Thought you all might find this funny
As we all know, the Redskins traded for the 2nd pick with the Rams and the Rams took our pick and traded it to the Cowboys, thus ending up with the 14th pick. With this pick they drafted Michael Brockers, a solid DT that will fit well with their defense. Now, I'm no draft expert and I know very little about the prospects going into the draft except for the one brought up here on Hogs Haven so I looked at different perspectives of the picks on the draft through various outlets and found the one on yahoo particularly funny.
How McNabb fits with Shannahan
If you haven't heard about the McNabb trade by now you probably should not contribute to this website or even be reading this. This is a trade has shaken the NFC east division and has the spot light back onto the Washington Redskins for better or for worse. This move has probably caused more separation between Redskins fans, but we can all agree that this is going to be the biggest news of the offseason and might be the most memorable transaction that takes place in this new decade of football.
For better of for worse, McNabb will be the starting QB for the Washigton Redskins going into the 2010 season. A lot of questions come up from this move. Why did we trade a pick when we have other glaring holes? What's going to happen to Jason Campbell? Is there a reason why the Eagles let McNabb go so easily to a team in their division?
Yes there are quite a few questions that arise with this trade but in actuallity, a lot more questions are answered.
McNabb is now a Redskin
I'm pretty shocked that this happened. We gave up at least a 2nd rounder for him which we could have used for a young talent. At least McNabb is proven, but I don't really see how this is going to help us in the long run.
Javon Walker possibility
Just read an article on him over on Yahoo. I know, I know. A lot of people will look at this guy as a injury prone, below average WR that can't contribute as a starter and that maybe true. But it is also true that we have questions at the WR position. We have three young receivers in Thomas, Kelly and Mitchell. One has shown glimpses of greatness, one has been injury prone himself and one does not seem ready to come in and contribute significantly. We also have Moss who just had an average year and there are a lot of question marks on how productive he will be this year. So there is no true harm in adding another WR to the roster.
Walker also has worked with Shannahan before and had some decent numbers working with him. He is claiming he is willing to sign for the veteran minimum which is about all that anyone should be willing to spend on him. If worse comes to worse and Welker isn't worth the roster spot, we can cut him without any problems since there is no cap. So here is the question.
Cleveland trades Quinn
These actions suggest that Cleveland is looking to draft a QB in the draft to develop behind Delhomme. Seneca Wallace is obviously not the answer for them. This could be great for us. If Clausen or even Bradford is at the 4 position we have a chance to trade back and pick up some decent picks. They could even trade with the lions at #2 to pick a QB which would mean Okung would drop to us at 4#. Only negative (in terms of who this site wants to draft) would be if they trade up with St. louis and grab Bradford and the lions take okung, but this is more of a neutral for us since that is the draft order many are predicting as of right now. In any case, this is a win for us.
Come on, really?
So after a pretty dull day of shoveling snow and and evening of helping my friend move her car out of the snow, I sit in front of my computer to look at this great forum of intellegent comments and not so intellegent comments. I usually make my way to HH through yahoo starting at the front page where I notice the most searched for words today are Bill Clinton and agnostic. Hmmmm. Anyway, got to the sports section noticed that not much on the football page has changed so I scroll down and click the link to the HH homepage.
Zorn to Baltimore as QB coach
Like the headline says, Zorn will be the QB coach for the Ravens in 2010. I believe this is a good fit for him as he gets to work with a young, talented QB behind a strong Oline, run game and defense. So good luck to him in the 2010 season and hopefully he can rebuild is resume for the future.
Cleveland looking for a QB
Before anyone says anything about this post, I would like to say that I believe JC is our best option going to the next season and that drafting a QB in the first round, no matter what our line situation is going into fall 2010, would be a step in the wrong direction. This is just a possibility.
The following is based on this article:
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/01/do_the_cleveland_browns_have_p.html
Holmgren sounds like he likes what he's seeing out of this running offense. I think everyone did in the last 4 games of the season. 286 yards in a game is not an easy thing to accomplish against any team. But those last 4 games, the QB stats are a real eyesore.
Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson each quarterbacked the team to two wins in the winning streak. Their combined totals for the four games was 31 completions in 65 attempts for 363 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. That equates to a passer rating of 50.99 in a league where 80.0 is considered average.
In retrospect, Jason Campbell in his worst 4 games this season averaged almost 10 points higher. All that behind a crappy O-line and very little run support.
In any case, I highly doubt that Holmgren goes with a high pick at QB. With the talent of QB's in this draft, the horrible problems with Quinn and with his ridiculously bad draft history, he is going to probably look somewhere else. Jason Campbell would make the most sense in this case. Zorn will probably head back with Holmgren in some capacity. Why waste another few years grooming a QB with a first round pick when you can pick up a guy that ha experience, is still young and has worked with one of your men for the past two years?
It is obviously their biggest need and Bradford looks like another Quinn with the same skill set and injury problems. Clausen IMO has looked much better in terms of pro quality, but he has a chance in going #1 in the draft. In this case, the Brown's first round pick might be up for discussion.
Do I think this will happen, more then likely no, but it is something to think about and gives a whole new group of possibilities in this draft and what direction Shannahan can take next year.
"Light's Out" in D.C.
I was reading an article on Yahoo about some questions going into the preseason (Link's here) when I noticed something I had overlooked before. It is Merriman's contract year and San Diego just drafted Larry English in this year's draft. This probably means that Merriman is not going to be with the Chargers long term.
Now, how does this pertain to the Redskins? Well, we all know that the main reason why our D was not in the top 3 last year was because of a terrible pass rush. That was addressed in the offseason with the signing of Al and drafting Orakpo. But, Al was never distiguished as a sack master and Orakpo can only get so many sacks. Carter is still a great DE but he is getting closer and closer to the point of a major fall off. Not to mention, Fletcher does not have a fountain of youth to survive on (although I wish he did).
That being said, Merriman would be a great investment for the skins. Having Carter, Haynesworth, Orkapo and Merriman all being leathal pass rushing options. Orapko and Merriman can switch out and SLB and there is even the option of running some 3-4 D as well with Haynesworth having some experience at the DE spot. And after all that, Merriman is a local, so he should love to be able to play so close to home. This would make the defense the strongest in the NFC East and possible the best defense in the league. And it will help us see what we want the most, a Super Bowl win....and Tony Romo eating dirt 2 games a year.
Obviously there are some problems with this. The Chargers might decide to franchise Merriman which would require the redskins to give up at least a first round pick, although the Chargers let Brees walk, they might do the same with Merriman. Personally, I would give up a 1st round pick for Merriman, but what would you do?
