Handicapping the Final 53
With the draft done and rookie minicamp wrapping up, it's time to put on your predictive caps and handicap the players you think might make the final 53 cut for the regular season. I'll start off the list with starters so you can pick backup and developmental players to make up the rest of the roster. Also sub out my starters if you think one doesn't make the final cut.
Why you are wrong about the Jets
This is an open letter to my fellow Jets fans that are falling apart nearly as badly as the 8-8 Jets did in December.
In sports, and maybe life, its so easy to forget your past. Of course, as a Jets fan, we generally encourage our brethren to put the past behind us because it isn't really the type of history that weaves in and out of NFL lore. We arent the Packers, 49ers or Steelers.
But we arent the Same Old Jets, either.....

The Most Important Stat
Rex made it clear on Hard Knocks that the one stat he wanted his team to own was "Lead the League in Wins".
Through the first 6 games, the Jets are 5-1, with an NFL best .833 win percent.
In the AFC the Patriots and Steelers both have a 4-1 record and in the NFC there are no teams with fewer than 2 losses.
What we do know is that it is still early in the year. Plenty of teams open hot and go bust down the stretch. The Jets are notorious for that. But at least heading into the bye we can feel confident that the Jets may not be the #1 team in ESPN power rankings, may not have the #1 defense or #1 passing game, but we lead the league in the only stat that gets you a bye and home field through the playoffs - WINS.
We still have to face some tough teams and have another matchup against both the Patriots and Dolphins who both won in OT today, but 5-1 feels pretty good and gives fans a chance to enjoy our time atop the AFC for at least 2 weeks until we face GB on Halloween.
One other thought - I found it a little strange to root for the Ravens against the Pats today knowing both teams are likely playoff bound, and we'll have to cut through at least one of them to make it to the big dance (and really don't want the Ravens to get home field against us and they already have a tie breaking win against us). Once the game went to OT, I was actually rooting for a tie. I think a tie would've help us because a tie is a sort of notch against both teams and would equally hurt 2 teams the Jets will likely face in the playoffs as far as determining home field and a bye week, all else equal. Am I wrong?
Jersey Burning Party
If Revis isnt back with the team by the Ravens Monday Night game, I am encouraging my friends (and the rest of GGN) to do a public jersey burning.
Maybe if Revis and his agents see that we have had enough of this and realizes that we wont support him anymore (by buying his crap) it might motivate them to come to the table before the damage is irreparable.
I think we should start mobilizing and get public commitments from fans that if Revis doesnt come back down to earth, and isnt with the team by the ravens game, we are holding HIM to blame.
You can count me for 1, and Eve in my group for 1, and who else is in?

Luck, fortune, or divine intervention?
Let's just say that missing a crucial field goal is the "Same Old Jets". When the game is on the line, and the special teams unit takes the field for a field goal attempt, every Jets fan gets a ping in their stomachs that doesn't settle until the kick is well passed the uprights. We've had our fair share of misses throughout the years. But the 2009-10 season is something special to behold.
It almost makes you wonder if there really is a god and if he could have finally become a Jets fan sometime in mid December...
Best use of 20 minutes EVER!
I just read through the Jets/Bengals game log over at the Phinsider. It is long, so I skipped a lot of the chatter about the commercials, but its GREAT.
They start out chest bumping about how terrible the Jets are. Predicting a 6 int night for Sanchez. Then they are all virtual high-fiving through the Coles TD. And suddenly, the mood starts to change. Jets put points on the board..... And they get mad. They are stunned. But there is still hope.
By half time, a few are giving props to Revis and the Jets D, and when the Jets are up by 2 TDs they've basically in shock and disbelief... When Benson hits his big run to bring it within 7 they are all like Sanchez will give the same away now.. but they are quickly silenced for the night after the second big Keller play.
But its great to watch these guys, who hate us with every fiber of their being, basically fall on their sword as the Jets wrap up this beauty of a game.

Feel free to stop by and post some notes on their message boards. I'm sure they'll love it.
Cold Shoulder to Fireman Ed?!
From the NY Post:
Ochocinco offered Anzalone VIP Treatment" for Saturday's AFC Wild Card game including a flight to Ohio.
Anzalone immediately rejected the offer.
"I'm honored the guy would give me the opportunity to do something like that but he's the enemy," Anzalone said today from the set of Showtime's "Inside the NFL." "That's like sleeping with the enemy. Come on, I'm a Jets fan."
Anzalone then added jokingly, "Of course, no one from the Jets has offered to fly me out there."
As for the new stadium, Anzalone said he has his seats for next year but will be moving from his current spot (about the 10-yard line on the lower level) to the end zone, where the personal seat license costs $5,000 as opposed to $15,000 in his old spot.
WTF is up with the Jets? This guy (fireman Ed) has been a Jets staple for as long as I've been going to games. When he stands up and starts quieting the crowd, the screens at the Meadowlands instantly focus on him and in unisen flash the letters "J E T S" as Ed leads the crowd.
He gets the game ball week 2 when the Pats lost to the Jets in the meadowlands. He'll I've even seen him on TV in NFL commercials and in magazines as a sort of Jets Mascot ala the Dawg Pound and the Redskin Hogs, and the other teams that have groups of fans that come to personify the team.
So they move to a new stadium, and he has to move his seats to the endzone because the PSL at his current location is too much? I think Woody or Rex or Sanchez or someone needs to pay up for this guy's PSL. He does enough for the team and does not draw a salary or anything that the least they can do it take care of his PSL for him.
Is it just me? If every Jets PSL was $0.50 more (so let's guess 60,000 PSL seats) do you think fans would be willing to pay the extra buck to keep this tradition in the new home? I think they would. So why wouldnt the Jets be willing to basically eat $30K for 2 seats for Ed and his buddy?
I dont know Ed and I dont know if the Jets reached out to him or not, but the article in the post makes it sound like they treat him like every other fan - except when they want to milk his popularity with the fans for their own good.
Ed- if you license green and white fireman helmets and sell them for $20, I'll buy one and I'm sure 5000 fans will buy them and that will more than cover your PSL.
I'm Sick and Tired of the Colts Game
First, I do feel a little sorry for Indy Fans who shelled out $150 and basically watched a Preseason Game 4 type game. I know I'd be pissed off if it were me. But sometimes I pay $60 for pay-per-view boxing for a match that only goes 2 rounds. Also I go to baseball games and the parent team has called up all the prospects because of injuries in the majors and now the Major League team is full of rookies and the AAA team is now full of AA prospects too. I guess in a live environment you have to be willing to accept that risk.
But, on the other hand, the only reason anyone cares about the Colts is
- because they did this at the sacrifice of their perfect season and
- because it keeps the Jets in the running for a post season bid where 7 teams are all vying for 2 spots.
Let's face facts: If the earlier games ended differently and any one of the 3 teams that had to win actually won their game, the Jets would have been eliminated from the post season before their game started, and the Colts would have still rested their players and lost the game and their perfect season. Then most of the complains in the NFL and media (aside from Colts fans re: the perfect season) would be non-existant. So this is more about the perception that the Jets got a gift than anything else (and from those 6 other teams fighting for the playoffs)
If one of those 3 teams last week were playing the Lions or some other rebuilding franchise, would be all be moaning about how they have an easy win? No. Cause that is how the schedule works out, and sometimes you are in a weak division and play lots of weak teams and make the playoffs where better teams playing tougher schedules do not. Not only are people mad about this spot because its the Jets who benefit, but also because it doesnt seem fair for a good team to lose to a lesser team simply to preserve their players.
The fact that the Jets NEEDED to win that game was irrelevant. I agree with the other folks who said if these bubble teams got it done the other 14 or 15 weeks, they wouldn't have to hope for an easy match-up (either by schedule or personnel decision) the last game of the season. The Jets didn't get it done, they had the Colts next on the schedule, and had to play them for the win.
The Jets went to Indy, played the Colts and won. I agree with Rex that he can't choose which players are on the field for the Colts, so as far as he's concerned, the Jets did what they had to do to win. This ISNT the preseason and the Jets were under no obligation to bench their starters too... Plus, the Colts weren't able to build a huge lead after 40 minutes of game play - only 5 points, so it wasn't like the Jets were just hapless beneficiaries of circumstance.
Do you remember a few years back when the Patriots were on their perfect season run and they ran up scores on the opponents. It was driving fans and the media nuts! Let's assume that it was done to help break all the single season records. Everyone (outside of NE) argued at the time that it wasn't in the spirit of the NFL to do that, and the Pats should put their backups in after a while. That is literally the complete opposite argument people are making here with the Colts (with the key difference being that this time it cost the Colts the game. I think that a team ultimately can decide who to play and when.
Lastly, I saw another interesting point that the Colts playing their backups isn't only benefiting the starters and the Jets. Suppose that the Colts suffer an injury in the playoffs (Manning or another key position player). Asking the backups - who are NFL players waiting for their big break, btw - to get in there and finish the playoffs is to be expected. Perhaps you are doing the team a huge favor by seasoning some of your rookies and backups where you can so when you do need to call on them, they have some actual game experience against an opponents "A" team. It's called DEPTH, but I realize most fans have no idea what that is.
Personally, I don't agree on completely resting starters because I think it ruins momentum and that the bye week doesn't always lead to a sharper team, sometimes it is disruptive. I think reducing carries, and limiting game time is a good idea. If the Jets had Home Field locked up I wouldn't be against splitting time with Clemens or Ainge, and also wouldn't be against playing Woodhead more or giving Wright and Clowney some more action. Hunter and Turner too. If we were 14-0, I would have waited for a bigger lead than 15-10 though!
Just some thoughts.
Sanchez by the numbers
The Jets didn't get a chance to draft Matthew Stafford, who went with the 1st pick of the draft, but it seemed to everyone at the time that they got their man picking Mark Sanchez with the 5th pick of the draft... A lot of comparisons were made between these two QBs throughout the off-season and the preseason. Well, now that Stafford is officially on Injured Reserve, maybe its time to do a side-by-side.
Before I begin, I will openly recognize a few things:
1. The quality of the teams these QBs played on differs
2. Both QBs did NOT play in the same number of games
Player TD / Int / Completion Pct / QB Rating / Sacks
Sanchez 12/20/54.0/63.2/26
Stafford 13/20/53.3/61.0/24
Freeman 9/16/55.2/61.0/19
It doesn't look good for any of the top 1st rounders of 2009.... I think expectations were higher for Sanchez because he started so strong and the team around him was much better than the Lions. But the numbers show that these two QBs (and all three with Freeman in the mix) all played more or less the same.
There are of course some intangibles like leadership and poise, but I don't know that we have enough information on any of these QBs to really decide if these guys can live up to the hype or not. I think the answer will be more clear in a few seasons, but for now, only one of these QBs is in the hunt for a playoff spot, so in my eyes, that is still the key statistic (cause its all about winning a Super Bowl, isn't it?)
Who will have the better career? I have no idea but my money isn't on JaMarcus Russell...
Borrowing from ST to bolster D lost the game
I was surprised in Week 1 that Shonn Green was not active. What I realized later was that Ryan decided to bolster the defense, missing both S Ellis and C Pace, so he stacked the defense and consequently, had to deactivate some of his 3rd string players. Every week since that I noticed that different players were inactive, mainly to add personnel at weak spots on the field.
Now I dont know how common it is from week to week to dramatically change your active and inactive players - but the Jets do it a lot. And unfortunately, with Jenkins out for the season and some other minor injuries, Rex apparently did the same last week against the Fins.
While our defense certainly played well and looked the part, thanks in part to the creative personnel packages on the field, the special teams suffered as a direct result:
"Westhoff was without three of his favorite players Sunday, Ahmad Carroll, Marquice Cole and Marques Murrell, who were inactive. The Jets wanted more size and help for banged-up linebacker Bart Scott."
from the NY Daily News.
So it wasn't just a fluke that Miami was so dangerous on kickoffs - with Carroll, Cole and Murrell all inactive, and Brad Smith injured and J Miller signed to just handle KR duties (this spot used to belong to L Washington who was also the 2nd RB.. this week we needed 2 bodies to fill that role, RB S Greene and KR J Miller), we should have realized early on in the game we'd be in trouble - especially when K Jay Feely made two or three kickoff tackles. Once we saw our Kicker getting downfield and making the tackle, EVERYONE should have realized that something wasn't right with that picture. And now I think we all understand why.......
Now I don't necessarily blame Rex for this because looking at our Defense, they are among the most devastating in the NFL, despite a laundry list of injuries and suspensions since week 1. However, you cannot completely deplete special teams and expect to contain the kickoffs. After the first 2 kick returns for a touchdown, I was surprised and mad to see they were still kicking to Ginn. I would have preferred them kicking it out of the endzone (hell, even out of bounds and take the penalty) than give up huge field position and a possible 3rd TD to Ginn.
I think we need to cross train the team a little better on ST so that when we pull the 3rd and 4th stringers out (or inactive them) and the guys higher on the depth chart have to play ST, they know what they're doing.
Braylon Edwards stone handed?
This is a comment you've been hearing and reading since the beginning of the preseason when the Braylon Edwards trade rumors started.
Now, I'm not expert on the Browns, Braylon, Derek Anderson or any of their other players. But what I do know is that Derek Anderson completed just 2 of 17 passes today, without Braylon on the field.
Now, I didnt watch the game (thank god, because from the "highlights" it was painful to watch even if you were a player on the field), so I dont know if it was the wind, or if Anderson's passes were just heaves down field (from what I understand they were actually mostly short dump offs due to the wind) or whatever, but I'm sure one could make an argument that the QB situation in Cleveland may be at least partially responsible for the stone handed reputation that Braylon had in Cleveland.
I guess we'll have a better sense of that by the end of the season.
Your thoughts?
Bills = worst team in NFL.
While the Bills looked great in the first game of the season, nearly beating a rusty Tom Brady, they are officially the worst team in the NFL having lost two games to the lowly Browns and the one-hit-wonder Dolphins.
Another totally unrelated observation: The Bears gave up 2 first round picks and a third round pick AND Kyle Orton to Denver for Jay Cutler... I was bummed about Cutler going to Chicago when it was announced. But in retrospect, both teams look great this year, and how dumb does Chicago feel for giving up 3 picks for Cutler considering how Orton is getting it done in Denver? And to think the Jets got Sanchez for a 2nd round pick and bunch of backups from Cleveland. Looks like a steal compared to Chicago. Hopefully Sanchez continues to develop into a pro bowl caliber QB.
Can someone explain to me why did not resign Edwards?
Ok, i get the whole CBA restricted free agent versus unrestricted free agent bit (or at least it is still up in the air)... and I also get that Leon Washington is in the same boat as Braylon Edwards, and if either of the two deserve a new deal, its Leon... But I would love for someone to explain to me how we expect this to play out at the end of the year.. do the Jets just offer Leon and Braylon new contracts, or are they going to be testing the open markets, and will we have first right of refusal...
I dont want to doubt Tannenbaum, but we did make some strange off season moves, like letting Coles go instead of trading him, not resigning Baker, cutting and resigning Brandon Moore, cutting Chad Pennington instead of trading him (that might have been a cap issue), not to mention what went down with Pete Kendall a few years back.
The reason I ask is this: if Braylon sucks, he'll get cut and move onto another team as a #2 or whatever. If he's great, we'll get hosed or potentially not be able to resign him. And then we are where we started today, but minus 2 players and 2 draft picks....
Just want to know whether or not an Edwards jersey will be keeping my Brett Favre jersey company in my closet next season.
What we can expected against the Pats
HolyJoeNamath.com Readers, Please Read And Pass Along
HolyJoeNamath.com has been working around the clock to become the entire source for all things New York Jets. The growth of the site has been amazing, and more has been the great readers, comments, and emails I receive on a day to day basis. Today I was notified by a representative of the NFL that using the name “Joe Namath” is not legal. Unfortunately, there is no way around this, so I will be changing the name of the site, and making some minor changes, because of this move, this opens partnerships with a wide variety of other major sites and should increase content and contests for the site.
Adam Greenbaum
We also have a few new writers, all Jets experts looking to take this site to the next level. We truly hope you bear with us as we make this uncomfortable change days before the first game of the year.
To make this change easy on you, we’ll be doing some big giveaways other events this weekend while we are live in Houston to cover the Jets vs. Texans. The conversion will no be easy, and I ask that all readers of the site please help us spread the word on the change of the site.
I thank all of you for the awesome support, and if you see any changes tonight, do not be alarmed, we should be ready to go first thing tomorrow morning.
Thanks Again,
Adam Greenbaum
This is a great Jets blog site and I really enjoy their material, so if you haven't been by, you should check them out once they are up and running again. If you get their error and have no idea what's going on, I hope this helps explain the situation.
Their site is down right now, citing a database issue - my guess is they are quickly working through some of the changes required to comply with NFL rules. This was briefly posted on their site, which I was able to get through their RSS feed around 10:00 PM.
Waivers... How it works
This weekend is all about waivers. For many players, clearing waivers may be the end of the line. But what does clearing waivers mean, and how does the waiver process work?
In a nutshell, teams have 24 hours to submit a claim for a player that was cut (who is on the waiver wire). If only one team shows interest, they get the rights to sign the player. In the event that two or more teams show interest, the team with the worst record last year gets the rights to sign the player. If no one claims the player off waivers, his is technically a free agent and may sign with anyone (but, most likely either gets picked up by a team for a Practice Squad assignment, or is out of the NFL - unemployed)
So in 2009, the Lions get the first crack at any player that is cut (cause they will win any circumstance where 2 or more teams claim the same player). The Jets are middle of the pack and the only way we can claim a player is if no one with a worst record than us from last year does.
Not all cut players have to go through the waivers process. There is a rule in the CBA that allows 4+ year veterans to avoid the waiver system. Below is the explaination of eligibilty from Wikipedia, which I think is pretty accurate:
Jeff Garcia cut by Oakland
I'll keep this brief since I hate wasting my breath on something that wont happen - cause its too logical - which is the Jets need to cut Kellen Clemens and sign Jeff Garcia. Clemens, I love you man, but you weren't QB enough to win the starting job from Sanchez...
So why take Garcia if he wasn't good enough either? Well, cause he has ACTUAL EXPERIENCE AS STARTING QB IN THE NFL.
So I dont know if I want him as #2, hell, I'd put Ainge as #2 and Garcia as #3, but at least let some of his experience help Sanchez and Ainge develop.....
Behind the Numbers: 56 Man Roster
I've spent the better part of this evening between the Jets website, ESPN, Wikipedia, the NFL Draft Site and others in order to put together a comprehensive view of the Jets 56 man roster (Allison on IR, and Ellis and Pace serving suspensions gets the 53 man to 56, for now...) And behind all data I captured, I have some interesting facts for you to chew on:
How to get a #2WR without giving away the farm
First off, trading a 1st round pick, a 3rd round pick AND David Harris to Broncos for Marshall is crazy. This is for a few reasons:
- Marshall is in the last year of his rookie contract, same story as Leon. He either needs a new deal or becomes (potentially) a UFA at the end of the year.
- How do you offer Marshall a new deal without getting Leon signed first?
- I can understand a 1st round pick for Marshall, but giving up a playmaking Harris is stupid.
- Harris is awesome, and we have no depth as it is, so this is a terrible idea.
How would I approach it?
- Trade a 1st rounder and a strong special teams WR to Cleveland for Braylon Edwards. I dont have a lot of value for Brad Smith outside of special teams. But Mangini might think this is a good deal (he took Ratliff, didnt he?!)
- Now you have 2 WRs in Edwards and Cotchery for 2009, lost 1 draft pick.
- Next offseason, if and when Marshall becomes a free agent, THEN offer him a boat load of $$ to come over. If not him, find another Free Agent #1 WR. There must be a few off contract.
- Use your remaining draft picks in 2010 to get another TE, OL, DE, OLD, but not necessarily in that order.
- Let Clemens go at the end of the year, and look to pick up a veteran QB for the #3 spot, move Ainge up to #2.
What are your thoughts?
Brady injurs shoulder; Pats cut backup QB....??!
Quarterback Kevin O’Connell, projected to be Tom Brady’s backup, was cut Monday by the New England Patriots.O’Connell’s release came three days after Brady sustained what the Patriots described as a sore shoulder in a 27-24 exhibition win over the Washington Redskins.
I wonder if this means the Patriots have locked onto another veteran backup (eg AJ Feely who may be teamless with the addition of Michael Vick in Philadelphia) or if the Pats found another 7th round wonder child... O'Connell was a third rounder in 2008, so maybe he came too high in the draft for their liking (Brady was picked in the 5th and Cassell in the 7th).
Gailey out as Chiefs offensive coordinator
From Yahoo! Sports:
KANSAS CITY, MO.(AP) —The Kansas City Chiefs have fired Chan Gailey as offensive coordinator.
The Chiefs said head coach Todd Haley would address Gailey’s status with the team after Monday’s practice.
The Chiefs had retained Gailey when Haley was hired in the offseason.
The team is heading into the 2009 season with big questions about its offensive line, and the health of quarterback Matt Cassel. Cassel was injured in Saturday’s preseason loss to Seattle.
Bronco's Marshall Suspended Indefinitely
According to the posting on NESN, Broncos' coach Josh McDaniels has suspended WR Brandon Marshall for the rest of the preseason, based on insubordination exhibited throughout the offseason/preseason.
What happened to Marcus Henry?
Chansi Stuckey is certainly an NFL caliber WR, and his name is the only one you really ever hear regarding the search for a 2nd wideout opposite Jerricho Cotchery. Stuckey is entering his 3rd NFL season.
But last year, we picked up Marcus Henry, a 6'4" towering target in the 6th round. Henry is still on the team, but I dont think I remember hearing his name all camp. First off, Wallace Wright was the favored target of Mark Sanchez when he played with the 2s. And David Clowney lit up the field with both Sanchez and Eric Ainge during the Rams preseason game. But still not a peep about Henry... Does he have a problem with routes or drops that his number doesn't come up very often? Seems like the type of guy you look for going over the middle....
