JRHL Standings Update

Another Monday, and the leaderboard is holding steady.  It seems there is a correlation between division leaders and team names featuring Japers' Rink handles.  If the playoffs started tomorrow:...

JRHL Standings Update

I'll step up to the plate this week.  Great races in the Langway and Gartner Divisions.  Meanwhile, even with AO on the sidelines, Killer_Carlson is running away with the once-proud Labre Division....

"Flash is probably two weeks away - not cleared for contact quite yet, but close. I think there's a good chance that when he's back, Laich gets bumped down to the 3rd line, as he's a better fit on an energy/checking line than Flash and he (Laich) gets most of his goals on the PP anyway (not a great 5-on-5 guy). One thing to remember about Flash is that Bruce loves him (way too much for my liking, but seriously - he'd adopt him if he could, I think)."

J.P. the leaky faucet, over at DobberHockey.com, ruining any chance I get full trade value for my 8th-round draft pick in the Japers' Rink Hockey League.

NY Times on the 'Percy Position'

How the 'Percy Position' drives the Vikings and Peterson, by Chris Brown, NY Times The Fifth Down Blog. September 18, 2009. Sorry if this has been posted already. I took a quick look around and didn't see it. Take some time and click on all the links describing Percy's role at UF. If you only have time for one additional click, make it this one. The sweeps the Vikings have been running and in particular Percy's WR screen TD are literally exact replicas of Gators plays. (Harvin's TD against the Buckeyes three years ago, for example, is reminiscent of his TD Sunday). Up next for the Vikings: the Percy Counter. Exhibit 1. Exhibit 2.

The most complete Alexander Semin highlight video I've seen. I figured Sasha could use some love after (1) the Japers' Rink consensus found him to be the least valuable Young Gun, and (2) a FanPost was devoted to Semin trade scenarios. Excuse the terrible music.

Darren Dreger at TSN.ca: The Flyers Disagree with NHL's Reading of Pronger Deal

34

Earlier this morning, Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada filed the following from his Twitter account: Bill Daly on Pronger contract: "The relevant date is the June 30 before the extension becomes effective. So that's June 30, 2010...Yes, its an Over 35 deal, and yes, every year will count against the Flyers cap even if Chris retires." Impressed Daly was up at 6 am. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly's comments were then confirmed by CSNphilly.com. The latest wrinkle is Darren Dreger's blog post, notable passage: The Flyers disagree and interpret the CBA language governing the "over 35" clause differently. Sources say the Flyers' lawyers are now aware of the league's stance and are debating this issue. Can we expect the Flyers to challenge the league on the CBA's interpretation? If so, will the Flyers use some of the same logic as Mc79Hockey in this blog post? UPDATE, 4:15pm CDT: Ken Campbell and The Hockey News contacted Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. Campbell's report can be found at this link, under the title "Flyers Won't Fight Pronger Cap Hit." See quotes from the story in the comment section below.

International Free Agents?

20

The story out of Toronto this morning: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is in hot pursuit of Swedish Elite League goaltender Jonas "The Monster" Gustavsson, and is also in discussions with Gustavsson's teammate, 29-year-old Farjestad captain Rickard Wallin. Could Wallin or another international center become a target for GMGM and Caps management? A senior VP for the Leafs described Wallin to the Sun as a "good two-way player who has played over here before" (with the Minnesota Wild). Wallin led Farjestad in scoring each of the past two seasons, and was of course a teammate to the Caps' latest Swedish center project, Marcus Johansson. What are the drawbacks to signing international free agents? Have the Caps gone this route before? I'd read that Gustavsson is still subject to the entry-level contract requirements, but I'll defer to someone else on whether Wallin's two previous NHL seasons affect his contract status. [Edit: Wallin's entry-level eligibility has expired, per Sombrero Guy below.] Are there other international C's floating around that would be worth the Caps' time, money and salary cap space?

NC: As a Caps fan I have to laugh at the comment regarding your man-crush on the Pens. Did you get the same reaction from Pens fans when you did your running stories on the Caps all of last year? Scott Burnside: No. I think it all stems from my suggestion a few years ago the Caps should be one of the teams that should relocate before the Pens. Caps fans have long memories, look at how long they got on Larry Murphy and Sergei Gonchar after they left town. Hey, it's their team, they're protective of it. Reasonable answer from Scott Burnside during his 4:00pm EST ESPN.com chat.

Nicklas Backstrom played what the two Capitals' beat writers, from the Washington Post and the Washington Times, are calling the best game they have seen from any Capital this season. That's saying something considering Ovechkin plays for this team and he had 56 goals, but they're probably right. Backstrom had three assists and was the best player on the ice every single time he was out there. He was marvelous. Even Caps coach Bruce Boudreau was at a loss for words.
