Apparently, Pierre LeBrun's been at Sharks training camp the past few days. Here is a video of him interviewing Jumbo Joe. Original link if this embed doesn't work.

LeBrun on the Nitty/Niemi situation

4

Pierre LeBrun takes a look at how the Sharks will be handling their all-Finn goalie tandem. Biggest surprise in the article: Niittymaki was actually called in for permission to sign Niemi. H/T to Mirtle for pointing out this article on Twitter.

CSN California schedule announced

10

76 games will be broadcast on CSNCA, which combined with the 5 broadcasts exclusive to Versus will mean one Sharks game (December 9th at Buffalo) will not be on TV (for now). Also, studio show's hosts this year will be Hedican and Ratto, barring some sort of omission in the press release. (UPDATE: Press release has been updated to include Reiss in the studio.)

OT: Chris Chelios retires

2

No, this is not a joke or a Down Goes Brown post. Chelios is actually retiring - he'll be taking an as-of-yet-undetermined front office position with the Red Wings. Let us now observe a moment of silence for the last NHL player born in the Mesozoic era finally retiring.

McLellan to be inducted in Swift Current Broncos HOF

Tonight, the Swift Current Broncos - the WHL team Todd McLellan started his coaching career with - will induct him into the team's Hall of Fame

Sharks win Dick Dillman Award

2

The Sharks are this year's Western Conference winner for the team with the best media relations staff as judged by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Washington won the Eastern Conference honors, which you might be able to surmise from the URL. It's no Stanley Cup, but the name of the award is certainly a lot funnier. Hehe, Dick Dillman.

Jarome Iginla to the San Jose Sharks? Why It Makes Sense for Both Sides

I'm only linking this so we can play my new game: What The Heck Is This Writer Smoking. Just name a substance, and give some evidence from the article as to why the writer of this article would taking it.

New Down Goes Brown/Bloge Salming video. The part about punching a Red Wings fan's baby will cheer you up. ...well, it cheered me up, at least.

Enhanced security for round 3 games

44

Word of warning for those of you going to games 1 and 2: the security at HP Pavilion for the Conference Finals will be beefed up quite a bit. General gist: there will be metal detectors, large bags are prohibited and you're recommended to show up early. H/T to tersa on the Sharks LJ community for the tip.

Ortmeyer a Masterton finalist

5

Nice news for Sharks fans - Jed Ortmeyer has been named as one of the finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player "who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey". Ortmeyer was nominated for his continuing to play game while having to receive treatments for his heart condition. The other finalists include the Capitals' Jose Theodore (who came back from his infant son dying) and the Lightning's Kurtis Foster (who you'll remember as the guy whose leg got broken by Torrey Mitchell when Mitchell hit him from behind after an icing). One Shark has previously won the Masterton - Tony Granato in 1997, when he made a comeback with the Sharks after suffering a brain injury the previous season.

Gary Peterson on Thornton's injury

2

For those that don't get the deadwood version of the Merc, Gary Peterson decided to take his shot at writing a Sharks column today (Purdy and Kawakami must've been too busy with March Madness). It's standard fare on Thornton's injury, his reputation as being unable to step it up, and the usual blah blah yackety smackety. Nothing special, but the observation on Joe's declining production in each season since the trade is interesting, or at least something I hadn't realized until now.

ESPN.com's Lamest Banner Awards

2

I'm sure there's probably some lingering bitterness over the Western Conference Regular Season Champs banner, so here's your chance to let it out - ESPN is doing a contest where fans can submit photos of the lamest sports banners ever. That being said, I think the Sharks banner, while pretty silly, gets outclassed in the lame/useless category by some of the beauties in that ESPN link. Seriously, 100 consecutive sellouts?

February OT Thread: Superb Owl

via www.bbc.co.uk See? It's a owl. Ain't it superb? In all seriousness, we can celebrate that after today the NFL will no longer dominate the airwaves (unless you're a fantasy football junkie)....

Mike Chen to start writing for From The Rink

5

BoC writer and fellow Sharks fan Mike Chen is moving on from his Kukla's Korner blog to take over From The Rink for James Mirtle (who himself moved on to writing for the Globe and Mail's hockey blog). Congrats to Mike on his new position!

2

If anyone thought the NHL's regular-season games in Europe were a short-term experiment, guess again. The league wants to expand to six teams next fall, up from four, and have approached the following clubs to gauge their interest: Minnesota, Carolina, Boston, Columbus, Phoenix and San Jose. Sources from all six teams confirmed as much but also stressed that it doesn't mean for sure they are going over. It remains early in the planning stages.

Pierre LeBrun on the possibility of games in Europe next season. No. Just no.

The Plight of the Californian Hockey Fan

Fear The Fin reader mymclife put together a great piece on the hell fans of the California teams get from other hockey fans. Good read.

WTC: Heatley's historic night, Joe Ike fired

53

New WTC post from Pollack. Of note: *Heatley's +6 night is the best for a player being on the ice for all his team's goals since Richard Smehlik had a +6 for Atlanta back in 2002. Also, the Heatley-Thornton-Setoguchi line's combined plus-minus went from -12 to +2 thanks to that game. *Some observations on Jason Demers' bad night, including the Nabby shove at the end of the game. *Joe Ike was apparently let go, according to Greg Jamison. Team got rid of 8-10 jobs during the off-season, and dedicated PA announcer seems to be one of them. The guy doing the PA last night was Danny Miller, who you may recognize as the contest and promotion guy during TV breaks. *McLellan with some comments on the team's defense and whether the Thornton line would break out that night. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be in the corner depressed about Joe Ike being let go. :(

Randy Hahn interview on Kotaku

3

The Sharks' own Randy and Drew are returning to do the commentary for 2K Sports' NHL 2K10, and video game tabloid blog Kotaku decided to interview Randy to get some insight into the process of recording commentary for sports games in general.

BoC's Mike Chen on the Sharks' situation

+

Good insight on why exactly the Sharks' problems aren't as big of a deal as some folks make them out to be.

Sharks owners named 4th best by SI

6

Sports Illustrated has just put out their lists of the top 5 and worst 5 owners in each of the major sports, and the Sharks' ownership group, San Jose Sports and Entertainment, was named the 4th best NHL owner. H/T to Puck Daddy for the link.

The FIRST Battle of California

3

With the excitement over a potential BoC in this year's playoffs, might as well quickly point a Sharks-Ducks series would actually be the SECOND Battle of California - the first was in the 1969 playoffs, where the Kings beat the Oakland Seals 4 games to 3 in the Western Division semifinals. With many folks incorrectly saying this year would be the first playoff series involving Cali teams, might as well point this out - especially since this is the 40th anniversary of the original BoC.

For those of you that missed it in the GDT, here's that fake Nabby Twitter account again.

ESPN.com loves The Todd

+

ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun put up an entry on his blog singing the praises of our beloved coach Todd McLellan, including asking why he isn't being considered for the Jack Adams Award this season. H/T to Puck Daddy for pointing it out.
