Interesting article about Ralph Friegden. Looks like Maryland may force him out and go after Mike Leach. That could be a HUGE pain in the butt for FSU down the line, don't want to see Leach in the ACC. I also laughed when they said Mike Locksley from New Mexico would be a candidate. I hope Maryland goes after him!!!

Tavaris Barnes decommits from FSU in favor of Clemson

Tavaris Barnes, longtime Seminole defensive end commitment, has flipped to the Clemson Tigers after his official visit this weekend. He gives the Tigers 21 commitments, leaving the Seminoles with 19 for 2010.

This hurts, as Barnes was at a position of need at DE. This makes Corey Lemonier all the more important. Look for Bjeorn Werner, who could play either DE or DT, to be heavily courted when he visits on 1/22/10.

Greg Hudson, current Defensive Coordinator at ECU, will be hired to coach linebackers at FSU. Jimbo Fisher continues to build what looks to be an outstanding staff. East Carolina won the Conference USA title this year and Hudson's defensive unit no doubt played a huge part in the team's success. Hudson also has a presence in the Carolina's on the recruiting trail, though the athletes he will inherit and recruit at FSU are in another league.

Hudson comes to FSU following a 5 year stint at East Carolina, where his defenses are known for their physicality, toughness, and consistency in forcing turnovers (33 in 2008). In 2009, ECU ranked 6th in total tackles with 958. They finished with 27 sacks and 17 interceptions. Prior to working at ECU, Hudson coached at Minnesota (2001-2004), Cincinnati (1997-2000), and UConn (1994-1996). He was also a graduate assistant for Notre Dame in 1993.

Following the announcement of Bobby Bowden's departure, recruiting has picked up in a big way for FSU... in the 2011 class. On the heels of the commitment by OL Trey Pettis, James Coley has struck gold in Treasure Coast H.S. with the commitments of two highly-regarded defensive backs, Lamarcus Brutus and Keelin Smith. Both are also teammates of 2010 standout LB Jeff Luc.

Lamarcus Brutus is listed by Rivals.com as 6'1", 185 lbs with a posted 4.6 40 yard dash as sophomore but is still growing into his body and developing his running skill. He is listed as a safety prospect and holds offers from the likes of Ohio State, LSU, Mississippi, UCLA, and North Carolina. Keelin Smith is listed by Rivals.com as 6'3", 185 lbs, and as a corner prospect. He holds offers from the same schools as Brutus. For those of you keeping score at home, that is an impressive offer list at this stage for two junior prospects!

Both players are highly-regarded, also fielding interest from Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, and Urban Meyer. Brutus will likely be a 4 star prospect while Smith should be as well, but has a very high ceiling with his potential, frame, and skill set. Both look to be standout players. Keep in mind that there is over a year left for evaluations of these two prospects, so any early predictions (including my own) should be taken with a grain of salt in fairness to these kids.

These two commitments are a testament to the work ethic of James Coley. With the uncertainty and rumors about Bowden behind FSU, the staff can continue to pound pavement with a vengeance. It certainly looks as though Fisher and Co. have the attention of many prospects and things are really starting to heat up with the 2011 class.

Give me your 2009 two-deep lineup for FSU

I cycled through and didn't see a post like this (sorry if I glanced over one). This doesn't have to be what the experts think, or even what general consensus thinks. Give me who YOU want to see as starters and 1st backups for FSU in 2009, and give some reasoning behind your choices.

Here's who I would like to see (starters listed first)...

QB: Christian Ponder, E.J. Manuel: I'm anxious to see how Ponder has improved in his decision-making. I think he will keep the starting job all season as long as he doesn't struggle badly- if he does, Manuel should get a shot. Jimbo has stated that he believes Ponder can be an NFL QB, so he won't be quick to pull him unless things go south in a hurry. I do expect EJ to get meaningful reps this season though.

RB: Jermaine Thomas, Ty Jones: I think Pressley will overcome Jones by the end of the season for primary backup, but he will still be recovering in the beginning of the year. Frankly though, it doesn't matter. I think Jimbo will have the luxury of rotating backs if he wants to. This is a good thing, as all three guys have a history of being banged up (some moreso than others obviously). It may or may not happen this season but I firmly believe that Jermaine Thomas will be FSU's next 1000 yard rusher.

FB/HB: Marcus Sims, Matt Dunham: I think Marcus will come around and stick with the team. Everyone gives him crap for fumbles but Marcus is a good blocker and is a decent safety-valve weapon coming out of the backfield. I do believe we have seen the last of Sed Holloway. Dunham will slide into a backup role here. Should Marcus not return, look for Jabaris Little to slide into this role. One of two things would happen: you'd either see Dunham back there (assuming he is in shape and can compete) or you'd see some two-back sets with Pressley. My guess would hinge on the latter.

WR: Bert Reed, Jarmon Fortson: Bert is a playmaker and is super dangerous in space. As long as he keeps his head on straight and stays healthy, he'll start every game this year. Fortson will be the 3rd WR in the 3-WR sets. Watch the two freshmen, Rodney Smith and Willie Haulstead, both of whom have gained praise and are both physically okay to play. They could get some reps.

WR: Taiwan Easterling, Avis Commack: Easterling's speedy recovery is huge, absolutely huge for this unit. He has the best hands on the team and is Mr. Clutch when it comes to third down and pressure situations. If he stays healthy, he starts all year. Have heard many positive things about Commack as well. He can be what we all hoped Surrency would be- big target, great athlete, fast and agile. Good footwork and route-running.**Goodman and Owens weren't included, as they are suspended indefinitely.***Also- those of you who think Louis Givens will start next year can wake up now. He has outstanding heart and is one of the fastest guys on the team, but he's also 5-8 (at the tallest) and 165 pounds (soaking wet) and has questionable hands. Just too small to be a DI starter. He'll be a situational guy and continue to raise hell on special teams.

TE: Caz Piurowski, Beau Reliford: According to Fisher, TE is supposedly going to be used more in the passing game this year. Caz will start because of his year as an OT and will help Datko and the other tackles block against the outstanding opponent DEs FSU will face this year (shout-out to FSUn on that story). His hands are pretty good and he's nothing special after the catch. Reliford is the guy I'd like to see used in the passing game. He is every bit of 6'6" and can run and jump. He could be what many of us saw in Brandon Warren- a legitimate weapon at the TE spot.

LT: Andrew Datko, Rhonne Sanderson: Datko is a man. Look to the recent story posted about him. Has All-American potential written all over him. Any OL recruits (and FSU fans) questioning Trickett's impact need look no further than Datko and Hudson. ***Backup OL are seemingly interchangeable as far as skill level but a lot depends on upper body strength and arm length at tackle. Trickett likes to cross-train them so they know each position. Sanderson looks to be a solid option at LT.

LG: Zebrie Sanders, Aubrey Phillips: This is where I deviate from some people. I think FSU's OL would be even better if Sanders and Hudson both slid inside one spot. Sanders could stay on the left side to help Datko since he has experience at tackle. He has the footwork to move inside IMO and would do well at guard (and fill in at tackle if he is needed). Phillips is the lone incoming OL that I think is ready to play. Trickett had a lot of positives to say about Phillips and was extremely happy to get him. He could probably wind up at guard or tackle, but for inclusive purposes I put him here.

C: Rodney Hudson, Ryan McMahon. Hudson's NFL future is at center, and Trickett has spent this offseason crosstraining him at the position. I say let him slide in and play the next two years at center. This is not a slight against McMahon in the least but Hudson would be more effective in the middle IMO. If he needed to slide over to guard, McMahon would obviously be very capable of filling in.

RG: David Spurlock, Blake Snider: I love Spurlock's copperhead snake disposition and his willingness to get better. I think he'll be healthy in time for the season's start and will hold down the RG spot. He has very good footwork and leverage and should continue focusing on strength. I give Snider the upper hand over Brandon Davis because frankly I'm surprised Davis is still here- he hasn't done a thing. Snider is a "Trickett guy" and Davis is not.

RT: Antwane Greenlee, Garrett Faircloth: Here's a trouble spot for me. Greenlee certainly can become a very solid starter, but will he? If he is fully healthy, both physically and mentally, I think he will be fine here. If not, Zebrie Sanders would be in this slot instead. Since I have Sanders at LG, I'll put Faircloth as the backup. Have heard good things about him as well, and you know he will be hungry to play after taking a GS last season. Again, backups are interchangable including other starters.

DE: Marcus White, Toshmon Stevens: White has a great opportunity to pick up where Everette Brown left off. He has all the tools and has an amazing work ethic. He has put in a ton of time to improve this offseason, so let's hope it translates to the field. Stevens has drawn a good amount of praise from Jody Allen and Todd Stroud but needs to continue adding weight. His athleticism will get him on the field, especially in speed-rush situations when White is taking a blow.

DE: Kevin McNeil, Jamar Jackson: McNeil will fly under the radar this season as people focus on White's hype. He has good technique and rush skills but needs to get stronger and play with consistency. McNeil hasn't been able to stay healthy so far and neither has Jackson, which is worrisome. Ding Ding Ding- that's the bell of opportunity and it tolls for you, Brandon Jenkins. Look for Demonte McAllister to be on the field every so often in speed-rushing situations, especially if injuries occur.

DT: Justin Mincey, Budd Thacker: Mincey is in better shape than he has been since he arrived. He's gained good weight and looks ready to embrace a starting role. He has good experience. Thacker will see the field quite a bit too, but no longer as a starter. Needs to add bulk/strength and learn to back up his talk. Everette Dawkins will be in the mix as well, assuming he isn't needed to flip back to DE.

DT: Kendrick Stewart, Moses McCray: Stewart got some very valuable experience last season and in the prior bowl game against Kentucky. He's very athletic and agile (he's the one who can do the standing backflip) and has added good weight and strength. McCray will be a presence as well and may overtake Stewart or Mincey by the end of the year. I also believe Jacobbi McDaniel will see the field this season but not a whole lot.

OLB: Nigel Bradham, Mister Alexander: Just unleash Bradham. It doesn't matter where he lines up, just unleash the beast. Mister Alexander can hit like a mack truck but can he stay healthy and make the transition to LB effectively? Recardo Wright will also be in the mix.

OLB: Dekoda Watson, Nigel Carr: Watson is the best player and best leader on this defense. He should perform very well and become a first-day NFL draft pick, assuming he stays healthy and that elbow doesn't give him more trouble. I love Carr's game as well, if Watson weren't in the picture he'd be the starter.

MLB: Kendall Smith, Vince Williams: Smith is underrated and overshadowed by the other two, but he can become a force in the middle. He just needs to be consistent and keep to his assignments. Williams will make an impact as well, whether in relief on defense or on special teams.

CB: Patrick Robinson, AJ Alexander: Robinson had a disappointing season in 2008 and will hopefully rebound in 09. He's the best CB on the roster but he will still be tested this season. Hopefully his INT stats resemble 2007 and not 2008. Alexander can flat out fly but can he cover effectively? Will he turn into another Michael Ray Garvin and be a liability? Hopefully not but if so, Greg Reid will overtake him by the end of the year.

CB: Ochuko Jenije, Dionte Allen: This one's shaky. I like the progress Jenije has made and he deserves his shot. He has good instincts but can he keep the big play mistakes to a minimum? I just want to see what a healthy Dionte Allen can do. Is that too much to ask? Again, keep an eye on Greg Reid. He's working hard.

SS: Nick Moody, Korey Mangum: Moody should be interesting to watch. Fans are high on him but he hasn't done a thing just yet. This will be a learning year regardless. I don't like thinking about Mangum being back there, he just doesn't fit well IMO. Depth is a little scary here. Dammit Willie Downs.

FS: Jamie Robinson, Terrance Parks: Robinson was very encouraging this spring, hopefully it will translate into the fall. He has good instincts and speed but again, can he limit the mistakes and big plays? We'll find out early and often, as the secondary will be tested frequently. I'm not sold on Parks at FS, I'd rather see him at CB personally. Maybe one of the freshman can help out, it would either be Harley (since he's had a leg-up working out) or Demps (in great shape, drew praise from Stroud), but hopefully it doesn't get that bad. Demps is a guy I'm keeping my eye on- he could be something special down the line.

P: Shawn Powell, James Esco: Powell has the job. No clue who among the returning kickers would back him up. I'm confident in Powell despite his inconsistent past.

K: Dustin Hopkins, James Esco: I think Hopkins wins the job and is a 4 year starter at K for the Noles. The other guys worry the hell out of me so thank goodness for Hopkins coming in.

PR: Greg Reid, Bert Reed: Yep, I think Greg Reid wins the PR job. Read recently where a member of the FSU staffing crew stated that Reid could win a couple of games on his returns alone. That's pretty lofty praise, but based on what I've seen on film and at the all-star game, I think he'll win it over Bert Reed.

KR: Greg Reid, Bert Reed, Jermaine Thomas, AJ Alexander: Reed is super fast and Reid has the best chance of any freshman skill player to make a large impact- I think it will be on special teams. Also watch for Jermaine Thomas, AJ Alexander (lightning in a bottle but questionable hands) and maybe even Patrick Robinson (more speed).

Saw both lists on Tharinger forums, linked to the Willis discussion. I think FSU has a great shot at landing both of these guys, especially since they are coming to SS (I think I read where Willis' mom is coming as well). Things are looking good!

**also of note- remember that story teaser on another website that Brandon Willis was suddenly favoring UF out of nowhere? Notice that UF isn't in his top 5. Hmmmm.

First post here... Predicted 2010 Recruiting Class

I finally joined Tomahawk Nation. Love what you guys are doing here so I wanted to become a part of it. Thanks in advance for the way you run your site! I hope this is posted in the right place, sorry if it isn't. I thought I'd initiate myself by posting a predicted 2010 recruiting class for FSU with a bit of analysis. Here goes... I will go ahead and include 25 players as I've read where FSU can take on a full class this year despite the sanctions, particularly if Holloway and Sims leave the team combined with other expected attrition. This is going to be long, bear with me!

Hi all,

Predicted 2010 class for Florida State:

QB (1): Jeffrey Godfrey (Though I don't really see a need for one if we land Haggins and Green, I think FSU will take one QB in this class and it will be Godfrey of the Miami trio. Jimbo will go all-out for Christian Lemay in 2011 regardless, and I don't think Godfrey would scare him away. Lemay is unbelievable).

RB (2): Debrale Smiley (I think he fits the mold of a bruising RB that Jimbo covets, should be a great change of pace back); Brandon Gainer (another of the Miami trio, great back who fits Jimbo's system very well).

WR (3): DJ Johnson (closest thing to a FSU lock in this class, outstanding athleticism and elusiveness, playmaker written all over him); Christian Green (UF is coming on strong but I think FSU will win him over. Has potential to be a #1 WR in a few years, also dangerous as a QB threat on trick plays); Kenny Shaw (underrated prospect, great route runner and open field threat).

TE (2): Neil Basford (looks to be exactly what Coley wants in a TE. Very good blocker and good hands); Dan Schneider (FSU's h-back of the future. Fits that position perfectly, could be a real weapon. All-around solid guy).

OL (3): always the hardest position to predict with Trickett at the helm, as FSU could easily add a couple of guys off the radar right now. That's what I'll predict, that Trickett signs two more who are yet to be known in databases (sorry for the copout here). Ed Christian (love this kid's work ethic. Should fit Trickett's mold perfectly and can add more weight to his frame); Two other prospects who are yet to be known names.

DL (6): DE Tavaris Barnes (I think he can rotate between DT and DE, IMO his best bet will be at DE due to his athleticism and quick first step. Needs to learn how to play lower, will make an impact a few years down the road); DE Corey Miller (one of my favorite prospects in this class. He is a GREAT leader and has tremendous potential. Can make an immediate impact in the DE rotation, part of the Byrnes trio); DE Darious Cummings (outstanding prospect who could and should eventually grow into a DT. Love his pass rush skills); DT Brandon Willis (listed as a DE but will grow into DT at FSU. Another of the Byrnes trio, I love the way he plays. Another immediate contributor thanks to the Byrnes strength program and system); DT Anthony "Amp" McCloud (would be in contention for a starting spot immediately, depending on how quickly he learns the defensive scheme. Has NFL potential); DT Damien Jacobs (sleeper from Louisiana, has great size and quick first step, knows how to play low but is still a bit of a project. If LSU offers, could be in trouble here. The other Louisiana DT Porter would be great as well but LSU usually keeps who they want in state).

LB (3): Jeff Luc (Yes, I think FSU will land him in the end. It's going to be a knock-down, drag-out fight for him, but I think FSU lands him. Physical freak, immediate contributor); Christian Jones (another Nole legacy, could grow into a DE/LB hybrid, absolutely love his game. Immediate contributor); Telvin Smith (not very confident on him anymore, LSU is a major player as are a couple of other SEC schools. Lowndes kid, hopefully Ed Christian will be in his ear. Will take time but he could make a good impact in a few years. Could develop into a rush end if he can put on a good bit of weight, but will likely stay at LB).

DB (5): CB Lamarcus Joyner (Yes, I think FSU lands Joyner in the end after a knock-down, drag-out fight from Ohio State. He is a unit-changer and would contend for a starting spot immediately since P-Rob will graduate. Best player on FSU's board and #1 target in my book); CB Terrence Mitchell (#2 CB prospect and a great talent. Would love to see FSU land him, and we are in a good position to do so. Outstanding cover skills, could challenge for early PT); CB Terrence Brooks (underrated IMO, another very good prospect with good cover and ball skills. Would be great to see FSU land him- along with the other two CBs, it would be up for the best CB class in the nation); S Chad Abrams (underrated but picking up more interest. Can flat-out hit but needs coaching on wrapping up instead of just flinging his body at people. Looks good down the line); S Jarred "Scooter" Haggins (Athletic as all get out but looks like a safety to me. Can also play QB in a pinch. Odell's nephew, should look good in garnet and gold).

Other notable prospects

RB Marcus Lattimore: I am extremely confident that FSU will be in it until the very end but I just don't think we will pull him. I think FSU finishes second here, though I would absolutely love it if he came to Tallahassee. Still a decent chance FSU lands him because Jimbo and Coley will work very hard on him until the end.

RB Gio Bernard: Love this guy's game but I think he will head out of state. I think Gainer fits Jimbo's system better, but Bernard is another one I'd be very happy with if FSU landed him. RB is such a deep position this year, you really can't go wrong and FSU will get theirs.

RB Eduardo Clements: If FSU hasn't pulled out already I think they will soon. The other guys are higher on the board and if our coaches really wanted Clements, he'd be a commit right now. Hopefully it doesn't bite FSU but I think he is in the mold of Chris Thompson, and give me Chris Thompson every day of the week.

WR Chris Dunkley: DJ Johnson will be in his ear as would Joyner if he commits, but I think Dunkley winds up at UF in the end. Heck of a player, would be awesome if FSU could pull him.

OL Chaz Green: Gator or Volunteer in the end. Would love to see him at FSU but I seriously doubt he comes here.

OL TJ Leifheit: My second-favorite OL prospect on FSU's board but I think he'll stay in state, probably at UNC.

OL Brandon Linder: My favorite OL prospect on FSU's board, Miami-bound IMO.

DE Corey Lemonier: I love his game and I think he'll be one of the best players in the state by the end of this cycle, but I think he goes elsewhere. FSU isn't dead but it's a long shot.

DE JR "Ego" Ferguson: I really don't know what his status is now that he is enrolled at Hargrave. Is he eligible to play at a school in 2010 or will it take another year? Anyway, I think he stays up north.

DE David Perry: If FSU takes another DE, it will be Perry. Very raw but has great upside, among the best of the DEs. Project but worth the risk.

DT Richard Ash: Would LOVE to see FSU get him but he'll go to UF, has essentially stated so publicly.

DT Calvin Smith: Zooked into going to Illinois in the end.

DT Jericho Lee: undersized DT who has drawn comparisons to Jacobbi McDaniel. From Godby, which is a shame, and may never see the field because of academics. Likely sign-and-place.

DT Antonio Ford: Very interesting prospect from Pahokee, looks like a solid DI player to me. Down further on the board and may be an option if FSU misses out on other guys.

DT Shawn Green: Another legitimate option if FSU misses on higher-ranked guys.

LB Kendall Moore: I love this guy's game. Would love to see him in FSU's class, ideally instead of Smith but I think he'll go elsewhere, maybe stay in state to UNC.

CB Demar Dorsey: Can't understand why people want him in this class. Sure he has great speed, but he is a total project at the position and supposedly has character concerns. Hopefully FSU looks elsewhere.

CB Merrill Noel: cooled on FSU, will likely go elsewhere. Could be the next Alphonso Smith, could be a bust. Won't be at FSU though.

CB Keion Payne: always mentioned in conjunction with Joyner. Seems like a decent prospect, wouldn't mind seeing him at FSU if we miss out on Brooks and if it helps with Joyner.

ATH Jeremy Deering: Could be part of FSU's class, looks like a true playmaker who will gain more attention soon. Don't know much about him but he looks like an underrated prospect who will play DI somewhere.

ATH Jamius Gunsby: Lots of chatter about him being a potential QB. Don't know much about him but he will likely gain more attention soon.
