BREAKING: Hockey presser highlights
- Arena will be located south of Shields building (current site of lacrosse field)
- Arena to open for the 2014 season
- Division I-A play to start in fall 2012
- There will be both men's and women's teams
- Teams will operate as independents and play in Greenburg until the arena is open
- Teams will join a to-be-determined conference in 2014
- There will be 2 sheets of ice in the new arena (excellent news for youth and rec leagues)
- Intended arena activities in addition to varsity hockey: ice shows (woot!), public skating, figure skating, exhibition games (think Hershey Bears and WB Baby Pens), youth leagues, rec leagues
I-A Hockey: PSU presser this morning
I haven't seen a link to this anywhere else on BSD, so here it is from the CDT. Zero details yet, but you'd assume at least these 4 questions would be answered:
- Where will the new arena be built? How will the athletic fields be reconfigured in response? FYI, the field hockey turf needs to be replaced anyhow, so I doubt the girls would be upset if they're moved.
- Will there be a women's team? If not, what are the Title IX implications?
- What conference will we join initially?
- When will I-A play start?
What-Are-They-Thinking Bowl: 9.11.10 @ 3:40pm
Most of us will be awaiting the start of the Alabama game this weekend in the comfort of our own homes. Imagine it's mid-afternoon, and you've just finished watching the Boilers squeak one out over Western Illinois on the BTN. The beers are cold (except for the dozen or so you've already "processed"), the nachos are warm, and the grill is fired up. How will you fill the remaining hours until gametime? ESPN has the answer - you can watch these two nice boys (Mike has a point) battle it out:
Fera punts his way out of the doghouse
I would like to hear Brent Brackett's thoughts on Josh Boone's career...
Panthers MLB job is Connor's to lose
Not the most optimistic headline. How about "Unfortunate injury benefits Connor, breaking decades-long trend of setting back former Nittany Lions"?
Wow - that's so cool! What do you call it?
With all the hullabaloo about the impending Big Ten expansion scheduled to occur sometime between tomorrow and next millenium century decade year month week now!!!, I've seen no discussion of the obvious question that's been nagging me for a few years. With 12 friggin' teams, will it still be the Big Ten? Can we actually brag about academics at that point? If you have a better idea, post it in the comments, vote with recs.
Weather takes a turn for the worse
Winds will now be 20mph throughout the game. Out of the south, so my seats in row 88 of the north end zone should be fun. Arm punts from the south goal line should easily reach the north end zone. Arm punts from the north 20-yard-line will reverse course and blow backward through the uprights. Anyhow, I blame Junny.
Mostly-Possible Bowl Predictions
It's that magical time of year, when college football gurus, pundits, columnists, and blogistas have a decent snapshot of the season and start making wildly entertaining insightful inaccurate bowl predictions for those of us too stupid to look at conference standings and bowl tie-ins bored enough to read them. I accidentally read one already. The title gave the appearance that the article contained news. I soon realized it didn't, but the lead paragraph falsely implied that the rest of the article would be interesting. Needless to say, I tried it and it sucked (TM).
So rather than look around for additional, related drivel, I figured I'd drivel up a list of predictions myself. Starting with the premise that we ignore the extremely unlikely possibilities ("PSU trounces SouthernCaliTexaFloriBama to win title of greatest team ever!" or "Blue Band marches an intricate Strike-through of the Script Ohio drill, declared New Best Damn Band in the Land!"), here's what I consider an entertaining scenario for the end of the season and bowls:

Columbusians Duped, Riot Ensues
Imagine what they'll do when they find out they actually got an arm-punter instead of a QB.
ЦОРНЛЕЙ ПОБИТИ
I think that's how you say "CORNLEY SMASH" in Ukranian. After picking up his degree, getting his shoulder fixed, and deciding that football wasn't in his future, Jamelle chose Ukraine over Italy, Israel, and Argentina.
I've heard that Chernobyl is beautiful this time of year - it's actually become a tourist attraction since it's a ghost town. You can visit it for brief periods without getting too high of a radiation dose.

Everyone's favorite DA takes it to another level
Everyone's favorite District Attorney, Michael Madiera, has truly outdone himself this time: might as well have bought a plane ticket for the guy.
Jeff Knox breaks through Wanny's Wall...
...then goes back. Perhaps for his father's watch? Or maybe they have photos of him working out with Greg Robinson that they threatened to release?
Is this even newsworthy? Lord knows I forget a recruit's name as soon as I close the browser window of the last article I read about him.
Deon Butler gets a +1, rec'ed
Last line is the highlight. Deon Butler on staying in Happy Valley this spring: "That's everyone's dream - college with no classes. It just doesn't get any better." Wise beyond his years. It's all downhill from there.
Side note from the locals (am the only one?): Only half this story showed up in the print edition. It was to be continued on page B4.....maybe they meant B4 in tomorrow's paper???
So Many Stories; JoePa montage
Please, eds, if you guys are snipping videos froms last night's game, give us the JoePa montage set to The Story. I teared up every time ESPN showed it (once during GameDay, once before the game, and once after). I've got to have it in mpeg or wmv. Even my wife (recent recruit to the fan ranks) said it gave her goose bumps. We need this clip for posterity's sake - for the love of Joe!
