MMAmania.com "WWE fan dies in cousin's chokehold"

http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/WWE-wrestling-fan-dies-at-Wrestlemania-28-party-in-rear-naked-choke-hold-by-cousin-040212

A Louisiana man died at his own "Wrestlemania 28" party after he refused to "tap out" of his younger, much smaller cousin's "rear naked choke hold," causing him to stop breathing, police said.

Stephen A. Arceneaux III, a 24-year-old from Destrehan, was pronounced dead at 10:39 p.m. Sunday night, The Times-Picayune reported.

Arceneaux had invited a number of friends to his home to watch the pay-per-view professional wrestling event.

He and his 14-year-old cousin began wrestling on an inflated mattress at the party and the teenager, who weighed just 110 pounds, placed his arm around the 220-pound Arceneaux's neck.

Witnesses said Arcenaux was in the hold for 30 to 40 seconds, but refused to give up or "tap out."

When one of the witnesses saw Arceneaux turning blue, they told the youngster to let go, but by that stage he had already stopped breathing, the report said.

Arceneaux's girlfriend tried unsuccessfully to revive him before he was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing.

"It's bizarre," said Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes. "We're still investigating it. But when you have violent horseplay like that, it just goes to show you that anything can happen."

MMAmania.com Cesar Gracie: Joe Silva told us to get fights done, you gotta call 'em out

Diaz-yell_medium

Many mixed martial arts fans and pundits had mixed reactions to Cesar Gracie screaming at Nick Diaz after his UFC 137 main event win over B.J. Penn, who told his fighter to "call that mother- f***er out!"

Well, apparently Cesar had to speak that way, or Nick wouldn't have understood him. He meant no disrespect to reigning welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, it's just that Diaz only speaks a special language, "209ese."

Speaking to Mauro Ranallo on "The MMA Show," Cesar elaborated:

"Well what's going on is unfortunately for me, I had a mic on and I didn't realize that or else I wouldn't have said that. Why did I say it? That's the language these guys speak. Before the fight, after the weigh ins, we were told by Joe Silva 'if you guys want it, you guys call people out. That's how the fights get done, you call em out," and I wanted to make sure that Nick knew that. I speak several languages. I'm speaking to you in English, so if I spoke Japanese or Portuguese or something, you wouldn't understand what I'm saying. When I speak to Nick, I have to speak in '209ese' and that's the language he understands. If I said 'Hey Nick, would you like to explain your position and articulate how you would like to fight Mr. St. Pierre,' he wouldn't know what the hell I was talking about. That was directed at him (GSP), I didn't think he was going to hear it obviously. This has nothing to do with GSP, I actually like the guy."

Makes sense to me.

"Newfanese" is a dialect only a few can understand, so I can appreciate the 209 having their own way with words. IE: "Hows ya getting on! Not bad by what ya at da weekend now den? Few beers down to the store ya know. Dont be contrary dere now and come get on er. Taker easy by!"

What are your thoughts on Joe Silva apparently telling them to call people out? I wonder if the UFC matchmaker had the same chat with Chael Sonnen at UFC 136 just a few weeks ago.

The plot thickens...

MMAmania.com Cesar Gracie: Nick Diaz respects BJ Penn because he uses technique and isn't a 'juice head'

Bj-penn-training_medium

Tell us how you really feel!

Outspoken mixed martial arts trainer Cesar Gracie dishes the dirt to Middle Easy about his star pupil, former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz, who fights ex-division champion B.J. Penn at UFC 137 on Oct. 29 in Las Vegas.

How did Diaz react to the announcement of his new opponent?

"He wants to fight GSP. He wants to beat that guy up. But BJ Penn is a different story, I think he has more respect for BJ. He isn't a juice head and he actually tries technique in a fight. Georges St. Pierre is the bigger fighter, but [Penn] is the better fighter."

Diaz was originally booked to challenge for St. Pierre's belt in the event's headliner, until Dana White demoted him as punishment for missing consecutive pre-fight press conferences.

Carlos Condit was yanked from his bout against "The Prodigy" to fill in for the Stockton slugger, prompting "Rush" to declare the "Natural Born Killer" a more dangerous test for him.

Gracie responds to that, and a whole lot more, after the jump.

MMAmania.com Bas Rutten's take on the UFC/Golden Glory situation....and it almost makes sense.

Bas took to "Twitlonger" today to voice his opinion on the Golden Glory/UFC situation, and after reading it, it almost makes sense!

Here's a clip of what Bas had to say

Many people have been asking MY view on what happened with StrikeForce and Golden Glory. Finally, after hearing from the fans and fighters involved, I thought to write what I though.

First thing we heard was: “Dana said that it was the problem from GG management, that they don’t want the checks directly to go to the fighters”. But then there is suddenly a picture from Marloes Coenen’s check on the Internet with her name on it, a check that she cashed herself.

Some will ask, “Why does GG do business like this?” Well, it’s for their own protection of course, but it probably started because some checks from Japan started to bounce from some organizations. And if they didn’t bounce, the fighters would be able to get them cashed 6 or 8 weeks later. Since fighters want their money right away, and GG loves their fighters, they said “No problem, we pay the fighters from our OWN money, pay their trainers and sparring partners, and then when the money comes in, we simply deduct everything from the check that is paid, this way everybody get’s paid”.
I know for a fact, 100% true, that they STILL need to get money from some organizations. The fighters got paid, but GG didn’t because they paid the fighters out of their own money. And some people say that they are crooks? Please explain this to me, who else, what management, give me one name, does this?

As a fighter, this would be something really cool, but even more for the trainers, because, ask trainers how many times they get paid by their fighters? You will be amazed with how many do NOT. I know fighters who became World champion in big organizations, even the UFC, and they never, yes, you read this good, NEVER, paid their trainer (OK, I might be wrong 1 or 2 times from the at least 10 or 15 times, but I am pretty sure I am not wrong). It sickens me and I would love to mention names, but out of respect of their coaches, I won’t. I hope those fighters read this, so they know that I know.

Anyway, these problems don’t exist at GG, at least not when the management is taking care of this.

So we know now why GG does this. And of course when GG heard that the UFC wanted to pay their fighters directly, and that they otherwise didn’t want to do business, GG right away said “OK, no problem”. And that’s why you saw that check from Marloes Coenen popping up.

So what is the real reason then that they let the fighters go?
Well, because we don’t have an answer now, I started speculating and thinking about everything, that’s something you do when you don’t have answers.

The truth is, I don't exactly know, but what I DO know is that Alistair Overeem was in a beautiful spot. When he would win the tournament, his contract would be over and that would put him in a really good spot.

MMAmania.com Machida teaches us his flying front kick...in 2009

Machida flying front kick.avi (via ariesas)

I had originally posted this video as a fanshot, but I think most of you guys dont check the fanposts regularly, and I really wanted this video to be viewed by as many of you Maniacs as possible!

There has been alot of talk lately about Mr. Steven Seagal and whether or not he has been teaching Brazilians crazy front kicks. The man has been getting a ton of attention from media and fans, and I for one dont believe for a second that Seagal is the mastermind behind Silva's and Machida's recent knockouts. I'll admit that I didnt go on youtube and discover this video, but another MMA site had this video posted. I didnt mind sharing because it was uploaded to youtube in November of 2009 for everyone to see.

Anyways like I said, this is a video of Machida in 2009 giving a lesson on his flying front kick that KOd Randy, and ultimately retired him. Unless Seagal is the one holding the camera and shouting out instructions, than I think this video shows that no, Seagal did not teach Machida a flying front kick.

MMAmania.com UFC Quick Quote - Dana on GSP/Silva "It's never even been discussed"

Gsp_silva-side-by-side_medium

It's a fantasy fight. Alot of things have to happen before that fight would happen. It's never even been discussed.

Dana White comments on the GSP/Anderson superfight on last night's edition of MMA Connected with Showdown Joe. Interesting comments from the Pres, considering he has told fans he is setting up that fight if GSP beats Jake. Have the GSP haters been too quick in saying GSP is refusing this fight? Or is the Champ's mind solely on Shields?

Check out the full interview with Dana here

MMAmania.com Bas Rutten - "What planet does Seagal live on?

Bas Rutten shares his thoughts (via twitter) on Steven Seagal apparently teaching Andeson Silva the infamous front kick. Rutten tweets:

Never ever seen this, wow, haha

From now on, that's the weapon to watch out for from Silva, almost no hip movement so u couldn't tell it was coming

Seagal now claiming he taught Silva that kick? And he REALLY believes this? wow, again, WOW!

I bet u he really believes what he says, its the funniest thing ever, EVER!

thought it was a skit first, like Saturday night live, but then realized it's not. "He contacted me to teach me deadly stuff", Haha, tears!

He taught him a front kick to the face? he invented that? Nobody else knows this kick yet? What planet does he live on? OK, lets NEVER talk about this again, lets NOT do this, I WILL address it ONCE on Inside MMA though, but that's it. Party on!

I saw Ariel having a smirk on his face, that's why I really thought it was a joke, I am not kidding, Inside MMA is coming up! Hahahaha!!

This is pretty funny stuff coming El Guapo himsefl. I first heard the criticism from Bas on a Canadian sports station (either TheScore, or Sportsnet) which had an audio clip of Rutten talking about Seagal's claims. Rutten was literally cracking up laughing and openly mocking Seagal for even thinking that he could create a front kick from a Thai discipline that has been around for hundreds of years. Im trying to find the audio, but not having much luck!

MMAmania.com Chaos in Costa Rica: Hermes Franca vs Ferrid Kheder video from 'Xtreme Vale Tudo 5'

You know the old saying, never leave it in the hands of the judges. Well, apparently in Costa Rica you can't leave it in the hands of the promoter either.

Former UFC fighter Hermes Franca battled Ferrid Kheder at Xtreme Vale Tudo (XVT) 5 en route to what should have been a clear unanimous decision win for the Brazilian.

Instead, he was named the loser, causing the mass confusion seen in the video below (via Middle Easy):

So what happened? Hear from Franca and watch video of the actual fight after the jump.

MMAmania.com British Columbia Medical Association Misdiagnoses Mixed Martial Art

A good read from Showdown Joe's website regarding how the province of BC has labelled Mixed Martial Arts compared to other sports such as Hockey, Football, etc.

I thought these facts were pretty funny and interesting regarding the number of deaths in MMA. Of course the number of deaths in a major promotion that is sanctioned by a well run state of provincial athletic commission is zero.

A small excerpt:

A further look into the twenty sixth “Catastrpohic Sports Injury Research” study conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we see some staggering numbers into sporting fatalities that the BCMA may want to look into. To help them save time, I will list them below:

  • Football: 104 deaths and 531 non-fatal and serious injuries
  • Soccer: 7 deaths and 10 non-fatal and serious injuries
  • Cheerleading: 3 deaths and 102 non-fatal and serious injuries
  • Basketball: 2 deaths and 17 non-fatal and serious injuries
  • Ice Hockey: 2 deaths and 17 non-fatal and serious injuries
  • Wrestling: 2 deaths and 56 non-fatal and serious injuries
  • Gymnastics: 1 death and 12 non-fatal and serious injuries
