Russell Wilson - Pete Carroll's Point Guard

Something struck me about Russell Wilson after the Washington game. His stats don't seem to come anywhere close to measuring his impact on Seattle's performance. Even on Seattle's unprecedented late season hot streak, Wilson's stats, while incredibly efficient, didn't jump off the page the same way his play jumped off of the screen or the Hawks blew teams off of the field. I'm a follower of advanced stats, but something still wasn't adding up.

Wilson's stats are pretty similar to the dreaded 'Game Manager' quarterback. But the eyeball test tells me that we aren't exactly running Rob Johnson out there on Sundays. So, what gives? The Seahawks have a dynamic, playmaking quarterback leading its team to some pretty impressive victories, but with the stats of a mere mortal. As far as I know, he has yet to throw a 300 yard game.

Pete Carroll has placed emphasis on the idea that the QB is the team's point guard, used to distribute the ball rather than carry the team on his back.

I really think, that as Wilson has matured in this offense, he is growing into the Point Guard that Pete envisions. Seattle has some good weapons on its offense and lately, I think Wilson has been doing a fantastic job of distributing the ball to those playmakers. I actually credit Bevell as well, for play calls that have spread the offense around. Everyone knows that Marshawn makes the Hawks offense go, but in the passing game Seattle, and therefore Wilson and Bevell, just take what they are given. Exactly like a Point Guard should.
