makes this even worse is how it reminds us how the amount of money spent on players this year has not, in any way, translated to on-pitch performance.

Liverpool Fifth Most Costly Premier League Side

+

When it rains, it pours... As if that embarrasingly atrocious display against Fulham yesterday (and the downward trajectory Liverpool's season has taken) wasn't enough, the list of the highest-paying teams in the world has come out and Liverpool are the 18th highest paying sports institution in the world (up two spots and 6% from last year). I probably don't have to explain why this is highly distressing but you should go read what Noel from Liverpool's The Offside blog has to say about it.

Flyers Hunting for New Goalie

3

The Fourth Period is saying that the Flyers are "actively scouring the trade market for a No. 1 goaltender" as the trade deadline looms. Sergei Bobrovsky and James van Riemsdyk are the possible chips the Flyers would be willing to part with. The article mentions Nikolai Khabibulin, Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Ondrej Pavelec as potential targets.

What a mess. I thought we would all start to be able to finally move on from this but now it looks like it is going to drag on even longer. I just really hope this isn't true...

City reject Carroll-Tevez swap proposal

3

Yes, seriously, you read that correctly. Surprisingly, Liverpool actually asked about swapping Carroll for Tevez. Honestly, it's not a deal I would expect LFC to propose at all but, financially, it makes sense. There is no way any team in Europe is going to pay £35 million for Andy Carroll. He has no market value. Tevez, on the other hand, is a proven game changer but he has also proven that he is a training room cancer. It would be a pretty low risk move: Dump the failed experiment that is Andy Carroll, squeeze as much football as possible out of Tevez before he goes AWOL and then flip him to Italy, PSG or anyone for a decent amount of money (even if it's not the full £35 mil they paid for AC, I'd say getting back £25-30 for Tevez would be a success considering how huge a failure AC has been and the fact that they are never going to be able to recoup their losses on him, otherwise). Obviously City were never going to accept that but it was worth a try.

Reds to bring in Portuguese youngster, Joao Teixeira

Reports say that Liverpool paid a mere £1 million for the highly rated 19 year old attacking midfielder who impressed during the NextGen series.

Uh oh. Hopefully this doesn't turn into a lingering issue and Giroux can get back on the ice asap.

Flyers Announce Opening Night Roster

After yesterday, not really any surprises here, just confirmation that the line up is set, if for only one game at least.

This picture was tweeted by Insua along with this: "Obrigado al Sporting de Lisboa por el esfuerzo hecho y la confianza puesta en mi!!" For those non-Spanish speakers (like myself) here is a rough translation: "Thanks to Sporting Lisbon for the effort and the confidence placed in me!" It seems like the young fullback has made the switch to Portuguese giant Sporting Lisbon. Until the move is announced officially by the clubs, there is no word on whether it is a permanent switch or another loan. Insua leaving Liverpool isn't a surprise. The surprise is that this move came out of no where and was completely under the radar. I had completely forgotten about Insua until his tweet popped up in my feed. Considering that Insua is ony 22, has showed promise, I'd love for this move to be just a loan and to see Insua return to Anfield after gaining more experience in Portugal. Whatever the details, good luck to the young Argentine. It will be good to see him getting first team minutes with a top team. UPDATE: It seems as though the transfer is a permanent move, not just a transfer

Valencia confirm Mata to join Chelsea

5

So much for the "Mata is going nowhere" crap we heard all summer. It cost Chelsea "around €30 million" to pry Mata away from Valencia, so depending on how Mata plays this season with Chelsea and if Stewart Downing can continue to improve on his solid play thus far, it may dull the sting of losing out on Mata. Not to mention that it may make Downing look like a bargain.

Reviewing Liverpool’s Transfer Signings for the 2011-12 Season

4

So, most of you around here at AA know that I have been less then enthused about Liverpool's signings thus far. I have been skeptical of the players they have brought in and the money being paid for them. However, I stumbled upon this piece over at EPL Talk and wanted to make sure I shared it because, in my opinion, it goes a long way in showing the logic and quality behind our three major signings. (...my pessimism is starting to bud into optimism here, people)

EXCLUSIVE: Wilshere and Carroll are OUT of the England U-21 squad

1

This is brilliant news for Liverpool. Carroll has looked somewhat out of sorts for most of his time thus far at Liverpool thanks largely to that nagging thigh injury. So, instead of taking part in the tournament in Denmark, Carroll will continue to work on his conditioning at Anfield. The young striker should be in wonderful form come August and ready to terrorize Premier League defenders. Just what we'll need if we want to win the Premier League next season.

Habs fans shifting support to Flyers

+

Remember our old buddy, Mike Boone? Canadiens columnist for the Montreal Gazette who, back on April 12th, 2010, claimed that the Flyers were comparable to Hitler's 1936 Olympic team. Well, ironically enough, Boone is now talking about how the Canadiens fans are becoming Flyers fans for their Round 2 match-up with the Bruins. Oh, so now it's okay to root for "Hitler's team" in hopes that they might go "all S.S." on the Bruins? Dude needs to make up his mind.

Led by center Ryan Kesler, Vancouver's second line is one of the best in the NHL. The loss of checking-line stalwart Manny Malhotra, though, puts the Canucks at a big disadvantage—even with Maxim Lapierre at his best—against Philadelphia, whose stellar third line is nearly as good as its first, thanks to players such as Kris Versteeg (above). Vancouver has the edge in goal, where Roberto Luongo is having one of his finest seasons. But the Blackhawks proved last year that a balanced club can overcome shaky goaltending and win a Cup. Flyers in six.

- Sports Illustrated, April 11 In their NHL Playoffs Preview, Sports Illustrated picked the Flyers to win the Cup, defeating the Capitals in the ECF and the Canucks in the Stanley Cup Finals. I guess nobody at SI has actually been watching hockey recently.

Unclaimed Zherdev getting a new start

Now, wait just a minute! After a "heart-to-heart talk" with Lavi and Homer, it looks like they want to give Zherdev a fresh start, meaning he might be back in the fold for the Flyers. (As per Sam Carchidi)
