Scoop Jackson: Rose's pains could turn into gains

6

"I've been able to pick up players' tendencies, see what certain players like and what they don't like, see play calls that coaches call, see what works and what doesn't," Rose said. "As a point guard, I definitely need that. [Not playing,] I've been able to analyze the game instead of just playing and reacting to it." "It's a blessing in disguise," he said, finding a platinum-lining in his thus-far season from hell. "I think [this] is going to help me in the long run."

LeBron May Have Dislocated Finger

33

LeBron James injured the ring finger on his left hand during Miami's 105-90 loss at Indiana on Monday, according to league sources. The severity of the injury is not known at this point, but sources indicated the finger might be dislocated. The Heat did not practice Tuesday and had no comment on James' injury.

Broussard: Chicago has shown interest in Gasol, according to sources. One source says the Bulls like their team but have doubts about their ability to beat Miami without making one more move. Chicago would give the Lakers Carlos Boozer in a heartbeat, but that won't get it done for Gasol. The Lakers would likely want Luol Deng thrown into the trade, which would be a deal-breaker for the Bulls.

Hollinger: Bulls have legit title hopes (Insider)

10
Last season, Chicago rode Derrick Rose and a stifling defense to the league's best record before Miami's defense swallowed up Rose in the conference finals and exposed the Bulls' other limitations in a five-game series win. This season, the stifling defense is still there, if not in quite as extreme flavors -- the Bulls are merely second in defensive efficiency rather than first. But offensively? Suddenly, they're a juggernaut. Even with Rose missing nearly a third of the schedule, the Bulls are third in offensive efficiency, speaking well of how broad-based their attack has become. Six other Bulls besides Rose carry PERs above the league average, and as I noted in my piece on "BAD" rating, the Bulls haven't had a single minute played by a player with a PER below 12. In particular, a couple of trends stand out with Chicago. First is the substitution of offense for defense. Last season the Bulls relied heavily on two players -- Keith Bogans and Kurt Thomas -- who gave them very little offensively. This time around Thomas' minutes have largely gone to Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah, now that each is healthy, while Bogans' time has gone to Richard Hamilton, when he's been available, and Ronnie Brewer. Much more

"I under-managed the Bulls, I really did," said Jerry Reinsdorf, chairman of the team for the past 27 years. "That was one of the reasons for wanting Michael in here. I found myself letting the Bulls succeed on their own. We had a successful business, we're doing well financially and I sort of let it slide.

Word is that the Bulls' natural preference is playing out the season with one of the league's consensus top-three rosters and seeing how far they can go. But they could always make a trade play for Howard in conjunction with the draft, before free agency, if he's still in Orlando, since they have several quality players under contract to offer in exchange.

When asked after the game, and in light of Rose’s performance, about the difficulties of developing decision-making as a point guard (when to look for yourself, when to look for teammates), Wall said, "It’s not hard when you got guys like Kyle Korver that can make shots, and you can run off down screens and a guy like Carlos Boozer that can pick-and-pop, and Luol Deng and guys you can run plays for that make shots and create their own shots, it’s kind of easy."

34

One industry source insisted to ESPN.com this week that Rose's new shoe deal with adidas will easily crack nine figures and could legitimately approach the $250 million range -- as in $25 million annually over a 10-year span -- in what is known in the shoe game as a "lifetime" deal. How can the reigning MVP possibly command those kind of dollars as a shoe endorser? Here's how: Rose, as it was explained to me, is adidas' only counter to Kobe Bryant in China. I'm told Rose already outsells LeBron James there.

Paxson: Bulls monitoring Howard situation

130
[From the FanShots. Always news when the VP speaks. Haven't heard this whole audio yet but I don't like the early spin-job that's perhaps directly invoking this Woj piece. I'm hoping the Bulls can do more to make themselves an attractive destination, a goal I'm not sure how to measure but something besides actively un-recruiting, ya know? -ed.] "We don't want to talk about other teams' players but obviously there are situations out there that you know that you have to look at," Paxson said Wednesday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "The other part of it is you hope those types of players want to come here. Sometimes, at least what you hear from agents, it doesn't have anything to do with basketball. It has more to do with marketing and whatnot. Those are the things you don't have under control when an agent gets involved and doesn't even want to talk to you. All you do is keep trying, and we certainly will."
