Maniacs,
Please vote below for the winner -
1) In reference to Jason McDonald's MMA future/status after the loss to Tom Lawlor :

3) In reference to the upcoming Mir - JDS match :
Also to sub someone, you need to take them down.
And i’d wager my bank account that if he gassed himself out on the cage tryin to get cro cop and roy nelson down that he cant do it to Junior. What mir needs to do is sign on to fight schaub so they can double KO each other and try to hang on to their departing souls.

Why Mania Trips Work : Casa de Deuce Edition
Maniacs,
Ever since the inaugural Philly trip in 2009; I have made it a point to reach out to the other members of our awesome community through the annual Mania trips.
This was in the hopes that I could establish some friendly acquaintances with people who love MMA like I do.
I do have friends who appreciate sports but when it comes to MMA -
I am in search of a wolfpack.

I was lucky enough to meet people who treated me with decency and respect during each of those trips :
Kevin
Mac
Big Zino
Jay
Yan
Deuce
(and other lurkers / occasional posters who came to the Philly and Las Vegas trips).
And then there are some regulars who I communicate with outside of this public forum (whom already have my respect).
I hope to meet them on a Mania trip someday.
So...
I land in AZ for Easter weekend and this goateed, ginger man picks me up at the airport and lets me stay at his place for free (no homo).
Friday's Itinerary : IT'S IN THE HOLE.
Quintero

When you look this pretty in pink - you too can wear a sharp (gay) looking hat.

Deuce tees off.

Highlights -
* Deuce's man cave consists of 2 flat screen HDTV's, a bar and a sports memorabilia wall (autographed jerseys, pictures and trading cards).
* He also has a music library consisting of 25 straight days of music. Ridiculous.
* The next door neighbor asked me 4 consecutive times if I drank. I replied no each time. He then gave me a drink.
* I could see Mars and Venus in the clear AZ sky. Nice.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's Itinerary : Now, this is the plan. Get your ass to Mars.
Sedona

Highlights -
* I ate rattlesnake meatballs, cactus fries, and barbecued bison kebob. I drank saspirilla (sweet root beer).
* I learned that a "crunchy" is slang for a tree hugging hippie.
* A shop owner who looked like this :

ignored our presence in her store until Deuce asked for a price quote on a knife.
She gave him the numbers but also refused to let him see a more expensive knife (she assumed that he could not afford it).
Her words of wisdom after staring us down? - "You get what you pay for!"
She then went back to ignoring us.
That's what I get for hanging with a crunchy Deuce.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's Itinerary : Guns don't kill people! But they sure help.
AZ Indian Reservation

Highlights -
* Deuce brags about being an AZ native and knowing his way around the desert (while wearing flip flops). And then he stabs himself on the foot with a cactus.
* I pointed my loaded guns at the guys while I asked a question.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other tidbits -
* El Jefe (Deuce's roommate) is a hopeless Cubs fan and looks like Jesus.
* AZ is full of ex-Chicagoans.
* Deuce keeps a secret snitch file (surprise, surprise). After meeting an acquaintance of his, Deuce asked me in a whisper, "Fake Chicago or real Chicago? What about his wife???"
* I have seen one of Deuce's kicks on a heavy bag. Don't mess with soccer players. Seriously.
* Kimbo Slice does not live on the AZ Indian Reservation.
Thanks for reading!

Getting to Know your Maniacs : The Pride
Maniacs,
The second person who decided to volunteer for my interview series is a regular from the NYC area. The Pride is a precocious poster who hails from America and is one of the youngest bloggers on the site.

1) What is your favorite base martial art to watch? Why?
My favorite base martial art to watch in MMA is BJJ. Watching guys like Demian Maia and Roger Gracie easily submit their highly trained opponents is a thing of beauty. That said, I hate watching people who are bad at Jiu-Jitsu. Every time I see an idiot on TUF fall off of someone's back, I die a little inside. I also hate anyone that does any 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu shit (Rubber guard, crack head control, twisters). Please kill yourself and stop naming moves (that BJJ guys have been doing for years) dumb things.
Brown belt Roger Gracie mounts Demian Maia to win in 2002, one of the exciting outcomes common to the Brazilian Team Nationals.

==========================================================================================
2) Who is your favorite fighter from that base MA? Please give an example of his/her greatest moment or a highlight you feel that captures the essence of said fighter.
My favorite fighter from BJJ has got to be Rousimar Palhares. That guy is terrifying, no one wants to fight him. As for his greatest moment, choose any of the times his opponent is screaming in pain.
My favorite BJJ competitor is Marcello Garcia. His jiu-jitsu is so pure and he is the nicest guy on Earth. I also respect how humble he is,win or lose, he never runs around acting like an idiot (See : Bravo, Eddie).

==========================================================================================
3) For those of us that are ignorant about the BJJ world, please explain Eddie Bravo and his 10th Planet BJJ terms. Compare and contrast to traditional BJJ. Why do you feel that way about Eddie? Please provide specific examples.
Eddie Bravo is a BJJ black belt under Machado and is famous for his triangle of Royler Gracie in 2003. After this upset, he used his new found fame to market his style of jiu-jitsu and make a lot of money. Most of his 10th Planet BJJ is working from the rubber guard, a term I'm sure you've heard Rogan yell out 47 times, but it also combines wrestling moves. I have a few issues with this system, the main being that only certain people can work it effectively. Bravo is very flexible, and if you cannot match this, the system isn't for you. 10th Planet can work, but it is lower percentage and seriously wears on the joints. That is my (mostly) non-bias section of this answer.

My personal dislike of Bravo comes from the fact that I think he is cocky and claims a bigger influence on BJJ than he actually contributed. After Bravo beat Royler, he acted disrespectfully. I'm all for celebrating a victory in MMA, but Jiu-Jitsu is different. Like I said earlier, Marcello is always polite and never runs around like a tool after a win. Bravo also acts like he is the first person to use an omaplata or do a high school wrestling move like the banana split. BJJ guys have been doing that stuff long before he wrote a book on it. Honestly, he reminds me of Steven Seagal saying he showed Anderson the front kick. Really? Silva didn't know that before you showed it to him? Bullshit. I could continue on this, but no one wants to read 11 pages about why 10th Planet BJJ isn't as good as other BJJ systems.

==========================================================================================
4) Do you participate in any MA today? If not, which base MA would you pick? Why? What attracts you to it?
I chose to train Jiu-Jitsu because it is the only martial art where you can 100% spar with your partner and not get injured. I've been training and competing for a little over two years.
My BJJ lineage is Helio Gracie-Relson Gracie-Phil Migliarese-John Hassett- Me. I got my blue belt after two years of training, one week after my 16th birthday. I am proud to represent Mr. Hassett in tournaments, and although I eventually plan to move to a larger academy/gym, I will always consider myself to be a Hassett's Jiu-Jitsu product.
I did my first tournament after only 4 classes and got smashed. After losing my first 3 tournaments, I started training every day and have placed in every tournament I've done since. I have competed in 20 tournaments and have taken first in US Grappling, NAGA, Grappler's Quest, Goodfight, and Copa Nova tournaments.
My proudest tournament moment is a flying triangle I did about a year ago in a Grappler's Quest. I am doing the NY Open in a few weeks, and another Goodfight in May.
My overall BJJ record is 41-16 with 27 submission victories.
Side note: I may be in NNR's division for NY Open. It's gonna be Maniac on Maniac crime!
==========================================================================================
5) Please describe your favorite offensive/defensive manuever(s) in BJJ. Provide examples (if any) in any MMA matches.
My favorite offensive maneuver is a tie between the Marcello Garcia guillotine and a D'arce choke.
A good example of the Marcello Garcia guillotine would be CB Dollaway's guillotine on Joe Doerkson.

Here I am doing a variation of the guillotine in a tournament in February (I took 2nd place) : http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=348368545215688¬if_t=video_comment
My second favorite offense move is this tricky D'arce choke from the bottom in side control, and here is an instructional vid on it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD7DVKhUU1U.
My favorite defensive move is a trick I do to prevent being mounted -
Being midgety, it is not uncommon for people to try and force their way through my half guard directly into mount. This sucks. Normally, the person being mounted pushes the leg that is slipping out of their half guard and tries to recover half guard. This works to an extent, but it really just delays the inevitable mount. I do just that until I am 99% mounted, and then I switch sides and capture their other foot in my half guard. My opponent is so focused on getting the mount that they often forget about their other foot. From there I can lift up the leg and go to either deep half or full guard.
==========================================================================================
6) List your top 3 favorite MMA fighters of all time. Why? What do you feel is the most defining moment for each fighter. Give examples.
Forrest Griffin, Frankie Edgar (Fuck you Jay), and Nick Diaz.
A) Forrest Griffin literally has nothing going for him, he is not athletic at all, his chin is not great, and he doesn't have knockout power or great wrestling. Despite all this, he became the champion entirely through his work ethic and toughness.

B) Frankie Edgar is my favorite relevant fighter right now. In addition to demolishing my least favorite fighter ever (The Cryin' Hawaiian), he is always smaller than his opponents and still wins. Edgar did what no one thought he could and became champ. Guess what bitches, he's going to do it again.

C) Finally, we have Stockton's Nick Diaz. Diaz's anger and toughness have made me a fan. He also destroyed "The Prodigy", which made me laugh.

==========================================================================================
7) List your top 3 MMA fighters on your shit list. Why? What do you feel is the most defining moment for each fighter that made you feel this way. Give examples.
BJ Penn, Jon Jones, Melvin Guillard.
A) Fuck BJ Penn. He is what is wrong with the world. BJ Penn is a lazy cock sucker and I hope he gets a 5 round rematch with Diaz. He has more natural talent than anyone else EVER in the history of the sport and his record is 16-8-2? Don't give me any of that he fought outside his weight class bull shit, it isn't Lyoto Machida's fault that BJ Penn eats too fucking much. If he had Forrest Griffin's work ethic he'd still be champ.
B) On to LHW king Jon Jones. To put it simply, he is a douche. He reminds me of a spoiled child. "Oh, I don't like people who have belts like mine! Rashad is being so mean too me!" Boo fucking hoo. He's like that hot retarded chick at a party; really fucking awesome until she starts talking. That said, he is a talented prick who is going to hold onto the title for a long time.

C) If Melvin Guillard was as good as Melvin Guillard thinks he is, he would be the champ of every division, even the ones that do not exist yet. Thankfully, he's not. He will always be a powerful striker who gets subbed by anyone with decent Jiu-Jitsu. The worst part about Melvin is his fans. "Oh, Melvin is gonna be the champion! He's gonna knock Edgar out!" Bitch please, Melvin only knocks out middle tier guys, not champions.

==========================================================================================
8) Please describe how MMA is viewed by people in your age group. How does it compare versus all of the other mainstream sports? Try to capture the feelings of the average, mainstream teen.
MMA is not followed by many teens that I know. I'd say I probably know around 500 teens, give or take, and of that 500 maybe 10 are hardcore fans. When I say hardcore, I mean they can name all the current UFC champions and watch most of the PPV's (not difficult requirements at all).
I think about 30 are casual fans, who know kind of what the sport is, but then they ask when Chuck Liddell is fighting again. They may watch reruns on Spike.
The rest have likely heard of the UFC but don't know what MMA is. They may have flipped past it once or twice, but I don't think they could name any current fighters. In short, the UFC is not as popular as Uncle Dana likes to tell us - at least not with teens.

Maniacs : What's In Your Library?
Maniacs,
The Ipod thread was a success.
I am going to shamelessly copy ST's idea and go for books.
I have heard good things about :

I am alternating between Tarzan of the Apes on my Kindle,

Michael Moorcock's The Eternal Champion in hardcover

and Starman Omnibus in hardcover.

What do you Maniacs have in your library that you recommend?
Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi, Sports related, Adventure, Religious, etc and I have seventy five words now!
Thanks!

Getting to Know your Maniacs : Jay
Maniacs,
I have decided to try out a new series in regards to our members. However, this is more MMA related and not the usual goofball stuff (mostly). I would like to try and interview various Maniacs from all over the globe.
Jay, a regular from Canada, has decided to be nice enough to put up with my very amateur stuff and give me some of his thoughts.

1) What is your favorite base martial art to watch?
Definitely BJJ. My stepson was until recently heavily involved in MT and BJJ. Outside of his tourneys, I've never watched JJ. I think I used to get more excited for his matches than he did. I love the grappling arts and prefer to watch them over the other martial arts. BJJ and wrestling are a close one-two for me.
==========================================================================================
2) Who is your favorite fighter from that base MA? Please give an example of his/her greatest moment or a highlight you feel that captures the essence of said fighter.
I would have to say Anderson Silva (and Jason McDonald). I know, who says AS is their favorite grappler, right? I like what his bottom game has become. He used to be garbage on the ground. I like the guys I see marked improvements in (i.e. Georges wrestling, Anderson's JJ, Cain's striking). The fights that made me believe AS doesn't have a weak spot anymore are the Henderson fight and the Lutter fight. He's very patient on the ground and his body triangle is the most effective one I've seen.

===========================================================================================
3) Do you participate in any MA today? If not, which base MA would you pick? Why? What attracts you to it?
I don't participate in any contact sports anymore. It just isn't worth the risk. Fighting is a young man's sport, and I am no longer young. If I had to choose a MA to take part in it would definitely be wrestling. Wrestling has always been fun. I have a friend that won't let me do anything but wrestle him when we see each other. I'm talking the whole points and time limits type of wrestling. The guy's a bit of a freak.
=========================================================================================
4) List your top 3 favorite MMA fighters of all time. Why?
Brock Lesnar, GSP, Patrick Cote. I like the gentlemen that GSP and Cote appear to be, and I liked Brock for the complete opposite. I thought Brock was funny and talented. I was half right.

==========================================================================================
5) List your top 3 MMA fighters on your shit list. Why? What do you feel is the most defining moment for each fighter that made you feel this way. Give examples.
Shit list...
A) Frankie Edgar....This fucking guy can't beat anyone decisively so we have to watch him rematch people 3 or 10 times each to figure out a winner. I've never enjoyed any of his fights and he's a boring guy outside of the cage too. He's to me what GSP is to you 'Mericans.

B) Jason Miller....How is this fuck in the UFC? I hate people that get into the UFC based on Dana's love for them. I'm looking at you Kimbo, Matthew Riddle, Leonard Garcia and Tito Ortiz.

C) Guys with long hair. Ben Henderson, Clay Guida, Urijah Faber....Unless you're in a band from the 80's, a chick or a dirty biker, cut your fucking hair. I won't root for anyone with long hair. Anyone with long hair in the cage is on my shit list.

==========================================================================================
6) Besides GSP, who is the greatest Canadian MMA fighter in your opinion? Why? What do you feel is the most defining moment for that fighter. Give examples.
Patty Cote. The guy has never said a mean word in his life. His best moment was when he took over the momentum in the Anderson Silva fight. He started owning that bastard until Steven Segal put that voodoo shit on him. Patrick Cote could very well be the Middleweight Champion if it weren't for that dirty witch they call Steve.

===========================================================================================
7) Compare and contrast the growth of MMA in both Canada and the USA. What is your perception?
I think both countries had the same explosion in popularity a few years ago. I can't speak for the US, but IMO the sport has slowed a lot in Canada (probably the absense of GSP, I know it is for me). I think the sport has grown as much as it can in its current state. I don't know what has to happen for it to get another shot in the arm, but IMO the sport has really slowed here. I blame the network deals. Up till this year I used to be able to catch a free card or a replay almost any time of day. Now if you don't have all the best cable packages you have a hard time finding fights on outside the live events.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8) Would you be in favor of MMA being an Olympic event? Who would you place on your team?
No. I don't think the sport works in the olympics. I'd watch it, but I don't think the current rules would ever be allowed in. Plus who commissions MMA if its in the olympics?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9) What is your view of the UFC expanding their weight divisions to 145lbs and under?
Hate it. Maybe they need to keep Strikeforce open and use them for the small guys. I don't know. I just don't get excited to see little people fight when I know that Cyborg could probably kill most of those guys. Sure they're faster than the other weight classes, but I just can't get up for watching them.

===========================================================================================
10) Which Maniac would you like to fight in an MMA sanctioned match? Why? Keep it real.
I'd take on any of you fucks from Mania. You all have my address. Come on down, pussies. No but seriously, I'd want to fight VM. I often find myself being jealous of his coolness. He's also probably the toughest guy I've ever seen, so if I had to fight, I would want to test myself against the best. Everyone knows that's Mike. I would DEFINITELY lose, but just to touch gloves with greatness would be worth it.

Score Settler - Who is to blame for Tate's injury?
Maniacs,
I was having a good debate with a weekend poster (a petty, lazy fuck who wants credit for discussing an MMA match on an MMA blog instead of doing his own work) who claimed the referee in the Tate vs. Rousey match should have stepped in and stopped the contest before Tate's arm was damaged.
I decided to do a quick search to see if there is any language that would support his point of view.
I found the following...
According to the MMA Unified Rules of Conduct (MURC) :
|
The following is an excerpt from the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board Regulations governing mixed martial arts rules and regulations. The MMA rules and regulations listed below are the standards by which many MMA-sanctioned states base their MMA rules. |
13: 46-24A.17 Types of Bout Results
(a) The following are the types of bout results:
1. Submission by:
i. Tap Out: When a contestant physically uses his hand to indicate that he or she no longer wishes to continue; or
ii. Verbal tap out: When a contestant verbally announces to the referee that he or she does not wish to continue;
2. Technical knockout by:
i. Referee stops bout;
ii. Ringside physician stops bout; or
iii. When an injury as a result of a legal maneuver is severe enough to terminate a bout
GIF of the submission below:

It seems that this rule - iii. When an injury as a result of a legal maneuver is severe enough to terminate a bout would certainly be applicable in this situation.
However, the ref seems to go with the interepretation of this rule - i. Tap Out: When a contestant physically uses his hand to indicate that he or she no longer wishes to continue.
How about more evidence to determine which rule is followed more consistently?
Another example of the Tap Out rule in effect :
Mir vs. Big Nog
![[IMG]](http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ojdIBmQf3ms/TuQmJfBdnwI/AAAAAAAAGrg/QN2zG4PF6-8/s1600/2.gif)
You can see that Herb is quick to stop the contest AFTER the tap from Big Nog (despite the obvious damage to the arm).
==========================================================================================
Coincidentally, there is also another example involving the same ref which reinforces the TKO by severe injury rule:
Mir vs. Sylvia

Herb rushes in and stops the contest after the break in Sylvia's arm despite Tim NOT tapping out. *Apologies for not being as awesome or technically savvy as Nostradumbass* ========================================================================================== Same ref...but he uses both interpretations in two different matches. What do you Maniacs think?

QOTW for 02/2012
Maniacs,
Usually, we have a 5 finalist vote off but the response was so overwhelmingly in favor of this quote that I bypassed the usual process and just confirmed the obvious.
Congrats to Scott1 for this winner.
I think 17 recs is a record!
In reference to Palhares - Belcher match:
Belcher better avoid the MT body kicks he likes to throw so often.
Poor Belcher, first his eye now his leg.

Update on Mania Trip 2012
Maniacs,
It looks like Las Vegas is in as a Mania Trip possibility.
However, we need a 2nd entry as New Jersey and Los Angeles are tied.
Now, these threads I put up are not just for shooting the shit but they are also legit polls on where I should seriously consider the next trip to be...
With that being said, please vote between either Los Angeles or New Jersey ONLY if you know you are in 100%. It makes things easier for me so I can set up stuff ahead of time and do my research.
Remember, all Maniacs are welcome.
Thanks!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
These were the best photoshops of Diego Van Helsing, IMO...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Now, on to the voting...
Los Angeles ?

OR
New Jersey?

***No, these women will NOT be a part of the Mania Trip!***

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tonight revealed the date and location for its fourth mixed martial arts (MMA) event on network television.
UFC on Fox 4 will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 4, 2012. No potential main event or under card matches are known at this time.
UFC debuted on FOX back in Nov. 2011, pitting its heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, against number one contender, Junior dos Santos. It took dos Santos just 64 seconds to flatten the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA)-trained fighter and take the championship belt back to Brazil.
Looking to avoid the one-minute disasterpiece, UFC on Fox 2 offered up three televised fights, two of which -- Chael Sonnen vs. Michael Bisping andRashad Evans vs. Phil Davis -- determined number one division contenders. Still, most fans came away unimpressed with three ordinary decisions, sitting through nearly 60 minutes of average action.
UFC on Fox 3, meanwhile, is still under construction. However, it features a main event between Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller that will likely determine the next lightweight contender. It is scheduled to take place at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J., on May 5, 2012.
UFC and FOX recently inked a landmark deal to deliver up to four MMA events each year, meaning that UFC on Fox 5 could still take place before the 2012 fight campaign comes to a close.
Stay tuned.
===============================================================================Another possibility was just to keep it in Las Vegas.
Remember, this trip is for any Maniac in the community. You don't have to be a "regular" or have any other special "status." You just have to like MMA and be a cool, down to earth person.

Feliz Navidad Friday
Maniacs,
Tis the season for shopping, caroling, wrapping gifts and all of that other gay shit.
For me, its always the season for some booty.
Let's take a look under OJR's tree and see what we can find?

May your chestnuts be resting on her chin...

To all of my fellow Maniacs,

And for the people at BE -

Falalalalalala, Joy to the World, Peace on Earth and I think its 75 words! Yes!

Anti Brock Movement Wants You!!!
Maniacs,
This is a response to Deuce's Pain Train thread, which is a betrayal of all things good and holy in MMA...

I have decided to offer an alternative to the Pain Train

But first, a recap of the Pain Train's idol :
It has been a long time since we have heard from Brock, right?
I saw that Brock "wrote" a book. Despite being over 200 pages, I understand that it managed to be monosyllabic from cover to cover. Congrats!
Rumor has it that Brock got his inspiration to become an author based on a gift from former UFC Champ, Cain Velasquez.

What was next for Brock after conquering the literary world?
Reality TV, of course!
DW - Ok, Brock, you ain't going back to the WWE and facing The Undertaker. You fucking appear on TUF, make Ken Shamrock look like the next Greg Jackson and pretend that you are actually going to face JDS. The Kimbo Slice fans will eat it up like so much cum in their collective sushi. Make me some money, motherfucker!
Brock - Let me think of something inspirational to say to the poor bastards that are stuck with me. I think I should close my eyes to focus my mouth breathing thoughts...now is it a chicken shits on a salad or choking my chicken until I shit?
Alas, Brock had a bout of diverticu-Idon'twantJDStobeatmyass. No resolution for the TUF Main Event. But DW thanks you for getting him another 6 figure sports car, Zuffa Zombies lemmings!
FAST FORWARD to 12/2011-
Meat Head against Horse Meat:

IF you -
* Like Overeem then ABM is for you
* Dislike Brock then ABM is for you
* Dislike WWE antics in MMA then ABM is for you
ABM =

THIS ABM MESSAGE HAS BEEN BEEN APPROVED & SPONSORED BY THE FRIENDS OF OJR.

Inaugural Douche Bag QOTW
I was thinking, that if the QOTW gets stale or boring for you… you should totally do a weekly post on the “Douchiest BE Post of the Week” with a poll and such
by Dakatak on Aug 16, 2011 11:47 AM
Who am I to refuse such a request?
I live to serve my fellow Maniacs (no homo).
There are so many gems to pluck out from the House of Dorks over at BE... but I did manage to narrow it down to a select few:
Entry #1 - Nerd Alert
Tis Excellent Sir!
Also, a little off topic, but by Plantinga fan do you mean Alvin Plantinga?
by Robert Cowan on Aug 16, 2011 6:39 AM
You’re the first person to have gotten that right!
Along with Kant studies, philosophy of religion is one of my specialities. If you work in that field, you can’t help but run into Big Al and be impressed.
by PlantingaFan on Aug 16, 2011 7:31 AM
People didn't get that that was a philosophy reference before?
Seriously, do any other Platingas exist?
by Hummus5989 on Aug 16, 2011 2:51 PM
Everyone always read it as planting a fan.
But yes, many other Plantingas exist, e.g., Cornelius Plantinga.
by PlantingaFan on Aug 16, 2011 2:55 PM

MANIA'S RESPONSE :
I dunno. A philosophy degree would allow a person to explore his existential ennui while preparing my extra foamy decaf latte.

Entry #2 - The Art of the Cyber Deep Throat
Dear BE staff...
I know we can get demanding, rude and over zealous sometimes but, thanks for putting up with our shit. The best thing about Bloody Elbow is how interactive the staff is with the fans, I cant really think of another site where writers take the time to debate with and teach the people who read their articles. The downside of that is sometimes we all start to think we're part of the staff, we forget that we're just fans and some of us just dont really know how much work you guys put into the upkeep of this site. We forget that for every 300 comment-worthy article, someone not only took time to research and write it, but took more time to moderate each and every comment that we put up. Honestly, Im just some dude with a blog that like 15 people read. There are days when I have no clue what to write, Im kind of amazed that the staff here has managed to keep things this interesting for so long.
I spent a year just reading this site everyday, too scared to comment on any articles or put up any fanposts. I let the Sherdog forum and the UG jade my view of MMA experts, I started to think they where all pompous and arrogant jerk offs. But the staff here at BE has been unbelievably inviting and informative. Some of the staff here even encourages me to write on my blog, if I dont put anything up in more than a few days I have Kid Nate telling me to "get back on the horse". As a fan of MMA and Bloody Elbow I cannot describe to you how awesome it is for someone you look up to to encourage you to do something you love. So again, thanks BE staff for putting up with our shit and thanks for doing what you guys do. Keep up the good work!
-Brian Hullaby

MANIA'S RESPONSE :
The next time that guy gets a girl in his bed
will be the 1st time. That is fucking embarrassing!

Entry #3 - The Internets is Serious Bidness!
I personally like the firm moral imperative of this site. I select for it. Lurking around on Mania for 5 minutes makes me weep for humanity.
I agree with your opening premise that there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that Dana White’s comment was motivated by homophobia (there isn’t any evidence to the contrary either) but to spin that observation into a generalized attack on Fagan — who is an excellent contributor to BE — and against BE itself is wrongheaded.
I like the fact that Bloody Elbow errs on the side of intolerant toward reprehensible social attitudes. If they occasionally misinterpret an innocent comment as a result of that vigilance, so be it.
There are plenty of blogs where they not only would never think of calling DW homophobic, they’d probably call you all sorts of gay slurs for even suggesting it. If that’s the sort of freewheeling social discourse you’re into, I would suggest spending some time here (link to Mania).
by Monte Fisto on Aug 8, 2011 11:39 AM 8 recs
Freedom of speech is a legal concept, not a social one
You will never find a more fire-breathing advocate of First Amendment rights than me. I worked for years for a civil liberties organization defending free speech — on the Internet no less.
So while I unfailingly support your inalienable legal right to call me all manner of terrible things without governmental reprisal, I also appreciate that there exists a privately-operated Internet forum where such things are aggressively discouraged.
by Monte Fisto on Aug 8, 2011 11:59 AM 1 recs

MANIA'S RESPONSE :
He is an internet free speech defender who prefers a site where there is no free speech? Could there be a bigger contradiction?
by freenow82 on Aug 8, 2011 12:38 PM

BONUS DOUCHE BAG BEHAVIOR:
I think I might join mania and test it there
by halitosis on Aug 17, 2011 8:03 PM
You can't return here once you've been there.
That’s 90% of the reason I created a new account.
by Zachary Kater on Aug 18, 2011 8:17 AM
If you’re not already there, use it freely at MMAMania, and rec every comment you even slightly smile at or nod along with – those guys are fun to mess with…
by The American Ronin on Aug 17, 2011 11:36 PM 1 recs
Anyone want to go on a rec’ing spree over there? I’ll need two other people, and we’ll need to coordinate our attacks.
by halitosis on Aug 18, 2011 8:33 AM
I got nothing better to do today
by chris81203 on Aug 18, 2011 8:58 AM
Chris, Ronin, Me, and anyone else who cares to help out, we will first rec everything on their “UFC on Fox Press conference video and updates” thread. Please reply to this before you do anything so we know who we’ve got, and we can do it fast.
by halitosis on Aug 18, 2011 9:38 AM
Of course, without commenting, will anyone even be able to tell who did it? I guess if we continue to refresh the page we’ll see them…
ninja rec’ing crew…
by The American Ronin on Aug 18, 2011 9:43 AM
But I don’t care if I’m banned from mania, as long as it affects nothing here.
by halitosis on Aug 18, 2011 9:49 AM
Being banned from there would be something of a Badge of Honor among non-mouth breathers, would it not?
by The American Ronin on Aug 18, 2011 9:52 AM
Several of my rec’s hit the 5 mark. You’re welcome and it was beautiful.
by chris81203 on Aug 18, 2011 2:22 PM
I do this. I rec, simply because they hate it so much. Seeing a comment go green there and the responses it gets is worth the second it takes to click.
by Empty Thoughts on Aug 18, 2011 8:19 AM

MANIA'S RESPONSE :
I personally think BE posters like the color green so much because it reminds them of ...
Their daily social interaction with each other -

Their safe sex philosophy (while blogging about social inequalities) -

One of their favorite hobbies (bicycle seats are discouraged) -

We here at Mania like the color green - but not in the moronic, lemming rec a comment type of way.
Let me show you how we do green the right way:

And in conclusion, I will allow another Mania regular to set the record straight :
Explain something to me smart guy
Is the point of going to BE and Mania to learn/discuss MMA? Then how can a website community, who is currently getting its ass kicked by a certain other community, make any claims towards intelligence?
Maybe you should reconsider the point of BE.

Mania vs. BE Contest - Drew's version
Event 4 has ended, and nothing has really changed. Team Elbow gets closer and closer each time, yet still can not man a team that will all pick for an entire event. But don't worry, their leader will unite them,
Jesus Christ Monkeyballs can we please get it together for fuck's sake?!?!?!?!
we are awful
God damn I hate us so much right now.
and finally, the admittance of failure.
I should have put everyone through an intense boot camp like the fellas at Mania did.
We’re so awful its hilarious.
but this is all just good fun!
I would like to win once. Just once.
To prove to my dad I’m not a loser.
It's so odd that Team Elbow has figured out a way to make Team Mania stop caring at all before the season is even over. I knew from the beginning that we would have more fun with this and would enjoy winning more, but is that really the case now? Like a knee to the chest, Team Elbow has completely sucked the air out of the room. They actually found a way to make this boring, I'm surprised but at the same time it completely makes sense. The same people that can make the sport of MMA and the female body annoying and sometimes even painful to discuss have thrown their Debbie Downer attitude all over our friendly competition. Good job guys, I'm impressed. Cover up team Elbow, just 2 events left.

BloodyElbow.com Betting Game Recap: UFC 133 Tweet
via video.ufc.tv
Well dreamers, the Tito Ortiz gravedigger encore dream died last night in spectacular fashion as Rashad Evans destroyed The Huntington Beach Bad Boy in the 2nd round with a hideous knee to the body and punches. Dennis Hallman wore awesome tights and then got knocked into next week by Brian Ebersole's nasty ground and pound.
Vitor Belfort knocked out his second opponent in his last 3 fights with blatant strikes to the back of the head. Alexander Gustaffson and Rory MacDonald TKO'd their respective opponents as well, albeit with legal strikes. Because of this, they did not get KOTN. Way to follow the rules, knuckleheads.
With that out of the way, let us get to the reason we all came here. The results of the BE Betting Game!

What is the joy of summer really about?
Summer movies? Maybe.

Score Settler - Jim Miller vs. Shinya Aoki
Maniacs,
Time to blow the dust off this oldie but goodie and put it back to good use.
***Wiki info used in fanpost***
Some posters feel that Melendez laid the blueprint to beat Aoki and Miller would have the same success.
James Andrew Miller (born August 30, 1983) is an American mixed martial artist. He has held the Cage Fury Fighting Championships Lightweight Championship and Reality Fighting Featherweight Championship. He currently fights for the UFC's lightweight division. He is the younger brother of fellow MMA fighter Dan Miller. As of May 3, 2011 Miller is ranked the #7 lightweight fighter in the world by Sherdog.[1], and as of July 2011 is ranked as the number 6 lightweight fighter in the world by MMAWeekly[2].
Miller began training in mixed martial arts in 2005, when he began training at Planet Jiu Jitsu with his brother Dan Miller. He entered into the sport with a background in wrestling. Miller grew up in Sparta Township, New Jersey and competed in wrestling in high school at Sparta High School, as well as one year of collegiate wrestling at Virginia Tech.[3] He currently holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Jamie Cruz.[4]
Others feel that Aoki's grappling alone would still be enough to overcome Miller.
Shinya Aoki (青木 真也, Aoki Shin'ya?, born May 9, 1983) is a Japanese mixed martial artist, grappler, and former police trainee who is noted for being the DREAM Lightweight Champion and former Shooto Middleweight Champion.[3] Aoki holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Yuki Nakai, as well as a black belt in judo. He is one of the most prominent fighters out of the Paraestra Shooting gym. Aoki also trains out of Evolve MMA in Singapore. He is best known for his excellent flexibility, and submission skills often taking opponents by surprise and earning him the nickname Tōbikan Jūdan (跳関十段), meaning "10th degree black belt or grandmaster of flying submissions."
As of 2008, Aoki, along with Deep champion Masakazu Imanari, and Sengoku champion Satoru Kitaoka have founded the "Nippon Top Team" as a group of elite Japanese grapplers competing in MMA. As well as his MMA credentials, Aoki has garnered several submission grappling accolades including two All Japan Jiu-Jitsu championships, a Japan Open Jiu-Jitsu championship, a Budo Open championship, and an ADCC Japan championship. In mixed martial arts, 18 of Aoki's 28 wins have come via submission. He was ranked the #4 lightweight fighter in the world by FightMatrix.com[4] as well as the #4 Lightweight by Sherdog.com[5] and #4 by MMAWeekly[6] as of July 2011.
What say you?

Maniacs,
Congrats to Sergio for winning our last QOTW :
Don’t care who wins Diaz brothers are really good and everything, but they’re a couple of immature pieces of shit, no? If anything, they deserve to lose, due to their crappy little attitudes and ugly looks!!! haha! But seriously, if I had to guess, obviously Diaz is going to win with pitter patter rabbit punches and distracting his opponent with emotional shit talking…Ya Diaz fags!!!

Badass Friday Fun Post - with updates!
Maniacs,
OD and I were in a deep philosophical discussion about what is truly badass these days (in the Len Bentley - Brock thread).
I looked up a credible source (Urban Dictionary.com) to get a good grasp of the concept.
|
badass - Awesome to an extreme level, thereby leveraging unquestionable authority.
|
A solid definition but I needed more.
I needed...pictures!
Come with me as we explore the many levels of being a badass :
Phat Booty = BADASS

===========================================================================================
Bruce Lee = CLASSIC BADASS

==========================================================================================
Selling cornhole lotion while being in the NFL HOF ? Da Coach = FUCKING BADASS
================================================================================================================
Posing for a calendar with a fine sheen of beautiful man sweat all over your chest while the ocean roars behind you? And still being able to kick 99% of the world's population? GSP = BADASSERY

==========================================================================================
THE ULTIMATE IN BADASSERY? ISN'T IT OBVIOUS? ROCK THIS AND GSP HIMSELF BETTER GIVE YOU A WIDE BERTH, HOMEY...

What's badass for you, Maniacs?
Tell it like it is in the comments below and have a BADASS FRIDAY!

Fans Interview Fighters: Lyle Beerbohm edition
After beginning his mixed martial arts career with a stellar record of 16 wins to no losses, Lyle Beerbohm suffered his first defeat at the hands of Pat Healy at Strikeforce Challengers 14 this past February in Cedar Park, Texas.
Beerbohm, a lightweight out of Spokane, Washington, will go from losing to the embattled Healy straight into an April 9 main card match-up against submission specialist Shinya Aoki.
The 32 year-old veteran has lived one hell of a life, in which he's battled drug addiction and spent time in the big house, culminating in an upcoming documentary about his life.
In the latest edition of "Fans Interview Fighters," we caught up with "Fancy Pants" about all that and more, including where he sees his career going, how the UFC buyout of Strikeforce will affect him and his upcoming fight against the previously mentioned Aoki.
Check it out:

Friday Fun Post - Your Favorite Martial Arts Movies
Maniacs,
In honor of the Oscars this upcoming Sunday, I would like to introduce a list of some of my favorite Martial Arts Movies.
***Wikipedia was used as a source.
What were my criteria?
1) Fight choreography
2) Diversity of the MA being showcased
3) Authenticity of the MA
Feel free to post your favs and why. If they are different from my list then that's even better. Poll enclosed below.
Happy Friday!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1) Fist of Fury - Bruce Lee
What's it about? - The film is set in the early 20th century in Shanghai International Settlement. The martial arts student Chen Zhen returns to Jingwu School to marry his fiancée Yuan Le-erh. However tragic news awaits him; his master Huo Yuanjia had died, apparently from illness. Chen is deeply saddened and traumatised by the sudden demise of his teacher. Not long after the funeral; two Japanese students from the Bushido School and man working for Hiroshi Susuki in Hongkou, show up. They present a sign to Jingwu School, bearing the words "Sick Men of East Asia" (東亞病夫), seemingly as to insult Huo Yuanjia, describing the Chinese as "weaklings" in comparison to the Japanese. They taunt the Jingwu students to fight them and promise that they will "eat their words" if the Jingwu students dare to fight and defeat them.
Martial Arts featured : Traditional Chinese and Japanese combat (unarmed combat and melee weapons)
http://youtu.be/5q9kYKtvYU0 (Bruce kicks ass and takes names later)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Fearless - Jet Li
What's it about? - It is loosely based on the life of Huo Yuanjia, a famous Chinese martial artist who challenged foreign fighters in highly publicised events, restoring pride and nationalism to China at a time when Western imperialism and Japanese manipulation were eroding the country during the last few years before the birth of the Republic of China.
Martial Arts featured : Traditional Chinese and Japanese combat (unarmed and melee weapons), British boxing and American wrestling
http://youtu.be/CRjMFsw_qHM (Beautiful choreography)
***Jet Li's 2006 film Fearless is loosely based on the real life of Huo Yuanjia, Chen Zhen's master in Fist of Fury.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Ong Bak - Tony Jaa
What's it about? - In Ban Nong Pradu, (northeastern Thailand) the village's most prized possession is an ancient Buddha image, named Ong-Bak. Their best martial artist is named Ting. During the night, Ting's uncle stumbles into the temple. He witnesses and yells at intruders but is knocked out with a piece of wood. He awakes to find the statue's head missing. The villagers are worried. Ting promises to recover it. The villagers help pay for his trip to Bangkok, where he is to meet his scumbag cousin Humlae and get help in tracking down the thieves.
Martial Arts featured : Muay Thai or Muay Boran (the ancestor of modern Muay Thai)
http://youtu.be/pS1zjId4-9I (Awesome MB/MT technique)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) Gladiator - Cuba Gooding Jr.
What's it about? - Set in the mean streets of Chicago, Tommy Riley and his father have just moved in an attempt to start a new life. His father has accumulated many gambling debts, but has found a new job that requires him to travel extensively, leaving his son alone at home. A loan shark sends two collectors to Tommy's house where he is threatened unless his father pays off a debt. A local boxing promoter by the name of Pappy Jack offers him a chance to fight in an illegal underground boxing operation. Tommy then agrees to fight one match, in exchange to pay off the debt.
Martial Arts featured : Traditional boxing, "dirty" boxing and Bare-knuckle boxing
http://youtu.be/utLdAjOToU8 (The boxing basics displayed here are superior to any of the Rocky movies)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5) Above the Law - Steven Seagal
What's it about? - Nico Toscani is a cop in the Chicago Police Department’s vice squad. Early on, he developed an interest in martial arts, and soon he moved to Japan to study from the masters. Nico and his partner Jax are now investigating a drug ring, and after busting two of the dealers, he discovers plastic explosives. Nico eventually finds out the dealers he busted are linked to a corrupt CIA agent named Kurt Zagon, who tried to fund an invasion of Nicaragua and was under heat from Congress to reveal his undercover operations.
Martial Arts featured : Aikido and melee weapons
http://youtu.be/k9C37YyM2gE (A nice scene displaying Aikido in a "real world" setting)

Sure, why not? He gets mad and wants to fight me. I turn and run. He chases me about 10 yards and gasses. Then, when he’s doubled over struggling to breathe, I just push him over. I’ve now joined the immo rtal MMA gods such as Kala Hose and Pete Sell who hold wins over Phil Baroni.

2) In reference to Big Nog's relevance in MMA after his hip surgery:
I walk just fine, and I would whip his ass. First I would do a salsa dance to prove the superiority of my hips. Then when he was feeling bad about himself, I’d punch him.

3) In reference to Chuck Liddell's retirement
"Ok, so if I have 4 knockouts, and one of them is Tito, who then retires, I can claim him as a dependent and double my tax return".

4) In reference to possible future match ups for Brock (latest chapter in the saga of SD vs. PH) :
I think Mir will do better vs JDS than he did agaisnt either Carwin or Brock Styles make fights and style wise Mir vs JDS is a better match up for Mir vs Brock. With saying that I too think Mir will be TKO’d in the third.

You have won the redundant award. Again. (I think you have to win it twice, lol).
Whenever you say it, it adds nothing, and I mean nothing to your already jummbled heap of shit of a comment.
