Red Cup Rebellion Where Could the Rebels be Headed?

Regional hosts have now been selected, and Ole Miss will find out this morning if it will be headed to such faraway places as Eugene, Ore. or as close-by as Ajax to eat a sorrow-filled Mom's meatloaf.

National seeds, super regional pairings and the entire bracket will be released at 11 a.m. on ESPNU for those of you taking a break from Memorial Day festivities to be a good Rebel.

The hosts are after the jump along with some brief analysis.

Red Cup Rebellion Grove Bowl Initial Impressions

Donte Moncrief was a go-to guy for Bo Wallace.

I, unlike a horde of bad Rebel fans (read: you -- okay, we're kidding), made it to Oxford this weekend to take in both the Rebel football team's Grove Bowl game festivities as well as the Arkansas baseball weekend. After the Grove Bowl, I sent an email to the usual gang of Red Cup Rebellion idiots to gather some knee-jerk reactions and give us yet another piece of discussion fodder for the offseason. What follows are the impressions of, largely, myself and Whiskey Wednesday, with a smattering of "insight" from Juco All-American and Ghost.

This isn't supposed to be some sort of in-depth analysis. We're talking about spring football here, so getting "deep" with this would just be a waste of time. These are first impressions of what we saw. We encourage you to share your impressions as well.

Red Cup Rebellion SEC Basketball Tournament and Ole Miss' Highly Unlikely, Yet Not Impossible Trip to the Finals

Thursday at noon, the fourth or fifth most exciting conference tournament in all of NCAA basketball begins, as the 2012 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament makes it's Big Easy debut in the New Orleans Arena. Our Rebels, after a three-game winning streak and an 8-8 SEC finish earned the much coveted 7th seed, meaning that, most importantly, a the opportunity to earn a bye was missed.

"Well, this will be a waste of time, right?" No. It's not. This is Kennedy ball, meaning that we're always on the bubble and in demand of the attention of even the most casual of our basketball fan base. That's right, don't fret (or do), because there is still a chance our beloved Rebels can reach the upper echelons of postseason play - the Big Dance - with a handful of SEC tournament wins. And while Kennedy's teams have typically underperformed in the SEC tourney, it's important to note that his team has a relatively easy go at it this SEC tournament.

Here, take a look:

Red Cup Rebellion Basketball Open Thread - Ole Miss vs. Bama

Feb 28, 2012; Fayetteville, AR, USA; Mississippi Rebels forward Terrance Henry (1) dribbles the ball during a game against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Bud Walton Arena. Mississippi defeated Arkansas 77-75. Mandatory Credit: Beth Hall-US PRESSWIRE

It's senior day for the Rebels as Terrance Henry will enter his final regular season game for Ole Miss.

They're giving out a bunch of t-shirts with 1K on them in honor of Henry's 1,000 points as a Rebel. He also has recorded more than 100 blocks in his career.

At stake for the Rebels is a 6 or 7-seed in the SEC Tournament, neither of which would secure a bye – the only real advantage in the tournament – and the chance to break even in conference play.

Remember, earlier this season, ESPN predicted the Rebels had a chance for the Big Dance if they won 10 or 11 SEC games including the tournament. With eight conference victories including Bama today, the Rebels would still need a deep run in the SECT to have a shot at being a bubble team.

So, essentially, let's win this one for Terrance. And apparently it's Steadman Short's last game too, so um, him too.

Red Cup Rebellion Baseball Weekend Open Thread - UNC Wilmington

ETA: Happy Sunday! Let's get the sweep, Rebs!

And so the sounds of spring have begun to fall upon the beautiful ears of the people of Oxford and Ole Miss – the muted ping of a composite bat, the roars from right field and the sultry tones of Glen Waddle on the PA.

Ole Miss will play its first weekend home series beginning today against UNC–Wilmington (I think their mascot is a egret or sea falcon or some shit).

Your lively Rebel baseball banter can be posted here all weekend as usual. Myself and the missus will be in our seats along the third base line if you so choose to stop by (remember, bring me a red cup). Projected starters after the jump.

Red Cup Rebellion Ole Miss vs. Tennessee - Men's Basketball Open Thread

Alright, so basketball is still going on.

Some local media are still pushing the "long shot" tourney hopes, but we've been down on this team since an opening SEC loss to LSU in Baton Rouge.

It'd still be nice to beat the Vols and improve our chances at hosting an NIT game or two. It means money for the athletic department, so there's always that.

Yeah, I know it sounds doom and gloom. I blame it on my ongoing bout with my sinuses (see: Mississippi winters are harrowing when it comes to 30 degree temperature differences daily).

Red Cup Rebellion Starting Line-up for Friday, Anyone?

The ever-dogged baseball reporter at Rivals, Chase Parham, is reporting the defensive line-up for this Friday's game at TCU.

Here's the defensive line-up:

C. Will Allen
1B Preston Overbey
2B Alex Yarbrough
3B Andrew Mistone
SS Blake Newell
LF Tanner Mathis

SS: Blake Newalu and Austin Anderson

Red Cup Rebellion Christmas in February

The Ole Miss baseball season is nearly upon us. Less than two weeks from now, the Rebels will have played their first game of the 2012 season against TCU in Fort Worth (more like NO WORTH amirite?).

If you're a good Rebel like myself, you may have already received a little something in the mailbox today. Check it out after the jump.

Red Cup Rebellion Who ARE These Guys?!?!?! - Freshmen Baseball Edition

If you got the joke in the headline, kudos to you.

Though basketball is still hurtling its way toward a disappointing finish in the second round of the NIT, many Rebel fans have turned their sights to baseball (where a disastrous 2011 season has magically disappeared from our memory). Baseball and beer is here. Let's pop a top and dive right in.

Biancoomaha_medium

Freshmen account for 11 of the roster spots posted on the Ole Miss athletic website, but it's not likely that many of these players will crack the every day roster or get much PT in SEC play.

So here's their introductions sans walk-out music and the projections we have for 2012 in terms of playing time and impact to the team.

Red Cup Rebellion Mid-Season Baseball Discussion: Are we bound for a 2-seed?

Brian Walker's Elbow and I are back together again for a mid-season chit-chat about what the Rebel baseball team has accomplished so far and where they are likely headed with less than 20 games left in the season.

Biancoomaha_medium

I don't think there's many fans in the seamhead Rebel nation that can be excited about where this team is right now. Yes, we're first in the SEC Western Division, but we're tied with two other teams.

Yes, we have a top 40 RPI, but we haven't had a breakthrough SEC series yet where we take two of three from a top program.

Let's just get to our discussion analyzing the 2011 season so far.

Red Cup Rebellion Guv's Cup: Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State baseball

Ahh, Pearl, Miss. – home to the Jackson Braves, a Bass Pro Shops and a Sonic that has service so slow I nearly missed the first pitch last year because of it.

Ole Miss (23-14, 8-7 SEC) and Mississippi State (22-14, 6-9 SEC) will meet at Trustmark Park at 6:30. The game will be televised on CSS for those of you who enjoy watching games with some static and color that goes in and out from time to time.

The game represents our largest in-state rivalry (yep, even bigger than Jackson State), and also, the beginning of the most challenging part of the Rebel schedule.

Red Cup Rebellion Changes: Ole Miss basketball

Oh, Tupac, the Cup misses you. #changes

The season ended just weeks ago, and there has already been a flurry of activity within the Ole Miss basketball program.

This is most likely the heating of the coaching seat of Andy Kennedy in action, or it could be recognition that maybe, just maybe, it was time for some changes.

So is this change we can believe in? Or is it a shell game meant to hype fans up only to let them down with another average season?

Red Cup Rebellion Ole Miss vs. Georgia: Weekend Baseball Open Thread

Rcr-baseball_medium

The next six Ole Miss baseball games should be the best opportunity for a turn-around and strengthen the Rebels record before a harrowing 15-game SEC stretch to end the season.

A three game series against Georgia and another three games against Kentucky set in Oxford offers a chance for at least a 4-2 improvement on the SEC record. This would put the Rebels at 8-7, which is by no means great, but we'll take any above .500 record at this time considering the talent of the conference.

The final five SEC series are against the following: @ Auburn, @ Florida, South Carolina, Mississippi State and @ Arkansas. Going 8-7 in that stretch would be astounding at this point from what we've seen so far this season – anemic offense and solid pitching.

But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves and focus on Georgia as they have rebounded by a terrible non-conference start to be a solid SEC East contender.

Red Cup Rebellion March Madness: Stuff Ole Miss People Like, Food/Drink Regional!

Ole Miss people and Mississippians in general love to eat. We're the most obese state for about 203 years runnin' and, despite Haley Barbour's efforts to get us up off of our hams and get walkin', that doesn't look to change any time soon. You couple that with Ole Miss' perennial top-10 party school status, and you've got a horde of thirsty, hungry people.

So, of course, the food/drink regional is going to be hotly debated and discussed. Please be civil, but don't hold back with your opinions. Omissions, predictions and general tomfoodery (c wut i did thurr?) should go in your comments thread after the bracket and jump.

Post your frustrations, your jubilation and any thoughts on tonight's Sweet 16 matches.

The SEC is represented, which is reason enough to watch.

Also, pro baseball hasn't started yet, and our college baseball is on hiatus until tomorrow.

What else are you going to be doing tonight? Talk about booze you're consuming. That's always a good topic.

Yep, it could happen.

Kentucky vs. Florida in the national championship – and it's not even an absurdly large stretch of an idea.

Tonight, it's up to Florida to keep this dream alive against Jimmer Fredette and the BYU Cougars.

Red Cup Rebellion NIT Update and Open Thread

Three NIT games dot the college basketball landscape this evening on your television including one of our SEC brethren seeking a trip to Madison Square Garden.

All three games tonight are on ESPN2, and we've got the CBI game-times as well if you're into that kind of thing.

Mainly, it's good to see 'Bama showing the NCAA selection committee they may have made a mistake by not selecting them in the tourney. Sure, RPI and SOS are important numbers, but maybe the Tide compiled a good enough second half of the season to get in.

Plus, the SEC has two Sweet Sixteen teams, but we'll get to those tomorrow. Just sayin', maybe we know how to ball a little bit in the southeast outside of those jerks in the ACC.

Red Cup Rebellion NIT, CBI and CIT Brackets? Yep, we've got 'em

ATLANTA, GA - MARCH 12: Tony Mitchell #5 of the Alabama Crimson Tide reacts during their 58 to 72 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats in the semifinals of the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament at Georgia Dome on March 12, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Oh wow, I just looked at my NIT bracket, and it is totally messed up.

You know, that statement just really doesn't resonate at all with me. I chose not do an NIT, CBI or CIT bracket even though our Rebels were one of the teams selected for the NIT.

Mostly because it's really depressing to fill out a bracket who's winner is dubbed the 69th best team in the country. Also, because I knew deep down, Ole Miss wouldn't be that team. Ouch.

OK, everyone feeling awesome about our program now? Let's look at tonight's basketball schedule brought to you by the good people at Samsung. Go buy 10 of their TVs now.

Red Cup Rebellion Round 3 Open Thread

How's your bracket looking?

Still have all Elite Eight teams? Missing a Sweet 16 team or two/three?

This is the life of the non-selected team's fanbases. We're resigned to winning cash in our office pools and fretting over a Kentucky-West Virginia or a dangerous Butler team possibly upsetting a number 1 - again.

We're also down to only two SEC teams - Kentucky and Florida. And if nothing else, there will be at least one 12 or higher seeded team in the Sweet 16 after the Richmond-Morehead State game (did anyone pick that? I'll give you 4,000 cocktails the next time I see you).

What's on tap today is after the jump?

Red Cup Rebellion One Upset Down, Many More to Go

With 13-seed Morehead State's victory over 4-seed Louisville, we've got our first big upset of the 2011 NCAA tournament.

We've got another possibility brewing at the time between Richmond and Vandy, but after six games, it's been a fairly good tournament.

Five of the six games have been decided by less than ten points, and four of the games by two points or less.

So who's next? What big upset could be lurking today?

Red Cup Rebellion Ole Miss vs. Cal NIT Open Thread

Black bears and golden bears. Can you feel the excitement?

The Haas Fieldhouse/Coliseum/Arena should be halfway to moderately full for this first round NIT match-up between Ole Miss (20-13) and Cal (17-14).

Tip-time is set for 8 p.m. CST on ESPN2, which means a 6 p.m. local time start for the game. In my experience, this is roughly 3 hours after most people in California get out of bed.

Red Cup Rebellion First Four ends tonight: USC/VCU and another 16 seed mismash

Surely the ratings for tonight's First Four will be better than last night.

Apparently, the UAB-Clemson game only had a 1.0 rating. The Beef O' Brady's Bowl had a 2.0 rating.

I watched both of those sporting events, and I fell asleep during both them.

Tonight will hopefully offer two close games, so check out the match-ups after the jump and discuss below.

Red Cup Rebellion Lipscomb Visits Oxford: Rebs Need Sweep for SEC Momentum

A recent three-game skid has some fans on the brink of hysteria as baseball season was supposed to be the beacon of light for Ole Miss athletics this academic year.

And with some good reason, the Rebels enter SEC play a mere four games from now and only have a little time to tinker with its line-up before one of the tougher schedules in college baseball.

So in our preview for this weekend, we looked at what batting order would start producing more runs by using the beloved OPS (on-base percentage + slugging).
