Join the Kansas Speedway and NASCAR Unites in building 35 homes for Joplin tornado victims
When the EF-5 tornado struck Joplin, Mo. in May last year, NASCAR drivers (including Jamie McMurray, who is from Joplin) were active in supporting the community and helping rebuild Joplin. Now, fans have a chance to continue that work alongside their favorite players.
The Kansas Speedway and NASCAR Unites, along with with Misouri sports teams, are taking the Governor's Joplin Challenge with the Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity. Each team will have its own neighborhood to build homes for tornado victims to purchase, and in total the project should result in 35 new homes for families in Joplin.
Now, here's where the fans can help:
- Register to volunteer to build homes in Joplin. When you sign up, pick your favorite team and you'll get to work alongside your favorite athletes. You can sign up multiple times if you'd like to work with multiple teams as well. Specific work dates haven't been announced yet, but they will be available soon. Volunteer here.
- Donate money or in-kind goods to the Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity. You can donate through your favorite team(s) or by making a general donation that isn't tied to a specific team. Donations are made by secure connection through PayPal. Donate here.
- Spread the word. Like the Facebook page for the Challenge and spread the work on Twitter using #JoplinChallenge.
This is a great opportunity to help the people in Joplin, and thanks to everyone for pitching in!

Mizzou coaches react to DGB signing
Behind-the-scenes look at the football coaches reacting to DGB's announcement. Pretty clear they were in the dark, just like the rest of us.
Pinkel admitted he didn't watch and instead hung out in office and "waited for the screams."
"The one thing that gets lost is we're in this predicament because the SEC invited Missouri," Neinas said. "But the SEC was willing to play with 13 [rather than 14] next season. We made an offer to Missouri that was financially beneficial to stay for another year. Missouri made the decision not to accept.
"We had a teleconference call with those in the SEC, Big East, ACC, Mountain West and Conference USA. We all agreed we could save money and avoid litigation if all held serve for 2012-13. All agreed. But Missouri made a very selfish decision. It's been very disruptive. Missouri gave us notice in November [of 2011] and it's pretty difficult to move forward then."
Well, that's one way to interpret Mizzou's decision to leave the SEC...saying that "we made Mizzou an offer, but they turned us down because they're selfish" kinda misses the whole point of why Mizzou is leaving in the first place. It shouldn't take a threat of leaving to earn equality.

MU/kU Commercial Shoot (Facebook Event)
In case anyone is available the morning of Thursday, Jan. 26 at 9 a.m., we'll be shooting a commercial featuring Missouri sports fans at Mizzou Arena. We're looking for fans of ALL Missouri sports (Tigers, Chiefs, Royals, Cardinals, Rams, Blues and NASCAR) to wear shirts for their favorite Missouri team.
The commercial will air at halftime of the Missouri-kansas basketball game on Feb. 4 on the jumbotron, and will be posted online later as well. I can't get into really any more details at this point (more will be available tomorrow morning at the shoot), but I can promise that a) this will be an awesome thing to be a part of, and b) it's being done for an outstanding cause.
Hit the link for more details, and please spread the word. Really want a lot of fans there for this, and I know I can count on RMN to come through!
Mizzou basketball tickets available for $5.
Upper level tickets for Mizzou's basketball game against Northwestern St. are available for $5. Tickets can be purchased in-person at the Mizzou Arena Ticket Office, or by calling 1-800-CAT PAWS (884-PAWS in mid-Missouri).
Great idea by the Mizzou athletic department, and if they can swing it, I'd even like to see them lower prices for other non-conference games as well in an attempt to get people hooked and build a buzz before conference play begins. Unless people start showing up more...in which case, obviously don't lower the prices at all.
If this doesn't motivate people to head to Mizzou Arena...
Wear BLACK this Saturday for the Border War
Per the Mizzou Athletic Dept., everyone is encouraged to wear black this weekend for the kansas game at Arrowhead.

Nice get for Team Haith. Was originally committed to Louisville, so safe to assume Fuller played a big role in this one. 3-star small forward, according to Rivals.

Richardson reneges, commits to USC
Vahe Gregorian reports Big Sheldon will stay out west. Guessing Sheldon thinks this his clearest route to the NFL. Big loss for the Tigers, to be sure...but at this point, it's best to just have it be done, and I really wonder if a guy this flaky would be a good fit for the Tigers.
Gabe also confirms this story.
Update: Or maybe there's some wiggle room? Of course there is...
Ken Pomeroy projects 10-6 conference record for Tigers, 23-7 overall
Take a look at the complete schedule here. Keep in mind, the projected record is based on cumulative probabilities of winning each game and may not equal the individual game predictions. (In Mizzou's case, it doesn't equal...the individual game projections give the Tigers at 12-4 conference record and 25-5 overall.)
Here's what jumped out to me. Rankings are according to Ken Pomeroy's system.
Key wins
- 73-71 vs no. 11 Georgetown (Neutral)
- 77-69 vs no. 38 Vanderbilt (Home)
- 76-72 vs no. 8 kansas State (Home)
- 75-72 vs no. 7 Baylor (Home)
- 74-73 vs no. 3 kansas (Home)
Projections says Mizzou goes undefeated at home, including three wins over top-10 teams.
Key losses
- 71-70 vs no. 9 Illinois (Neutral) - First loss of the season
- 71-70 vs no. 35 Texas A&M (Road) - First conference loss
- 73-70 vs no. 17 Texas (Road) - Really? Could happen, but I like our chances here.
- 77-70 vs no. 3 kansas (Road)
- 77-72 vs no. 8 kansas State (Road)
So of our five "projected losses", all are away from home and all are close (three are one-possession games). Three are against top-10 opponents, two of which are on the road.
Pomeroy gives the Tigers 0% chance of finishing undefeated, and 0.03% chance of sweeping the Big 12. (So you're telling me there's a chance...)
The projections give the conference championship to kansas, with Mizzou finishing fifth, I think (loss to Texas gives the Longhorns the tiebreaker and a first-round bye in the Big 12 tournament).
How accurate do you think this is? Would you be happy with this season?
"I remember when Laurence Bowers came to our basketball team," Anderson said, "This guy is a highlight waiting to happen.
"Well we’ve got highlight No. 2,"Anderson said, "and that’s going to be Phil Pressey."

Fangraphs: Royals to part ways with Jose Guillen
"I’ve seen comments saying that this move has come a little too late, but that misses the point that it’s a move that shouldn’t have been necessary in the first place. There were zero indications that Guillen would produce value remotely approaching his contract. It was a foolish contract signing from the beginning, and the Royals realized nothing from it. His time in Kansas City resulted in -1.2 WAR. If players were compensated with WAR Dollars, he’d owe the club $5.9 million."
Don't worry guys, I'm sure Guillen already put the check in the mail...
