Inside the Draft, Part 2: Building the Board
I have been meaning to write this FanPost for over a year now and here we are a week away from the start of the 2012 NFL Draft. In Part 1, I went in-depth into how a scout with Pioli connections scouts a player and the requirements for a scouting report. In this section I will talk about how a player is graded and typed and how that translates into the final draft board that Pioli uses to make his selections. I will also talk about the importance of the Combine, Pro Days, and individual workouts in the scouting process. This information is primarily from New England Patriots Director of Player Personnel Nick Caserio and his annual pre-Draft meetings with reporters. Here is a video link on his discussion of draft cards, which is part of the system that Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick implemented in New England that I will go into further detail below. Follow me after the jump...

Inside The NFL Draft, Part 1: Scout School
From the FanPosts. Great stuff. -Joel
I have been meaning to write this article for over two years now, and my excitement for the upcoming NFL Draft has driven me to finally put my thoughts into words. This will be part of a two-part "Inside the Draft" series where I will take you through the behind-the-scenes work that goes on leading up to the Draft. I will then follow with how scouting reports are utilized and transferred to the final draft board, which is used to make the ultimate decision of who to select.
The information I present to you here will be based on interviews and articles by current NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah. During his brief respite from the league, he operated a website and Twitter account called 'Moving the Sticks," where he shared a lot of information about the scouting process and what went into his final reports. Jeremiah worked as a scout under Phil Savage, who got his start as a scout under Bill Belichick in Cleveland. Thus, we may assume that Jeremiah's scouting style is similar to what Pioli expects of his scouts. Jeremiah has since been re-hired by Savage in Philadelphia and his site (and all of its great information) no longer exists. Though I cannot provide you a link to this goldmine, all the credit for this information is his.
Luckily for all you draftniks out there, I took notes and will go into detail on two positions that the Chiefs are likely to target this year. Follow me after the jump...

Dayne Crist to Visit Kansas
Looks like we are in the running for a new QB.
Another coach takes issue with Harbaugh's tactics
Todd Haley got hounded by the media for exchanging words with Raven's coach John Harbaugh after a preseason blowout loss. Now Ram's coach Steve Spagnuolo is taking issue with Harbaugh's tactics. Grab your pitchfork, Mabel -- it is time to give Spagnuolo the Haley treatment.
Aubrayo Franklin: Overrated?
A name getting tossed around a lot around here. Is he worth the money he is going to command? You be the judge...

Hilarious stuff from SBNation's EDSBS.
Prep "Star" Rankings and the NFL Combine
Interesting look at how last year's NFL Combine participants were rated out of high school by recruiting websites like Rivals.com. The article is geared more towards KU fans, but it is still interesting for those who are fans of both college and pro football. Good read on a slow news day.
Mike Vrabel on Jim Rome Show
Coming up at the bottom of the hour. I'm guessing he is talking about the CBA (or lack thereof). Listen on 610 AM sports radio or 610Sports.com
Be Careful What You Eat at Arrowhead/Kauffman
"Arrowhead Stadium

Vendors with critical violations: 56%
Inspection report excerpt: One location with five critical violations during its last routine inspection had, among other problems, several hot foods not being held at proper temperatures. Inspectors had workers either discard or reheat certain foods, including cooked funnel-cake fries."
Kauffman Stadium
Kansas City Royals
Vendors with critical violations: 62%
Inspection report excerpt: Inspectors cited one location with multiple violations for having several items that were either above or below safe temperatures; they found food debris on knives stored in a knife rack."

Bucs Release some veterans, some could interest Chiefs
The Bucs just released Chris Hovan (DT), Shawn Murphy (OG), B.J. Askew (FB), Arron Sears (OG), and Sam Paulescu (P).
Shawn Murphy has a Chiefs connection in that he was drafted by Bill Parcells in the 4th round of the 2008 NFL Draft. B.J. Askew could also get some interest. He is a solid run blocker at FB, is great catching the ball out of the backfield, and the Chiefs could use an upgrade at that position.
Corey Mays second highest tackling inefficiency in the NFL
ProFootballFocus.com looks at the LBs using a metric called Tackling Inefficiency Rating (TIR) that is designed to see "how efficient they were in getting their man to the ground once they attempted a solo tackle."
The Patriots Adalius Thomas was rated the worst in the league out of the linebackers, and the Chiefs' own Corey Mays fell to #2. Some interesting names on the lists of bests and worsts.
Chiefs, Brian Waters help in fundraiser
"We're incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support from teams like the Lions, Vikings, Eagles, Dolphins, Falcons, 49ers, Browns, Chiefs, Broncos, Jaguars, Rams, and Redskins, players like Brian Waters, Boomer Esiason, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and our friends at NBC, who donated two of the signed jerseys." -- Mike Florio, ProFootballTalk.com
The fundraiser was for Florio's 17-month-old cousin who had a liver transplant in December. Memorabilia from players and organizations was donated and auctioned off by PFT to benefit "Baby Mason" and raised nearly $17,000.

PFT: Broncos Parts Ways with DC Mike Nolan
"Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan have "mutually decided" to part ways."
Wow, surprising move from Josh McDaniels.
Chiefs All-Decade Team: Defensive Ends
Following the trend from around the NFL blogosphere, I decided it was time to name the Chiefs All-Decade team, AP style. We still start by voting for each position and I will be posting polls over the next few days. The data will then be compiled and will comprise the first ever official Arrowhead Pride Chiefs All-Decade team.
We will vote for 11 offensive players and 11 defensive players, as well as HC, GM, LS, KR/PR, P, and K. Players who receive 10% of the vote or more at that position but do not win will be named honorable mention. Once all the positions have been voted on, the winners from each position will be placed in another poll -- Chiefs MVP of the Decade.
I will alternate between offense and defense on my FanPosts since most of the offensive picks are less controversial. We will then hit special teams and the coaching staff. Now its time for defensive ends. To be eligible for voting, the player must have started a game at DE this decade (sorry R-Kal Truluck) and started a majority of their games in the NFL at that position. Two players will be chosen, so the two players that receive the most votes will be named the Chiefs DEs of the Decade. Polls will close in 30 days since I don't know how quickly I will be able to get these polls up.
Player profiles and stats are available after the jump. Feel free to comment to back up (campaign possibly) for your vote. The source for all positions/statistics will be pro-football-reference.com. Thanks for participating and feel free to rec to keep this alive. I know some of these picks may be obvious, but I wanted to keep it democratic nonetheless. If you see someone not listed, please let me know in the comments. Chances are they didn't start a game, or maybe started more games at another position (e.g. DT vs. DE), but I have missed a few.
DISCLAIMER: I know some of these names will bring back some painful memories and possibly a little anger. For some anger management tips, click here.
Here are the winners so far:
- Quarterbacks (Winner: Trent Green - 94%)
- Strong Safeties (Winner: Greg Wesley - 76%)
- Free Safeties (Winner: Jerome Woods - 80%)
- Running Backs (Winner: Priest Holmes - 95%)
- Fullbacks (Winner: Tony Richardson - 97%)
- Cornerbacks (Winners: James Hasty - 44%, Brandon Flowers - 32%)
- Tight Ends (Winner: Tony Gonzalez - 95%)
Polling has closed on these positions so if you didn't get to vote I apologize, but you will just have to wait until next decade. **NOTE** Glenn Dorsey will be listed in the DT poll since he started 16 games there last season, meaning he started the majority of his games at that position this decade and not at DE. Thanks to all who participate!
List of 2010 Underclassmen
The deadline (Jan. 15th) has come and gone. Some surprising early declarations, and some others that many expected to come out that opted to stay in school, notably two top center prospects in Kris O'Dowd and Stefen Wisniewski. Click the link to find a complete list of those underclassmen who declared for the 2010 NFL Draft.
Jan. 18th is the deadline for underclassmen to withdraw their 2010 Draft applications and return to school.
