The Copper & Blue How about Two KHLers

We talked about KHL goalies a couple of months ago.

With the signing of Yann Danis today,  I thought I'd run up those KHL Save% numbers again.

The Copper & Blue A Number that Intrigues me:  $8,400,000

C&B regular Mr. DeBakey has always been a big fan of offer sheets, much like The Copper & Blue is a fan of offer sheets.  His summer idea?  Nab Michael Frolik from the cap-strapped Chicago Blackhawks and pay only a 2nd round pick.

I haven’t seen Michael Frolik play very many NHL games.  But, as an Associate Member of the Decimal Point Diva Club of Edmonton, I’ve followed his career statistically.  I like him on paper.  Last night I saw him pretty good.

As of July 1, Frolik is a restricted free agent.

As of right now, the Black Hawks have $51,014,670 in Cap space committed to 8 Forwards and 6 defensemen for next year.  They need to sign two goalies and seven skaters for about $10,000,000, a $1.1 Million average.

If the Oilers offered Frolik $8,400,000 over 3 years, a Cap hit of $2.8 million:

  • Would he take it?
  • Would the Black Hawks match?
  • Would he be that capable two-way left winger for Horcoff and Hemsky?
  • Is he worth a 2nd Round pick in 2012?
  • Is he worth the Cap hit?

OK, good, next, what about a 1st Rounder to New Jersey for Zajac?

The Copper & Blue Could The KHL Hold The Key To A Barons Playoff Appearance?

Regular commenter Mr. DeBakey believes that help for the Barons means temporary help for the Oilers must be addressed first.

When the latest spate of injuries struck the Oilers last week, I suggested the Oilers look to Europe for a couple of bodies to fill out the roster.  This would allow most of the Barons to remain in Oklahoma City as they battle for a play-off position and a playoff appearance would be a boon to the young players in the organization as well as the Barons franchise.

The Oilers set a precedent a year ago when they signed Charles Linglet for the last couple of weeks of the season.  Actually, Linglet is available again. He and fellow Gorkian Matt Ellison, a center, were both available after fine seasons in the KHL and their Torpedoes have been knocked out of the KHL playoffs.  As usual, The Oilers ignored my suggestion. Its not fluke they're about to draft in the Top 10 for the 4th time in five years.

The Copper & Blue Here is the Plan, first keep Hemsky...

As the current Oiler season limps towards its inevitable conclusion, more and more attention is focused on next year and the look of the Oilers going into the future.

Thoughts on trades, prospects rising, UFAs departing [perhaps arriving] are being voiced here, there, everywhere on the intertubes.

I pasted a little 3-year chart into the comments at Lowetide, a pretty so-so effort if I do say so myself.  I’ve reworked the info a little – fixed the blatant errors and clarified my thoughts.

Its an attempt to give a sense of how the Oiler’s line-up will evolve over the next three seasons - how lines break out, how the Cap Hit changes.

The Copper & Blue Khabibulin Insurance

BUFFALO, NY - NOVEMBER 11: Nikolai Khabibulin #35 of the Edmonton Oilers gathers the puck during the game against the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena on November 11, 2009 in Buffalo, New York. (Photo by Rick Stewart/Getty Images)

Nikolai Khabibulin goes to trial  July 7 on his Extreme DUI charges. This is only fitting as, for Oiler fans, last season's goaltending situation was a trial. I hope Steady Steve is thinking of ways to make next season a "net positive". As always, I'm trying to help and decided to take a quick look at AHL goaltenders. Twenty of them played 30 AHL games in each of the past two seasons.
