Canis Hoopus Good Touch, Bad Touch

340x_medium

Before I get started, a hat tip to Madison Dan, which got me thinking about this more.

To introduce this topic, I want to take a moment to discuss one of the smartest and most insightful players to ever play the game. His accolades include words like All-Star. And Champion. He introduced the concept of 'Big Three' to Boston long before KG and Ray ever arrived. He brought his talents, and a title, to South Beach years before LeBron. The only reason we talk about Michael Jordan as the greatest to play the game and not this man is "because there are no fours." That's right. I'm talking about the man, the myth, the legend: Antoine Walker. When I discuss good touches and bad touches, Antoine Walker was way ahead of his time in knowing the proper time and place. 'Toine took almost all of his shots either at the rim or from behind the arc. Easily the two most efficient spots on the floor. And that is what I want to look at with our Wolves. Are we applying 'Toine's logic? Or, despite threes being available as a shot selection, should TWolves players be asked why they're taking so many long twos?

At this point in time, I'd like to invite all readers to take a brief bathroom break or grab some food or refreshments. Once everyone is back in their seats, we'll reconvene after the jump. I hope you'll join us.

"Timberwolves have offered point guard Jonny Flynn in a package deal for swingman Andre Iguodala. Philadelphia officials, however, have let it be known that they are not interested in a salary-dump deal for Iguodala and want an impact veteran in return. "

In other news, Josh Smith is on the table (but has made a 'wishlist' of sorts).

Canis Hoopus It's that time of year again. My offseason plan!

My [hopefully] somewhat realistic scenario this year for our offseason. I don't know how the money will work out (probably won't), but this is the skeleton of my plan. The part I won't get into is that I also think we should get a new coach. But we all know that already!

Jordan and the bulls against Marbury, Garnett, and the Wolves. Inspired by the latest memories thread, I was lucky enough to find video of my own.

This is rebuilding basketball at it's finest. Marbury and Garnett gave me more to look forward to each game than Wade and LeBron could ever dream of doing. Too bad Marbury went crazy. Not only were they good, but they were absolutely fun to watch.

Some highlights from the video:
-First and foremost, notice the crowd. I don't remember what that feels like.
- Garnett picks Jordan perfectly and gets a monster stuff (after a foul, but still a great play)
- Stanley Roberts with a play that Darko could only dream of
- Marbury played one hell of a game
-Garnett with his oh-so-famous turnaround to clinch the game
-Marbury tossing the ball as the buzzer sounds (the truly memorable part of this game for me).

It focused on Artest's unspecified criticism on how the Timberwolves play defense. "They have a gimmick defense. It's hard to play them because they're a last place team and they're doing this gimmick defense. We're probably going to win anyway. They got this gimmick defense. I can't wait to get to the playoffs."

Read the rest of the article attached, there's also a video. It's an interesting read, as Artest always is. And there's only a little bit of crazy mixed in here and I'm not really sure what the context is for some parts (but it's Artest, so who knows). Mostly I just wanted to point out how we have a 'gimmick defense' and he plainly states that they don't care because they know they're going to win anyways.

Canis Hoopus Bargain Bin Acquisitions

Hey all, I was just looking at some box scores last night and noticed a couple guys who seemed to be in the 'dog house' or at least not getting much burn on their teams. I just thought I would point them out as guys I'd like for us to take a look at and that Kahn, with his much talked about reputation as a deal-hunter, would actually consider. Or at least that Glen might sign off on (that seems like poor grammar... 'off on'...).

As stunned coaches and teammates watched, Hamilton bellowed at Kuester that he had been a failure in his two seasons in Detroit, blown the opportunity the franchise afforded him and was nothing more than a career assistant coach, sources said. Despite Hamilton yelling within inches of him, Kuester didn’t respond.

And here I thought Hamilton was overpaid. Why didn't Kahn go after this man? He would have been my personal superstar.

Canis Hoopus Moving Targets

Well folks, the trade deadline is passed and it's official. We suck just as much as we did yesterday! Kahn has now bypassed his 5 Windows of Opportunity and we're moving onward into the stages of firing him, right? Wrong. Instead of holding him to his word and holding him accountable for one of the main reasons he got hired, we're now talking about The Secret Window.

Anyone care to photoshop Kahn into that picture?

Canis Hoopus The Utah Pick: Did it Just Gain Value?

Hey folks, just wanted to take a look at what the Utah pick will mean to us now that Sloan is out of the picture. After the jump I'll look at the protection that the pick has left and Utah's schedule for the rest of the year as well as a brief glance at their outlook. I'd assume most people would be happy if we didn't get that pick this year, so if we can push it off until next year or the year after, that'd be ideal.

Canis Hoopus Post-Love Scenario

Hey all. Just wanted to imagine up a Post-Love (Hate?) scenario if our FO doesn't want to pay him a maximum deal. Because we know someone will. If the CBA doesn't save us, I don't see Love staying here. I know this goes against popular opinion and rationale, but if we were to trade Love, I just want to imagine some ways to go about this successfully (IMO).

Canis Hoopus Any techies out there?

This is completely unrelated to basketball (We have a few days off here, so I figured it might be a good time), so I apologize if anyone came here expecting the read another crappy piece from Mplax about the Wolves. I figured I would ask this here though because a) it's an online blog so I assume there are at least a few people who know something about something and b) because it never ceases to amaze me with how much of a wealth of knowledge there is here. Now that I've stroked the collective ego of Canis Hoopus:

I'll try to keep this short, but I am looking to buy a new laptop and the options are vast. Hopefully there are also others who are currently looking or planning on looking soon and this will benefit them as well. But I need help (We're Wolves fans, don't we all?) from people who know more than me [about computers]. Preferably, a lot of people who know more and who can put all of their brains together to find me the perfect laptop! Thanks in advance! Now if you could find me a job in finance and/or accounting, that'd be stellar as well...

Canis Hoopus PGs

Inspired by PoorDick's latest post, I decided to look at another alternative to fill our PG positions. Not trading for veterans, but trading for any PG. What I'm looking for with this is a PG who fits what Rambis is trying to run, but also works as a temporary starter and future supersub for Mr. Rubio. I don't have a comprehensive list, by any means, but below is what I have so far. I'd like to hear any contributions or things we are looking for in a PG. For me, it's defense, first and foremost. We have offense out of Beasley and Love and it looks like we have a few other guys who prefer the offensive end over the defensive end. The thing is, we don't have enough defense to cover up for our offensive-oriented players. Defense. After that, I'd want shooting and the ability to run the break while having at least average passing.

Canis Hoopus Chad Ford's latest

So many of you saw the rumor of Love being traded for a guy like Favors, if he becomes available. Well, personally, I don't think that'd be a good trade for us. Favors might fit better and he is certainly a better defender, but a straight up trade seems like awful value for us right now.

Canis Hoopus What Could've Been, or What's Yet to Come?

I'm legitimately excited about our Love/Beasley combo we've got going here. They seem like really good friends and really cover up each others strengths and weaknesses. I think instead of talking about having wings be interchangeable, we have forwards who are interchangeable. They aren't small and power forwards, they are just straight up forwards. I know we're all excited here, and to put a damper on things, we are most likely getting ahead of ourselves, but they're looking good. And it's fun to watch. So let yourself get ahead of yourself, it's more fun that way!

As an incentive to keep reading, there are more videos than words, so your brain won't have to work very hard! Maybe that's only an incentive for me...

Hilarious video. Love and Wes talk about the handshake as well as the coaching staff and Jonny Flynn. Highly recommend checking it out. It's not very long.

From ESPN's OTL that was on this morning. About 8-9 minutes about Rubio... nothing special, but they tried to set him up a lot to insult MN, which he never really did. A lot of "you never know" type answers.

Canis Hoopus Rate the Announcers: Sacramento (Poll open)

Well, inspired by the recent discussion, I decided I would start putting up a post for every away game to see what people think of the announcers. I don't know if atdhe even plays our streams, so maybe I can do it for home games too. We'll start getting familiar with which announcers to mute, which ones are easy targets to make fun of, and which are a pleasure to listen to. So add some comments during the game if you really want to, but I'm assuming most of them will end up in the game thread anyways. But please vote, I'll put the poll up probably around half time so we don't get too many people giving useless votes. Feel free to comment on the Lakers announcers for this one too. They seemed pretty good, but with a number of questionable moments. Overall, they were better than I would have expected coming from the Lakers.

The Wolves will host former NBA players Trey Johnson (pictured), Sundiata Gaines, Curtis Jerrells and Aaron Miles prior to Wednesday's game against the Kings in Sacramento according to a league source. The Wolves would need to release a player currently on the roster to bring a new player in as they already have a league-maximum 15 players with Maurice Ager being the only player without a guaranteed contract.

Canis Hoopus The Showdown: Wittman v. Rambis

Randy_20wittman_medium    versus      Kurtrambis-tz-150_medium

The Showdown: 2007-08 compared to 2010-11. I think the general consensus is that we have more talent now, yes? At least the optimism 2 weeks ago would make me think so. Even if it's not by a huge margin, I think it's true. Now on one hand, the league also probably has more talent, but I don't know how to control for that, so just keep it in mind while reading.

Obviously our players are not going to win 40 games this year. Keeping that in mind, who is more to blame for our current talent not even being able to win 20 or 25?

Cleveland strikes back!

over 1 year ago Tiny Mplax 11 comments

For all we've heard about the NBA trying to clean up its image and become more family friendly, this just seems like an interesting choice of sponsors.

So I think the one thing we can really take from the NBA is that it's less about their image and more about what image they think can make them money. And for sponsors, it's kind of the opposite of their image.

Maybe Al Jefferson should be the NBA posterboy? Too soon? But seriously, this is just outrageous considering they're telling Kevin Love to not use swear words in his writing. Are you really telling me that drinking is better than swearing here and there? At any age?
