Emeka Okafor Season in Review

Emeka Okafor's season in review

New Orleans Hornets lose tiebreaker to the Cleveland Cavaliers

In a random drawing conducted by the NBA, the New Orleans Hornets lost out on a tiebreaker to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday for the third-most chances to win the May 30 lottery for the top overall pick in this June’s draft. Both teams finished with identical 21-45 records after the regular season ended on Thursday night. Having lost the tiebreaker, the Hornets now have a 137 chances out of a 1,000 combinations to win the No. 1 overall pick. The Hornets will have 11 chances out of 1,000 to win the top pick with Minnesota’s unprotected first-round pick they acquired in the December trade with the Los Angeles Clippers for point guard Chris Paul. The lowest the Hornets' could pick in the first round is seventh and 13.

Finally, the Season is Over

Tanking advocates, rejoice. The Hornets finished last night's game with Jerome Dyson and Darryl Watkins and promptly scored 6 points in the fourth quarter en route to an 84-77 loss to the rival...

Hornets Sign Darryl Watkins to 10-Day Contract

In light of Okafor and Kaman being ruled out for the season, the Hornets have signed center Darryl Watkins to a 10 day contract (presumably to close out the rest of the season). In order to make room for Watkins, the team released Chris Johnson... who hasn't played since April 1st with his concussion.

Chris Kaman and Emeka Okafor Officially Ruled Out for Rest of Season

I thought Kaman looked as if he were limping against Memphis on Sunday and he's officially been ruled out for the rest of the season with a bruised left tibia. Meanwhile Emeka Okafor, who has missed the last 34 games with a sore left knee, will miss the last five games as well. Chris Johnson's status for the rest of the season with his concussion is still uncertain. Eric Gordon, meanwhile, is expected to play tonight after being given the Bobcats game off for rest.

New Orleans Hornets Could Have New Owner by Friday

It seems unlikely that the sale of the team would go from mildly discussed to completed in a day's time but according to the Times-Pic, it's possible. The reason I'm posting this is because a couple bits of information from it. "It appears the league might be ready to choose between an offer from a group headed by California swimwear manufacturer Raj Bhathal that will include former Hornets minority owner Gary Chouest, and a bid from New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson." "Sources close to the Bhathal group, which also included Larry Benson, Tom Benson’s youngest brother and represented in ongoing negotiations by former NBA player, coach and executive Mike Dunleavy, said Bhathal and Chouest met in New York on Monday with league officials, and possibly with Stern, while Benson reportedly also spoke with the NBA on Monday but was not in New York" "Chouest, the source said, did not want to be a majority owner of the Hornets, but wanted to be involved on a basis similar to his previous minority ownership with founding owner George Shinn. "

Jarrett Jack Out For The Season

Jarrett Jack has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right foot and will be shut down for the rest of the season by the team. Jack had a pretty good year for the team and it's a shame we'll never really get to see (outside of one home game on January 4th) how he and Eric Gordon would look together in the back court.

Eric Gordon Will Start Tonight

After going through practice, Gordon is set to start tonight but Monty Williams said they'll monitor his minutes and he'll play around 25-30 tonight. Also, Carl Landry and Trevor Ariza, both coming off their respective sprained ankles, will play tonight. Chris Johnson, however, will miss the game with his concussion. This means that everyone, with the exception of Emeka Okafor, will play tonight and this will be the first time since opening night that the Hornets have their almost full assortment of players.

Once-decimated Hornets now one of NBA's most promising franchises

A really cool article from CNN that discusses the Hornets in depth (and the fairest article I've read on the team from a national publication in quite some time). It also hints that the team is looking to remove its Hornets namesake and give itself a new nickname more endearing to the city of New Orleans. As a Hornets fan (from their Charlotte days), it's not something I'm incredibly in favor of but it's something that entirely makes sense. Anyways, pretty long read but a good one. And, by the way, Monty Williams is getting universal love from people this season. It's even mentioned in this article how well he's done and it goes to show, again, that the new ownership would be best served keeping the front office intact.

Eric Gordon Looking to Make Return

Per the Times-Pic. "Barring any unforeseen setbacks or missteps, Hornets shooting guard Eric Gordon — the team’s leading scorer despite playing two games this season — could be back on the court in a matter of days. "Gordon was expected to go through the team’s practice session Tuesday evening, the final step in the rehabilitation process after arthroscopic knee surgery Feb. 14 that removed some cartilage and other debris from his right knee, an injury that arguably wrecked the Hornets’ season and cast Gordon’s future with the team in doubt." _________________________________________________ "You know me; I’d like to have him back yesterday," Williams said. "But if he can practice, then that means he could be closer than we think. I don’t want to lead you on to think that if he has a good practice he’ll play against Golden State. But if he does have a good practice and he’s feeling good, you never know."

Jason Smith Suspended by NBA for Two Games

I'm sure everyone has heard about it by now but it hasn't been linked anywhere on the site. Jason Smith has been suspended for two games for his hit on Blake Griffin. One of those games is against the Clippers; so any retaliation on the Clippers' part will have to wait until later in the season.

Carl Landry Returns to Practice

Landry practiced yesterday without any restrictions for the first time since spraining his left MCL about a month ago. In that same game, the Hornets lost Jason Smith to a concussion and just got him back last week. This also comes amongst news that Eric Gordon is set to return to practice this week. Landry looked good in the practice, according to Monty Williams, and is expected back in the lineup no later than Saturday's match-up against the San Antonio Spurs; barring any setbacks from now until then. Also, I found these words in the article to be fairly cryptic from Monty Williams. On another topic, Williams implied after practice that his future with the franchise isn’t guaranteed once the new ownership group is announced. After this season, Williams has a year remaining on his contract with an option for a fourth year. After leading the Hornets to the playoffs in his first season as coach last season, the team has struggled to 11-34 record this season. "I think any time you coach in this league, you never know what the future is going to hold,’’ Williams said. "I was taught that you put a program in place to move forward regardless if you are in position or not, and that’s the way I coach. "I’m not saying that’s going to happen. I don’t know the future, but if I had to be removed or something like that, I always would want someone to walk in here and say, ‘Man, I don’t have to do a lot, this guys know how to play basketball.’ " Asked what he would he tell the new ownership about the future of the current team, Williams said: "We have some young players and a lot of promise, and we have some young vets that have got better since we’ve been here. If I’m not the coach to coach this team into the future, I know this team is headed in the right direction.’’

Eric Gordon Set to Return to Practice Next Week

Pretty big news for the season. Monty Williams has stated that Gordon's really been working to get back on the court. Also, Carl Landry should be back on the court no later than Saturday night's game against San Antonio (barring any setbacks). Finally, Larry Foote was not resigned to a second ten day contract; which is no surprise with the return of Jason Smith on Saturday.
