Report: NFL owners met secretly with Commissioner Roger Goodell

+

A week after NFL owners wrapped up their annual spring meeting in Indianapolis, a small group of them gathered in a western suburb of Chicago. Patriots owner Robert Kraft was spotted Wednesday afternoon boarding his private jet at DuPage Airport, a little less than 24 hours after arriving, according to sources. Also present during a full-day stakeout was the jet belonging to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, an unmistakable Gulfstream model with a star on each side of the tail. The kicker? Sources said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also arrived in West Chicago via private jet Tuesday, and Panthers owner Jerry Richardson was believed to be present, the sources said. The NFL office was unable to provide any details. Airport officials cited a confidentiality policy in declining to reveal information. Where the men most involved in the owners' end of strategy convened is unknown but surely the NFL's protracted labor situation was the reason for their gathering. Was a secret meeting conducted with NFLPA officials? Kraft was not available for questions as the SUV he was in delivered him to the stairwell of his aircraft. The U.S. 8th Circuit Court in St. Louis will have a hearing Friday involving the lockout. Reports last week were owners are confident they will prevail. The lockout is grinding toward a third month and Goodell acknowledged to reporters last week that "it's clearly had an impact on our fans already."

Sources: Tom Brady to lead workouts

+

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is back in town, and he'll be leading players-only workouts starting Wednesday, according to sources familiar with his plans. Brady's return to New England is in conjunction with his charity work for Best Buddies International, as he is hosting a football game at Harvard on Friday night, before riding in the Audi Best Buddies Challenge on Saturday. Brady has spent the majority of the offseason training in California as he works his way back from January foot surgery. Knowing he'd be in the region this week, he attempted to gather as many teammates as possible to join him, particularly pass-catchers. While the value of player-led workouts during the lockout is debatable, many believe chemistry between a quarterback and receiver can grow during the offseason. One could point to Brady's past work with Deion Branch and Wes Welker as evidence of that. Not surprisingly, teammates have responded, according to sources, breaking from their personal workout regimens to join Brady, who spearheaded the arrangements. For those who have been working out regularly around Foxborough, such as tight end Rob Gronkowski and receiver Brandon Tate, it's a minor tweak. For others, such as receiver Julian Edelman, it required a bit more planning. Edelman, who has mostly been working out in Los Angeles, flew in to town Tuesday after appearing on NFL Network the day before. Welker had previously said plans were in the works with Brady. "It's kind of tough just not being able to go up to the Patriots' facility and really get together and do something, but we're working on our schedules to get together and make sure we do something," he said on May 21. The schedules came together quickly and the work begins Wednesday

"Bill Belichick is a genius. He knows what he’s doing," Bodden told the Boston Herald. "Me going down this past year. Then [Jonathan] Wilhite went down. I remember those guys telling me, in some of those games, we dressed only three corners. That’s something you just can’t have. You need depth at that position. Bill knows what he’s doing with his draft picks. He knows what he wants. You never can have too many cornerbacks in this league. Teams have three, four legit wide receivers, so you have to be prepared for that. Having an extra cornerback is not wrong in my opinion."

Mankins touches base with Pats pick Solder

3

Patriots offensive lineman Logan Mankins might be at odds with the team on a contract extension, but that hasn't stopped him from lending a helping hand to rookies. Mankins said he has spoken with first-round pick Nate Solder, the big offensive tackle from Colorado. The Patriots gave Solder the number to reach Mankins, who was happy to take the call. "He seems like a great guy and I gave him a little advice and tried to help him out the best I can in the situation that we're in right now," Mankins said Monday at the Joe Andruzzi Foundation Golf Tournament at TPC-Boston. "I'm more than willing to help any young guy that needs anything. He's in a tough situation right now, he doesn't know what's going on. He has no coaches to talk to. He's just trying to make it in this league and if I can help him, I will." Mankins is also pulling for fifth-round pick Marcus Cannon. "I read the story of how he has cancer so hopefully everything works out great for him," he said. "That would be a great story if he has a full recovery and can play and have a nice career." As for his contract situation, Mankins was asked if it was naive to think he could reach a long-term deal with the Patriots at this point. "I don't know, we'll see. Shoot, the NFL and the players can't agree on anything right now, so we'll worry about that once they can strike a deal," he said. Mankins was asked if he has thought about whether he'll sign the franchise tender -- which would be a one-year deal for around $10 million -- once there is football. "A little bit, but I'm not going to say anything right now," he answered. "When we know there is football, that will be the time to make a decision."
