Amazin' Avenue An Open Letter to the New York Mets Regarding Ralph Kiner on his 50th Anniversary with the Organization

(Bumped from FanPosts. -- James)

---

I have been a Mets fan for many years--as it is, most of my natural life. During this time I have witnessed many highs and many lows. Many fantastic players and games, and many times that would have tested the mettle of any fan. Through all of this, it has become clear that being a Mets fan requires a certain joy in the game no matter what happens, a certain humility about the inevitable loss, and a certain appreciation of fleeting victory. Baseball is not a sport that lends itself to screaming, but rather to watching, to learning, and to laughing at the foibles of what becomes your adopted family. And through the many years that I have followed this team in this town, Ralph Kiner has been an omnipresent and subtle, and much-appreciated, reminder that at the end of the day it's only a game, but during that day it's still something you ought to love and you ought to be knowledgeable and passionate about.

This is why the New York Mets ought to designate an area of Citi Field "Kiner's Korner", in recognition of what he has contributed to the idea of being a Mets fan, and the education he has given fans both about the game and about being a class act when pondering something that whatever happens, is, and always should be, enjoyable.

MookietheCat Returns to NYC...Briefly...And needs advice.

So I'm going to be in NYC for a couple of weeks at the end of May. As some know on here I left the states over a year ago to move to Africa. I'll be back in May for a friend's wedding (sadly he's a Phils fan, but strangely a decent human being who actually found a nice human being who also happens to be female who wants to marry him). I want to catch a game while I'm in North America and have options of the Pirates, Pods, or Phils at Citi Field. I don't care so much about the Mets winning or a rivalry game as I do about seeing an interesting matchup, and I was wondering which series the collective thinks I should get tickets for.

A gem. It took me a while to realize that it was satire. Or is it? In any event I thought this piece of writing was clutchy enough to share.

A Thought From One Without Internet (Very Much)

So I've been following the season when I can, but with the intertubes available only once or twice a month it's been a real scattershot affair. I remember before the season a lot of folks were predicting 80+ wins and if about 17 unlikely conditions all turned out to be true simultaneously, then 90 wins. Yet it seems that every time I log in another of those conditions has failed, and the team is--as could reasonably be expected--doing poorly. I guess my question is: has this surprised anyone, or was the optimism expressed preseason merely optimism for its own sake? Or am I missing something, and there's reason for hope in Flushing before 2012?

Amazin' Avenue Why I Love Amazin Avenue, and a Sayonara To All of You

Until tonight, I wanted to write a clever poem or something like that to get a lot of recs and thus show my appreciation for the community here. But thinking about it tonight I decided just to write a heartfelt thanks to Eric and the rest of the team for giving me a place to share in both my love of a baseball squadron and the folks who have collectively helped me to both support that love and deal with the disappointment that such squadron inevitably deals.

Sammy Sosa: Another Thing to Think About

A few weeks ago I was watching a show on MLB TV about the top ejections of all time. One of the ejections was for Sammy Sosa when he used a corked bat that shattered when he hit a ball. I remember in the pre-PED era when things like corked bats, doctored balls, etc. were just considered part of the game, and to those who got away with it went the victory. I was wondering what folks on here thought about this, given the questions about Sammy and PEDs.

This is a little something my pop made a few years ago. It hung in my house until I moved out of state; now it hangs in my old bedroom at my folks house. The ghostly image in the .jpg is pop taking a picture of it. Hope it brings back some good memories.

AA Meetup Reminder

So the votes are in and it looks like the meetup will be this Saturday, January 22, in the afternoon and on to the evening. Location is The Ginger Man at 11 East 36th Street in Manhattan. I'm thinking about getting there at about 4. Anyone want to get started earlier (I don't think later will be a problem)?

Probably because all of these occurred with runners on base in extras, thus showing that poor late-inning batting can foil even Jerry's well-laid plot to call the worst bunt of all time.

Big Blue View Green Bay-Minions of Zuul Sunday Wild Card Open Thread

I kinda wanted a place to watch the Green Bay-Philly game, so here it is. If Ed or someone sets up an official one we can all move over.

And this FanPost needs to be at least 75 words long so I'm writing this paragraph about nothing in particular and you know what my dogs like cheese. A lot. Any kind of cheese you can think of because cheese is good and pure and delicious and nutritious and doesn't poop on your head.

Amazin' Avenue Informal Meetup Poll Number 2: Date and Location.

So here's the second AA Informal January Meetup Poll. From responses to the last poll, I sense that there are two camps so far as time and date are concerned: those who would like the meetup on a Saturday afternoon/evening and those who would like it after work on a weekday. For the weekday I chose Thursday because it's a Thursday and more of a standard happy hour day than others. For location there were a number of good options thrown out there that are clustered in Midtown East/Murray Hill and in the West Village. I took a look at the websites for each, and have been to a few of them, and they all seem like good choices.  Once we all get a better sense of how many people to expect I might give the winner a call to give the manager a head's up if the group will be large, to see whether they usually have enough room to accommodate such a group, and to make a table reservation if it seems like a good idea. Also, if you're under 21 and really want to go let me know and I'll see if you can get in without drinking if and when I call the manager.

Poll
Vote for the date and time that you prefer.

Amazin' Avenue Informal Meetup Poll Number 1

I'm just trying to get a sense of how many people would be interested in coming to a meetup, and how many of those are under legal drinking age. Considerations of time and location will be based on the answers to this, primarily regarding bar size and whether it should be at a restaurant/bar or just a bar, so let me know what you think. The poll should be open until at least Monday so those who only check the site at work have a chance to be heard. Thank you for your participation.

Yeah I know that this is not a good FanPost, but there's no way that I know of to attach a poll to a FanShot, so I'm just working with what I got here. If anyone knows a way to attach multiple polls to a FanPost or some other thing, please let me know.

Poll
Would you at least try to attend a meetup in Manhattan near the end of this month?
Yes, I think it would be a good time and I'm of legal drinking age
21 votes
Yes, but I'm under 21
6 votes
No, because I live out of town or am afraid to leave the basement.
13 votes
No, I'm cool with not meeting any of you, but have a good time (h/t Rey-O)

Informal AA Meetup near the end of the month?

So I'll be back in NYC the 3rd and 4th weeks of January, as well as early February, and after a back and forth on some thread last night thought I'd propose an informal AA meetup then. I suggest a bar in Manhattan that has cheap drinks and no dress code, preferably in a basement so we all feel at home. Frankly, I'm curious to match nicks with names, and names with faces. Thoughts?

Amazin' Avenue Some Observations on Hall of Fame Voting Over The Past 70 Years

With all the talk about who should make it into the Hall of Fame this year, I decided to test an impression that I've had for years: that it was perhaps easier in past eras to make it into the Hall of Fame than more recently. I think the genesis of this thought arose while I was reading baseball books when I was a kid and saw some of the huge inductee classes of the 1930s and 1940s. Sadly, this is another time where the eyes did not get it right, but I found some of the trends that revealed themselves interesting. There are a few observations from that data, and from the history of Hall of Fame voting, that I thought I'd share. With Joe Pos, whose writing I generally think is up there among the best, stating that perhaps the Hall of Fame is too big nowadays, I think that what I've found might explain a few things about the manner of elections over the past few decades (ignoring for the moment that his article was likely satire). There are a couple of weaknesses in his argument, as are distilled below: the first being that modern standards for a 90% or 95% threshold would exclude every player inducted before the 1960s or 1980s, depending on which threshold is used, with the exception of Ruth, Cobb, Wagner, and maybe Christy Mathewson. It appears that in at least one sense when comparing Hall of Fame voting nowadays and in the distant past we are comparing apples and oranges.

And his last name is Simon. Coincidence?

Quoted from the site (hat tip to SagehenMacGyver47 of Royals Review for the link): "Wearable technology has finally hit the big leagues. Three engineering students from Northeastern University have developed a "data-logging" compression shirt that helps baseball pitchers avoid torn ligaments. The high-tech sheath, which is fitted with motion sensors and a web of conductive threads, tracks its wearer’s pitching mechanics during a game in real time, then relays that data to a monitor in the dugout. By analyzing the information, coaches can spot inconsistencies that could result in injury, whether as a result of fatigue or poor technique."

I just posted this over on Amazin Avenue, and I apologize for making anyone madder than they already are, but I hope that this is taken in the right way: as an expression of sympathy from one who has had to deal with Frenchy to many who will. But listening to the radio today I heard She's a Killer by Queen. This song clearly was written about Jeff Francoeur, as it applies to him in so many ways. Lines that apply:

"Well versed in etiquette, extraordinarily nice"
"Dynamite with a laser beam."
"Ooh, recommended at the price"
"To avoid complications, She never kept the same address"
"Perfume came naturally from Paris (naturally)"

And then this verse, which applies in its entirety:

"Drop of a hat she's as willing as
Playful as a pussycat
Then momentarily out of action
Temporarily out of gas
To absolutely drive you wild, wild..
She's all out to get you"

Free-lance writer Tom Keenan gets it exactly right, via giantsfootballblog.com. Admit that that sucked, talk about how much it sucked and grieve, note that Panthers fans are sympathizing now, and then get rational and talk about the team's chances, the big picture, and how lucky we are to be Giants fans.

The article is worth it for nothing more than this quote: "And we’ll have a shot at redemption again, because that is what sports is about. Failure. Redemption. Repeat."

Blogs versus MSM: Has Sandy Seen the New Inefficiency?

This evening as I was reading Matthew Callan's post about the difference between reality and assumption on the issue of PEDs and GMs, I had a thought: we follow a New York team, and New York retains some of the best and most varied traditional media in the world (if not especially thoughtful at times) yet the guys from the papers didn't do homework that a guy from a blog who does this basically for free did. I believe in a free market and that those who care will find the best source for information. Do folks think that Sandy has realized that the best way to approach NY is to deal with people who will analyze rather than react? If he does, it might serve him well, as my feeling is that the papers and radio guys have gotten lazy and complacent, and won't sift through information to get a story, but rather think "Canseco!! ZOMG" and without knowing make a fool of themselves.

A friend of mine who is an Eagles fan sent this to me. It fits firmly into the LOLWUT category either way you slice it. It's either the absolute worst Philly sports blog ever, or a hilarious and semi-surreal comedy tour through poor grammar and homerism. In any event it's worth a look.

Oh, NSWF for big, bold, misspelled profanity (actually, oddly, the profanity is the only part that's spelled correctly).

With Andy Reid's campaign to protect Vick, the question that this raises for me is whether Vick will now be treated differently from other ball-carriers. He's clearly one of the most mobile QBs in recent memory--and likely the most--so do folks think a double standard is being formed based on position at the snap, not actions afterward?

"On the bright side, Royals fans enjoy a victory in at least one sense: with both Francoeur and the man the Mets obtained from from Texas for him, Joaquin Arias, in the fold, and Omar Minaya no longer running the Mets, the Dayton Moore is probably the winner of the long, bitter struggle that was The Contest. There are always new challenges for a champion, of course, and Ruben Amaro (the Phillies were rumored to be pursuing Francouer at the Winter Meetings), Ned Colletti, and newcomer Mike Rizzo all could make formidable foes."

"One of the main reasons we were interested in him was, he re-grew the beard for the playoff run," Rizzo said. "And that's the most important reason...."

I couldn't make this quote up if I tried.

Apparently they failed to hit the deadline for a contract extension and some say the deal is in jeopardy, but some (including one writer on NESN), say the Sox should bring him in extension or no.
