Good morning! Back to the grind. We have a light day of Kansas City Chiefs news for you today. Enjoy.

For the second time in his still-young NFL career, Dexter McCluster is a wide receiver. But stay tuned to his situation, because soon he could be a running back, also for the second time.

That's a lot of movement for a player who joined the Chiefs only two years ago. But it suggests the rather obvious: The Chiefs are struggling to find some value from McCluster, the first of their two second-round picks in 2010.

A very happy Memorial Day to you. A great day to remember those who came before us, and all they gave. Enjoy your friends and family today. Be safe. Remember. I've included remembrances of Chiefs we've lost along the way. I know it's not a full list. Feel free to include your own memories or links in the comments. Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news.

Lamar Hunt, whose father's Texas oil fortune gave him the springboard to become a prime founder of the American Football League and who gave the Super Bowl its name, died Wednesday night in Dallas. He was 74. The cause was complications of prostate cancer, according to a spokesman for the National Football League team that Hunt owned, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Good morning! Hope everyone is having a good holiday weekend so far. Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news. Be safe.

Chris Mortensen reported on ESPN 32 late Friday that the Chiefs have "no concerns whatsoever" about Charles' readiness for the 2012 season. Though Charles won't practice until training camp, his absence from OTAs is purely a precaution.

Good morning! We have an odd day of Kansas City Chiefs news for you. Today's stories include more coverage of OTAs, a look at last season's stand out defenders, and a former Chief arrested for attempted murder. Enjoy.

If Baldwin wants to use OTAs to communicate more openly with teammates, he should start with Cassel. Following an underwhelming rookie season, the receiver said he studied hours of film and pushed himself in the weight room.

If Monday's circus catch is any indication, Baldwin's preparation will pay off in a much-improved sophomore campaign. But Baldwin's continued improvement will only go as far as his on-field relationship with Matt Cassel.

Continuing to build a quarterback-receiver rapport with Baldwin and his other new targets is one of Cassel's main goals as OTAs progress.

Chiefs Focus On Communication Camaraderie During First Week Of OTAs from The Mothership

In his rookie debut, McCluster set a franchise record with a 94-yard punt return touchdown on Monday Night Football. Two weeks later, he left 49ers LB Travis LaBoy flat-footed in the open field and raced for a 31-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

It was all about matchups with McCluster and the Chiefs were getting the looks they wanted. Especially with Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones fueling what would become the league's leading rushing attack and Dwayne Bowe commanding the attention of opposing defensive backs.

But then, just as quickly as his career had taken flight, McCluster hit a wall.

Good morning! Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news. Have a great weekend and be safe, friends.

On Thursday's second snap from scrimmage Poe burst through the line and found his way to QB Matt Cassel. Pads are absent from OTAs and no live contact is permitted, but Poe was able to show impressive strength and quickness on the play.

"If you can practice without pads, you can do it with pads," Poe said earlier this week. "It's about your hands and your steps and being explosive through your hips. Once you get that down, the other stuff becomes easier."

OTA Notebook: Poe Gets In The Mix from The Mothership

The Chiefs said when they drafted the 346-pound Poe they believed he would become an all-round player capable of helping when they defended the pass and the run. But they also acknowledged he had a lot to learn, meaning they might have to choose a more limited role for Poe - at least early in his career and until he becomes more comfortable playing the NFL game.

Crennel wouldn't say the Chiefs have made that decision yet with Poe.

Good morning! Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy.

When the Chiefs lined up for their first offensive snaps of OTAs (Organized Team Activities), zone rushes were among the most popular plays on Brian Daboll's script. The calls included blocking techniques that helped Winston become so successful in Houston's run game over the past few seasons.

"We're doing some outside zone stuff in the run game, which I'm really familiar with from my days in Houston," Winston said. "Pass protections are a little different, but you still have to block the guy in front of you. It gets down to that simple level and you get after it."

Chiefs Feel Primed For Offensive Rebound In 2012 from The Mothership

"I'm an old army brat myself," Crennel told the auditorium filled with military students before the event. "I know what you guys go through when you move from place to place, and I understand it isn't easy."

Crennel thanked those students with a full-on Chiefs experience. For the hour-long event, one hundred students from the military base were coached up by KC Wolf, the Chiefs Cheerleaders and eight members of the Chiefs linebacking corps on healthy habits and exercise.

Good morning! We have another good day of Kansas City Chiefs news for you. How many days till training camp? I'm kind of ready for it. Enjoy.

When their first offseason practice began earlier in the week, Chiefs safeties Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis were among a small group of players who headed to the edge of the field to work with the trainers...

...Berry has said he will be ready to play then. Lewis, a fellow starting safety who had postseason surgery to repair what he said was a torn pectoral muscle, wasn't as definitive.

Chiefs Starting Safeties Taking It Slow For Now from KC Star

As a solo act in 2011 - Berry was lost during Week 1 due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a freak injury that became an epidemic in Kansas City last fall - Lewis recorded 60 tackles, broke up 10 passes and picked off three more, including one for a touchdown, despite late-season issues with his ankle, knee, and shoulder. In 2010, Berry was a holy terror, a Tasmanian devil in cleats, an All-Pro as a rookie and one of the most electric young defenders in the AFC.

Now imagine them together, roaming the plains, upright and pain-free. And you wonder why fans are excited about the potential of this defense? Why some are already pegging the Chiefs as a potential sleeper, to the NFL in 2012 what the surprising 49ers were in 2011?

Good morning! Thanks to OTAs, we have a full morning of Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy!

Football returned to the Truman Sports Complex Monday morning with the first OTA session of the Romeo Crennel era.

Crennel's first on-field practice as Chiefs head coach lasted approximately 90 minutes and included several periods of competitive work matching the offense against the defense.

OTA Notebook: Opening Day from The Mothership

Even if the Chiefs finish the 2012 season in the Super Bowl, they won't necessarily recall Monday as the day it all began. They held their first full-squad offseason practice, sure, but it was more of a get-to-know-you kind of affair.

They worked for about an hour and a half but, since they couldn't wear full pads, they did so without contact. Still, that's more than they've done in the offseason for two years - last year's offseason was disrupted by the lockout - so they were grateful for any work they could get.

"You can say, ‘This team is a contender,’ or, ‘This team is a Super Bowl champ,’ (but) a lot of times when you slot a team like that early in the offseason, they don’t make it," Chiefs left tackle Brandon Albert recently told Chiefs media. "I know we have a good nucleus of guys that know the system and know the way of life around here.

"Hopefully at the end of the day, we come together and we do something special."

Good morning! Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy.

The Chiefs will be on the field Monday afternoon for the first of 10 OTA practices.

A three-day mandatory minicamp will follow the 10 OTA dates, running Kansas City's offseason program into mid-June before breaking until training camp.

Though OTAs consist of helmets-only practices, the on-field sessions will be the closest thing resembling a training camp practice until the Chiefs head to St. Joseph at the end of July.

Good morning! Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy.

The defense needs to be a top-five unit, preferably No. 1. For the season, I'd expect a takeaway/giveaway differential of plus-8. For the Super Bowl win, I'd need Tamba Hali and Brandon Flowers to cement the turnover battle. I'd like at least four turnovers.

Hey, Ryan Succop! I need no less than three field goals. Charles, Hillis and the defense will handle the rest. And like that, Kansas City can win a Super Bowl!

What, hard to grasp? Who expects Cassel to be the main catalyst for the Chiefs in 2012? It's all you hear. The Chiefs are better, BUT.

Good morning! Happy Friday! Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news.

Kansas City Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt seems to be getting it. He can't step out of his father's shadow by being consistently invisible. He can't be the owner he's capable of being if he's always letting others be the face of the franchise. At some point, Hunt had to steal a few moves from the more progressive owners in pro sports. That he's doing so now shows how far he has come in a relatively short time.

What's in a number anyway?

Apparently a lot when it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs.

In Kansas City, some numbers are officially off-limits. Other jerseys are "unofficially retired." Then there is a third group of numbers that many people believe should be retired.

Good morning! Welcome to Arrowheadlines. We have gathered your Kansas City Chiefs news from across the internet. Enjoy.

Cassel and the Chiefs are in the no-more-excuses phase of their football existence. Though Cassel is a cool customer, the pressure is on. He has to win. He's been there three seasons and is the question mark on a team that's pretty stocked with talent and playing in a division -- and conference, for that matter -- that can be won.

Cassel is back from a broken hand that ended his 2011 season with six games remaining. Had he stayed healthy, Kansas City could have won the AFC West, which was ultimately claimed by the 8-8 Denver Broncos.

The Chiefs announced a slew of player transactions Wednesday morning, including the signing of two more draft picks and four free agents.

Three of the four free agent signees were tryout players from last weekend's three-day rookie minicamp.

Of Kansas City's draft picks, second-round selection Jeff Allen (6-4, 306) and fifth-round pick DeQuan Menzie (5-11, 202) signed four-year rookie contracts.

"To tell the truth, we were thinking about this when we were celebrating the 50th year of the franchise," Hunt said. "It was important that we celebrated, along with the rest of the AFL ... the Chiefs franchise was in Dallas at that point and were the Texans.

"But as we were doing it, we felt a tug for what we would do three years hence, because we really wanted to celebrate our history in Kansas City as the Chiefs. The celebration today is about 50 years in Kansas City. It's not about the team or the league. It's about Kansas City."

"What I can say passionately is that I want to win a Super Bowl," Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said standing underneath the chandeliers and historic six-foot wide clock that hang from the Station's central arch.

"It's been a long time since Kansas City has enjoyed the celebration that goes with winning a Super Bowl and I desperately want to win the Lamar Hunt Trophy and then the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which my dad named..."

"...I'm always impatient," Hunt said when asked to provide his own championship timeframe. "I want to win today and tomorrow, and it can never come soon enough. I've also been around the business long enough to know that you have to have some patience and if you lose your patience it will result in mistakes that set you back."

Good morning! Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy!

Chiefs great Willie Lanier was a special guest at the final practice of rookie minicamp Sunday afternoon, taking in most of the session from midfield next to GM Scott Pioli.

Lanier was one of five Pro Football Hall of Famers in town this weekend for the Chiefs 2012 Rookie Class Luncheon, but made it a point to attend practice as well.

"We lost a great corner but I feel like we brought in another great corner that's used to playing man-to-man coverage," Flowers said. "Stanford Routt, I think he's going to be a key addition to us."

In that sense, Flowers is starting over. He knew of Routt, who as a member of the Raiders played against the Chiefs twice a season. But he didn't know Routt personally or what it would be like to play with him.

The process of getting to know Routt as a person began last month when the Chiefs started their off-season conditioning program. The process of getting to know Routt as a player begins Monday, when the Chiefs hold their first full-squad off-season practice.

Good morning! Welcome to Arrowheadlines where we've gathered your Kansas City Chiefs news from across the internet. Today's stories include a final look at the rookie minicamp and more. Enjoy.

Orientation is over for the Chiefs Rookie Class...

"...We got a little something done, got them introduced to our system, to the way that we do things, what we expect of them a little bit," Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel said of Kansas City's rookie class...

"...Tomorrow morning, they're going to be doing individual drills with the veterans. Then, they're going to lift in the second lifting group, which doesn't have a whole lot of guys in it anyway, and then in the afternoon, they're going to be in the classroom and doing player program information, so they get to continue what we started. Good morning, and happy Mother's Day. Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news.

In the last two years, only Calvin Johnson, Roddy White, Larry Fitzgerald, Mike Wallace, Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd have more receiving yards. Only Johnson and Greg Jennings have more touchdowns. All of them except Fitzgerald and Lloyd have played with better quarterbacks, in better offenses.

And have you noticed what Bowe hasn't done the last two years? No suspensions, no stupid quotes, not even the hint of his success driving him to the destructive habits of his youth.

Look closely, and you see a grown man handling his business the way it should be handled.

Bowe's Reputation Is Earned, But His Show Has Matured from KC Star

Because the new Collective Bargaining Agreement doesn't allow contact during minicamp, first impressions of the new faces were largely of the superficial variety. First-round pick Dontari Poe, who was broken off from the group for individual workout sessions, is a mountain on two legs. Second-round pick Jeff Allen, a left tackle at the University of Illinois, appeared perfectly comfortable at left guard. And Wylie? Wind him up, watch him burn.

For Poe, it was just the start of what promises to be a long process to become an accomplished player.

"I learned a lot on the first day," Poe said. "More than I thought I would. But it's all a process, so I'm doing the best I can day by day.

"I'm trying to learn everything I can. There's a big mental part to this game, and the learning curve in the NFL is pretty big. You really don't do too much of this kind of technique in college. I'm just trying to come in here and learn the mental part of it as much as I can now. The physical part will come to me."

Good morning and welcome to football (or at least players in pads)! Rookie minicamp begins today and continues through the weekend. We have information on that and more in today's Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy!

Each of the team's eight draft picks will participate in this weekend's minicamp, regardless of their contract situation.

Practices begin Friday and run through Sunday afternoon. Helmets are allowed to be worn and the offense will line up against the defense, but no contact is permitted.

A handful of first-year players with no pension credits (less than three games experience on the 53-man roster or injured reserve in a single season) and at least 10 tryout players will join the rookie class for camp.

Chiefs Rookies Arrive For Mimicamp from The Mothership

At running back, they signed veteran Peyton Hillis and drafted Cyrus Gray in the sixth round. Together with Jamaal Charles' return from last year's knee injury, that makes a crowd.

At slot receiver, the Chiefs picked Devon Wylie in the fourth round. Wylie also will get a look as a kick returner, a job he could wind up sharing with Javier Arenas.

Whether or not these moves were aimed at McCluster, together they would seem to suggest his roster spot is in serious jeopardy.

Good morning! We are almost to real football (and by "real football" I mean a rookie mini camp that's nothing like real football)! Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy.

Jamaal Charles wants to put to rest any fears the Chiefs and their fans might have about his ability to return from last season's knee injury as one of the NFL's premier running backs.

"If you're worrying about me not being the same, just look out for me this year," Charles said Tuesday. "I'm hungry. I want it this year. I've got the passion for it. I just can't wait to play football. I can't wait to bring stuff back to this community and show them how much we can win. I feel like this is a year for us that we can go all the way."

Chiefs' Charles Pronounces Himself Healed And Eager To Play from KC Star

Charles' toughness goes overlooked because of his smaller stature and limited workload.

Though Kansas City's coaching staff has been mindful of Charles' carry count, and has often been criticized for being too cautious in their approach, Charles has averaged nearly 16 offensive touches per game since 2009.

He's never strayed from playing hurt, particularly during the 2009 campaign when he'd run to the sideline and pop his shoulder into place before re-entering the game.

In a perfect world, the Chiefs will be able to use Breaston's versatility in week-to-week game planning against opponent matchups.

Should Bowe's contract situation be resolved in an timely manner, Baldwin take the ever important second-year leap and Wylie show the ability to contribute as a rookie, Breaston's position flexibility could make him Kansas City's wildcard - especially if TE Tony Moeaki can return from knee surgery at full strength.

Good morning! We have reached the post-draft news void. Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy.

Innovation from the Chiefs was nothing new to the Bills, so forget that as a reason for the Kansas City victory. Gambini was on target in writing that KC's "multiple sets was no secret to Buffalo" and even most Chiefs players would concur, despite some comments following the game that "we fooled them." While Chris Burford agreed that whatever innovation Stram and company brought to the game, it wasn't enough to turn the tide, no matter a sportswriter's perspective or whatever an emotional player might say in the joyous moments just following a win.

Good morning! Today's Kansas City Chiefs news is mostly reaction to the NFL draft. It will be nice when the rookie camp fires up so we have something new to talk about. Enjoy.

Crennel's first message to Poe, when he arrives in Kansas City for a three-day rookie camp that begins Friday will be not to worry about personal statistics and not to pay attention to what's being said about him publicly, for better or for worse.

"The biggest thing for Poe is that he's going to have to be patient," Crennel said. "He can't really listen to what everybody else says. He's got to listen to what his coaches say. If his coaches tell him he's doing a good job, then he has to understand he's doing a good job. If his coaches tell him he's doing a bad job, then he has to understand he's doing a bad job."

Good morning! Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy!

At some point over the next few months, likely sometime in August, all the thrills of draft day will become a distant memory for Poe.

"Training camp," Dorsey laughed, recalling the first time the NFL humbled him. "It's never easy. You've got guys that have been in the league 10-12 years, training camp is where the guy in line is just as good as you, at least as good as you think you are.

"It's going to be a transition for him, but we're going to try and work with him and hopefully he can help us out."

Poe Should Look To His Right (Or Left) For Rookie Advice from The Mothership

Scott Pioli has rebuilt the Chiefs by deftly selecting productive, hard-working players in every stage of the draft. This year, Pioli appeared to deviate from the philosophy when he selected Dontari Poe in the first round, despite questions about his productivity at Memphis. However, it's impossible to find 346-pound defenders with this combination of size, strength and athleticism, so it's a worthwhile gamble with the unique upside.
