On February 4th I started a thread that read:

"Leaving all of the other stuff I've said in other threads. One thing I think the current team we have can do is have the coaching staff tell Ray-D that he needs to take over. Call me crazy, but I think he has a level he is just not going to.

He seems almost too unselfish at times in the sense that he doesn't want to take shots away from the old guys. TJ and Byrd are good players, but he needs to admit to himself that he is just as good as they are and deserves to take as many shots as them. If he starts doing that, we will increase our balance slightly which should as a result make our offense better.

We've seen flashes of what he can do (specifically against Notre Dame), but Ray-D doesn't bring it consistently. I believe for this current team to get to their maximum potential, Davis is going to have to be the guy that gets them there. That is a lot to ask a Freshman to do, but he seems to be the key at least in my opinion."

Is this emergence of Davis/balance the biggest reason we have started to look better or do we think it is something else. I personally (and obviously I am biased) think it is Davis. We are not a good offensive team, but if we can AT LEAST have balance, we can find ways to score. I'm starting to have hope of an NIT bid!!! Need to get two big wins in Chicago.

Lately I have come under fire for expressing a different opinion than the majority of people on this site have about Painter. That is ok. I expected I would. However, I just want to clarify that I certainly HOPE I am wrong. I really really do want each and every one of you to be able to rub it in my face after we are playing past the Sweet 16. I want this program to succeed, and I want to beat the living piss out of Michigan tonight. Back to back wins over ranked opponents fighting for the conference championship would be great for our young Boilers moving forward and would even give us a decent chance at making the NIT. So whether you are pro-Painter or anti-Painter, we are all pro-Purdue and I for one am hoping for a win. In fact, with Terone Johnson owning Michigan and them being so young and playing for so much tonight (and possibly looking past us to IU), I actually am feeling weirdly pretty good about this game.

BTFU!

We had someone try and be cute and have a ridiculous Brad Stevens post. Pretty childish, but it is what it is. Then there are other people that claim that people who don't like Painter only show up when it is convenient and therefore don't stand by their convictions. I am not one of those people. I still believe that Painter is overrated and overpaid.

Please don't misunderstand what I am saying. I am from Muncie. I have met Painter. I am not saying this wishing he will fail. I am saying this and praying that I am proven wrong because first and foremost I am a Purdue fan. I want to see our team do well, just like everyone else on this site. If that is with Painter at the helm: so be it. However, when you analyze a coach, I believe there are three things that go into it. 1) Recruiting. 2) In game coaching. 3) Player development. When using this criteria, I find Painter to be less than an elite coach despite being paid like an elite coach. Using this logic, I believe he is overrated.

1) Recruiting:

We can argue until we are blue in the face about recruiting. It would go something like...

Pro-Painter people may say he didn't have the funds to compete and now he does so we should wait and see.

Anti-Painter people may point out stories about how Painter allegedly handled Tyler Zeller's recruitment so poorly that we never had a chance with Cody Zeller and that has nothing to do with money.

Pro-Painter people will point out the 2007 class. It was probably one of the best classes in recent B1G history.

Anti-Painter people will point out that was his only good class and Couzo Martin had more to do with landing them than Painter did. Also, Painter could recruit them more heavily because he was an assistant and head coach in waiting before being the head coach which allowed him more time to spend on it.

Pro-Painter people will point to how things appear to be turning around lately with a pretty good class this year and next.

Anti-Painter people will argue that Painter couldn't even recruit a member of the team to stay: John Hart.

...Regardless on your stance as anti or pro, there is enough evidence as of right now to suggest that at this area of coaching for CMP is just average. Recruiting therefore IMO gets a C grade.

2) In game coaching:

This is kind of tricky. How do you measure this? In just W's and L's? I personally believe this can be broken down as well: record, post season record, talent on the floor, wins you shouldn't have gotten, and losses you shouldn't have received.

Painter's record is good. It's not great, but it certainly is good. Post season record is good. A B1G tourney win is ok, and he has won every first round NCAA game (at Purdue. He lost a 8-9 matchup while at S. Illinois) he has coached. However, he has never been past the Sweet 16 once and only been to that round twice.

What irks me is the talent on the floor. When Purdue starts their normal lineup of Johnson, Johnson, Byrd, Davis, and Hammons that is 5 players who were top 100 players coming out of HS. Other players: A. Johnson, Carroll, and Marcius. Coming off the bench were top 100 players as well at some point (although A. Johnson may have fallen out due to injuries in HS). There is enough talent on the floor to win games. I get the inconsistency that freshman usually bring, but we haven't been inconsistent, we have been consistently bad for the most part. The 2007 class fortunately brought a lot of leadership, but once they were all gone I feel like in game coaching looked worse.

This also plays into wins we shouldn't have gotten and losses we shouldn't have suffered. It is great to be excited about stealing one from Wisconsin. That was a pretty great thing to accomplish so late in the season. However, does it offset the losses of E. Michigan, Oregon St., and Northwestern? This is only looking at this year which may be unfair, but coaches are judged in a "what have you done lately" world. I am just trying to keep the argument relative.

With all things considered, is coach Painter a bad coach? Not at all. To declare him so would be ridiculous. I wish he would make some changes such as playing zone every once in awhile or us running a set play every now and again (ok we get it Painter, you don't have to yell motion every time), but he is smarter than I am when it comes to basketball so while I may not understand the rigidness of his philosophies I accept them. However, after all the things I've seen I still cannot bring myself to declare him any better than a C-grade in game coach.

3) Player development

This one is an easy C+. For as awesome as it was that JJ went from a bench player to a All-American, there was also LewJack's inability to hit a jump shot. There was Barlow's lack of getting better and getting kicked off the team. There was Bade being so bad he switched to football. There is Keaton Grant getting worse his junior and senior years. Lawson doesn't look any better. Martin left the program. Hart didn't stay for his senior year. Who has gotten better besides JJ? Not in the natural progression that comes from experience. Players should be better their senior year than their freshman year if they weren't being coached at all. They have more strength and experience. What I want to see is what consistently seems to happen at MSU. They have someone who never plays and then all of a sudden is contributing a solid 8-10 ppg. Where are those leaps for our players? If there are some, do they outweigh the other players that didn't improve? I said C+ because an All-American is a BIG deal, but everything else has been average and I believe the grade should mostly come from the whole and not from the exception.

Total grade: C to C+

I am not saying he is terrible. Certain things such as an apparent lack of heart bother me more than anything. And who knows what is best for this program moving forward. We are on a MESSAGE BOARD. But do not sit there on your high horse people and call it ridiculous to make an argument that Painter is overrated. I just made one. You don't have to agree with it, but the points I have made are legitimate issues. So be on your side. Say everything is perfect. I do not agree. I think he is a solid but unspectacular coach, and for as much as we pay him I expect more. That's my opinion.

Leaving all of the other stuff I've said in other threads.

That is a lot to ask a Freshman to do, but he seems to be the key at least in my opinion.

I'm pissed. I've seen bad Purdue teams. I've supported bad Purdue teams. HOWEVER, I have NEVER seen a team wear Purdue jerseys and have so little heart.

Some people are going to say the Painter comment is a knee-jerk reaction, but I have frankly never been a big fan. I thought he was a good coach that got labeled (wrongly) as a great coach due to one outstanding recruiting class. It was an all time great class, but let's not forget that he had a chance to recruit them while he WAS NOT the head coach. He spent a year as an assistant coach which allowed him not to worry about balancing coaching and recruiting.

Since then, he has not had a single class be anything to write home about, and now... we are paying for it. We have been bad this year. We would have been bad last year if it wasn't for a Hummel injury that gave us a bonus year, but being bad is not the issue. Having a team that has no heart is. It's embarrassing and it is Painter's fault.

Painter recruited players that were immature.

Painter recruited players that can't shoot (even though we run a motion offense) ((oh and our only real shooter is graduating))

Painter recruited players that are "tough" and "defensive oriented" and now we can't score enough to win. (Oh and our defense has been horrible too)

Painter recruited players that haven't gotten better.

Our issues may be player oriented, but Painter is the one who made them Purdue players. And all of this would be fine, but then he flirted with leaving to Mizzou and got a huge payday. If he wants to be paid like an elite coach, then it better result in elite teams on the floor, but at the very least: it should result in a team that gives a damn.

I'm pissed. I've seen bad Purdue teams. I've supported bad Purdue teams. HOWEVER, I have NEVER seen a team wear Purdue jerseys and have so little heart.

Dave Telep tweeted this earlier today:

"Monte Morris will unofficially visit Indiana May 4. Like the Hoosiers chances here. They watched him Friday night."

That is the link for Morris. He's a 2013 PG that is ranked 82nd.

I am not so much worried about it or whatever as I wonder what your guys' reaction is to this. Do we like that IU is good enough nationally to go into other states and take good players? While it could mean them landing some 5 star guys, it would leave us unopposed for a lot of the in-state guys. I have mixed emotions about it. I like that we only recruit in IN and IL for the most part, and IU being a non-factor for some of our targets could be a good thing?

When trying to recover from the game this past weekend, I went through everything I could in my head. I almost puked. I know you all had to feel like you were going to too. How could we lose that game? (Lewis Jackson and Painter are mostly to blame IMO but we will get into that when we aren't all so sad in the coming weeks I am sure). However I did start to think about what this meant for our program. First: It is the first time in 10 years that an IU team has gone farther than a Purdue team. That isn't good. Especially when they are returning more and have a better class coming in. This worries me greatly as it should you. The baby boilers are gone... and our greatest class delivered only 1 Sweet 16. I'm sure you are wondering where the positive part is, and it is in this next line: we will be better next year than we were this year. How you ask?...

1) Lewis Jackson will be gone. I am not a hater on people that put in 4 years of heart and hard work, but the bottom realistic line is that he is just average at best. He was a great FIT when he was around great players like ETwaun, JJ, and Hummel. However, RJ should be better than him in everyway almost immediately (say by the end of his freshman year). Having a guard that can't shoot I think killed our motion a lot of the time.

2) We will be bigger. Everyone coming in (including Hale) is going to be bigger than the person they are replacing. Hammons is going to be bigger than Carrol. RD is bigger than Smith. TJ if moved to the point is going to be bigger than Jackson. Bigger bigger bigger. Our motion takes a long time and will eventually make the defense switch. This will get us mismatches and with more size should come more mismatches.

3) Depth. More people are going to be ready this year. No more star player that everyone leans on too much. Everyone will have to chip in and our balance will be a strength. Late in the year we became more balanced and it actually made our star player better. Hopfully we do that from the start, and I think we will.

4) Hunger. Our new guys are hungry. Our old guys should be pissed. No bad apples like Barlow. No distraction from our coach flirting with another program. Everyone should be focused on one thing: A sweet 16.

I don't really see how we don't win somewhere between 22-25 games. I think we should definitely get a 4-5 seed, and I think we should make it to the sweet 16. Meanwhile... this should all be done with our young guys developing so that when it is their turn they can take us to the next level that the 2013 class should add too. EFFF fate for being a little bitch and robbing us of what our players deserved and what we wanted as fans. We are going to shove it right up fates *** and get where we should have gone anyway in next few years. The final four.

I know it is ridiculous to predict this early, but it's a way to pass the time on a message board right? I am going to attempt the earliest pre-season selections of all time.

1st Team:

DeShaun Thomas

Cody Zeller

Trey Burke

Gary Harris

Tim Frazier

2nd Team:

Aaron Craft

Terone Jonson

Mitch McGary

Tim Hardaway Jr.

Christian Watford

3rd Team:

DJ Byrd

Drew Crawford

Yogi Ferrell

Adam Woodbury

Freshman:

Gary Harris

Yogi Ferrell

Mitch McGary

Adam Woodbury

Sam Dekker

Now if you stayed with me so far, the point of this is to prove just how insanely hard our conference is going to be next season. We love our recruiting class, and we should. They are going to be really good for a long time I think, but they are going to have a hard time even making the all-freshman team.

The big ten is going to be stacked for a long time. And I am saying it now: the 2012 class is going to have the same impact on the league that the 2007 class did. I know that is a bold statement, but a lot of seniors are leaving and so the freshman are not only going to have a chance to make an impact but make an EARLY impact.

I know that some people have gotten kind of down on our chances, but I don't think that they should. Right now we are 6-6 and are 6th in the conference standings and (you would assume) the highest ranked team that isn't officially ranked in the top 25. Now as we project the games we should win and shouldn't win, we SHOULD probably end up at 8-10. Wins at home over PSU and NEB will make us 8-10, and are our only games we will be favored.

There are four teams directly behind us in the standings at 5-7, so let's take a look at those teams. I will put in bold their record if they win all of their home games against non-ranked teams and road games against PSU and NEB:

Iowa has the best shot at making it to 9 wins with 4 games left against teams in the bottom half of the standings. However, 3 of them are on the road. 7-11

Illinois only has 3 games left against non-ranked teams and only 2 against teams in the bottom half of the standings (we are the non ranked team in the top half). 7-11

Northwestern has only 3 games vs. non-ranked teams. Only one of them are at home, but they play PSU on the road. 7-11

Minnesota only has one game at home vs. a non-ranked team and don't play at PSU or NEB either. 6-12

Now, in CBB there is NO CHANCE that every game goes according to plan. However, we are a game ahead of the 7th place teams, and their schedules don't suggest that they should catch us. And even if they do, it will probably be just to tie us for 6th. So if we are 8-10, but still in the top half of the hardest conference in the nation, we are going to the NCAA. Should we be there with a below .500 record? Not in my opinion, but if we get there I am going to be excited regardless.

PS: How about we just beat the Sh*t out of Illinois and Indiana at their "halls" and go into the NCAA 10-8 while showing all the local recruits what we are about!!!

We find ourselves in a pretty good recruiting situation I feel like. First let's look at some of the facts:

We have locked up a lot of high major talent for the 2012 and 2013 classes.

The guys we have locked up seem to have really bought in to the "Purdue system".

Now this will help us out dramatically in recruiting in a variety of ways I think as the program goes forward. How I think it will help:

Painter only has to recruit players for one class, 2014, rather than try and plug holes in a variety of classes.

Our 2012 and 2013 classes seem to have guys with likable personalities. In essence, instead of just the coaches recruiting, we now have 7 more guys putting in a good word for our program.

I think players want to play with other guys they know so this is becoming a big deal in the world of recruiting. If you need an example just look at Zeller and Indiana Elite. The sooner we say who will be here, the sooner their AAU buddies will start to consider us.

We know what type of players we will "need". More than likely big bodies to complement the wings from 2013.

Time. We have plenty of time so Painter has the chance to be the first person in these 2014 guys' ears. We won't get all of them, but we are a program desperate for that one player to push us over the top.

We find ourselves in a pretty good recruiting situation I feel like. First let's look at some of the facts:

Next season I am interested to see what starting lineup Painter throws out there. I have a pretty good feeling he is going to start the upperclassmen to start out with and we will see:

PG: RJ

SG: TJ

SF: Barlow

PF: Bird

C: Carroll

But am I the only one that says start the young guys? I am not even saying this because "the grass is greener", but I do think that a large part of the E'Twaun/JJ/Hummel success came from the experience they had. I know they were good. Heck this 2012 class probably has no chance of being as good talent wise, but if we start all 4 freshman I think that by there JR/SR years they could be a top 5 team in the nation. They have the unique opportunity to have a sum larger than the individual parts because their FIT is so good. They will be big, they will be physical, they will have a pass first PG, they will have a guy that can get his own shot, and they will play defense. I say start them from day one. It may make us barely worse in the short term, but could pay off with a final four long term IMO.

I can't believe how many of commits are going to be at the football game to try and persuad Harris, Jankovic, and Lyle. I really hope the fans that are there realize this and start a "We want Harris" chant. I wish the weather was better but hey... whata can ya do? Hopfully tomorrow we wake up to the news of at least one comitment! Oh and there is a pretty fun in-state rivalry game tonight too.

I can't believe how many of commits are going to be at the football game to try and persuad Harris, Jankovic, and Lyle. If you plug that in your search bar... you will see that Davis and Johnson are both going to try and be on campus when Harris is. Hopfully they help sell Purude because I know over the summer Harris was quoted saying he liked playing with both of them and both of them were quoted saying they were trying to convince him to come to Purdue. Also Jankovic would be a snag as well (although I feel he is a back up plan for Hammons).

We bring in a transfer to replace Bade.

There is one guy in particular that I think would be a dynamite addition to the team: Rotnei Clarke.

He was a JR last year so we could give him 2 paid for years in which he only plays in 1. If we did this, then we would have one spot open (if Hart leaves after this year) in 2012 so it wouldn't even interfere with adding another 2012 recruit.

The news just keeps getting better and better. First, we have two of our guys get drafted with one being a first round pick for the same team! That is a good story no matter who you are.

Then Molock decommits. Don't get me wrong... I will ALWAYS root for him. He showed our program loyalty at a very early age and had it not been for an unfortunate knee injury I think he could have been a hell of a player for us, but at our level of play we can't afford to hope he would be 100% and got RJ. Now we get a chance to add a guy who fits into that 2012 class a little bit better.

The real kicker is... if we add someone like a Harris, Hammons, or McGary we will be a top 3 class. Then all this talk we have been forced to endure from IU fans about their precious 2012 recruiting class will be nothing more than verbal toilet paper.

Boiler up!

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it yet, but MSU got Fife as an assistant coach to round out their staff. I definitely wanted him over our newest pickup, so I am not too happy. However, the big news is that Wood apparently is leaning towards MSU. I would have liked to bring him in because I think we could definitely use him this year since I think our offense is going to be lacking. If someone transfered, and I think we'll have at least 1 , then we could use Wood for a year before that space allows us to sign RJ without being over in '12 and '13 if it is Marcius.

Now at first I was a little peeved. I don't know if 2 sweet 16s is enough to warrant being paid with the who's who of college coaches. However, Just think if Hummel had not been hurt. Either time, you would have to assume we are a final 4 team. So he did get that stolen from him. Also, when you look at the list he is third in the B1G, right behind Matta and well behind Izzo. I think that is fair as well.

We are a damn good team, and maybe one of the best four teams in the country even. Losing to Iowa doesn't change that. However, I think we have no shot at making it to the final four if we don't have the seed to do it. You have to be good, but you also have to be lucky. It's a lot easier to be lucky against worse teams with a better seed. One really has to wonder how a team with 2 mega star seniors, a good coach, and an outside shot at the Big Ten title could play so god awful against the worst team in the big ten BY FAR.

If you didn't already want him before... you can't read that and still not want him. We would have fantastic pieces to put around him and a player of his caliber would make us the best team in the nation IMO (when you consider who would be around him). Unless we are going to start trying to lock up freshman, we now can put every recruiting resource we have into landing him as well. That kind of full court press on a recruit over the course of 2 years would at least give us a shot to get him when you consider who he would get to play with, the staff he would get to play for, proximity to home (since he is a family guy), updated facilities, and a recent tradition of success. Foster can take a back seat in recruiting for awhile IMO.

I didn't know if anyone has heard anything about how he is progressing in terms of getting bigger and how he has played in practice. I think he could be a big big player for us next year. He was one of the best player in Chicago for years and from what I understand was only red shirted to get a little big bigger and stronger. If he is tearing it up in practice I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm from the Muncie area, so talking bad about Painter on here isn't easy. However, he needs to get things straightened out in a hurry. We are getting beat in recruiting, and we are getting beat badly. He had one good class. JUST ONE!!! and failed to build on it. IU is back, and quite frankly has a better coach then us. While I am ranting, I may as well point out that he is flat out missing on guys as well. Bade? Really... he is worth a scholarship? Jackson and Barlow can't even shoot the ball! None of these guys with their "potential" are getting any better why they are here. Byrd was a top 100 guy and looks like a kid sometimes. Matta was who we should have gotten, but instead we let Keady pick who followed him. Now it is going to cost us. While defense and team play is important, talent is going to be what ultimately wins the championships. If we would of had a better recruiter when IU was down... oh what could have been.
