via espn.com

Nomar Garciaparra and the Oakland Athletics have agreed to terms on a one-year deal, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The A's will make the announcement on Friday, the Chronicle reported.

Conversations between Garciaparra, who had been contemplating retirement, and the A's have been percolating for a couple of weeks.

Garciaparra, 35, batted .264 in 55 games for the Dodgers last season, as he battled injuries. Oakland's interest in him is presumably to help them balance their lineup: The right-handed hitting Garciaparra hammered lefties last season, going 19-for-56, with four homers and a 1.067 OPS.

The Athletics are heavy in left-handed hitters, with left fielder Jack Cust, designated hitter Jason Giambi, first baseman Daric Barton and third baseman Eric Chavez, among others.

Seems to me like Billy Beane realises it isn't going to take much to win this division this year, so he's picking up everyone left off the scrap heap.

Why not John Lynch?

He's a hard hitting safety who can do it all. We can move Grant over to Free Safety, where I believe he could be successful. Also Lynch fulfills Ruskell's requirements in regards to player character and conduct.

He's a nine time pro bowler who went to the pro bowl each of the last four years. He is currently unemployed and I believe could come on the cheap (He signed with NE for 1.5 million at the beginning of the year). He also played in the same Tampa 2 style of defense we use when he was in Tampa Bay.

He's a veteran leader, and I feel like it's a low risk, high reward situation.
