Marcus Trufant: 2011 Season Restrospective Video. The inspiration here is obviously guys like Aaron Aloysius and JMPasq's prospect videos. The plan is to do these for as many Seahawk players as I can. Is this something people would be interested in? If it's something people are interested in, do you have any suggestions for formatting based off how this video went? I'm already planning to add a buffer picture at the start and I'm going to try to go longer after each play so it's not so herky jerky (although it can be tough depending on what the broadcast does).

FO's SackSeer doesn't like Courtney Upshaw

40

Courtney Upshaw ranks very low, which isn't a huge surprise if you're familiar with SackSeer. Pass rushing would only capture part of Upshaw's value anyways. I thought it was interesting that they mention Robert Ayers in his summary, that seems to me like a good comparison for Upshaw.

It's not quite as good as Clemons', which is understated and great, but for a Niner it's pretty sweet.

Seahawks Run Blocking Schemes

A look at some of the Seahawks' run blocking schemes and their effectiveness against the Bengals last Sunday.

Is this holding?

Profiles in futility

2

"No team has been worse on the road than the Seattle Seahawks. After being shut out in Pittsburgh, 24-0, the Seahawks have now: Lost five consecutive road games by more than 14 points Lost 10 of their last 12 road games by more than 14 points Lost 16 of their last 19 road games by double digits Have lost 23 of their last 28 road games"

Jovan Haye Cut

2

Probably the most interesting cut so far unless you're Beekers and then, hey, Vernon Gholston!

Questioning Bradford

2

Chase Stuart of PFR has done a pretty good job of consolidating all of the arguments against some of the hype surrounding Sam Bradford in this post. It's hardly a condemnation of Bradford's rookie season but it might be a reason to hope the Rams aren't about to start a decade of dominance with their first overall pick leading the way. The takeaway line is probably this: "It was a fine performance by a rookie, but one that says little about how the rest of his career will unfold."

Free Aaron Maybin

9

Apparently he was already shopped around and no one offered anything, so that shows how interested the Hawks are, but I can't help but think he would at least be interesting to look at as a Leo. 228lb is too light though, he'd have to get back up to his listed weight of 245lb I'd think.

Best NFL Broadcast Team?

NFL Network is pairing Mike Mayock with Brad Nessler for their prime time regular season games. Off the top of my head I can't think of a better booth in the NFL.

PFR's 2011 Draft Preview

I think it's always good to remember that 90% of the players drafted next week will amount to jack all. This is a fun way to visualize that!

Video of Mallet Under Pressure

19

Via Rob Staton of Seahawks Draft Blog. My amateur take: Mallett's problem isn't his footwork or ability to throw on the run. What hurts Mallett is his lack of escapability. His extremely limited ability to evade a defender keeps him from being able to find space to set his feet. It's not that he can't throw on the run, he can, it's that he's not quick or agile enough to try. He throws off his back foot not because he has poor fundamentals but because he's not able to buy himself time to do anything else. Fortunately for Mallett he has what might be the strongest arm in any level of football. He can get away with throwing off his back foot because he's still able to get more oomph on the ball than some NFL QBs get with a perfect pocket. Thats only part of the equation of course, but his accuracy doesn't suffer too terribly. Watching the video, more often than not Mallett's innacurate throws under pressure are bounced well before the receiver or launched over the receiver's head towards the side line. To me they seem to be throw aways, he rarely makes a dangerously innacurate throw. The pick at 6:09 is an example of this gone awry, the throw is tossed well over the receiver's head but not well-over enough and the Bama safety is able to make a great play on the ball. Theres no way around it, Mallett is molasses slow and it presents a glaring problem. Like Rob says in his post it's something that a team will have to live with and work around at the next level, but I do think it's manageable. And if he's able to develop any of Big Ben's unsackableness, something he has both the arm and size to learn, he could be unstoppable.

1992 Season DVOA

2

"Previously, only two teams had pass offense DVOA below -45%: the 2005 49ers (-57.9%) and the 2004 Bears (-51.2%). The 1992 Seahawks had pass offense DVOA of -71.0%." Not that it comes as a huge surprise (although maybe a little, because holy crap are those numbers bad) but the '92 Hawks were the most unbalanced team Football Outsiders has charted so far. It's worth a read though since they go on to say lots of nice things about the defense, and who doesn't like to read nice things about Tez?

Secondary Coach Jerry Gray to Take Same Position at Texas

19

College Football continues to peck away at the Seahawks coaching staff.

"Billy Cundiff Had 20 Sacks This Year"

2

Burke has been slagged consistantly for not including special teams in his team efficiency rankings and posts like this make that exclusion even more confusing. At least you can't say he doesn't understand the value of special teams.

Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan fined, not suspended.

3

"Johnson was fined $8,333 per punch thrown, with Finnegan fined $25,000 for being punched." I was pretty interested in how the NFL would come down on this. I think I like the decision but I'm not sure what kind of precedent it sets.

Brock Huard's Chalk Talk

1

These are apparently nothing new but I'm just finding out about them. Brock selects a play or two from the past game and diagrams them on the chalk board. They're a pretty cool way to spend five minutes.
