Fear The Fin Elimination Rage Thread

Team Teal is now out of the playoffs, in what is officially the shortest playoff run in team history (prior to this season, previous Sharks first-round eliminations were in 6 games). Provided here is a place where you can pretty much let out your anger, rage and disappointment at the team. Whether it is wishing Antti Niemi could make a few more timely saves, Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski score a few more points, or Jay Woodcroft to be soaked in diesel fuel and have a lit match thrown on him, you are free to do so here.

Though this is a place to vent, the rules of the site still apply: keep it civil, and personal attacks are not tolerated. Otherwise, feel free to hate away!

Per the show's Facebook page: "On today's show we catch up with Drew Remenda, analyst of the San Jose Sharks and kick it old school (well early 90's anyway) with talk of your fav vintage Shark."

Show starts at 11 AM PST/2 PM EST. Can be listened to on the Sportsnet.ca link in this post's headline, or on the post that will go up on Puck Daddy in the next half-hour or so.

Fear The Fin Nove(rge)mber OT Thread

So, I'd like to start this month's off-topic thread with a cheap plug.

A few months ago, SB Nation picked up several editors from a notable technology blog who were looking to start up their own venture. While said editors have been doing work over at a placeholder blog, the fruits of their work the past few months have been launched today, as The Verge.

Hlvuv_medium

The site is a general tech news blog - you'll get coverage from stuff like cell phones, computers, tablets, televisions, video games and other related fields. The real secret sauce, however, is in the comments section of every article. Since the site is owned by SB Nation (or now Vox Media, to highlight they're no longer just about sports), the same comment tech in SBN sites like Fear The Fin has been carried over to Verge's comments. The comments will update in real-time and the same commands we use to read and mark comments on SBN sites (such as Z and Shift-A) are usable there as well. Not only that, logins are shared between Verge and SBN, so you can simply re-use your SBN account if you want to comment on the site, and not need to sign up for yet another site account.

So here's how the new taco promotion replacing 4 in the Net will work - if the Sharks score in the last minute of the second period, a code will be shown to the audience that they have to text to. Each person who texts the code will receive the coupon for the two free tacos.

Included in the link is also a list of Jack stores across the Bay Area that will accept the coupon.

The newest Sharks lousy day-job commercial, posted on Facebook. Don't need an account to view it, for you really private folks.

Round Table has discontinued their program of free and/or discounted pizza every time the Sharks score four goals at home. The reason? The Sharks have allowed a competiting pizza place - Amici's East Coast Pizzeria - to sell their wares at HP Pavilion this season.

Hat tip to Working The Corners commenter Jeff for this link.

The parent company of the Sharks (but not their owners - see here for clarification) has renamed themselves after the team. The operator of the Sharks' business and manager of HP Pavilion is now Sharks Sports and Entertainment, effective today.

No, I did not mistype that. The former Sharks president and CEO (who's still part of the Sharks ownership, mind you) has emerged as as the leader of a group looking buy the NHL-owned Coyotes and keep them in Phoenix.

(And yes, he'd have to sell his shares in the Sharks' ownership in order to buy the Coyotes.)

Hat tip to James Mirtle for tweeting the link.

According to David Pollak via Twitter, Sharks have acquired James Sheppard from the Minnesota Wild for a 2013 third round pick. He's a LW - perhaps DW found the third liner he needed?

The 2011 results of ESPN's annual fan survey of which team is best in the four major sports have just arrived. The Sharks managed to land as #13 out of 122 teams, a spot lower thank last year's rank of #12. Of note, opinion of ownership is ranked 7th best and stadium experience is 9th.

(Keep in mind these are fan surveys, so it's not like ESPN pulled the numbers out of their ass - their method for calculating the surveys can be found here)

To compare how well the Sharks did:
* They're the 4th highest NHL team ranked, with the Lightning (#2), Penguins (#10) and Sabres (#11) higher.
* Within NHL teams, they're the best Pacific Division team. In order, Sharks fans are more confident of their team than either Ducks (#23), Coyotes (#28!), Stars (#46) or Kings (#55) fans.
*And in the Bay Area, the Sharks are the highest ranked team. The Giants (#33) trail them by a score; you then have to drop far to get to the A's (#84), Warriors (#89), 49ers (#90) and Raiders (#104).

History gets it done. Another great commercial from the NHL, but I'm probably biased in saying that...

Sharks Late Night Confidential #6, taped last night.

Hey guys, remember when I said the reason Versus and NBC don't give the Sharks more on-air love is because there's nobody in the Bay Area watching games? This is why.

If we're not showing up for our own local broadcasts, I hate to wonder how national broadcasts must be doing in the area.

So disappointed in Vinny right now. One of my favorite ex-Sharks, but probably not any more.

The History Will Be Made commercials return this year, and one of the first features the '94 Sharks and Jamie Baker's famous goal.

"It’s just something with Boston," Thornton said. "It just seems like they have a horseshoe. We’ve seen the [Milan] Lucic cross-check to the head [of Maxim Lapierre] earlier, and there’s no disciplinary thing.

"It’s just something about Boston and the disciplinary [process] is on their side. I’m not sure why that is. I’m not assuming that Colin’s kid is on the team and that’s why, but it’s really bizarre."

Joe Thornton on the Chara hit on Pacioretty and the ensuing lack of suspension.

Hey Joe, how do you feel about throwing that full tank of gas into the fire of this debate? Jesus.

Down Goes Brown tackles the tough issue of fighting in the NHL, with an added digression on a certain Shark who was in the news recently.

New DGB article. Poor Ian White gets an admittedly fumy crack in this one.

First video from the duo since Bloge began producing videos for The Score, whose videos do not like SBN embedding. As you might be able to deduct from the title, a former and current Shark are in this one.

Self-explanatory headline. As one might guess, the topic is the Sharks' struggles this season.

To cheer us all up after last night, here is Corey Perry scoring an own-goal, from the other end of the rink, via a botched pass. H/T to Puck Daddy for posting this and Megalodon for retweeting it.

Just a quick FYI, but if you own a PlayStation 3, you can now download the NHL GameCenter app for the system. It also does GameCenter Live, so if you would rather stream games to your TV rather than your PC monitor, you're in luck.

over 1 year ago 2296_s_tiny Nael M. 3 comments

No, not the controversial check Jumbo took on Perron, but rather the pictures teams take of the players every season. You have one guess as to which Shark is in this one (hint: he might not have seen this coming).

over 1 year ago 2296_s_tiny Nael M. 3 comments

Self-explanatory. Wysh and the guys at PD like the horn, but the use of Rock and Roll Part 2 gets the Sharks docked down a few spots.

New Bloge Salming/Down Goes Brown video, now with a cameo by a Shark. Should be easy to figure out who once the song gets swinging.

Any suggestions for a caption? Mine: "Varying degrees of awkward."

Apparently, Pierre LeBrun's been at Sharks training camp the past few days. Here is a video of him interviewing Jumbo Joe.

Pierre LeBrun takes a look at how the Sharks will be handling their all-Finn goalie tandem. Biggest surprise in the article: Niittymaki was actually called in for permission to sign Niemi.

H/T to Mirtle for pointing out this article on Twitter.

76 games will be broadcast on CSNCA, which combined with the 5 broadcasts exclusive to Versus will mean one Sharks game (December 9th at Buffalo) will not be on TV (for now).

Also, studio show's hosts this year will be Hedican and Ratto, barring some sort of omission in the press release. (UPDATE: Press release has been updated to include Reiss in the studio.)
