Now That We've All Had A Good Night's Sleep: An Article That Puts All Of This Into Perspective

+

Free-lance writer Tom Keenan gets it exactly right, via giantsfootballblog.com. Admit that that sucked, talk about how much it sucked and grieve, note that Panthers fans are sympathizing now, and then get rational and talk about the team's chances, the big picture, and how lucky we are to be Giants fans. The article is worth it for nothing more than this quote: "And we’ll have a shot at redemption again, because that is what sports is about. Failure. Redemption. Repeat."

Blogs versus MSM: Has Sandy Seen the New Inefficiency?

This evening as I was reading Matthew Callan's post about the difference between reality and assumption on the issue of PEDs and GMs, I had a thought: we follow a New York team, and New York...

Ummmmm I just don't know what to say....

2

A friend of mine who is an Eagles fan sent this to me. It fits firmly into the LOLWUT category either way you slice it. It's either the absolute worst Philly sports blog ever, or a hilarious and semi-surreal comedy tour through poor grammar and homerism. In any event it's worth a look. Oh, NSWF for big, bold, misspelled profanity (actually, oddly, the profanity is the only part that's spelled correctly).

Cowboys' Anthony Spencer Fined $12,500 for Hit on Vick. Double Standard in the Works?

3

With Andy Reid's campaign to protect Vick, the question that this raises for me is whether Vick will now be treated differently from other ball-carriers. He's clearly one of the most mobile QBs in recent memory--and likely the most--so do folks think a double standard is being formed based on position at the snap, not actions afterward?

A sentiment we can all get behind.

With Frenchy United With Arias and Omar Gone, Fangraphs Announces End of The Contest

8

"On the bright side, Royals fans enjoy a victory in at least one sense: with both Francoeur and the man the Mets obtained from from Texas for him, Joaquin Arias, in the fold, and Omar Minaya no longer running the Mets, the Dayton Moore is probably the winner of the long, bitter struggle that was The Contest. There are always new challenges for a champion, of course, and Ruben Amaro (the Phillies were rumored to be pursuing Francouer at the Winter Meetings), Ned Colletti, and newcomer Mike Rizzo all could make formidable foes."

Why the Nationals Signed Werth: The Beard? Wait what?

12

"One of the main reasons we were interested in him was, he re-grew the beard for the playoff run," Rizzo said. "And that's the most important reason...." I couldn't make this quote up if I tried.

Update on Adrian Gonzalez: Red Sox Trade in Jeopardy?

4

Apparently they failed to hit the deadline for a contract extension and some say the deal is in jeopardy, but some (including one writer on NESN), say the Sox should bring him in extension or no.

Grienke Reportedly Willing to Accept Trade to Yankees?

"According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports....Greinke is open to going anywhere with a winning team." So much for anxiety and depression.

Metsivus. A Holiday For the Rest of Us.

Tonight TBS was kind enough to show the Seinfeld Festivus episode. As I watched I took some notes once it became clear that Festivus was pretty clearly a Mets fan holiday, if for nothing more...

May I Suggest Fix My 2003-04 Mets?

3

FanHouse has a column in which Steve Phillips is asked to fix various teams, in this case the Astros. While they are at it, why don't they ask Vince Coleman to teach firework safety or The Chipmunks to sing baritone? I also think that the small statue over his right shoulder represents the reaction of Mets fans to his time here.

FIP-xFIP Differential and Flyball Distance: Johan Eats Dying Quail for Dinner.

6

I've been arguing a lot recently, in the context of FIP and ERA, that looking at stats individually may cause you to miss details that looking at various stats together might reveal. Here is an interesting article by FanGraph's Jeff Zimmerman about xFIP and FIP: that deviations between from FIP to xFIP correlate--to a degree--to the average distance of fly balls allowed by that pitcher, with a higher positive deviation from FIP to xFIP indicating weaker fly balls (as you might expected due to xFIP's normalized HR component). Johan Santana is in the top 5 for starters (>160 IP) in this regard. What I'm more interested in, however, are the results of the questions for further study at the end, which might indicate whether this is really just a a matter of additional HRs or what.

Jason Bay: The Eyes Had It Right, Per Fangraphs.

49

Who had the second biggest drop in ISO from 2009-2010? Our own Jason Bay. As it is more interesting than continuing to whine about Bay, take a close look Bay's batted ball angle chart. He seems to have forgotten how to pull the ball to a significant degree. Any thoughts as to why that may be?

More on Bob Melvin

7

I have done my share of good-natured ribbing of Metsmerized, but this short post about Bob Melvin is pretty interesting. How did he manage 90 wins with the league's worst BA and OBP? Good food for thought.

It could be a lot worse...We could be Redskins fans (or DC radio hosts)...

3

Sorry for the link to Bleeding Green Nation, but as we're licking our wounds after the Cowboys loss I think this might make folks feel better. It is, simply said, the absolutely most incredible talk radio rant I have ever heard, by a Redskins fan. Just when you think it won't get any more ridiculous, it does.

A little request for help here. I'm currently working on a little spreadsheet getting into some of the business aspects of MLB teams, with the hope of an eventual FanPost. It's actually not so...

A little late, I know, but hilarious. Carl is not surprisingly a Yankee fan, and his Girardibot makes me laugh every time. Worth a watch even though the WS is fading into the past.

MoneyBART: The Simpsons Does Sabremetrics

21

I have lost a lot of faith in the Simpsons in the last few (10? 15?) years, but last night's episode on the tension between traditional and numbers-based baseball is a must-see. No spoilers here, but let's just say that the mom's-basement-dwellers among us will likely be happy overall. Double extra special A+ bonus for any fans of street art, as Banksy storyboarded and directed the opening sequence, which is remarkably harsh on the Simpsons.

Who ever thought that the phrase "die mauer" would cause the local MSM and the police to get involved. And it means "the wall" in German, and was a reference to the Berlin Wall. Thanks to Sideshow Bob and the folks at Twinkietown for this.
