Remember that guy we gave away for ...
Jarod Washburn? You know, that prospect we were all kicking ourselves for giving up at the trade deadline last year?
what have we given up with the 19th pick?
A lot has been made over the forfeiture of the Tiger's first round draft pick. In response to Rob Neyer's piece over at ESPN.com, one fan explained:
I think a straight overpay would be defensible, but giving up the 1st rounder hurts.
Certainly, anytime a team gives up a first round pick, it's going to sting a little bit. But how much of that sting is justified?
To explore this question, I combed through previous drafts and looked to see just what the 19th pick in the first round of the draft will get you:
2008, Cubs - Cashner, Andrew RHP
2007, Phillies - Savory, Joe P
2006, Marlins - Sinkbeil, Bret RHP
2005, Rangers - Mayberry, John RF
2004, Cardinals - Lambert, Chris RHP
2003, Diamondbacks - Jackson, Conor 3B
2002, Dodgers - Looney, James 1B
2001, Orioles - Fontenot, Mike 2B
2000, Pirates - Burnett, Sean P
Cashner and Jackson aside, I think this goes a long way in demonstrating how quick we are to overestimate what we've given up - with respect to prospects - to land a premier closer.

The only bad news, I suppose, is that it's only for the next two weeks (it's retroactive to the last time he pitched, June 27th) - but there is plenty of good news to find in this update that I think the above title is warranted.
I have never seen Fu-Te Ni pitch, but I don't think it's a stretch to assume that he will represent some sort of improvement.
